Bought an S that was a dealer loaner. The car is certified with a 12,000 mile warranty that kicks in after the factory warranty. Also got a 25% discount. The car is much more than I expected. More than enough power, great ride, handles great, trunk space is awesome and i have gotten a lot of compliments on the looks. Gas mileage is out if sight. For a base model with “driver assist package” you get a lot of bang for your buck. Very happy with my Jetta.

VW has quality and reliability issues!

Marc T, 07/04/2020

We decided to try the new VW Jetta instead of the Honda Civic for a change. This was a big mistake. The new Jetta has good standard features vs. Honda Civic, and that ends there. The Jetta has rattling noises after few thousand miles, window problem, suspension issues, and transmission oil leaking at 20k miles. It’s a nightmare! Never going to get another VW.

Little Rocket

Missouri Mom, 10/30/2019

My goal was to get an economical car that offered some luxury features. The Jetta R Line fit the bill. I'm short, approaching 50, and I'm weary of buying premium gas for a luxury spaceship. Now I spend half as much on gas and am saving 1/3 in insurance. The 4 cylinder is peppy and fun to drive, it's easy to maneuver in traffic, the blind spot sensors are accurate, and it takes potholes like a champ. The backup camera warns you if something enters your path. I do agree that the "leather" feels plasticky, but it's rugged too. I plan to give this car to my son when he graduates college in four years.

Super Value Loaded SEL

This car gives the safety features found in much more expensive cars. It handles well and is comfortable and roomy. The Beats sound system is almost audiophile quality. It drives more like an Audi than a VW. Larger and more value for the money than a Corolla or Civic and more luxurious. I would get the SEL trim since it is not much more than the R trim and gives more safety technology. Not a rocket but more than adequate acceleration for most people.

Was floored at how inexpensive the manual S model was and the features it has. Driving, it has the typical VW feel we love. Interior is all VW. Simple and classy interior and controls. 1.4L engine is surprising torquey and powerful. This car is all VW. Highway mileage is mid 40s easy. Averaging 38 mpg. Drives great, is very quiet. 54,000 miles. Zero problems.

Test Drive Big Disappointment

Good technology. Quiet smooth ride. As Edmunds comments interior is meh, lackluster, plasticky looking. Deal breaker is handling. Too softly sprung. Took a mild curve on a highway exit ramp at 50; car leaned way too much, and started plowing. Same curve, same speed, with my 2016 Jetta Sport no lean, no plowing. Same story for my previous car a 2006 Jetta TDI. 2019 Jetta SEL Premium has upgrade from 16 inch wheels to 17 inch wheels. 12/9/2020 As a result of this test drive bought a 2017 MK6 Jetta in July of this year; going over the car (former lease car) didn't check seat heaters. Come cold weather found both front seat heaters dead; repaired under warranty 1 week from expiration of warranty, only a few miles under 36k. While car was being repaired, had a 2020 Jetta SEL service loaner. One upgrade for the 2020 Jetta SEL is going from 16" wheels to 17". Tried the service loaner at the same speed, on the same exit ramp mentioned above; the 2020 SEL took the curve with very little leaning, and no plowing. Problem solved. 6/10/2023 MK7 Jetta 1.4 engine good for low speed acceleration; passing powerlacking, works but slow, engine revs high, noisy. Starting with 2022 engine is 1.5, better highway speed passing power. 6/12/2025 - Now driving a 2023 Jetta SEL; loveit.

I leased the SEL model and I feel the car has all I asked for. I only miss the power seats. Feels super powerful for a 1.4 liter as long as you’re not driving with 5 passengers and full trunk. If your life calls for all that cargo, this is not the type of car you need. Gas millage is superb. It really gets 35+ mpg so great gas saver. Technology is awesome, but it takes a while to master all the bells and whistles. I have encounter a couple of issues, which I am sure the warranty will take care of it: 1. driver seat window makes a loud noise going up and down. 2. grinding sound on the engine/transmission when going from 25mph to 35mph. I have read many blogs regarding this issue and I am sure VW must be working on it. As for any new fully redesigned car, the manufacturer has to iron out some wrinkles along the way. these issues aside, I consider that this car offers the best bang for the buck in the segment.

