Which 3500 does Edmunds recommend?

There are dozens of available configurations for the Ram 3500. For a basic workhorse, we recommend the base-level Tradesman. The luxury-oriented Limited trim level is on the opposite side of the spectrum. Can't decide? The Big Horn/Lone Star trim level is an appealing middle-ground pick.

Overall rating

The Ram 3500 was a class leader even before this year's redesign. Now with new safety and technology features, increased towing and payload capacities, and updated powertrains, it sets the bar in the heavy-duty truck segment that much higher.

Underneath, the Ram 3500 gets several updates for 2019. Ram is using more high-strength steel and aluminum in the frame and throughout the bodywork, reducing the truck's overall weight. There are new bushings and mounts to increase ride comfort and decrease noise. And for more standard power, the Ram 3500 now has the previously optional 6.4-liter V8 instead of the old standard 5.7-liter V8. It's hooked up to a new eight-speed automatic transmission. And, of course, you can still get the Ram's optional 6.7-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel (made by Cummins) paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Inside, the 2019 Ram 3500's cabin can be decked out in some surprisingly premium materials in the higher trim levels. Feature highlights include a new optional 12-inch Uconnect infotainment screen and available safety options such as adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and blind-spot monitoring. Of course, if all you want is a basic work truck, Ram can set you up that way, too.

None of these upgrades or changes make the 2019 Ram 3500 any less capable. In fact, it's the opposite. With more power and less weight than previous models, the Ram 3500 can tow and haul more than ever before. And with more interior tech than ever, it might be the most livable heavy-duty truck we've ever driven.

2019 Ram 3500 models

The 2019 Ram 3500 is available in three cab styles, with two bed lengths and two powertrains. Depending on the configuration, the 3500 is offered in five different trim levels: Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn and Limited.

Cab styles include a two-door regular cab, a four-door crew cab and a four-door jumbo crew cab called Mega Cab. The regular cab comes with an 8-foot bed only, while the crew cab has either the long bed or a short bed (6 feet 4 inches). The Mega Cab rides on the same wheelbase as the long-bed crew cab but combines an even bigger cabin with the short bed.

The standard engine for the Ram 3500 is a 6.4-liter V8 (410 hp, 429 lb-ft of torque) paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. A turbocharged 6.7-liter diesel six-cylinder engine is also available. In its Standard Output form, the 6.7-liter diesel engine puts out 370 hp and 850 lb-ft and is matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. The High Output version of the diesel powerplant generates 400 hp and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with a six-speed Aisin-sourced automatic transmission.

The Tradesman is the most basic trim. Standard feature highlights include 18-inch steel wheels, a locking tailgate, air conditioning, a 40/20/40-split front bench, a tilt-only steering wheel, a 3.5-inch driver information display, vinyl upholstery, and a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, a USB port, and a 5-inch touchscreen interface.

Power windows and locks, including the locking tailgate, are standard on crew-cab models, as are power-adjustable heated mirrors. Regular-cab models have manual controls and non-heated mirrors by default.

The Big Horn (Lone Star for shoppers in Texas) equips it with chrome exterior trim, 18-inch alloy wheels (chrome on the Lone Star), an integrated trailer brake controller, remote locking and unlocking, a power-sliding rear window, remote ignition, cloth upholstery, carpeted floors, and full power accessories for all body styles.

The Laramie builds off the Big Horn/Lone Star and adds more chrome trim, a soft-closing tailgate, LED headlights and taillights, foglights, a 115-volt power outlet, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, remote ignition, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 7-inch driver display screen, a power-adjustable driver's seat, leather upholstery, driver-seat memory functions, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 10-speaker surround-sound audio system, HD and satellite radio, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Longhorn supplements the Laramie's substantial features list by including a chrome mesh grille, a spray-in bedliner, LED bed lights, automatic high beams, automatic wipers, upgraded leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, wood interior and steering wheel trim, power-adjustable pedals with memory settings, front bucket seats, heated rear seats, and a navigation system.

The Limited trim comes with power-deployable running boards, 20-inch wheels, additional chrome exterior trim, the RamBox cargo management system (which includes bedside storage compartments, an adjustable bed divider and tie-downs), and special black leather upholstery.

