2023 Tiguan SEL R line issue

Alaskan Tigger , 08/28/2023
2023 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

This is our second Tiguan, we just traded in our 2020 SEL 4 Motion for the 2023 SEL R line 4motion. We live in Alaska and are 325 miles from the dealership in Anchorage. Not even 1000 miles on the car and a massive oil leak on the front right, inboard cv axel seal failure. The seal of the transaxle output shaft to cv axel failed. Now all sorts of oil under the car, exhaust, cross members. Probably just an issue with the seal, or cv axle installation at the factory. Just look to see if your 2023 Tiguan is leaking. We park in a garage, so it was easy to spot on the clean concrete floor. Everything else is great with the car.

Great, Sometimes Unfairly-maligned? Compact SUV

S&L'83, 05/02/2024
2024 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

I’m 64 years old. My wife and I have bought or leased a lot of vehicles over the years - Acura’s, Toyota’s, Honda’s, VW’s, Audi’s, Ford’s and GM. My last few cars were Audi sedans (45TFSI, 261 HP, 273 lb.-ft. torque, 3,700 lb. curb weight). I really enjoyed the Audi’s as they were efficient and fun to drive on our twisting, hilly rural roads, but we wanted to get a non-luxury compact SUV this time. Of all the options, I liked the styling of the Tiguan best, but was concerned about acceleration based on some of the reviews and videos I had seen, the engine specs: 184 HP, 221 lb.-ft. torque, and the 4,000 lb. weight relative to what I was used to. I test-drove one though and was really OK with the performance so wondered if I was missing something or getting senile, so decided to test further. We like Honda’s - my wife drives a Ridgeline, so I test-drove the CR-V Hybrid Sport Touring. It was solid, but I wasn’t crazy about how it drove with the CVT even with the addition of the electric motors. I drove the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited and liked it better than the CR-V, but it didn’t seem to me to drive as good as the VW and it cost more (as did the CR-V) which I know is probably moot once the fuel savings are factored in. I crossed the Mazda CX-50 Turbo off the list based on concerns about seat and ride comfort, cabin noise and cost. Volkswagen reliability is a concern for some, but we’ve had a Passat, a couple of CC’s and Jetta’s and the quality has been very good, as has Audi’s; plus we’re leasing. Anyway, we decided to go with the Tiguan. It’s only been a month, but we are very happy with the decision. As for performance, we’ve driven it on interstate highways, two-lane highways, back roads, and in small towns, and have been thoroughly enjoying it. As other reviewers have noted, the secret is keeping your foot out of it - there is more than enough torque with a light, linear touch on the gas pedal. When I’ve needed to “punch it” (passing on hills for example), I simply pull the shifter down from Drive to Sport and have had the power I’ve needed. It is annoying though that VW offers European customers better power-plants than they do in the US. The steering and braking are good enough. The handling is composed and actually fun. Car and Driver describes the performance as “athletic if not breath-taking”, which I think is accurate. We like the appearance inside and out. It is roomy, the seats are comfortable (and supportive in hard turns), and the panoramic sunroof is a great feature. It is easier to get in and out of than the A4 which is a big help when chauffeuring our elderly mothers or grandchildren around. The reclining back seats are a plus. I’ve seen some complaints about the steering wheel, HVAC, and infotainment controls, and again fail to see the problem. They all work well and in some cases better than others I’ve used - swiping the volume on the steering wheel for example. I do miss paddle shifters (primarily to downshift) but am getting used to just using the shift lever instead. The engine sound is not all that refined - somewhat reminiscent of an old Beetle. The cabin is quiet though and does a great job of isolating road and wind noise; and the Fender audio system is very good - at least compared to what we are used to. The gas mileage has been better than advertised with regular to aggressive driving. The other day I drove 64 miles in ‘normal” mode on secondary roads and the trip computer showed 32 MPG. The ride quality is good. The headlights are the best I’ve ever experienced. The key fob isn’t great, but functional. The VW phone app is handy, as is the hands-free trunk lid feature. All-in-all, I recommend the Tiguan SEL R-Line, especially if you enjoy driving.

2022 Tiguan with 64k Miles - still great

NewEngland to Canada, 07/10/2023
2023 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
20 of 20 people found this review helpful

Bought this as a commuter car - 2022 SEL R-Line. First year was a 350 mile commute each way each week. 2nd year is a 550 mile commute each way, each week. 64k miles on the car since Jan. 2022. Car has been a great commuter. Small warranty issues: 1) Memory seat module needing replacement 3 times 2) Infotainment unit being replaced one 3) Rear seat track needing replacement - all under warranty. Other negatives are: 1) Steering wheel does not go low enough 2) Very delayed throttle response from stop. Beyond turbo lag - its scary at times the amount of delay. 3) Inability to control some functions/settings while in motion 4) Speaker phone could be louder But overall, an outstanding value. Great gas mileage, very comfortable at highway speeds for long distances, excellent in snow (blizzak tires installed), plenty of hauling space. Upscale interior for its price point / class. Essentially, a less expensive audi. I'm 6'0", 180 pound male. Seat goes back plenty far enough with room behind it for 2nd row passengers. Highly recommend this as a commuter.