I traded a 2014 E350 Mercedes Benz with a v6 and 0-60 in 6 secs. I don't miss it. My 2019 Jetta has a long warranty, which owning a Mercedes I now value more then I ever did (in over 50 years of owning cars). The MPG is so darn good that I keep thinking I should get gas when the tank is still half full. The Jetta is smooth. Shift the automatic to sport mode, and this car will accelerate to any degree a sane driver would ever want to. Shifts really smooth, the ride is comfortable and it's reasonably quiet. Compared to a new Honda Civic, the Jetta is quicker, more of a luxury feel. Apple Car Play comes standard on the base model and that enables the maps navigation which is great, and updates are free and automatic. Should have gotten the full climate control where I set a temp and the car does the rest. The SEL has anything you'll ever want. As far as getting a larger motor, fahgetaboutit, the 2.0l Turbo has the same torque as the standard 1.4l Turbo. I don't know how VW does it. But the 1.4 gets over 40mpg, almost 50 in eco mode on a flat interstate. Update 17,000 miles and 1 year later. Still love the car. No issues requiring repair. I just read what others say about the car, and there are some folks who don't like the ECO mode. Ok, I can see what they're saying, BUT!, use the dang SPORT mode for cryin out loud, it solves the concerns. Other then that, this car is what others promise but don't deliver, blindspot detection, rear cross traffic warning ( saved my wallet when a neighbor ran, yes ran, toward the back of my car when I backed out of the driveway. manure for brains neighbor detection I call it), this and that, all for under 20K. And it handles well, drives great. And so far, it lasts. But, you need to use the 508 spec oil, which is expensive, and the usual car places do not use because they get it cheap in bulk. Because of the turbo and advanced engineering of this motor, VW/Audi has a special oil developed to carry the stress. You'd be well advised to have the oil changed at the dealer, and then check it that it has the green dye. It ain't cheap. The rest of the service intervals are typical VW, no worries, no fuss.

I am saddened to have to leave this review. I was so excited to lease my 2019 Jetta and now I truly wish I never had. I leased the Jetta in September of 2019. Since then, I have brought it back to the dealership to be worked on 5 times. I scheduled service three separate times for a check engine light (with one of those times including a window malfunction), once for the A/C not working properly and the most recent time being for the infotainment system’s audio and back up camera malfunctioning. This simply should not happen with a brand new car. When I noticed the A/C wasn’t working properly, I brought my frustrations about the car to the dealership and asked if they could someone get me out of my lease because I do not trust this car. I was told to reached out to VW’s customer service because the problem was “out of their control”. Through customer service, I requested a buyout which they quickly denied but would not give me a reason as to why they denied it. They did, however, tell me to reach out to them again if anything else went wrong and they would reevaluate it. Shortly after that exchange, the infotainment system faulted. I tried reaching out multiple times to the two representatives I had been speaking with previously and never got a response back. I am beyond frustrated at this point and feel completely ignored by VW customer service. The dealership has been kind, but not very helpful. They sold me a faulty car yet they keep handing it back to me saying “hopefully there won’t be another issue”. Now I am stuck paying full price for a vehicle that is unreliable for the rest of my lease. I could not be more disappointed in the lack of care and attention I have received from VW. As a result, I have resorted to writing this review in hopes of keeping others from having a similar experience. I do not recommend Volkswagen.

The cars looks nice, comfortable, big trunk space. The ride is smooth, it doesn't have the feeling or handling of a typical German car. Extremely unreliable, I started having issues after 3 days I purchased it. The car was delivered to me w/o a rubber break pad, dealer mistake almost got my in a crash at day 3. After one week with me Apple car play stopped playing. Dealer always pinned on my phone. I had to reach VW corporatet, have it six. It took about 4 months. I would feel some times like the car lost power, very odd.It will have close to zero power for a few seconds then go back to normal. After 11 months and about 23K miles of having it it had a major issue. Something about wiring the dealer said. All kind of alarms started going off in the car. Check engine light on all the time, the hand break would get activated while driving. Horrible experience, after the dealer fixed I went somewhere else and trade it in for a RAV 2007 with 110k miles on. Zero issues with my 'new' little old SUV for six months and about 7K miles. Lost 8k dollars on my Jetta adventure, I will never buy a VW again. If you are considering to buy a VW Jetta please do not do it. It has several recalls and it is a piece of garbage. By the way I heard all other new VW vehiv=cles have similar issues. Go buy yourself anything else.