Many upper-trim features are available on lower trim levels as part of packages or as stand-alone options. Other optional equipment highlights include a load-leveling air suspension, a cargo-view camera, a 12-inch Uconnect touchscreen, wireless smartphone charging, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, a 360-degree surround-view parking camera, fifth-wheel trailer preparation, a 17-speaker stereo system, a CD player and a sunroof.

Each vehicle typically comes in multiple versions that are fundamentally similar. The ratings in this review are based on our first drive of the Ram 3500 Limited (turbodiesel 6.4L inline-6 | 6-speed automatic | 4WD).

Driving

The standard V8 is powerful, but the 6.7-liter turbodiesel is where it's at. The abundance of power and torque makes moving this massive truck easy, even with a trailer in tow. Despite its size, the 3500 is relatively easy to drive, even with the dual rear-wheel setup. The steering is light enough for quick turns and highway maneuvers.

Comfort

The 3500 has a bumpy ride most of the time, but it's not unbearable. A quiet interior, well-padded seats and a forgiving suspension make for a totally competent highway cruiser.

Interior

With all sorts of available leather-wrapped surfaces and wood grains on the dash, the 3500 can look and feel like a plush luxury SUV. Buttons and interior controls are laid out in a logical and easy-to-use manner, and there's plenty of space in every seating position for adults. Thanks to large windows and a relatively low beltline, visibility is excellent.

Utility

The standard V8 in the Ram 3500 can tow as much as 18,210 pounds, depending on the cab configuration you choose. Go with the big turbodiesel and that capability nearly doubles to a maximum 35,100 pounds. The six-speed Aisin automatic paired to the Cummins turbodiesel has relatively quick upshifts, and it doesn't hunt for gears on long grades.

Technology

The optional 12-inch Uconnect screen (the same one that debuted in the latest Ram 1500) is one of the most impressive screens in any new vehicle today. The Uconnect software that powers it is quick to respond to commands, easy to learn, and supported by ultra-crisp graphics. Optional safety tech such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and forward collision warning are excellent additions on such a work-oriented rig.

After much researching and internet surfing plus test driving over 20 truck types and models, we ended up with a new 2019 RAM 3500 Crew Cab tradesman 4x4 Dually. We needed a truck that was an easy daily plus could pull our 12,000 LB fifth wheel, but also did not cost me over $48k and this fit the bill perfectly. I only purchased a few optional packages on the Tradesman Crew Cab 4x4 Dually, which included the Tradesman Level 2 Equipment Group, Chrome Appearance Group, LED Bed Lighting, Parksense Rear Park Assistance and of course Trailer Brake Control and a few other minor things but cant remember what they were. TIP: I had the Dealership install the aftermarket B&W gooseneck/fifth wheel stuff, which honestly is better then stock prep. So far the truck comes with lots of standard features what usually you would have to pay extra for, and here are some of the options I can recall that are included : Cruise Control, Tire Pressure Information on all 6 tires (Dually), UConnect, adjustable dash viewing options, configurable truck option in settings, Integrated Voice Control, Bluetooth Phone connectivity, Multiple USB connections, Rear storage under rear seats that fold up and out of the way, Power windows with one-touch down AND up too, power locks, power mirrors with blind spot mirrors plus flip out for towing, 32 Gallon tank (wow), Comes with both 4-pin and 7-pin connections for trailers, power rear sliding window, Rear window defroster, of course A/C and heater is in it (remember when A/C was optional, ha ha), Remote keyless entry, push button start (no key needed, just the FOB in pocket) and SiriusXM 1-year included plus several other things I forget. I did just get it last night, so I am still learning all of the features. BTW, I was able to get this for only $39k with extended warranty, after dealing with Dealer a lot, lol. This comes standard with a 3yr/36,000 bumper to bumper warranty (I increased warranty to 75k miles), plus a 5yr/60,000 mile Powertrain warranty on Gas engine (100k miles on diesel).