Solid fundamentals but very glitchy electronics

I bought my 2023 Tiguan R in November of 2022. I have over 8000km on it. Engine and transmission have no problems. The Tiguan is used to provide transportation for my disabled wife who cannot manage getting in and out of a regular size car anymore. The road keeping navigation assist technology can be very glitchy with false alarms as can the audio be glitchy. The worst glitch was while driving on the highway, the road keeping system thought my hands were not on the wheel (when they were) and it slammed the brakes on at 60MPH for a brief moment with the cruise control on and me being near no other traffic at all. It looks like VW hasn’t ironed out all of the bugs from the electronics. Heated seats and heated steering wheel are great! Ride comfort is good but we shouldn’t have ordered the 20 inch rims. Ride comfort improves significantly with smaller rims.

A lot of complains about jerky drivetrain. First thing - disable start stop at the beginning of your drive(I only enable it on long traffic lights). Start stop is very intrusive and may turn engine off right before you go, which leads to a very long delay. Second - first 1-2 minutes after cold start the engine is warming up and feels much slower. This is not an issue if you drive thru town before you reach highway, but if you live right next to it, then consider other cars. Third - this car doesn't like when you floor the gas - there will be delay and then the turbo will come in and it feels jerky. Instead if you need power, press gas more linear. I also shift from D to S when I'm on a highway and when I need to sprint I press gas incrementally. The result is very pleasant and fast driving and even better fuel consumption than I had in D mode, because in D I had to floor it when overtaking and turbo drinks fuel like crazy.

2023, S FWD base model: Ok, 450 mi thus far. Gave 4 stars just cuz not had it long enough. Smooth acceleration-from stopped? Not really. As others said, somewhat quirky, turbo kicks in when stomp on gas. That said, I drive 'conservatively', smooth accel, but am not a hyper miler either. I just got avg 40.2 mpg on a h/w trip, all around avg is 36.4 right now. The 8 spd Japan trans seems to work well, don't really feel it shift. If you drive your 'normal' way [me, conservative] you may like it. It's a turbo [lag] NOT a supercharger [no lag] so realize that! Cargo storage: Not bad - it IS a lower hatch opening and floor to ceiling height than a RAV4 that I traded -wanted to fit trash barrels so you need a barrel that's MAX 28", in the hatch middle, with the 3rd row seats down, so as to fit under the 'opening', once in, the height gets a bit taller. [bought 27" barrels - rubbermaid. Think are 26 gal. Overall: I knew going in it IS the BASE Model after all so wasn't expecting the world. Looks great - very surprised it came w/nice Alloy Wheels! Would recomm it right now. Will update soon. UPDATE: The turbo seems most useful when you're at 30mph and above -give a little extra gas and kicks in - much smoother than standing start due to the first 3 gears are quite low so you get gear change AND turbo kick in. And again avg'ed 36.3 mpg this time. Also, odd one but know when you bring your wipers up to clean the rubber blades or for ice/snow? Don't, try to, you'll scratch the hood edge! You CAN'T lift them unless the wipers are in "Service Mode", a 'vertical' setting using the wiper 'stalk' [talked of in manual, have not tried yet]. More later.

I found this car better among Rav4, CRV, and CX5 in terms of acceleration, sleekness, power and beauty. The gas consumption is slightly more than any of the competitors.

My first Volkswagen Tiguan

I've only ever driven Toyotas and Hondas, with a few Peugeots, Nissans, and Fords thrown in. I played it safe with my car choices. But I love driving, and I've never really enjoyed any of those cars. I bought a Tiguan 24 S model, and I love it! It's such a great value for the money. I was hesitant to buy a VW because of the reviews, but I wish I had done it sooner. I've put a little over 6,000 miles on it, and I haven't had any problems at all. The only thing is that the turbo lags a bit. Update. Since then Dealership had recalls on Start Stop software update and that's it. The vehicle runs well and no issue at all. Am enjoying it.

We have owned our 2023 Tiguan for about three weeks. We continually marvel at the driving experience: Smooth acceleration, good power and braking, and quiet, with great handling. Inside it's comfortable and spacious. The styling is appealing, both inside and out.

I loved my Tiguan but there is a dangerous lag in acceleration. Several times I have pressed the gas and the car just stops and gets stuck, thankfully I wasn't at an intersection.

