GMC Safari/Chevy Astro Electrical Problems

  • Re: Brake and ABS lights. [egillett]

Thanks for your concern.... For your records, there's a known problem with the ABS system on the Astro/Safari vans. There's an official TSB but NO recall. Still amazes me why no formal recall. For details.... Bottom line is... Defector sensor (which needs to be replaced) or the existing sensor is too "rusted up" to work properly... ----------------- .... Basically, dirty sensor mounting surfaces cause the signal to drop out at low ... Read More

GMC Safari/Chevy Astro Transmission Problem

. The "factory" transmisisons in the Astro/Safaris vans are known to blow and need a rebuild. If wondering, the tranny in my previous 2003 AWD Safari with only 74,000 miles blow. Blew while driving normally and pulling away from a stop light. It needed a complete rebuild (using factory torque convertor). After rebuild, my van's tranny was better then factory. It shifted properly, it felt firm shifting across its different grears ... Read More

. For "good" selling price comparison for your specific area, do shop around. Try your other local auto dealers and if needed, try online sites (like auto trader sites) and do lots of web searches. Unfortunately, each specific region has their own selling range. 190,000 miles sounds like lots of miles on a van. Especially a previous business van - that might have been driven hard - to meet business "within ... Read More

I was wondering if anyone can help me withthis question. i'm looking for a small van for my business.I am interested in the Chevy Astro in particular. I found one that unfortunatley has 190,000 miles. I would be purchasing from a private original owner who used this to deliver light medical supplies for his busniess. He replaced the engine last year. The car cosmetically looks great, both inside and out.The car was ... Read More

Thanks for responding, jyoung15 and familyof5. This info would not be as alarming to me if we were talking about a vehicle that had 150+K miles. However, I only have 61K miles on this van, taking care to do scheduled maintenance as suggested. I'm a repeat Chevy buyer and have been happy with each one; 96 Astro - lived to see 182K miles and a small repair history, 96 Silverado - ... Read More

gm has had lots of tranny problems ever since the switched to the 4l60e. i have about 50 safari & astro vans, and trust me, they have a lot of other problems. i've had trannys replaced with only 6000km on them. brace your self,,,it's about a 2000$ rebuild. when whining starts, start whining to your dealer about a torque-inverter. 700r4 rules,,,,bring it back G M.

Hi All, I am looking at purchasing a Chevy Astro in the near future to serve as my "dog show" vehicle :-) I am looking for advice as to if there are any years I should avoid (looking in the 1998-2003 range) and what is the average lifetime mileage on an Astro before you start seeing major issues. I know that this is dependant on care of the car but I ... Read More

I bought a new Astro in 1995. I was so pleased over the years that I bought another one 2 weeks ago. Chevy redesigned the sliding door lock on the 2003 Astro vans. IT FEELS LIKE IT LOCKS IN THE OPEN POSITION, BUT IT WILL CLOSE WITH ONLY FINGER PUSHING PRESSURE APPLIED AT THE REAR OF THE DOOR. WHOEVER OWNS ONE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!! HAVE SOMEONE HOLD THE DOOR OPEN WHILE ENTERING ... Read More

  • Astro / Safari redesign

Written by: taxmanjeff on Aug 20, 1999 4:48:22 AM

Late last or early this year POPULAR SCIENCE magazine ran a 5 year automotive preview. It indicated that a redesign for the Astro / Safari is due for the 2002 or 2003 model year. Since the vans are based largely on the mechanicals of the Chevy S-10 pickup, it seems likely that you'll see a new S-10 before a new Astro / Safari.
