The Chevrolet Trax is a comfortable and spacious SUV. It comes with a lot of features for the money too. All-wheel drive is unavailable, which might be a turnoff if you want it for wintertime driving. Otherwise, we think it's one of the best picks around for a small SUV.

It's Chevy's least expensive SUV
Still comes pretty well equipped with features
2024 kicks off the second generation for the Trax
Overview
If at first you don't succeed, try again. That seems to be the mantra for the Chevrolet Trax. Chevy discontinued the first-generation Trax after the 2022 model year. But now Chevrolet is giving this extra-small SUV another go with the redesigned 2024 Trax. The new Trax is still Chevy's least expensive model but it's roomier inside. There are also significant changes to the powertrain, interior and technology features. Overall, we think it's worth a look if you're shopping for a little SUV that's big on value.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2024 Chevrolet Trax LS 4dr SUV (1.2L 3cyl Turbo 6A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.50 per gallon for regular unleaded in Ohio.
There's plenty of space in both rows. Four typical adults can fit comfortably inside without front passengers having to scoot their seats up to accommodate those in the rear. And for its class, the Trax's cargo area is massive. At 25.6 cubic feet, it's both significantly larger than before and larger than most other cargo holds in the class. There's room in the rear for a weekend away with four and more than enough room for day-to-day trips to the grocery store. Chevy also outfits the Trax with a lot of the same advanced driver assistance features that you'll find on more expensive SUVs. Features such as standard automatic emergency braking and optional blind-spot warning can help drivers in situations where they are distracted or might make a mistake.
Competitors to consider
Make sure to also check out the Chevrolet Trailblazer while you're at a Chevy dealership. These two models have a lot of overlap on price, space, practicality and features. The most significant difference is that you can't get all-wheel drive on the Trax like you can on the Trailblazer. If you're looking for a compact SUV that offers a bit more driving engagement, the Mazda CX-30 is worth a look. The Nissan Kicks and Toyota Corolla Cross are two other budget-oriented models worth researching. Read our test team's Expert Rating below to learn more about how the Trax stacks up.

The Chevrolet Trax is a comfortable and spacious SUV. It comes with a lot of features for the money too. All-wheel drive is unavailable, which might be a turnoff if you want it for wintertime driving. Otherwise, we think it's one of the best picks around for a small SUV.
How does the Trax drive? The Trax comes with a three-cylinder engine, which might seem like a recipe for sloth-like acceleration. However, our test vehicle sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 9.1 seconds at our test track, which is on par with its rivals. Around town, the little engine provides plenty of torque, so keeping up with traffic is a breeze. The only time the engine feels a little wheezy is when passing on the highway. The automatic shifts smoothly and is responsive when you need a downshift.
Braking and handling are about what we expect from a compact crossover SUV. It's easy to park thanks to the light steering, and the brake pedal provides smooth stops and adequate emergency stopping power when you need it. The Trax isn't sporty but it feels stable around turns.
Comfort
7.5/10
How comfortable is the Trax? The seats in the Trax are somewhat flat and don't support you all that well when you're driving around turns. But the soft padding is good for comfort. We put a few hundred miles on the Trax in a relatively short amount of time and had no complaints after a long stint behind the wheel. Passengers in the rear should be comfortable. The ride quality is comfortable, and the Trax's suspension smooths out most bumps and imperfections in the road.
There's a moderate amount of wind and road noise on the highway, but it's never loud enough that you need to shout and it's really no louder than any rivals. The main issue holding the Trax back is its climate system. While it is powerful enough to keep you comfortable, the lack of dual-zone climate control and rear air vents is a drawback if you often have passengers aboard.

How’s the interior? The Trax's interior is one of the best you'll find in an extra-small SUV. We like the easy-to-use layout for the buttons on the dashboard and on the steering wheel. You'll never be hunting around for anything. The touchscreen's menus are also logically set up, though we noticed the touchscreen was occasionally slow to respond during our testing.
