Derek,12/19/2020
So I've had this SUV for just over 2 years and I live in the northeast. Previously have owned, BMW's, Toyota's, Subaru's, Acura's, Honda's, and wanted a change. Have 15 years + driving experience.
First and foremost, the bad.
The start-stop is rubbish, don't use it. It's very jerky and not a nice feeling.
The mileage if you're doing a ton of city bumper-to-bumper driving or if you have a very heavy foot is below 20mpg.
If you have guests or children over 5'7, long haul drives aren't ideal. Doable but far from a day at the spa. Space for 3 adults in the back yes but not if they're all very heavy set. It's not as tiny as say... a previous-generation 3- Series back seat but also not a full-size sedan worth of space.
Slightly louder than I would like in the cabin.
The mixed bag of tricks you get used to fairly quickly.
I've grown used to the big C-pillar blind spot, it's not bad to deal with if you position your side mirrors and turn your head to check the blind spot like a normal person. Don't be lazy. Car otherwise as great visibility.
The trunk space cover does not roll and retract, it doesn't fold or bend. Can be stored under the trunk floor. I just leave it up and in place all the time for security and peace of mind that no one can look into my trunk.
The shifter is digital, does not physically slide or shift. Takes about an hour of getting used to and then I was fine. May be different for you. After 2 years I don't even think about it any more.
Navigation isn't great, more complicated than it needs to be, and has a slight learning curve.
Brakes take a bit of getting used to, they have an early biting point though they are progressive and confidence-inspiring.
The good, and there is a lot of it.
Design, design, design. Everything is super well thought out, from the little trash bin to the variety of hooks that are for small items in the trunk and passenger areas.
Having the navigation map with directions in the dash is life changing.
The upgraded Harmon Kardon unit is great, really expansive soundstage and customizable sound. Better than similar Harmon Kardon units in other manufacturer vehicles.
Car can pull itself in and out of a parking spot, very neat feature though I don't use it often. Only when I have to park in a tiny tiny spot in the city.
360 camera works great and helps with parking. Car is easy to park.
One thing I love is that I can adjust the temperature, fan speed, seat heat, steering wheel heat, front and rear defroster, and recirculate the air with just voice commands. This reduces distractions while I drive.
Materials are upscale and long-lasting after 2 years of abuse. Piano black plastic is regrettable but not a dealbreaker. Everything that you touch in the car is pleasant, even the trunk cover. It's not a silk pillowcase but it's not sandpaper either. Everything you touch is generally soft touch, even in the backseat. Similar or better than BMW. Better than Subaru for sure.
Seats are well-bolstered even for a skinny guy so I'm not sliding around. Seats are certainly adjustable and comfortable over long 3+ hour trips. Alcantara also great but keep a vaccum handy if you plan to eat in the car. The front door bins are positively massive, the rear passengers are just okay.
Driving this car in traffic is a breeze. Set it up to the speed and distance you want and just let it drive itself. Tap the button or gas to go forward, give the wheel the occasional jiggle and you're good. Very easy. Better than Toyota, similar to Subaru.
Impressive crash prevention system. Knows before you do if there are issues on the road ahead of you. Has literally saved my life and helped to prevent fender benders. I don't care how good a driver you are, there are still things you can't see or be aware of with some of the crazies on the road these days. Another set of eyes helps a lot. No issues with the system. Similar to Subaru's.
Power and braking are good. Has several driving modes that do feel different and ECO is the best for in traffic driving. No problems merging into traffic or coming to a stop from highway speeds.
Steering is precise though not very communicative. No fears that the vehicle will roll over at all even cornering hard into a turn. I also rely on my own driving sense to know where the car is and how it's behaving. Corners better than most SUV's and family sedans.
Winter weather performance, even on the supplied 20-inch All-Season tires is excellent. I very rarely ever worry about the car in the rain and it's very predictable in the snow. Can easily pull itself out of a snowy parking spot after a storm with 12+ inches of snow on the ground no problem. Very easy to do donuts, very enjoyable. Similar or better than Subaru.
Hasn't seen a service center besides recommended service intervals.
This car is very specific, It's not for everyone. Luxurious, modern, well designed, eye-catching. Will age very well.
You'll get plenty of compliments.
