Best car I've ever had

I read once that driving a Honda Civic is like having a conversation with someone who knows exactly what you mean. I couldn't agree more. Motojournalists will tell you that the Toyota is a few 16th of an inch longer, the Mazda has a few more horsepower and the Nissan can run the quarter mile a fraction of a second quicker. What they don't understand is the work that goes into making the car do things it can't on paper. Like steer or accelerate as well as you need it to, when you really need it to, regardless of whether the numbers support it. Or pack the same amount of stuff in the trunk that used to fit into your SUV's, because you don't want to leave anything behind. Or cruise along in the snow, passing cars that have 4WD and twice the ground clearance, and are stuck, because you really need to get somewhere. So... In case you're wondering why it has no signal mirrors or those trendy LED dotted daytime running lights, it's because Honda's priority is to make this car your faithful, trusted companion, not a faux-fur and pleather fashion accessory where the compromises are evident throughout the driving experience. Motorcyclists and pickup truck drivers get really mad when a Honda Civic passes them, because it doesn't make sense (it doesn't even have a turbo), but, hey. Sometimes you need to have a little fun.

Had purchased a 2012 model with a 5 speed automatic, but after 3 yrs I just missed driving a stick so much. I sold the '12 to a family member and, because I loved the car otherwise, I found my '13 manual ex coupe and 4 yrs later, I am still very happy. Honda makes the best compact car manual trannys. The clutch and precision shifter are a joy, even in traffic! I wish people would all ditch their cvts and bring back the manuals! Improvements over my '12 are the two tone wheels, automatic climate control, back up camera, and nicer interior plastics. Gripes are the tiny toy car sized battery. Sit in your parked car listening to the radio for 90 minutes and the car won't start! Also, the R18 motor has no guts. I miss the SR20DE in my old Sentra which had the best of both worlds. Lastly, the bluetooth is buggy, sometimes failing to connect. I have to pull over and turn the car completely off, then on for it to pair. These are minor complaints as no car is perfect. I recommend this car, especially with a manual! **Update 8/19/20: Car is still performing well at 83,000 miles. I can't find the reason for the gradual drop in mpg to 31 over the past year. I've replaced spark plugs and cleaned the MAF sensor and throttle body. There are no codes being thrown. 31 mpg is still quite good, but it's just weird that this happened. Still very happy with the car. ***Update 8/19/21. Did a more thorough throttle body cleaning and the mpg improved to near-original level of 37mpg. Pennzoil 0w20 synthetic performs best of all oils I've tried in this car. ***Update 9/1/23*** Car still going strong at 109000 miles. Has some clear coat failure on roof and trunklid, but that's normal here in Hawaii. Very happy with my car, especially with how new car prices have skyrocketed lately. I wish I had the black interior instead of tan, but I had no choice at the time of purchase.

Another hit for Honda

I rack up a lot of mileage and I have kids to shuttle around so I need a car to be 100% reliable and inexpensive to run. I also think dealer service is a waste of money and the only service I perform on my cars is an oil change and tire rotation at whichever quick-lube joint I happen to be driving by when the maintenance minder goes on. I could drive a Toyota, but talk about bland. Civics are the perfect blend of sporty and economical, have great driving manners, good build quality and are more than powerful enough to appeal to most drivers. The 2013 is no exception, not to mention it's so classy and well equipped you really wonder how long people are going to waste money buying luxury cars.

Great Mileage, but feels cheap

Bought the manual because I did not like how bad shifting felt in automatic. Pros: mileage is insanely good - averaging about 37 combined with 75% highway and 25% around town (I drive pretty conservatively, highway is cruise control with econ button on). Safety - was rear ended, not injured, car held up fine. Fairly quiet and comfortable - good space for a smaller car. Cons: It was relatively cheap and it feels cheap. I had a VW golf before this and it felt like a tank in comparison (mileage sucked). The paint already has a chip after one month. And there is a sloshing sound that comes from the gas tank that is really noticeable if you have the radio off.