I finally broke out of my comfort zone and after owning many different cars over the years, purchased my new 2024 VW Tiguan SE. It’s my first VW and not sure what I’ve been thinking all these years. After dealing with a number of annoying issues with brand new Hondas, and even most recently Toyota, I decided to open my eyes and explore other options. From the first test drive I was sold!!! If you’ve been on the fence because of things you may have heard in the past about the Volkswagen brand, get off the fence and go drive some of their cars. You’re going to be very happy you read my review!!

Atrocious oil consumption after 20,000 miles

Liz, 11/14/2024
2023 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
6 of 6 people found this review helpful

The car is beautiful. The interior is also gorgeous with all the bells and whistles. However, from day one the infotainment system has been buggy, the acceleration is severely lacking, and my biggest issue is one that showed up after 20,000 miles. We got an oil change at 20k, 10,000 synthetic oil, pretty standard. At 25k we received a notification of low oil. Put almost a quart in because the oil wasn’t even on the dipstick anymore. Good to go. 28,000 miles, another low indicator of oil and added another quart. Take it to vw and are told that it is normal for their cars to burn 1 quart every 1200 miles. Which is outrageous and not disclosed before purchase. The dealerships are not helpful and we had to threaten them to get them to do an emissions test which, you guessed it, fell within their 1200 mile deal. I have never heard of an untuned car on synthetic oil burn, or a car that isn’t from the 70s, burn oil like that. AND it didn’t happen until after 20k. This is a known issue with the car. Do not buy unless you like extra maintenance and worry. It will only get worse as the engine gets older. Cannot wait for that class action suit. Also known issues with center console on roof falling off and sunroof exploding. Resale value is abysmal and it’s expensive to begin with so I’m still 10k upside down after almost 2 years. Only gave it two stars because it is pretty and spacious. Exactly what I was looking for in a family car.

So happy with my Tiguan!

I had been looking for a small SUV and did MONTHS of research. I narrowed it down to VW based on design, tech and safety features for the price. First looked at the Taos, but couldn't get past the blue accent panels in and around the dash, etc. Decided on the Tiguan and have had it for just about 4 months. Could not be happier! The infotainment system is built into the dashboard which is key for me. I cannot understand why auto companies incorporate it "on top" of the dashboard - seems very distracting and would obstruct your view while driving. The front interior of the vehicle is very roomy and the second row is a normal size for a small SUV. I will say the 3rd row seats are probably useless unless you have very small children, but the seats easily fold down and provide ample hatch/trunk space. So many safety features give me peace of mind, and the wireless connectivity and charging is great. The simple and classic lines of this vehicle make me happy. My husband and I took it on vacation this past week via the interstate. It is comfortable, extremely responsive and the turbo is fast. The adaptive cruise control even worked in stop and go traffic. The finesse of acceleration day to day takes a bit to get used to, but once you do, it moves and is fun to drive! The driver's seat is adjustable any way you could imagine and the passenger seat is perfectly comfortable. My only concern is that we have a panoramic sun/moon roof and we live in FL. There is only a fabric cover separating the glass from the interior of the vehicle, so we may look into a darker tint on the roof glass. And I must say, even though we live in FL, the heated seats combined with the "smart" remote start are wonderful for cold mornings in the winter.

2023 SEL R line after 6 months and two trips back to the dealership still has tech issues. The infotainment system shuts down, radio doesn't work periodically, and drops calls regularly. Do not like the autostop feature.

Mechanical Deficiencies

Jim, 03/17/2024
updated 11/19/2024

I bought a 2023 Tiguan in September 2023. Having owned over 170 vehicles over the years, I am extremely disappointed in the drivetrain and ergonomics of the Tiguan. The drivetrain “oscillates” in a deceleration mode, (similar to worn out bearings in a u-joint), the acceleration does not have any consistency in a positive normal acceleration (even if the start-stop function is OFF) What is really disappointing is that with the first 8K maintenance done this week, the Service Mgr at the Dealer stated “we are aware of the deficiencies you have noted and there is nothing we can do about it. It’s a flaw noted by VW.” I have to put the car in neutral every time I’m decelerating to a stop. In start and stop traffic, the acceleration has a “blank spot” where nothing happens when depressing the pedal. Unacceptable… The other item, not a big issue, is that the rear cup holder for the front passengers is not easily accessible. Need to be moved forward. Overall opinion with the vehicle I am really dissatisfied with the vehicle, price point and that there are known deficiencies by VW, but no intent to resolve the issues. Easily falls into a “ lemon law” issue. UPDATE: The numerous complaints by consumers are in line with what I’ve experienced in my 2023 Tiguan: lack of acceleration, engine develops excessive rpm without the transmission matching torque, normal deceleration causes an oscillation bouncing on the drive train, harsh down shifting under normal deceleration. Normal specification for idle rpm is 850 rpm yet issue stated from the Service Manager at my dealership is that VW is fully aware of the issues with the entire fleet of Tiguans yet will do nothing about the problems noted throughout the fleet. All I can say is buyer beware. Overpriced, underpowered and poor engineering.