New 2019 Ram 3500 Laramie has a lot of improvements comparing to my 2017 Ram 3500 Laramie. However, it came with a lot of quality/technical issues. My truck has 700 (seven hundred) miles on odometer, out of first two weeks of ownership I was deriving vehicle one week, another week it's in service. *** Previously owned 2017 Ram 3500 Laramie 4x4 with Cummins Diesel, heavy-duty transmission and dual rear wheels, I've learned a few lessons and ordered this 2019 Ram 3500 Laramie in configuration, optimal for my task (10% recreational towing, 90% commute). By eliminating a few options that I almost never used previously, I have saved almost ~20k on purchase price. I decided to go with gasoline HEMI engine, no 4x4 and standard transmission with 2019 Ram 3500. *** The first catch was with specifications: Ram advertises ~150–200 lbs more in both payload and towing capacity in their marketing materials that actual vehicle was built and delivered (they explained it as those measurements were done for Tradesman trim and not applicable to higher trims like my Laramie). *** After delivery immediately second issue was realized – I was reinstalling fifth-wheel PullRite sliding hitch from my 2017 Ram 3500 and have found that my brand new 2019 Ram 3500 has distance between fifth-wheel prep sockets 3 mm longer on passenger side than on driver side. Fortunately, ISR frame by PullRite could accommodate this but on the length limit. *** Another surprise I have got after a few hundred miles – fueling truck was taking almost 40 minutes as nozzle was clicking back every quarter gallon. Dealership, after inspection, stated that "fuel line was crossed during manufacturing process" and still waiting for required parts for warranty replacement. *** Interior is definitely updated and feels much more luxury. I don't recommend going with their 12" screen as it's still driven by relatively old software, slow and buggy. Another catch – if you order Group 2 option you will have wireless charging for your smartphone, but will still need to connect device with original cable to use Apple Car Play (i.e. Google Maps). *** Comparing 2017 and 2019, I don't see too many visible exterior improvements (i.e. panoramic sunroof is available only on 2019 Ram 1500), the best difference for me so far – front LED lights, makes a huge difference driving at night. *** HEMI pulls my 16.5k lbs trailer very nice, I can't tell the difference in towing between my 2017 Ram with Diesel / AISIN and 2019 Ram HEMI. I didn't drive in mountains yet, but don't think gasoline engine doesn't have exhaust brake, it actually doesn't need it. For engine braking purposes you downshift from steering wheel with 2019 Ram 3500 HEMI. *** Overall, great improvements, but looks like Quality Control needs to be greatly improved at Ram factory.

The New High Output Engine is great lots of power. Took a 1000+ mile trip towing a gooseneck trailer, mileage towing at 60-65 MPH was 12.1 MPG. Towing at 70-75 mileage dropped to 11.9 still not bad for a 3500 Ram Dually. Dave Smith Motors made this all possible with the best deals lowest prices and haggle free buying. One would be foolish to buy a Ram from anyone else

