a dream
I love this car. i found a 2002 passat with 5000 miles on it. It was the exact color i wanted. I counldn't ask for more. When i sit in it i feel as if i'm in a lexus. It drives exteremly smoothly.I find myself filling up on gas more then in my toyota but, it's worth it. I love everything about this car thus far. It's quiet, and smooth. I like the heaviness of it. I feel safe. It's a great car. I was skeptical about a vw, i always had a toyota; not anymore.
Love it!
This car was the first car that my husband and I bought together. I think we will be lyal VW customers for life. The car rides wonderfully, has plenty of get-up-and-go and is VERY comfortable! The cargo space rivals that of most mid-sized SUV's and it gets FAR BETTER gas milage than most SUV's! We are so thrilled with this car!

I love my Passat Wagon!
Two things I would add: 1. I loved the Keyless entry that I had on my '95 Taurus. It is a wonderful item to guard against locking your keys in the car but still able to get into the car. 2. I liked the way the Taurus headlights turned off automatically after getting out of the car & walking away.
A VW'r for Life
I truly thought I'd want a Volvo... but the VW changed my mind. After tons of research and test drives, it was a no-brainer. The wagon has lived up to its expectations and then some. It handles beautifully, has amazing pep, and the VW service cannot be beat.
Passat Wagon is most fun and practical
We bought out Passat GLX with a manual 5-speed because the dealer gave us a very good deal. My wife also enjoys driving the 5-speed because it is so smooth and effortless. The V6 is very luxurious and has good power, especially at low rpm's in traffic. This car eats up the highway miles in comfort and style. I see all the SUV drivers staring at my VW wagon with envy. My wife thinks the Passat looks so much better than the new Accord and Camry, and I agree. We've had it for one year and 18k miles with no problems!
Electrical issues - poor reliability
My first passat (1998 model) was replaced through the "lemon law" because engine would stall suddenly and the dealer could never solve the problem. This happened a half dozen times, every couple thousand miles on average. I thought I was unlucky, and gave another chance to this second passat. Now, I'm well on my way to going to the lemon law again, because of an oil pressure problem that the dealer cannot fix (after three attempts...). This is too much to be a coincidence.
6 year review
Bought the car new in 3/2002, very fun to drive. However, would agree that it is expensive to maintain. Oil changes and recommended mileage checkups are not cheap. Have read many postings about changing the timing belt between 60-70K (VW manual recommends 90K), plan to do, but will run 1000-1200K at an independent shop ($1500 at dealership). Concerned about oil sludge issues since the dealership did not use full synthetic until VW announced it should be standard (2004).

Great Car!!
We have owned this car for a year and half and have only had one problem that was immediately replaced through recall. This car runs great and is a pleasure to drive. I especially like the interior layout and amount of room.
Hub Cap Nightmare
Beware of snap-on hubcaps and cheap roof rack material. I have had 4 hubcaps come off after 2 different VW dealerships did maintenance and rotated my tires. I also had a plastic piece of my roof rack fall off. It is normal now to look around my car to see if everything is in place before I drive it. Is this Quality?

Drivers wanted?? Make a car that drives.
This car has been nothing but a nightmare, as has been dealer and VW corporate service. Ignition coils failed on 3 separate occasions because they won't fix them all at once even with the recall. Dealer won't fix for 10 days. Placing a new car seat in a family car should not wear through the fabric in months. Now a new recall to prevent a fuel line fire if you get a flat tire.
3 strikes and your OUT - Never again!
93 Passat GLX, 97 Audi A4 and 02 GLX Wagon, not one could reach 90K mileage. Wagon blew water pump, blew head gasket, bent valves $5,000 to fix. This all happened in 2 minutes on the highway not a chance to save the car and of course is outside of extended warranty. Good bye German Unreliability Hello Japanese Reliability!
good stuff
Silver w/black cloth and weather pkg, as well as luxury pkg. Stereo's great, the dials for it are too fussy. comfortable, beats the crap out of Accords, Camrys, etc. They're all boring.
Selling my '02 Passat wagon would be equivalent to
I purchased my '02 Passat Wagon new. I ordered exactly what I wanted. 15 years later, it has 213K miles and I still love the car. I was so hopeful that the Chattanooga TN plant would produce a Passat wagon, but they cave to the SUV market and will produce the Atlas. I will look at the Atlas since I live in TN, but it's HUGE. I will look at the 2018 Tiguan, but it won't get the same gas mileage and it will look and drive like an SUV.....I will likely drive on with my beloved wagon for another 100K. The only stressful maintenance I had with the '02 Passat was ignition coil failure resulting in being towed. The fix was less than than $300 and the towing was ~$400. I love the Harpers VW dealership in Knoxville. All the maintenance has been routine and as reasonably priced as one can expect.
- Performance
Nice looking/performing MONEY PIT:(
We bought this as a lease return with about 20k on it. Now has 68,000. Great motor fun to drive with good power for size. Be sure to be close to a repair shop though. I have replaced a bad water pump(plastic?) and timing belt at 40k. 2 sets of front brakes and rotors, one set of rear calipers with rotors. Both cv shafts, lower ball joint, tie rod end. 2 coils and 2 sets of plugs. I will never own a light beige cloth interior, impossible to keep clean, peeling paint inside, plastic trim breaks easily. 3 sets of tires in 68K. Brake booster froze up(fixed under warranty recall). Now the temp gauge is going out. Enough already! No more VW's. Honda/Toyota may be boring but you won't go broke.
GLX Passatt - Review After Four Years
The Passat is not a reliable / dependable car. Mine is on its third set of new REAR rotors and fourth set of pads in 37,000 miles. The first three times were under warranty (dealership asked NO questions). They made it seem like it was a problem with that year of car. Now, after the warranty is expired, they are refusing to accommodate us with new back brakes and are claiming that we always paid for the pads (which wasn't the case). The radio stopped working and was replaced (no questions asked). You cannot change your taillights and headlights. Ours burned out about seven times! Also, this car has had problems with its electrical system, throttle lag (which is dangerous), and its serpentine belt has already been replaced - tires too.
