What a great car! I chose this car over the Subaru Legacy as I wanted an AWD vehicle. This car has plenty of power and feels very sporty. I love the exterior styling and the Volvo emphasis on safety. You will not be disappointed with this car at all. I chose the Leather, convenience package, Climate Package, Bi-Xenon headlights and 17" wheels. The seats are very comfortable even after having spent 3 hours in the car today. The only negative is the rear visibility. It is a bit smaller than what I am used to. With Volvo offering $1,850 cash back on the T5 model, it was an easy choice.

Outstanding. The real benefit that isn't advertised with the Volvo Safety is with the new DTSC system, you don't HAVE accidents. I drove this car on a Test Track in Germany for 8 hours under all conditions and couldn't spin it out in any circumstance. It is incredible. This is my first AWD vehicle and it's handling in snow and ice is better than on dry pavement with my old rear wheel drive cars.

After eight months I still look forward to getting in the car. Not as much power as the T5 but more than enough for normal driving. Handling is superb. After driving Hondas, I appreciate the low end torque and the smooth shifting. Controls are logically designed. The interior is spartan but comfortable and without gimmicks. Fit and finish is excellent. I enjoy getting compliments on the car as there still are not that many around. I think it is one of the best looking current models.

Just Buy It

When I 1st saw the S40 in the LA auto show Jan 2003 I knew I was going to buy one. Picked it over my other want cars. RX8 too gas guzzler, BMW 3 series too common now, Audi A4 less power for more money, and Mini Coop selling more than invoice. If the S Coop was around 18K I would buy that instead. The T5 6 spd manual is perfect. It's got power when you need it yet it can get 33 MPG going up the mountains through the grape vine at 70 mph no traffic drive in cold morning air. High torque at low rpms making it easy to beat the young car aftermarket ad on enthusiasts. Quiet drive as if you're not even trying to speed up. Handling is great but car feels stiff or choppy at freeways.

I like this car. I like the interior, the exterior, the fit and finish, etc. etc. etc. If I had it to do all over again, I would still look very closely at this car. The fuel economy is bad though. No way around it, my car gets lousy gas milage. Advertised mileage is 22 City and 31 Hwy. I get 21 and some change on the highway. I really don't drive in the city enough to make any claim to what I would get there, but 21 on the highway? Nope....not acceptable mileage.