Volkswagen has been in the market for many many years, ( MPG 43 80% highway 20% city ) heavy traffic I get 38 MPG. I bought the SEL trim level and it has a lot of standard features check Volkswagen website for all the available features. The 1.4 turbo engine 147 HP with 184 of torque is more than enough for the car size with 4 passengers, at the speed of 65 miles per hour the engine RPM is 1900 with air condition ON, the engine is quite. The car is solid on a Highway driving. Road noise is low. All German cars have stiff seats, they are not like the other cars that have more cushion but they are very comfortable even in long driving hours. The trunk is big enough to fit a lot of luggage. If you are in the market of buying a car I do recommend to test drive the Jetta, it is worth trying. There are 5 trim levels to choose from and the 6th. Trim the GLI is coming soon, so whatever is your budget the Volkswagen will find you the trim level that suits you best. The cold weather package is now available for an extra $450 ( remote start, heated rear seat, heated steering, heated windshield nozzles ). I will definitely buy Recommend Volkswagen to all buyers.

The economy of this car exceeds the ratings with only 500 miles on the clock. 30mpg in the city consistently and I hit 44.5 on a 500 mile trip including some Ozark hills. The quality can be felt the first time you lift the hood, German quality on a budget. You never have to go over 3k on the tack due to the incredible low-end torque this tiny engine has. Any articles you can find on the twin turbo (actually supercharged at low rpm then turbo - no lag at all) is well worth the read. The Beat audio system is known for sounding anemic at first listen but you will love it the first time your REALLY listen to it! It is subtle but has perfect sound that is way under rated by those who fail to really appreciate quality sound. When they say it is tuned by musicians, understand that they are comparing this system to studio sound systems that are lacking the added "tones" (rollover frequency choices) that many modern set-ups are adding. I traded a Touareg with only 2800 miles that was the best (quality and price) car I have ever owned but this Jetta gives me more joy. There is nothing I can say negative about this car - understanding that it is in the class that it is.. Civic no comparison, Jetta much better quality.. Kia? .. well .. it is a Kia again no comparison. This is really a poor mans BMW ( I have owned 2) and the only big difference is a light stiff ride vs a heavy stiff ride..

Just bought a 2019 Jetta S last week and been having a great time with the vehicle! I wanted a safe car that got great mpgs and it had to have a standard transmission because Im unsure about the 8 speed auto that is also offered. The 1.4 turbo has a very reasonable amount of zip thru the city and up on the highway as well! The comfort in the interior as well as all the gauges are well thought out. the ride is very smooth on the alloy 16 inch wheels and the mpgs are fantastic! Overall, I cannot think of anything I dont like about this great car! thanks to VW!!!!!

It feels and drives more expensive than it is. I am 6'1" and while I would agree that lumbar is lacking after about an hour of driving, overall it's a comfortable place to be. I have the base S 1.4T with 6spd manual, which is a lot of fun. 2019 was the year to get as 2020 models dropped the warranty from 72/72k to 48/48k.

I love this car. Performance is great. The car is very quick off the line and delivers smooth power up to highway speeds with minimal, very smooth engine noise. No need to turn up the volume on the highway. The suspension is smoother and more comfortable than the C-class Mercedes I had a few years ago. I find the seats comfortable even on long trips, unlike my Subaru Forester. I get about 38-42 MPG on mixed city and expressway driving on a typical day. Regular gas. The Beats stereo is excellent. The 8 inch screen is very easy to figure out and use on a daily basis. The price was good. I love this car.

