Used 2008 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Consumer Reviews
Dead engine at 146K miles
I own an 08 Tundra SR5 Double Cab with a mere 146,000 miles on it. I've babied it every step along the way, with all scheduled maintenance. Loved the truck at first, but have had to replace the starter, not once but twice already (at $1000 a pop I might add, because Toyota decided to put the starter inside the intake manifold, which translates to a very labor-intensive job. Hence the $1000 per repair.) But the real dagger in the heart just happened at 146k miles. The timing chain jumped a tooth out of nowhere and in doing so damaged valves and pistons to the point that it now requires an entirely new engine. I was quoted a price of $10,000-$12000 by several reputable shops. The darn truck is (was) only worth around $9000 on a trade! I spoke with a Toyota rep and of course they are unwilling to do anything to help with the repair. No surprise there. So if I choose not to put a new engine in it, it's worth maybe $2000 as is. If I put a new engine in it, I will have paid thousands more for the repair (plus the 2 starters at $2000) than the thing is even worth. Everyone I spoke to is dumbfounded that this happened with just 146k miles in it. I have zero confidence in this truck (and in Toyota in general) moving forward. They've lost me as a customer for the remainder of my lifetime.

Sport Coupe Pickup
Small V8 performance and with it's five passenger, hard top coupe styling, "cozy", intimate, and, very comfortable, four adult pass interior, coupled with decent gas mileage... makes it the perfect choice for a single "empty nester" like myself. The 21.5 MPG Hwy, is the "frosting on the cake", pretty amazing for a vehicle this size. The 60-40 split, flip up rear seat with under seat storage holds all my camping gear or whatever, securely locked. Plus, I can tow up to 5000lbs if I want... Great Truck!... Looks great, I get lots of compliments. Mine is White with Graphite, Bucket seats with Console... My traveling office.

loud noise at start up
i just bought 2008 tundra 5.7 with 164000 when i start makes loud rattling noise for about 3 seconds then stops. After started if i listen close i can here what i think are the lifters making slight noise. My mechanic did not listen to it but when i told him he said i will need to replace motor soon that because who ever owned it before me didn't change oil enough clogged up timing chain, said it could lock up engine in a week or 2 years, and told me to purchase a 36 mo. engine replacement warrantee with him since i have 30 days to get one. all the forums I've been too says this is common to 5.7 and toyota knows it. I guess i am ok with noise just do not want motor blow mechanic says it could cost up 13k to replace

Like the truck but has problems
First Toyota truck I have ever owned. And probably last! I use it to pull my horse trailer and it does that well. But so did my Chevrolet and the Chevy would hold an alignment. Tundra wont. Had 4 alignments done in less than 2 years. Still wearing tires out way to soon. Dealer blames it on bad roads. Chevy was able to hold up to roads. Thought Toyota was supposed to be built better. Also, radio turned off and on by itself. Got it replaced, but lite still goes off and on. Really disappointed dealer cant fix alignment problem. Even took it to another tire place. Thought problem was fixed. After 3000 miles, tires are cupping again already and can feel it pulling. Ridiculous!
Fragile, very fragile.
First the good news, this truck with the 5.7L engine gets very good MPG, hwy 21, city 15 unloaded. Unfortunately, thats where the good news ends, I purchased this truck to tow my 5800 lbs travel trailer to and from the NC Mountains during the spring, summer and falls months, I got the 5.7L, SR5, extended cab with the tow package. On our first trip to Boon, NC we experienced the well documented reverberation and bouncing that comes with just the slightest change in road conditions ..and we only traveled the interstates and four lane highways. The second thing we noticed and it also is well documented in this forum, it the shifting between 5th and 6th gear on straight road. It dents easily.