2019 Ram Heavy Duty 2500 and 3500 First Look

DAN EDMUNDS: We're here in Detroit getting a sneak peek at the Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups. Last year in Detroit, they debuted the Ram 1500 pickup. And we were so impressed that we bought one. We put tons of miles on it. And we haven't been disappointed. But that's also set expectations really high for this heavy duty pickup. Can lightning strike twice? We're about to find out. Last year's base engine was a 5.7 liter Hemi V8. The 6.4 liter Hemi V8 was optional. This year, the 6.4 is the standard offering. But it's not just that. They've gotten rid of the six-speed automatic and given it an eight-speed automatic. That was an amazing change when they did it to the Ram 1500 several years ago, and we expect more of the same here. But if you don't want a gas V8, they've really improved the 6.7 liter Cummins Turbo Diesel, as well. It's still a straight six, but now the base version of it has 370 horsepower and 850 pound feet of torque, which is a big improvement. But if you get a 3500, you can opt for the marquee high-output version, which makes 400 horsepower and-- get ready for this-- 1,000 pound feet of torque. Amazing. Ram is putting all of that torque to good use, because the maximum tow rating of a 3,500 dually with that engine is 35,100 pounds. That's almost 4,000 pounds higher than it was last year. And the maximum payload is 7,680 pounds, which is higher than anyone else, as well. But they've also got the suspension to do it. Both versions of the truck-- the 2500 and the 3500-- offer an optional rear air suspension. That was true last year. But this year, they've added a new capability-- a bed lowering mode that allows you to lower the hitch ball or the tailgate two inches. You can actually back under the trailer and raise the truck up and make the coupling. You don't have to jack the trailer up and down as far to make the connection. That's something I really am looking forward to playing with. One of the things that really got us excited about the Ram 1500 is what they did inside the cab. And the Ram 2500 and 3500 are nearly as impressive. I'll get to the nearly in a minute, but here's the stuff that's really cool. You've got the 12-inch touchscreen option. The 8.4 is also available. They've also just improved the quality of all the switch gear and the materials. I mean, this is a really, really nice place to spend time. And if you're going to tow long distances, like this thing is made to tow, that's really important. This truck also has something that other trucks in the class don't have. You can get a safety suite with automatic emergency braking-- which actually involves the trailer brakes, as well, which is really unique-- and adaptive cruise control that will work all the way down to a stop. That package also comes with rain sensing wipers, LED headlights, and automatic high beams. It's a pretty unique setup in a heavy duty truck. If you get the gasoline V8, there's a rotary shifter for the 8-speed automatic. But the diesels have a six-speed automatic that's controlled by this column shifter. So whichever way you want it, they've got it. One thing that's missing, though, is the manual. Last time, you could get a D-tuned version of the diesel with a manual transmission. This time, they're not offering it. It's also got the Swiss army knife center console we first saw in the 1500. I mean, look at this thing. It opens up in all these different ways. There's all this space, a million ways to connect your devices, a wireless charging pad. And it's got side pockets here on each side. This is really nice. But there's a couple things missing. One thing that's missing is, this steering wheel doesn't telescope. It tilts, but it doesn't telescope like the Ram 1500. And it's also got an older design on the knobs, here. So it's like they changed a lot of things, but they left a couple of things the same as last year. But from the driver's seat, you would barely notice that. The back half of the Ram Heavy Duty cab is a little different from the 1500. The crew cab is the same as it was before. So it's not quite as big as the Ram 1500's crew cab. But that's because Ram has always had a mega cab for the 2500 and 3500. And that's what I'm sitting in right now. It's got more leg room than the 2500 crew cab. And it has this trick-- seats recline-- which is something that the 1500 did in the crew cab. This one does it in the mega cab. And it reclines back so you actually get more leg room as you recline the seat. It's also got the same nice features on the back of the center console. It's a flow-through console with vents. There's USB and USB-Cs and a 110 outlet. And that's pretty much like what we saw in the 1500. So the crew cab's a little smaller than a 1500 crew cab, but the mega cab-- it's right there. And it's got the recliner that makes it a really nice place to spend time. All in all, there's a lot to like here-- the cab, the tech, the air suspension. And it's hard to argue with 1,000 pound feet of torque. That's a lot of lightning. I think they've struck twice. There are a whole lot more videos where this came from. The Sierra 3500HD has been redesigned for 2020, but that vehicle wasn't available at the time of our review's publication. So, for the purposes of this comparison, we're referencing the 2019 GMC. With that in mind, the current Sierra is a robust and capable heavy-duty pickup truck. It has massive towing power and a spacious interior, and it is reasonably priced. But it falls behind the Ram in terms of available tech and safety equipment.

If you don't need the pulling power of a 3500-series pickup on a regular basis but a light-duty 1500 won't do the trick, you may want to consider the Ram 2500. A High-Tech Interior and Some of the Highest Towing Capability Ever

While million-dollar supercars and concept vehicles may get the spotlight on the world stage, heavy-duty trucks also push the envelope of automotive progress. They give average consumers access to more capability every year, and the power numbers keep rising. The fully redesigned 2019 Ram 3500 is an excellent example of a truck that pushes the boundaries and shows just how far consumer vehicles have come.

What's New?

Unless you go with a chassis cab or a commercial vehicle, the 3500 is the most capable pickup in Ram's lineup. The most obvious change for the 2019 Ram 3500 is its updated appearance that is highlighted by a new grille design, new headlights and taillights, and a flashy new interior.

Under the hood, the Ram features a revised powertrain lineup. The previously standard 5.7-liter V8 engine is no longer available. In its place is the previously optional 6.4-liter V8 that's now paired to a new eight-speed automatic transmission. The turbocharged 6.7-liter six-cylinder diesel is still optional, and it still comes with a six-speed automatic.

The heavy-duty Ram also gets chassis and suspension updates. The frame features several new lighter-weight parts, plus the Ram uses more high-strength steel and an aluminum hood. Suspension bushings are also new, as are the engine mounts and exhaust hangers, all of which help reduce noise and vibration in the cabin. Ram says it has also decreased the truck's drag coefficient with the redesign, adding active grille shutters and making the truck more aerodynamically efficient.

How Capable Is It?

The 2500 is capable of towing some massive cargo, but the Ram 3500 is king when it comes to pulling a trailer. The standard V8 in the Ram 3500 puts out 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque — a respectable set of numbers for sure. With that engine and with the right cab-and-bed configuration, you can have a rig with a potential maximum payload rating of 7,680 pounds.

