At 160K, my Passat Wagon is proving to be quite the reliable workhorse. I may have lucked out, I realize, but she has been running nearly flawlessly. Annoying stuff along the way but has been limited to mostly quirky VW stuff. The module in the driver's side door was a MAJOR bummer 3 years ago ($1K+). Was rear ended very hard recently and frame didn't budge. The Ford Focus that hit us -- front end was utterly destroyed. Body guys were quite impressed. And so is my mechanic. The 1.8T is one of the best European engines (sad it's no longer) -- fun, reliable, fairly efficient. I will drive this car into the 200K's -- because I can hardly find another Euro wagon in stick! Again, sad.

I've had my Passat for almost 2 years. Bought it used with 9,000 miles on it. I now have 38,000 miles on it. It's been in the shop 5 - 6 times. All problems (trans, cv boot, rear rotors, seat motor) were repaired by the dealer an no cost to me. It rides great, gets good mpg with no repeat or nagging problems. It's holding great resale value and looking good. I think I'll keep it a while longer.

bought the car new initially had a problem with the windshield wiper relay (wipers quit working in hard rain) which was poorly handled by the dealership. Had to threaten with lawsuit to get them to properly diagnose and replace. few other problems so far. The "home link" controller broke out of the sunshade and was fixed under warranty. starter motor gave up at 45000 miles and VW would not pay for replacement (very disappointed as this is a highway vehicle with very few starts per day). handle of glove compartment broke off (did not fix yet). multi-function display is getting very dim. one new CV joint @ 84Kmiles. car has been great otherwise pleasure and fun to drive (see below)

this car was great when i bought it but i thought the ride was a little soft. i also got used to the power rather quickly. so, i got a turbo chip and now it has 210 hp, 247 ft-lbs of torque, and it's much more fun to drive now. i probably need a larger exhaust to handle the extra pressure from the turbo. i also put on lowering springs, stiffer shocks, a rear anti-sway bar, and 18" Volk wheels. now it's super fun! no problems with the car that haven't been fixed quickly under warranty, and those were very few. great car, especially for the money!

My local dealer wanted an extra $500 to ship the exact car I wanted to my area so I drove 200mi to get it myself. I saw no reason to spend the extra $ for a heavier, less economical 6 cyl (getting a chip) However I think it blows that I can't get power seats with the 4cyl And the radio reception SUCKS!! Ive been to my local dealer 2x and they claim its fine. Other than that, the car ROCKS! Performance is great, it's the best-looking wagon on the market (except perhaps the unattainable Audi RS6 Avant), I can fit all three dogs plus three friends in it, and its comfortable as hell. Just need to get that chip, Koni shocks, sport exhaust....

ECT, Coil Pack, Fuel Sensors. These three poor electronic parts will fail on you. I hope you have the longer warranty. Having owned Japanese (Toyota) vehicles for 14 years, I was forced to get a sportier car as Toyota just doen't make a fast car anymore (less you have the budget for a Lexus). Though the turbo has spinup lag, its still quick for a 1.8ltr. Throw in a Wetterauer chip and you have a 210hp 4 cylinder. The car *is* fun to drive. Just not fun to own. Could they be forcing us to lease? Try this: lay down a split seat (rear) and drive around with only the sunroof open. if your ears don't bleed or explode....

My car is currently 2 years old with around 40,000 miles on it. It started off great. Then after 1 month I had it in the shop because I ran out o gas when it said I still had 1/2 tank! It took over a week to fix. Then I had to take it in again 3 other times for a leaking gas tank. 2 months ater that the car started stalling out when I slowed at intersections, unable to restart. Took it in and they had it for 4 days and claimed to have fixed it. 1 week later same thing.... Long story short, the problem is stillnot resolved and not once have they given me a loner car! Do not buy this car.

I've read some of the reviews for '02 Passats, sounds like a bunch of whining to me. I have an '00 wagon, V6, 5 spd, leather, sunroof. Great looking wagon, very roomy. Yes, it's expensive, if you get repairs done at the dealer. Don't be stupid, use an independent garage. I drive 25K a year, and have put 140K on a car that was a 3 yr old lease trade in with 48K miles. So I'm closing in on 190K. I just had the car checked out by a private mechanic. The check engine light came on about six weeks ago. I've been told that the catalytic converter is failing, but the mechanic said "just keep driving it, the car's in great condition". The car still has the original clutch.