The driving position makes everything easy to see and reach. The seat height and wide-opening doors make getting in and out very easy. It helps that there's plenty of space in both rows, with more passenger area than nearly every other crossover in this class. The rear seat is roomy for all but the tallest adults, even for longer journeys. Visibility is very good too, thanks to upright windows, nicely sized mirrors and a crisp-looking backup camera.
Technology
8.5/10
How’s the tech? The Trax shares much of its in-car tech with the latest crop of vehicles from General Motors, though it's been pared down a bit for this little crossover. The most notable difference is the lack of a built-in navigation system or voice commands, though you can use your smartphone easily enough by using the standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. We had zero issues with either wired or wireless connection, something you can't say for every vehicle with wireless smartphone connectivity.
The Trax is available with a handful of advanced driver aids, including adaptive cruise control and blind-spot warning. We found the systems to be easy to activate and smooth in operation. The adaptive cruise kept up with traffic on the highway without leaving a huge gap from the vehicle ahead of you.
Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The Trax's cargo area measures out to 25.6 cubic feet, which is more than nearly every rival in this class. The cargo area itself is wide and deep, fitting a couple weeks' worth of groceries and supplies with ease. The angle of the rear window might make installing taller items a bit of trouble, but that's the case for most vehicles in this class. As it goes, it's hard to find more space behind the seats at this price.
Storage in the cabin is good, too, save for one big miss: the lack of rear cupholders. That seems like a big oversight when most rivals offer somewhere for a rear passenger to put a cup of coffee. The door pockets are big enough for a water or soda bottle, and the front cupholders are reasonably spacious and have a small slot between them to store a phone. Storage for other small items is good, too, thanks to a deep center console and bins on the front and back sides of the shifter. There are plenty of spots to store a phone, sunglasses and more.
The Trax is fairly small for an SUV, but there's plenty of space in the rear for a rear-facing car seat. Installing the seat should be mostly painless thanks to easily accessible anchors and wide-opening doors. The rear cargo cover might have to come off to hook onto the back seat, but that's true for rivals too.
Fuel Economy
7.0/10
How’s the fuel economy? The Chevrolet Trax has an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 30 mpg combined. That is about average for this class, but we saw a somewhat disappointing 28.7 mpg on our evaluation test route. Other rival small crossovers have done a little better in our real-world testing.
Value
8.0/10
Is the Trax a good value? The Chevy Trax is one of the most inexpensive vehicles in its class. It doesn't offer quite as many features (all-wheel drive, for example) but in general we think you're getting lots of value. There are some hard plastic interior panels, but most have a nice design or texture that keeps it from feeling cut-rate. Chevy did a fine job keeping the cost down without making cost-cutting immediately obvious.
The Trax includes a three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty. The powertrain is covered for five years or 60,000 miles. You also get five years of roadside assistance, and the first service visit is included with the price.
Wildcard
8.0/10
The Trax's styling is right in line with most of the rest of the class: sharp and striking without pushing things so far as to be divisive. Simply, it's a handsome little SUV both inside and out. Thanks to a nice ride height and some design tweaks like black trim on the fenders, we think it's one of the few extra-small SUVs that actually looks like an SUV rather than a slightly lifted hatchback. We do wish it were a bit more entertaining to drive, but we also don't think it's something to loathe either. Just simple, straightforward transportation.
Which Trax does Edmunds recommend?
Go with the midlevel LT for the best value. It's reasonably priced and comes with some desirable upgrades, such as a bigger center touchscreen and dual-zone automatic climate control.

2024 Chevrolet Trax 2RS 4dr SUV (1.2L 3cyl Turbo 6A)
The 2024 Trax "hits the sweet spot" packing in lots of important details which matter, and cutting costs on things that dont matter. If you are looking for an affordable, but good quality car, keep reading.
My priorities are 1)Safety 2) Value 3)Comfort 4) Looks
The Trax excels at all of these 4.
The infotainment system is by far the best in class. For example, the … backup camera is huge, has dynamic guidelines, and is crisp with great vision and resolution. The info system is also easy to setup and use.
I also LOVE the wireless Apple Carplay, and wireless charging. The Active noise cancellation seems to work well, as it is fairly quiet.
