Great car, hindered by high price and defective cloth on seats
I really want to like this car. It has great mpg, seems to perform OK, however what's killing my endorsement is the vehicles seats and fabric. The seats are highly bolstered sport seats, which is fine, but the waffle-like texture of the cloth has proven to be defective. I have severe fraying and premature wear on the side bolster on the driver's seat as well as the seat back. VW is supposedly ordering me new seat covers and will install at the 10k service. Posts all over the Internet indicate that this is a pretty universal problem with all 2010 and 2011 Golfs. This fabric is a nightmare.
Great design; hopefully reliable too
It's a delight to drive this vehicle. Nimble yet smooth and quiet (on par with our '07 BMW 3-series except accel). Very comfortable and beautiful cabin. Not quite as sporty as our MINI Cooper S, but much more pleasant. We also tested Accord, Fit, Fusion, Jetta, Impreza. Each has merits but can't equal Golf's nimbleness, road manners, cabin quality. Gorgeous cloth seats nicer than Jetta's leatherette. Turbo lag starting from stop. Electric steering maybe a hair less responsive than '09 Golf? Neither bothersome, tho. Unlike reports from years past, a/c easily tamed 99-degree heat. It's day 2 so can't report reliability (fingers crossed) and fuel economy. Confident about resale value, tho.

one of the best
Sold the lexus, kept the golf. Smoother, better on bumps, much better on highway, handling is vastly superior, reliability is equal or better (that's been our experience). Es 350 is slightly quieter, but the handling and ride are demonstrably inferior. Update: 60k later. No problems. 2010 golf (gas) still running as new. And it has not been babied. Far from it.

Wowser!!
We picked up a '11 tdi with 65k on it. This is one of the recall cars that's had the update. We paid 11k for it and are very happy with it. The crisp handling makes you want to search for all the curvy roads around. The low end torque from the turbo 2.0 litre makes me smile every time I push on the go pedal. We've had the car for 6 months and put around 13k on it. Combined fuel mileage is 42.8 mpg. Set the cruise at 65 on the highway and it gets 52+ mpg. The reason I docked it a star is because the dealership had some touch up paint work done on it that is poor quality. I own a body shop so it's not a big issue but wish it would have been done properly in the first place. So I'd say if you are looking for a fun reliable car, this will be a great choice. This is the 6 speed manual. I'm planning on getting another with the automatic that s how much fun they are. Build quality is excellent, interior is very comfortable with nice materials.
hot hatchback fun, very well put together car!
I sold off my 2005 Prius due to excessive road noise and it being the most boring car ever in the world to drive. What to get instead? I had rented a TDI Golf in Italy early in Dec 2010 and absolutely loved it's performance on the autostrada. By end of Dec I had found my Golf 4dr auto TDI with all the right options. Drove it from Phoenix dealer to our San Jose home, 13 hours straight. Never had so much fun driving. The Golf is smooth at 100mph as it is at 55mph. The seats are comfy with lots of lateral support. The stereo with six months of free Sirius kept us company on the I40. The diesel engine's torque and DSG tranny couple nicely at all speeds, city or highway. Torque is plenty!
