Passat 2.0T #1 Lemon !!
This is absolutely the worst car that I have ever owned in my 40 some years of owning cars. It has been a nightmare with breakdowns , burning up to 1 liter of oil per tank of gas . Misfiring , sending out smokescreens .No help or assistance from local VW dealers , VW corporate head office not the least bit helpful . I took care of this 2007 Passat since buying it in 2007 , the engine died at 165000kms (102000 miles) spent $5800 replacing the engine with another 2.0T from the salvage yard ,79000kms on the engine or 42000 miles . VW dealer installed it . Took delivery worked fine ,but burnt oil ,engine died the same death as the original engine 6 weeks after being installed .
Unreliable and cheaply made make for an expensive piece of junk
I bought this car new in 2007, have never missed a scheduled service, and take pride in keeping a neat and clean car. My car should be in tip top shape, but it is a broken piece of junk. The transmission, turbo, and starter have all been replaced. The engine light is always coming on. The electrical system has had work done several times. I often either can't open or can't close the windows or sunroof and the back lift-gate gets stuck partially open. Sometimes the computer language switches to German, but restarting the car fixes that. The interior finishes started deteriorating and coming apart at 30,000 miles. Today, two days after its 75,000 mile scheduled service, it won't start.

Nice overall, watch the blindspot
The Passat's size is excellent. One problem is the low windows and size, create a blind area on the driver's side for oncoming cars. You need to crain your neck 'round to make sure there isn't a vehicle in the lane immediately on your left. Otherwise this is a fun car.
Unreliable, tons of problems
We purchased this car in March of 2006. We now have 34K miles on the car. It has been towed to various VW dealers four times. Twice we were going 65 mph on the freeway and it stalled. We've had the entire A/C system replaced (that was fun, going up a hill, a grinding sound and tons of smoke and the car died), many belts have broken, various sensors have malfunctioned, electrical problems and I could go on. We had 2 other VWs previously and no problems. Thankfully our other car is a BMW which is night & day compared to the Passat.
Will never buy VW again
I bought this beautiful car because of its great exterior design, mixture of audi parts, and the reliability that we have had with vw cars for the past 3 decades. That being said..what a terrible mistake it was to buy this car. The check engine light came on between EVERY oil change. It was so bad that I sold the car only months after completely paying it off. The past 3 months included a $2,000 repair because of a bad sensor...yes, a sensor. The sensor was built into the steering column and the entire column had to be replaced. A month later, bad gas hose valve..$300. A month later, another bad valve..$300. Not to mention the other repairs covered by vw. Terrible car..just terrible