Dont let the sound of 3 cylinder 1.2 liter fool you. Its quick!
As far as fuel economy, I beat the EPA by quite a bit. I got 36mpg COMBINED city and hiway, but I am not using my car at the race track.
Within the past 5 years, I have owned 2 Hondas, (CRV and Civic), 3 Toyotas (Corolla, Camry, and Sienna) 1 Ford Fusion, and a Subaru Legacy, and the least expensive and best was the 2024 TRAX 2RS.
The Trax just does almost everything better, at lower cost, than the others I owned.
One of the best things: You can actually buy a new TRAX. Honda's, Toyotas, and Subaru's are selling "allocations" not cars, in many/most models. I dont want an "allocation", I want a car!
I love the Maverick, but dont try to buy one!
Now, the negatives:
No power Driver seat, (Power driver seat is only available in ACTIV model). and no power tailgate. Neither of these are important to me, Chevy did not compromise on safety, but I am more than willing to give up the power driver seat, power tailgate and AWD. Most people who think they need AWD do not. Sure, if you live in Alaska or high mountains where you drive in snow for 5 or 6 months of the year, you may need AWD, but for most of the rest of us, the AWD just uses more gas and is an excuse for car companies to raise the price.
Love this car!!!

2024 Chevrolet Trax LS 4dr SUV (1.2L 3cyl Turbo 6A)
The new 2024 chevy Trax is way ahead of game for the cross over SUV. It doesn’t feel small. Good amount of leg room in the back seat and good amount of trunk space. It looks sporty compared to other cross over SUVs.
Base model starts at 22k MSRP and has same engine as other models - LT & RS. Trax is going to be best seller for Chevy in the entry level cars.

Safety
Our experts’ favorite Trax safety features:
Automatic emergency braking
Detects if a collision is imminent and applies the brakes if you don't respond in time.
Rear cross-traffic warning
Warns you if a vehicle behind you is about to cross your path while you're in reverse.
Lane keeping assistance
Warns you if the vehicle begins to drift out of its lane and nudges the car back in line if you don't respond.
If at first you don't succeed, try again. That seems to be the mantra for the Chevrolet Trax. Chevy discontinued the first-generation Trax — its smallest and least expensive SUV — after the 2022 model year. Truth be told, we weren't broken up about it — time behind the wheel of the previous Trax didn't exactly inspire you to head back to the Chevy dealer when it was time for a replacement, especially when rivals had models that were less expensive, better to drive and offered significantly better tech and features. But notably, Chevrolet is giving it another go with the redesigned 2024 Trax.
The new Trax is significantly bigger than its predecessor in almost every dimension. Overall length is up by 11 inches, and within that a 6-inch-longer wheelbase (the measurement between the front and rear wheels) allows more rear legroom and cargo space. Overall height is the only measurement that's smaller, a likely result from a slightly lower ride height and the new Trax's more sloped roofline. There are also significant changes to the powertrain, interior and technology features.
What's under the Trax's hood?
To keep the Trax affordable, Chevrolet is offering only a single powertrain: a 1.2-liter turbocharged inline-three cylinder making 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. Those figures are less than the outgoing Trax and on the lower end for this class. The engine is mounted to a six-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels. All-wheel drive is not offered on the Trax.
How does the Trax drive?
Chevy's Corvette Z06 could make more power than the Trax even if it were only running on two of its eight cylinders, but the Trax's relatively light curb weight (listed at around 3,000 pounds) means it's peppy enough to not feel slow when moving away from a stoplight or merging onto the highway. With about 300 pounds less weight to move than before, the power deficit compared to the old Trax doesn't seem to matter. Even with four adults in the car, the Trax didn't struggle. The new three-cylinder is much more responsive than the previous four-cylinder, though rivals like the Mazda CX-30 offer more power and quicker acceleration, albeit at a higher price than the Trax. The six-speed automatic is fine, but we noticed some busyness on hilly roads when the transmission would frequently shift.
