A really good little crossover, pretty good luxury features for the price, very minimal and quite reliable so far. The infotainment is a bit annoying because it doesn't make android auto full-screen and the seats could be a bit more premium. It's definitely nicer to live and drive than the CX-5 or CX-30, especially when it comes to comfort and features. Also the paint and corrosion protection is top notch, which is primarily the reason I bought it over the Mazdas. My old Mazda 3 undercarriage was nearly completely rusted after a couple of years due to the weather. I heard there were some electronic gremlins, but so far had no issues and stop-start works pretty much like my old mazda (though I disable it most of the time because it does degrade the starter and doesn't help economy that much) CTA and BLIS are awesome, and the driving feel is definitely really good though a bit light steering. Also it saved me from some collisions, so top marks so far Currently 15k miles on the odometer. Great car, maybe a bit expensive but it's definitely worth it for the style, safety and comfort

My Sporty XC40

Loving my 2021 T5 R Design XC40. I owned the XC60 for 12 years, and loved it, and fell in love with this new little gem. Please note that the cargo area is a bit smaller than the XC60, but my husband can still fit his golf clubs and 2 large pieces of luggage in the car with ease so according to him all is right with the world. I have read complaints about the interactive system in the car, so I immediately read the short portion of how to use it and the general commands to ease the learning curve and I have loved it. I also read that others felt like it's not as luxurious as it could be, but I chose the R Design because I wanted a sportier look both in and out. I did look at the XC40 Momentum and Inscription and found them to be up to the standard of Volvo luxury if that is what you are looking for but want a smaller SUV. So far I have been completely happy with my new toy, and hope it gives me another 12 years of joy like my XC60 did. I am confident it will.

Too many problems for this level vehicle

PROBLEMS I HAVE/HAD IN 18 MONTHS: I had a rumbling kind of noise from the sunroof during rain. Service at my local dealership said they never heard of such a noise. I looked it up online, and there are numerous people complaining about this same noise. Service said because there is no history of the problem, there was not anything they could do about it. I told them I had read online about a fix. The service manager basically shamed me about believing what I read online. I persisted so they finally got it in to check it out. They ended up doing EXACTLY what I had read online to fix it. No noise since. The car has a pull to the right for no reason. I have not hit or ran over anything to cause it, and tire pressure is good in all 4. The dealership can not get me in for almost a month to even diagnose. I had a vibration while braking. I had to wait 3 weeks for an appointment. When I finally got it in, they told me the rotors were warped, but they did not have them in stock. They said they would call me. 3 weeks later, no call. I called the parts department anonymously and asked if they had the rotors in stock. Of course they did. I called service back and they said, “We were just going to call you”. Ummm, ok. I have a driving light out in the front. AGAIN, they can’t get me in for a month, and they said they could not tell me whether or not it is covered under warranty until they have it in. I paid $3k for 100k bumper to bumper warranty. This is BS! The tailgate is supposed to open when I swipe my foot under it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Service told me that’s just how the Volvos are. There’s nothing they can do to make it more consistent. For $50k I didn’t expect these little problems, and I certainly expected Volvo service to care more about the problems I am having!!! DISLIKES I DID NOT EXPECT FROM A $50 K LUXORY VEHICLE: Having the temperature/AC/heat settings available ONLY through the touchscreen is super inconvenient, if not a safety hazard. The slowest setting of the Heat/AC fan makes noise. Seriously, even on the lowest setting it is loud. The push button controls available for window defrost on/off are set to max and work fast, but once activated I can't make minor adjustments to their levels unless I use the touchscreen. These adjustments take too much attention from my driving. When using the raise/lower speed buttons on the steering wheel to change cruise control speed, it changes in increments of 5 mph, not 1. So if I am set at 60 and want to raise to 63, I have to turn it off, get my speed to 63, then turn it back on. The wiper washer system is horrible. The washer fluid goes onto the blade itself instead of spraying on the window. It never spreads evenly.

Love the look and feel of this little SUV but after driving it 4 months it's collision avoidance system keeps going off FOR NO REASON. I have turned off all of what I call the "nanny" safety features off the minute I bought it so how is this feature even going off at all. I can be out on a country road, no lines even on the road and it hits the brakes and yanks me left into oncoming traffic, it has happened on the freeway going 65 miles an hours and also during city driving, I have had it to service several times and they are clueless. Someone in Sweden was supposed to have gotten back with us within 30 days, it's been 45 days now and I guess no one cares. Also at 5 months old it had an airbag replaced already and now the side panel falls down constantly so it needd to go back to have that fixed.

Defects from day one and budget level of service

Bought a new 2021 xc40 recently. The car has had numerous dangerous malfunctions including auto start/stop not resuming the engine after a brief stop at a traffic light, and the city safe auto braking going off randomly nearly killing me when traveling at 50mph. Bringing it in for service is a struggle since many Volvo dealers don’t have loaner fleets unlike virtually all other luxury brands. To make matters worse, owner support hotline/Volvo on call doesn’t know ANYTHING about the tech systems in your car. They don’t even know what the system is when you tell them by name using their own lingo. Highly disappointed and heartbroken since I had so much respect for Volvo brand before owning. Now I would advise others to stay away and consider other luxury brands. Volvo is masquerading as a luxury brand but their service has not caught up, at the dealer nor corporate level.
