Used 2004 Volkswagen Touareg Consumer Reviews
Good Looking Manufacturer Buyback
Factory Buyback. Our 2004 Touareg was great looking, great off-road (low-range rocks!) but was a miserable experience until the day VW (was forced) to buy it back: The V6 engine is weak and sucks down fuel. My new BMW X5 4.4i gets much better gas mileage. The Touareg had tire pressure monitoring failures from the day we bought it. We had trim and rattle problems, squealing rotors, remote lock/unlock issues, A/C windshield fogging problems, and a wiper blade that flew off in a rainstorm. 23 shops days in under 10,000 miles. After three repeat repair attempts and filing Lemon law, VW tried lawyering out of it until losing the arbitration. PS - I love my new BMW X5...Are you listening, Zieter?
Don't let you mechanic rob you!
I'd recommend the Touareg with the caveat that you probably should expect some expensive maintenance issues from time to time or be able to do your own wrenching like I do. I bought mine for $1300 from an auction expecting the transmission to be shot since I knew it ran and drove. Turns out it had the driveshaft issue that others have complained about. This requires a $400 aftermarket part and one hour of work for a permanent fix. Easy. The transmission shifted rough particularly on the downshift from 5th to 4th and the outsourced Aisin-warner transmission has well known valve body issues. I pulled the valve body and had it rebuilt and I reinstalled it and it shifts smooth as butter now. I had the common passenger airbag off issue which is an easy fix by hardwiring the problem point. I replaced the high pressure power steering line but any car with 130k plus could have a line go. I still need to track down the issue with the tire pressure sensors but they don't affect vehicle performance. My wife's subaru has the same issue. So does my friend's Toyota. All the other issues I've had to address have been due to poor maintenance or work by previous owners or wear items and you can't pin that on vw. They had the wrong ac compressor in there! Who does that? Other than that there are a couple wear items I still need to address like the rear hatch struts and lcd screen. The interior plastics quality leaves a little to be desired. But the truck runs great now and I love driving it. I'll be a little over 3k in on a vehicle with very good acceleration and solid handling. It has power to spare. The interior is pretty nice for the age. The towing capacity is very good and the vehicle still looks really sharp going down the road. If you know how to turn a wrench a used Touareg can be a great buy.

Great fun but suspect electronics
We love how this car handles and performs. The engine is responsive and the ride is quiet. The nav system is easy to use. Fabulous in the snow. Down sides: The flat tire sensor has been replaced twice because of persistent failures. The battery cable was replaced. Note that this car has a battery that can't be jump started or used to jump others. A stepper motor for the power steering was replaced because it was causing seize ups on tight turns. Overall I'd say this will be a great short term car, but the reliability for this first year model is low and I'm glad we're leasing it just for the length of the warranty.
frustrating to own
Had this car for 18 months. Bought it with 36,000 miles on it in Oct '07. The tire pressure warning system has been "fixed" 6 times and is again giving the flat tire alarm which blocks all other dash display features. The rear stabilizer bar broke. The brakes had to be replaced two months after I bought the car. I got the pad wear warning alarm a week after the new brakes were installed. New tires and alignment last July. The fronts are worn down to nothing on the inside after 10,000 miles. The dealer has been great and fixed almost everything for free. They also sell Fords. I'm going to trade for an Escape. I've had enough.
An other week without my Touareg
I would not take this vehicle further than 10 miles from home because of reliability problems. Number of ignition coils, air bag, tire pressure, faulty gas cap, door locking problems, just to name a few. Last VW I will ever own!!
