My GTI Review
My GTI has been a blast to drive everyday for almost 2 years now. The 1.8t engine is the same one you'll find on the Audi TT, A4, and A3. I don't think most people realize that. It has a lot of low end torque and high end hp. With an aftermarket chipping program, you will have a 210hp 240tq mini monster. The handling isn't too bad, but with a aftermarket suspension, the handling performance is greatly improved.
The GTI
I really enjoy this car. It's got good power, it looks good. The hatchback gives some extra space. The moonroof is cool. My problem with the car thus far, has nothing to do with the car but the manufacturer. It seems that all repairs on my car when they become necessary will have to be done at the dealer. An overpriced dealer, where at this point, I've been unsatisfied with their lack of professionalism and lazy service. With all of that said, once again, I love the car, and would consider buying another GTI/Golf in the future if the rectify some of their buisness practices.
Great car, learn to do your own repairs
Good little car, decent power for its age and I can get 32mpg on highway road trips. You must know how to repair vehicles or you will spend lots of money for someone else too. Parts are not that expensive if you get them from a reputable online vendor and are usually pretty easy to fix just time consuming. Interior is designed well and has held up alright throughout the years. Handles OK for having a beam rear end. The vr6 is a stout engine but you will spend some money on timing chain parts and coolant pieces depending on age. Manual transmission and original clutch still feel good at 175k. Plenty of room in the hatch but backseats are pretty cramped for any long drives, haul my kayak on the roof frequently. Rust proofing is very good with the exception of the front fenders, these usually rust out on northern mkiv cars. Besides rock chips on front and some minor scratches from scuffs/bumps the paint still shines up nice. If you've got a decent toolset and mechanical knowledge you could easily drive one of these 250k+.

Never Again . . .
This car has been plagued with problems, regardless of the fact that I bought it new. Where do I start? 1)Rain sensor was broken, which required a new windshield. 2)Rear-view mirror came detached twice. 3)Check engine light came on twice. 4) Passenger window fell in. 5)Air conditioning motor stopped working. 6) Alarm system malfunctioned. I take excellent care of this car, yet Volkswagen has let me down repeatedly. I will never again purchase a Volkswagen, and I am cautioning everyone I know to stay away from them.
3rd VW
This is my 3rd VW that I have owned and it is the best. I also own a Lexus and a Acura so I think I have a good comparison in the quality department. I had looked at BMW but for the price this GTI is better, even than most cars at 50% higher price maybe even double the price. Quality is online with Acura but not as good as my Lexus. The ride is very comfortable. I am very happy with the car
fun, but is it reliable???
i think for $25,000 thisis the car to get if you looking for somthing good looking inside and out. Lot of fun to drive since you get a lot from it s v6 engine combined with the very luxurious looks inside. Yet it's kryptonite is the reliability. Since i bought it i hadit more in service garage than in mine.