You want value for money? I know I do so I chose the VW Tiguan SEL R Line. Where can you get Audi quality electronics, interior and design features at an affordable price, look no farther than the Tiguan. Reasonable power, fuel efficient quiet and smooth running engine. Smooth shifting with manual shifting capabilities. Interior is roomy, especially the back seat. Luxury materials used in the interior are high end quality. A pleasure to drive and own that’s the Tiguan.

This vehicle hugs the road with its luxurious interior and features. I love my new 2024 Tiguan , it’s a quality car with no fancy price tag that’s seems overly priced. I have a love for German cars, they seem to last for years and years with little to few problems just as long as you are on top of routine maintenances. I am excited that I’ve made the right choice.

The 2024 SEL R Line is a beautifuls car, but at less than 600 miles we are already having issues with electronics. The SOS warning, the driver assist warning and the infotainment have all already happened. We have taken pictures and videos of it all happening, but the dealer says to bring it in when it is happening. Too bad they are not open 24/7. They said that it hasn't saved any codes, and really after turning it off and on again clears the problems. Really though, there shouldn't be issues to begin with.

With two service dogs in the family, we needed a bigger vehicle. The 2024 Tiguan is perfect! It's just the right size for our family, roomy and feels so luxurious. I love the double sun roof and automatic rear lift gate. It has all the bells and whistles that I loved in my Passat and so much more. I could not be happier with my purchase.

Good but not great

Bought the 2024 Tiguan over a used 2022 Subaru Forester due to winter windshield repair and dash screen quality/reliability concerns. Fuel economy is probably lacking due to the jerky acceleration. Mostly disappointed in the lack of finish details such as under car exhaust with the lack of exhaust tips for venting away from the vehicle. Extremely unsafe for winter travelers who may have to keep the motor running while parked in a rest stop or stopped in roadside slowdowns. Also, the lack of fog/driving lights with no installation options from the dealer. Also disappointed in the manual adjust passenger seat.

We traded in a 2021 SE for a 2023. We really didn’t care for the 1st gear meshed with the tiny 4 cylinder, but the price was hard to beat. It’s a nice vehicle otherwise. Parenthetically, my wife doesn’t trust the auto stop/start feature after the problems we had with our 2021 (abrupt failure of the system in the middle of a busy intersection….34 computer faults per dealer).

23 TIGUAN SEL R LINE GREAT SUV

I have owned the 23 SEL RLINE for almost 2 years now and have had absolutely zero problems. I drive on long trips and usually get about 30 MPG driving between 65- 80 MPH. I just wish it had more room in trunk, otherwise a solid SUV.

I love my Tiguan so much! It's got all of the luxuries I want at a price that doesn't break my bank. I've owned my Tiguan for nearly a month and I' m loving it. As Edmunds suggests, the transmission does have it's quirks, but overall I've had a smooth enjoyable experience with my Tiguan SEL R-Line. Really love this vehicle and all the goodies that VW has put into it!

We got the 2024 Tiguan (for a very much discounted price compared to Toyota or Honda in our area), and are very happy with it after 20k miles. Love the styling, great handling and ride quality. Get ~ 33 mpg in the suburbs with occasional city driving.

I've had many VWs thought the last few years and I heard a lot of negative things about the Tiguan, first of all Volkswagen have quirks which I like, the latest is a 4 motion version, it drives great no hesitation at all, much better at merging onto the expressway even in normal mode than the Atlas I had, fuel mileage is decent comfortable seats the haptic buttons on the HVAC and steering wheel are easy to get used to, the ease of controls is easy to learn for the safety systems, what I don't like I turn off. If I could change anything I'd like the engine to be quieter on acceleration, the steering wheel to be able to go lower, all minor gripes that are not important, the best way I found to understand VWs is to read the owners manual, and I follow the break in procedure, for 600miles, every vw I've had has been reliable and well put together and intuitive, can't say the same though for the service departments lol luckily I don't deal with them much

First new car after graduating college, working hard and saving for my first big purchase. At 15K miles I now have a bad wheel bearing and engine oil consumption issues. The dealer says it needs a new head gasket. I thought purchasing a VW would provide me with longevity and dependability but, I was terribly wrong. I've gone through 6 quarts of oil in just under 5K miles. I can only guess what that's done for my catalytic converter and sensors. Glad I opted out of the extended coverage because I won't be keeping it that long.