Want to pull a trailer? The Ram 3500, in the right configuration, can tow as much as 18,210 pounds with the standard V8. Power delivery is strong under full throttle, with lots of low-end grunt and a satisfying growl from under the hood. The eight-speed automatic is an excellent addition, providing quick, smooth shifts across the rev range.

Fitted with the optional turbocharged 6.7-liter diesel six-cylinder engine, the Ram 3500's numbers get even crazier. The 6.7-liter Cummins-sourced engine gets a new cast-iron cylinder head, a new engine block with new exhaust valves and springs, and new rocker arms. It also has lighter and stronger pistons, new connecting rods, new bearings, and an all-new exhaust manifold. Thanks to all those changes, the Ram's optional engine is putting out 400 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque.

At 6,910 pounds, payload capacity with the diesel engine is almost as high as with gasoline engine. Towing capability shoots up to 35,100 pounds, which is an increase of 4,100 pounds compared to last year's truck. The diesel powertrain makes that classic diesel rumble at idle, but on the highway it settles down nicely, allowing for a relatively quiet ride.

How Does It Drive?

The 3500 is a big and heavy rig, but it's not difficult to drive. The steering is light enough that you can turn quickly and maneuver on the highway. On the open highway, the Ram 3500's ride quality is, as you'd probably expect, bumpy. Something this capable needs seriously beefy underpinnings. Luckily, that doesn't completely ruin the ride quality. What road imperfections make their way into the cabin are relatively muffled and totally bearable. And that's especially true when you put some weight in the bed to settle things down a bit.

The 3500's cabin is also pleasingly quiet. Ram added active noise cancellation technology to the 2019 truck in addition to the aforementioned changes to the chassis. The changes, Ram says, have reduced cabin noise by 10 decibels — welcome news for anyone towing long distances.

How Luxurious Is It?

The 2019 Ram 3500 comes in five trim levels: Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Longhorn and Limited. Depending on the trim level you select, there are four configurations to choose from: single cab with an 8-foot bed, crew cab with a 6-foot-4-inch bed, crew cab with an 8-foot bed, and mega cab with a 6-foot-4-inch bed. If you go with a crew-cab or mega-cab configuration, there's more than enough room for tall adults in every seating position.

The rear seats are just as comfortable to sit on as the front seats are. You can also recline them or fold into a flat surface for storing large items. Ram has clearly succeeded in making this as comfortable a rig as possible without compromising capability.

At the base trim levels, the 3500 feels and looks like a basic workhorse, as it should. Buyers who aren't interested in high-tech options can still have a bare-bones pickup — or at least one that plays the part. On higher trim levels, you get access to all sorts of available leather upholstery options and different wood-trim choices. The seats feel plush and supportive, and there are lots of soft-touch points throughout the cabin. Combine all of this with the optional 12-inch Uconnect screen — the same one that debuted in the latest Ram 1500 — and you've got a truly impressive cabin.

Other notable options from the Lone Star on up include LED headlights and taillights, a 10-speaker or 17-speaker optional stereo, an 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen (or the previously mentioned 12-inch screen), heated front seats, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and forward collision mitigation with emergency braking.

New for 2019 is a 360-degree surround-view camera that will certainly be appreciated on such a big vehicle if you're ever trying to fit it into a tight spot. It's part of a system that also allows for multiple trailer-camera setups, including a camera inside your trailer or a split screen that allows you to see the corners of your trailer as you move along. Also new is a trailer tire-pressure monitoring system that can provide readouts for up to six pickup tires and 12 trailer tires.

How Much Does It Cost?

At the base Tradesman trim level, in regular-cab configuration with rear-wheel drive, the Ram 3500 starts at $36,590, including a $1,695 destination fee — a crew-cab model checks in at $39,995 including destination. Most midlevel trims are in the $40,000 to $55,000 range, while a top-trim Limited 3500 in mega-cab configuration (with four-wheel drive, the only option at that trim level) checks in at $68,745. It can climb even further when you opt for the optional Cummins turbodiesel engine, which adds $9,100 to the sticker price.

Should I buy one?

The 2019 Ram 3500 is one of the most capable and well-equipped vehicles on the road. If you need to tow massive trailers on a regular basis, it should be right at the top of your list.
