Exactly What I Expected

I want to start this review by saying I absolutely love my Cobalt. Starting with the good, the car is quick for a 4 cylinder, rides smooth, has a great stock stereo system, easy and cheap to maintain, comfortable, and very reliable. It has never left me stranded. With all of that being said, I absolutely hate how cheaply everything was built. Everything that shouldn't move moves. The dome light lens rattles, the window cranks rattle with the radio on, the dash pieces move, and worst of all is the steering column. Everyone I've talked to has the same issue. It rattles between 55 and 75 mph and over bumps at low speeds; you replace the steering column, and it'll wear out again.

After a lifetime of fast sports cars, I just totaled one, ouch!Decided I'd get a bare bones econobox for cheap insurance, to tide me over til the new Camaro debuts. After looking at all the others I picked the Cobalt. I love this car! Fun to drive, decent power and mileage, plus it looks great in Victory Red. Love the tail lights! Lowered it with Eibach SportLines, bigger rims/BFG T/A KDW's, spoiler, full tint, sheepskins. I'm gonna keep her as my daily driver after I get the Camaro. Highly recommended. Big bang for the buck ! Chevy, You won me back!

Looks great. Handles very well around corners. Good size engine, and a nice radio upgrade from the '06 to the '07 model. Only suggestion is to have better quality speakers. Other than that, a great car for a good price.

Fun little car, but...

I've greatly enjoyed my 2007 cobalt. The manual transmission is surprisingly good, with a linear clutch and a stick with tight, short throws. It isn't quick, but it's got enough power to have a little fun and feel confident overtaking. Very economical if you drive with a light foot. Huge trunk it's size. For the price, there isn't much out there that looks as good as the cobalt coupe. However, I still have some gripes with the cobalt. The road and wind noise is deafening, the seats are uncomfortable, and it has poor high speed stability and braking. As is to be expected with GM cars, the interior materials are very cheap and build quality is poor. The base trim is laughably equipped for a 2007, not even coming with power locks, windows, mirrors, or cruise control. Rear leg and head room is hilariously bad, anyone larger than a child will be cramped sitting back there. I've been plagued by issues relating to the front end suspension. The front shocks are shot, as are the ball joints I replaced 6 months ago. I've gone through 3 sets of front tires as the front end keeps coming out of alignment despite multiple visits to the shop to remedy the problem. Looking at other reviews, I'm not the only one who's had trouble with the front end. If you plan on buying a cobalt I highly recommend having a mechanic inspect the suspension first. Other than those issues, my cobalt has proven to be very reliable. I've never had an issue with it failing to start or dying on me. The 2.2 i4 seems to be pretty tough, I've put 30,000 miles on it with one cylinder running at half the PSI it should be without any additional adverse effects. This car should have died long ago, but it just keeps on going. Repair and maintenance costs are very low if something does go wrong. The cobalt is a great package for the price. It looks good, the manual is fun to drive, and it's easy on the wallet. If you are planning on buying, make sure the front end is solid and avoid the base model as it is so poorly equipped.

I bought this car new in January 2007. I liked it a lot, especially when gas was $5 a gallon in 2008 and within a week all the dealer lots were full of huge SUV's and no compacts were to be seen. Now it has 63000 miles on it and it's needed some work, especially the front-end (most of which is discussed in the "improvements" section). It was a very sensible car, and still is...but if you're not a DIY'ing shade-tree mechanic you'll be very disappointed with the early repair costs.