I have now had my Passat Wagon for 7 weeks and 2600 miles. At first I was a little leery of getting the 1.8, wondering if it would have enough power. After having had the car for 2600 miles, I would recommend the 1.8 highly!! The car is a blast to drive, the Monsoon sound system is excellent, and the comfort for me (6'2", 215lbs) is just great.

For all those who love their car, wait until the coil(s) fail 200 miles from home. VW will not provide free transportation. They will also not replace all the coils. You get back in your car and are still driving a car with faulty coils!!! I will not let my family drive this car further than walking distance from my house. Do yourself a favor and make a different choice. I also own a 2000 GLS Jetta that has the same type of problems and same terrible service.

I purchased a CPO 2002 Passat GLS 1. 8T Wagon in April of 2004 for a cross-Canada trip heading west from Ottawa to Vancouver Island then North through Dawson Creek B.C. (mile 0 of the Alaska Highway) and further north to Great Slave Lake (above the 60th Parallel) and back. The trip totalled 17000km and took 205 hours according to the trip computer. The Passat swallowed all of our gear and never complained through a daily average of 6 hours on the road at speeds anywhere from 30 to 75 mph. We averaged 36mpg over the full distance in 32 days. Nothing went wrong. A flawless trip in a car that left me extremely impressed. I'd buy a new one in a heartbeat.

I am posting to give a favorable thumbs up to my Passat Wagon, which I purchased new in June 2002. Sure it has had a few mechanical failures, and the usual maintenance any car needs. But other then that it's been very reliable, practical and fun to drive. A couple of the issues I have had relate to CV boot joints tearing (normal) and the passenger seat heater going out. I agree that headlight bulbs do burn out more often then normal and that regular maintenance prices are a bit higher. However, it has been and still is a blast to drive, I have great fuel economy (27- 30 mpg, being a wagon is a huge bonus and it beats the compact SUVs or Crossovers any day of the week. It's a keeper until the end.

Love the car, i bought it new and i now have over 32,000 miles on it. I love the overall looks of it. Wish i had gotten the 5 Speed, The Tiptronics can be entertaining, but it definately isn't as fun as a manual. A couple of recalls, ignition coils, Transmission computer upgrade, and gas tank protector...service has been very good at my dealership South Shore VW in Hanover Mass. I would give their service dept an 8 out of 10 for my experineces, although i have noticed while waiting for my service to be completed that others aren't having as great a service... Biggest complaint, i am trying to buy another VW, but no one seems to want to call me back, hello!!!

I was originally considering the Jetta GLS with the Lux/leather options. Then I drove the Passat and I had to go for it. The base model suits me just fine. I really LOVE this car. The 5 speed is fun to drive and the Monsoon sound is the best. It feels like a much more expensive car. The ride is rock solid. I had an Audi 200 (1990) before this and feel that I traded up to the Passat. The amenities are plentiful. I especially like the lights under the door panels which illuminate upon exit and entry. I obviously, highly recommend this vehicle.

We have '99 Civic SI + '02 Passat wagon. The Honda has had no major issues, meanwhile, the VW: sunroof doesn't respond to dial. The trunk no longer responds to the driver's side button. Alarm sometimes goes off when car is stopped and doors opened. Recently the car floor got very wet... turns out the drainage from the sunroof can get clogged. Apparently the AC is somehow attached to same drainage. Dealer svc mentioned this is a common problem. Seats (cloth because we have dogs) seemed comfortable during the purchase, but are quite painful to some on long-distance drives. IMO a lumbar support location problem. Gear ratios between 1st and 2nd is very poorly spaced. Somewhat noisy, rough ride.

The cargo space rivals that of most mid-sized SUV's and it gets FAR BETTER gas milage than most SUV's! We are so thrilled with this car!

If you insist on buying a Passat, stay away from the 4 cylendar. We have had more problems with this car in two years than I have had with my '96 corolla in 9 years. We had to have it towed twice for ignition coil failures. The passenger side seatbelt broke and it took 2 weeks to get it repaired. Then several trips to the dealer for the check engine light which dumbfounded the technicians. The final straw came on the 25,000 mile service when they told me the rear brake pads and rotors were 90% worn and rusted. AT 25,000 miles!!!. $350.00. The dealer did repair them on warrenty but only after I threatened to get a second opinion. Hmmmm.