I trade my Jeep grand Cherokee in for a 2019 R-line Jetta. I wanted better gas mileage because the Jeep was awesome but a gas guzzler. I have owned this car for close to 2 years now, it had 14k miles on it, no accidents and 2 previous owners. I have only had 2 issues with the car since I bought it, the back passenger side tire and sensors. The sensors were wacky because of the cold weather, and just needed a simple reset. And the tire had a slow leak, I hit a pothole so that was my fault lol. I used the warranty to get it fixed, and once everything was fixed there has been no issues since. I have leather seats that are white, so I put a premium leather seat covering over them to protect them as much as I can from wear and tear. The heated seats in the winter are lovely, but in the summer……. LOL don’t wear shorts. The car is comfortable, reliable, safety technology is very accurate, the gas mileage is great and overall meets my standards. This is the first compact car I have ever owned and I’m very happy with it :) ! I do wish it was AWD because it looses traction fairly easily.

great looking front end, back looks good but the front makes the car look wider and a more expensive car then it is. Ride is nice on 16 in rims which look great , pick up is great for a 1.4 T engine. was expecting it to be sluggish but very peppy. interior is a nice new design with the displays facing the driver slightly.comes with keyless go feature and rain sensor you would find on premium cars. seats are comfy. lacks power driver seat (at least tilt) and the stock speakers are not great. other than that a big upgrade from the last gen . (i own a 13 as well) panoramic sunroof is nice , android auto / apple car play , touch screen in dash, blind spot detection , traffic warning on cruise control . nice features for a car of that class.

Amazing R-Line Find!

Other manufacturer/models were considered, until the morning I found my '19 R-line advertised online for $15 grand. Yeah, no lie, the local dealer was going out of business and this was a steal. I'm tall (6'4") with long legs, the seating position is perfect without the need for an electric adjustment, tons of legroom. The size of the vehicle is perfect, easy to maneuver. Don't let the 147hp sway you, this is not a slow vehicle (use premium and you definitely get more power) and using the manual mode of the auto trans only makes it more fun to drive. It cruises effortlessly at 80-90 mph. The R-line has some nice standard features that include the blind spot alert and cross-traffic rear alert as well as AEB and they all work! The sunroof is nice as well. It has a stop-start feature that I thought would be bothersome but it is so seamless that you hardly note that the car has shut off or started (you can bypass if you want). The gas mileage is amazing, on a recent trip from SF to Palm Springs we averaged 44 mpg! The Apple Car Play works flawlessly. The only disappointment was the audio system. We also have a '17 GTI SE with the Fender audio system that is really nice. I opted to have just the speakers replaced in the Jetta with 4 Focal speakers, $600 installed and problem solved, very satisfied with the audio now using the factory audio head. This has turned out to be such a great buy I can't say enough about it. Plus it's nice-looking! Definitely recommend this vehicle. Update 11.2021 - I'm still in tune with everything that was posted initially. Now the husband has taken this over as his commute vehicle and we have racked up to 35K miles. Still has the original tires and brakes and both are in excellent condition, very surprising. Engine, exterior and interior are all holding up like new. Highly recommend this vehicle.

Great Car For The Money

We purchased the base sedan with approx. 15,000 miles on it at a good price. We now have 26,500 mi. on it. The longer we have it, the better we like it. From Chicago area, car has been to California & back. Very nice road car. On another 900+ mi. trip to Iowa we kept track of gas & miles ; averaged 40.2 MPG at 70 - 80 MPH. It gets a little twitchy above 95 MPH. Great car around town ; zippy performance getting away from stoplights & merging into traffic. We have two 305 HP Chevys ; I think the VW will keep up with them from 0 - 30 MPH. Front doors close with a "clunk" ; no tin can sound. We once had a Chevy Citation which we called "the tin can". VW has adequate knee room in rear seat & large trunk. We have a Buick & GMC Acadia in the family ; around town, we enjoy the Jetta more than either of those. If I were to buy new, for our Chicago weather, I would spend the extra money & get a Jetta with heated steering wheel & heated front seats. Back in the day, we had a 1963 VW Bug which I brought home from Germany. It was also a great car for the money ; sorry we traded it off.

This car gets 41 mpg on highway...really! 33 mpg combined. I love the turbo charged 1.4 liter - substantial power and transmission with 8 speeds, shifts smoothly, great handling and a very comfortable ride. Strong headlights light up the road, rarely needing to flash brights. Sel Sound system is impressive too, making long road trips more enjoyable, especially with SiriusXM. I'm glad I chose this model.

