Used 1996 Volkswagen Jetta Consumer Reviews
Ugh. This car. Nightmare.
So, on the whole this car should be put in one. Cheap quality: I've noticed many of you Jetta drivers are also missing your side moldings. in the last year: Towed 3 times, the coil blew, alternator went, timing chain broke, distributer broke, wires replaced twice, muffler fell off, trunk-lock mechinism broke off, breather tube cracked, O2 sensor replaced twice, oil sender unit cracked, paint is coming off, plastic knobs in the interior are coming off, strange burning smell coming from the rear wheels (mechanic can't figure it out). Not a great car. Poorly assembeled, cheap materials. The electrical system is jumpy. Bulbs often blow and get me pulled over.
Wife's Jetta
Bad paint that VW wouldn't take care of (we had to have repainted) - cassette player doesn't work - mysterious coolant leak - no pwr to cigarette lighter - 1 front and 1 rear speaker work (sometimes) - dash controls are not back lit. Eats tires! Wife bought the car new.
Economical and Fun to Drive...
I purchased this car with 32,000 miles on it and have since put on 40,000 miles of my own. I opted for the 2.0 instead of the vr6 and I haven't regretted it for a second. In the dealer's words, "you could drop a bomb on this engine and it would keep on running." I believe it! This little 4 banger has been very reliable and fun to drive. Although I can't outrun the new turbocharged 4 cylinders or the v6's of the world, the engineering behind the jetta gl 5 speed puts you in touch with the car. This car has the reliability you'd expect from Honda and the personality that only VW can offer!
Very Reliable
]My Jetta has been very reliable and has lasted through a beating. It comes with a good warranty if things happen to go wrong. It could use more power, but is sufficent for everyday driving.
I'll never buy a VW ever again!
Bought it brand new in 96, problems started almost right away w/ the moonroof (luckily, it's still under the 2-yr bumper to bumper warranty). In 5 yrs I owned the car & less than 40k mileage (not to mention that the car was serviced regularly), 3 out of 4 power windows were broken, continuous AC problems (mechanic couldn't figure it out), poor gas mileage & the latest, had smoke coming out from the steering wheel (again, mechanic couldn't find out what's wrong). Trade it w/ Toyota Corolla & couldn't be happier. Stay away from VW!!