When we first test drove this vehicle, i couldn't believe it was a four cylinder. After that, I couldn,t justify the extra $2300 for the six. The car has been fantastic. Why would anyone pay all the extra money for the Audi? The build quality is absolutely first-rate; it gives my CLK cause for alarm. ( just kidding MB )

I bought this car new and I still love it. The driving dynamics and the general build quality are commendable. The fuel economy of the 1.8T is terrific (25 around town, 29-31 on the hwy) yet V6-like acceleration is there when I want it. The Monsoon sound system is great. It's great in the snow (with snow tires). The interior comfort and lighting are super. I have two complaints: a couple things have gone wrong that should not go wrong (clogged heater core) and it is expensive to maintain.

We bought out Passat GLX with a manual 5-speed because the dealer gave us a very good deal. My wife also enjoys driving the 5-speed because it is so smooth and effortless. The V6 is very luxurious and has good power, especially at low rpm's in traffic. This car eats up the highway miles in comfort and style. I see all the SUV drivers staring at my VW wagon with envy. My wife thinks the Passat looks so much better than the new Accord and Camry, and I agree. We've had it for one year and 18k miles with no problems!

My first passat (1998 model) was replaced through the "lemon law" because engine would stall suddenly and the dealer could never solve the problem. This happened a half dozen times, every couple thousand miles on average. I thought I was unlucky, and gave another chance to this second passat. Now, I'm well on my way to going to the lemon law again, because of an oil pressure problem that the dealer cannot fix (after three attempts...). This is too much to be a coincidence.

Two things I would add: 1. I loved the Keyless entry that I had on my '95 Taurus. It is a wonderful item to guard against locking your keys in the car but still able to get into the car. 2. I liked the way the Taurus headlights turned off automatically after getting out of the car & walking away.

We were looking for a mid size wagon- not too many options in our american market. We both loved the way it drove and looked. The manual is short, precise, and has short throws. The steering is very accurate and gives good feedback. Disc brakes are very good, handling and acceleration too. We opted for the turbo. It provides good gas mileage, better than adequate acceleration and one of the best 4 cyl. Size was perfect for us. Seating is comfortable for 5 - not as big as the new camry/altima/accord. Luggage room is amazing on the wagon. After 11,000 miles we are extremely happy that we purchase this car and keep getting compliments from people.

The only annoying thing is a rattle from the dash. Overall, we are very pleased, the turbo engine is quite peppy, and the cargo area is a great size..

After reading complaints from many posts I guess I am one of the lucky owners. I have not experienced many of the problems listed. I have been faithful with maintenance and after 72,000 miles the car still runs well. I do insist on synthetic oil and change it every 5,000. The radio has gone dead a few times and after 6 1/2 years a strip on the window came off. Maintenance is expensive but it has been a good car overall.

Bought the car new in 3/2002, very fun to drive. However, would agree that it is expensive to maintain. Oil changes and recommended mileage checkups are not cheap. Have read many postings about changing the timing belt between 60-70K (VW manual recommends 90K), plan to do, but will run 1000-1200K at an independent shop ($1500 at dealership). Concerned about oil sludge issues since the dealership did not use full synthetic until VW announced it should be standard (2004).

Bought new (3/02), have approx 72K miles, no major problems. Several recalls, but dealership tended to quickly/efficiently. Had the Timing Belt job completed at 65K, did not want to risk going to 95-105K as VW suggests in manual. Very fun car to drive. Based on some posts, I guess I have been lucky. But I do follow the maintenance schedule religiously and use Synthetic oil!

We traded a '99 Accord in for the Passat, and we have loved every minute of it. As a previous BMW & Honda owner, this is definitely a German built auto. The highway ride is comparable to high dollar luxury sedans. You will cruise at 95 mph, and have virtually no sensation of speed or wind noise. The interior is considerably quieter than our previous Accord. We opted for the 5 spd GLS with everything except leather, and it reminds me very much of the 535i I previously owned.

I hated to become a station wagon mom, but I tell you, I love this car! We have a beetle, too, and I love them both!

I love everything about my 2001.5 V6, manual! Its looks, the solid feel, the blue lights, even the rear lights. One of my daytime running lights has burned out after 10 months. Seems waaay too early for that. One concern is that the pillar gets in the way when I'm try to see, change lanes on the front, right side. Drove a Celica for 13 years. I just hope I can come close to this on my Paasat.

Performance on the 1.8T is excellent, the five speed automatic helps with any turbo lag. Once the turbo kicks in good bye pocket-rocket, the old man's moving on down the road. Lots of room, handles well, safety features, and comfort.