Great car but doors are cheaply made

Car has great mpg and great features and smooth ride , on the se and above models. Have a big problem with constant door dings thx to cheaply made soft doors, not like solid german doors of old. Another problem is the key fob not picking up you are near and opening the doors and trunk with keyless feature . I want to sell it because it easily pick up dings and dents and makes the car look older faster.

For a sub $20k vehicle, I really cannot complain. The ride quality is pretty good and the engine is actually quite peppy off of the line. I'm getting around 44-45 mpg on the highway, which is insane for a non hybrid. I've had a few issues with the front sensor malfunctioning and have had to take it in once for them to recalibrate. Ride quality is pretty good, road noise is relatively quiet for this class of car. My only complaints are the weird shifting at low speeds, the 'groaning' at around 30 mph (other jetta owners know what I'm talking about) and eco mode makes the car accelerate like a dog with a broken leg. Normal and 'sport' driving mode feels quite peppy though, it's actually quite surprising how well the car accelerates for a 1.4L (turbocharged) 4 banger.

I have 11,000 miles on this 2019 Jetta. Purchased in Nov. 2019. Engine leaked oil, tires go flat (cheaply made tires). Warning lights come on frequently. The rear warning thing doesn't work and that warning light stays on. Worst of all there is no Warranty on a brand new car! I will never buy another VW!

This is my 5th VW, 2 Passats and 3 Jetta’s. Then after owning several Mercedes-Benz vehicles I purchased my 2019 Jetta R-Line CPO and could not be happier. I always find value is the most important thing for me when I make a purchase. This car meets this attribute. The ride is incredibly more comfortable than the MB C250 Sport it replaced. The Jetta has very good passenger space and storage space. The 1.4 Turbo has great power and superior fuel economy using regular 87 octane fuel. The Jetta R-Line has the sporty look I like and makes me a safer driver. I cruise relaxed and comfortable with economy. The Jetta takes me back and forth to work and around my town delivering 40-47 mpg. I couldn't be happier in my CPO 2019 Jetta R-Line ($9,000 below MRSP for a new one). Plus, 7 yr/84000 mile factory bumper to bumper warranty. The car is less than 3000 lbs and not fun to drive in high winds.

Before I bought my 2019 jetta I did test drive other vehicles in the market and none came close to the Jetta’s design and comfort. The extra options like rear seat heat, steering wheel/front seat heater, leatherette and ((turbo)) was offered for thousands under other competitors. Therefore, i went ahead and bought a jetta, for a compact daily driver vehicle it is a great car. Exterior design is very conservative and it looks good. I personally would have stretched the front end just a little bit more but that’s me. I love a vehicle with a longer front end and I love the look of the wheel well to be farther away from the front door. That's just me…… I would bring back the side mirror-turn-signals but that’s all.Rear seat: are very comfortable the heated seat system is definitely useful for winter. One thing the rear seat is lacking is the air vents that are a must for hotter locations. My kids hate getting into my jetta because they don't get much air circulation unless you blast the air up to 100%. Having the climate system clowning air at 100% is very annoying it defeats the purpose of comfort. Air should flow quietly and be able to keep all passengers comfortable no matter where that person is sitting. Driver seat: this is by far the best comfort i had in awhile i am not skinny nor can i say im in great shape. With multiple deployments to the middle east my best friend is pain medication and when i drive my other vehicle i usually have to stop and stretch. I just recently drove 13 hours to a base and let me tell you I didn't complain at all. I enjoyed driving this vehicle, at no point during my trip did I have to stop and stretch. ((I drove 13 hours at 65mph)).Front passenger seat: same comfort as others. Infotainment: it is an amazing system very easy to navigate, it connects quickly as soon i enter the vehicle. Once in a while it will disconnect completely where i have to re enter the bluetooth PIN but no big deal. It is a great system but it should be 8 to 10 inches all around the models. The google drive should be updated; i rather be connected to bluetooth because the sound is better/louder and crispier, if connected by USB the sound is muffled. Sound meaning music from your phone or any other electronic device. The AUX input is highly recommended that should never be taken away from any vehicle. Sound: sound SUCKS it is flat, the speakers rattle on my vehicle mainly the passenger side speaker and i don’t even listen to music at a high level. Climate system: is another negative, we get temperatures of up to 119 on some days, and the AC system takes up to 10 minutes to cool. Weak AC. Steering wheel controls: love the flat bottom, controls are easy to use. Door panels: everything is where it should be, all auto-windows should be in all vehicles. I don't know why other manufacturers haven't made this a must. Acceleration: is really bad, too much lag which is a bad combination when trying to merge into traffic.Braking: no complaints about braking.Fuel/MPG: on my 13 hour trip at 65mph max i was left with a little less than a quarter tank when i arrived at my final destination. Turbo: The turbo is loud when I initially turn the vehicle on. It sounds like a lawn mower. It is very embarrassing, it sometimes kicks in quickly other times not so much. The U.S. is responsible for this because of all the restrictions we have.Interior sound dampening: this vehicle is very weird, sometimes it can be extremely quiet, other times i feel like driving a farm truck everything rattles. Keep in mind, all vehicle manufacturers are walking away from real leather, they use different types of plastic and materials that feel cheaper. For example i just drove a BMW 440 gran-coupe and i was a bit disappointed. But that’s how things are now unless you spend 100k on a vehicle you won’t see very good materials. My point is the 2019 Jetta has great material for the price tag, it just needs to be tighter so it doesn't rattle like a farm truck. So we covered the following need-improvement: acceleration lag; lawn-mower turbo; weak AC; crappy speakers; no AUX input; google drive update; no rear vents; side-mirror-turn signals;I honestly don’t have much complaint about it, the price was just right and it’s been a good car. Those items that i complain about might relate to you but then again it is on a car to car basis. Will I keep my 2019 Jetta? Probably not. Maybe i’ll lease an Audi unless it feels too much like a VW. I’m not quite sure what I will get next, but I've been looking for a small manual transmission Jeep ((not wrangler)). Keeping it simple.