The Trax, even the sporty-looking RS model, isn't a performance vehicle by any stretch. The steering is quick enough to make parking a breeze (helped further by the Trax's relatively compact proportions), but it lacks any real feedback. If you're looking for a compact SUV that offers a bit more engagement, the Mazda CX-30 might be worth a look, though options can make it a significantly more expensive vehicle than the Trax.
How comfortable is the Trax?
Outside of wheel size, all Trax trim levels are mechanically identical, with visual tweaks and available features separating the trims. That means all Traxes ride about the same, which is overall pretty comfortable. Wheel sizes range from 17 inches on the base LS trim to 19 inches on the 2RS, but there's enough sidewall on the tire and compliance built into the suspension that the Trax absorbs most bumps and imperfections without too much issue. Road and wind noise is mild even at highway speeds.
There's plenty of space in both rows, with four adults fitting comfortably inside without front passengers having to scoot their seats up to accommodate those in the rear. There's lots of headroom, legroom and shoulder room, and decent-size rear windows help keep the back seat from feeling claustrophobic. Both seats offer soft padding, but the seat bottoms in both rows will likely seem a bit too short for passengers with long legs.
How's the Trax's interior?
Chevrolet (and General Motors as a whole) has often struggled when it comes to interiors, often hampering otherwise solid vehicles with cheap, ugly and frankly underwhelming cabins. That's been changing over the past few years, with recent Chevy models from the 2023 Colorado to the latest Corvette offering interiors that are significant steps up over their predecessors. The Trax continues that trend.
There are still hard plastics on the doors, dash and console, but the clean lines and interesting textures on those surfaces make a big difference. The buttons and knobs, too, feel far less cheap than before. Most things are well positioned and easy to reach, though the climate control is set a bit low in the dash. We still question GM's continued use of bright trim on some panels (it can be quite bright when reflecting midday sunlight), but most everything else is an improvement over the last Trax.
We had an opportunity to sample every trim, and even the base LS didn't disappoint. It was missing some of the colorful accents found in the Activ and RS trims, but the overall design and feel were the same. It's telling that Chevy was confident enough to let us behind the wheel of a base-spec car, as automakers generally want to put their best foot forward.
How's the Trax's tech?
The Trax is available with quite a bit of in-car tech, including standard automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance with lane departure warning, and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning are available as options. That's all good stuff on a car in this class, and most of it worked well in our initial testing.
The Trax is available with two infotainment systems, depending on the trim. The LS and 1RS get analog gauges and an 8-inch touchscreen display. The display uses an older software interface but it's still pretty responsive and easy to navigate. It includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, both with wireless connectivity.
Trims from the LT up get an 8-inch all-digital instrument cluster and a big 11-inch infotainment screen with a newer user interface. The new system is responsive and well laid out, but the instrument cluster could only show limited information at once. That information could only be changed from the infotainment screen, not the steering wheel like you'd expect. The system has Google-backed software, so navigation is as easy to use as it is on a smartphone.
How's the Trax's storage?
For its class, the Trax's cargo area is massive. At 25.6 cubic feet, it's both significantly larger than before and larger than most other cargo holds in the class. There's room in the rear for a weekend away with four and more than enough room for day-to-day trips to the grocery store. The load floor doesn't adjust, but there's space below it if you really need to tuck some things away. There's no power liftgate, but that's par for the course for this class. The load floor is fairly low too.
Storage up front includes door pockets large enough for a couple of bottles of water, a bin both in front of and behind the shifter and a decently sized center console. We found a couple of handy places to stash a phone, sunglasses or snacks.
How economical is the Trax?
Since the Trax is only available with a single powertrain, all trims get an EPA-estimated 30 mpg combined rating (28 city/32 highway). That's OK for the class, though rivals like the Nissan Kicks and Toyota Corolla Cross offer slightly better EPA figures.
What are the Trax's trim levels?
The 2024 Trax is available in five trim levels: LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS and Activ. Edmunds says
The redesigned Chevrolet Trax took all the right lessons from Chevy's other recent compact success, the Trailblazer. With a spacious and handsome interior, lots of available features and decent on-road comfort, the 2024 Trax has upped its game and shows that GM's recent successes are no flukes.
