You won't get 50 mpg with this truck. It is, after all, a truck. I got 14-15 mpg combined gas mile p/gallon with a fully loaded bed (1000 lbs.)!!! (a homemade camper lives on the bed). Otherwise, about 18-20 mpg. I bought this truck used about 4 years ago. It is 12-years-old now. I put in a new battery, and a set of great tires. I do the scheduled maintenance. That's it! It always starts, always runs. No issues. Reliable. Solid. Update: Camper, having served its function ("home" whilst moving and building a new house on raw land), has been removed. Gas mileage: 20-22 in zero traffic--mostly highway--miles. Climbs my very steep drive in 4WD like a goat. Black Bart, for so he is named, is 14-years-old now. Still Starts. Runs. A few cosmetic things that I might fix in future--inside and out--but nothing mechanical. Oh, I forgot to mention in my first review: I installed a "super cooler" on my radiator for the cross-country trip whilst carrying the camper, and see no reason to remove it! I doubt I will ever sell or trade this truck, as it suits my budget and transportation needs up here in the Appalachian Mountains 'to a T'!

I am about to hit 100k miles today (XE V6, 4WD, Crew Cab, 5 speed). Haven't had a problem yet and I've worked it hard. There aren't even any rattles in the interior. It'll tow an 18' boat, haul a yard of stone, plow snow, and commute to work. The ride, handling, and build quality are much better than my previous truck, a Toyota Tacoma. As far as mileage, I have seen 21mpg when driving with a light touch on the highway, but it's mostly 18-20mpg. It's certaintly no worse than any other compact pickup on the market. I did install a Magnaflow exhaust and K&N filtercharger, which helped with throttle response. Overall, I couldn't really ask for more from a truck.
Not til they pry my cold dead hands from the wheel

This is a 2004 which I bought used in 2013. So, I have had 6 years of excellent experience with this truck. I slapped some new (quality) tires on it, put a super cooler on the radiator and had a friend build a lightweight cab-over camper for it . . . and then took it cross country. Zero problems with this truck. The long wheel-base makes it a little less maneuverable than I might like, but the gas mileage fully loaded was about 13 mpg. Unloaded on the flat I get about 24 mpg. Mixed driving in the mountains about 20 mpg unloaded. Regular maintenance and oil changes and drives like a dream. Oh, and I love the 4x4 for my steep drive! Crew cab has a small back seat which I removed and built a flat plywood platform--which give storage underneath and a comfy perch for 2-3 75 lb. dogs.

I have had this truck for 23 months, in rain, snow, mud, dust, you name it, it goes there. It's a solid truck and Ihave had ZERO repairs and ZERO Recalls. It hauls well, carries, and also looks good in Super Black.
Great Truck!

I purchased this truck used in May 2008 to replace a 2000 Dodge Dakota. The truck drives well and can haul whatever I throw in the bed. The 4wd is flawless and works well when the snow flies. The truck has limited slip differentials, so I never get stuck. I have the long bed 4-door model, which is a bit difficult to park in tight situations, but the bigger bed is worth the trade off. The V-6 runs great and gets decent gas mileage for a truck this long. The automatic transmission is lazy on the downshifts, but runs fine. Wish it had a fifth gear for better fuel economy. I installed a Magnaflow exhaust on it, which helped freeway merging and mid- range power greatly.