I purchased this car in December 2018. The new Jetta is perfectly designed for my 100 mile round trip commute. The car is comfortable, quiet, and very economical. With the technology that comes with the SEL Premium, the car looks and feels like a much more expensive car. One (very minor) issue I have is with the vented seat option. It is hard to tell that it is on at all even with it at its highest setting. If you pay attention and feel around, you can kind of feel the air coming through the seat cushion but not the back at all. It’s a minor thing over all but an option I was looking forward to in the heat of the summer here in the Deep South.

When I purchased the vehicle with 11k miles on it, I heard the famous grinding noise while driving the car between 30-40mph. After 30k miles on the car, I've had numerous problems. Other than that. Oil pressure actuator sensor (?) Is faulty, illuminating the check engine light on my dash. Plastic hose that connects to the turbo blew apart, had to buy a new one. Oil doesn't last in this vehicle, after 10k miles I've noticed my car running EMPTY On oil. Volkswagen is claiming I can go 15k miles between changes. I call bullcrap. My last Volkswagen Passat 2015 was flawless, however with this car I've been nothing more than disappointed.

Love The Car - HATE The Seats

The 2019 Jetta is sleek and lovely to look at, with many electronic parts and accessories. It's a nice drive, quick and smooth for being so low to the ground. Its almost a delicate car but pretty inside and out. However, the seats are incredibly uncomfortable and according to the dealership, they can do nothing to fix the problem. I now understand the lack of comfort is a problem many people have with the 2019 Jetta. The seats are pitched upward and not adjustable because they are manual. You cannot change the pitch and if you have sciatica or any back problem, your vertebra are scrunched up because you sit lower than your knees. I love the car but hate to drive it.

My first jetta was a 2010 unlimited. I had it for 9 years with no real problems. I took great care of it and it took great care of me back. Fast forward to buying my new 2019 R-Line Jetta, it’s been in the shop 6 times since purchasing a year ago. 2 days ago the car would not let me brake. Out of nowhere while trying to park, the wheel and brakes locked. I almost couldn’t stop and rolled into oncoming traffic & pedestrians crossing the street. I am extremely scared to drive it. The dealership cannot “find anything wrong with it”. I’m never buying a jetta again, and neither should you. If you do want to buy one-buy a 2010 or older version. The new ones are unreliable and dangerous.
