I love it!

I purchased this vehicle under the Clunkers Program while "donating" my Ford F-150 to the government for destruction. The mpg is great with new four cylinder engine. EPA figures are either on the money or slightly low. Plenty of pep too. Very quiet even at highway speeds. Great looking interior. The V6 would have been nice, but absolutely not necessary unless you're carrying six or towing a boat. Same goes for AWD here in Florida, but in snow country I would have added AWD. This could be a more ideal car for seniors as it is easy to drive and easy to get in and out of. The swing out trunk lid is easier for seniors than the hatch. Same for getting things out of the back. No stooping.

RAV4 10 years later

Drove it off the lot new in 2009, have right at 150,000 miles on it now, only repair work done has been routine maintenance like brake shoes, batteries etc. engine is still strong and uses no oil. From the very beginning it’s been a rocket. The 269 hp, 3.5 liter V6 is the best motor Toyota ever made. It’s hauled loads of boys to paintball tournaments and girls on travel softball trips. I feel like I could drive anywhere in the country right now in it with no problem. It’s easy to get in and out of with great visibility all around. It handles more like a sedan in traffic than an SUV with almost ridiculous acceleration. Every once in a while everything comes together right and you achieve perfection. The 2007-2012 RAV4 with the V6 is one of the best all around, multipurpose family automobiles ever made. It was a sad day when Toyota dropped the V6 option. Currently looking for a 2012 with low mileage before they’re gone. If there is any downside it’s road noise and a budget radio. Toyota would have been well served putting in a little more noise dampening material but that’s a minor thing overall. I thought the interior looked cheap at first but after 10 years it looks just the same.

Spongy brakes

I have been driving it for 5 months now. It is reliable so far. The I4 has enough power to get into hwy and passes. The folding backseat flat the trunk and accept large stuff. It average local 23 and highway 26 MPG. One thing that alerts me is it has spongy brake and can be very low when press it (about 1" from the floor). It takes too long to actually feel brake taking effect. A large foot may actually touch the gas padel unintentionally. It brakes fine though. Checked with the dealer service and was told "this is by design and it is normal." Thinking about the gas padel recall and then adding this spongy brake, the feeling is not very comforting. Generally it is a good car.

Trans axle noise 35 mph to 55 mph

Vehicle did not make transaxle noise when purchased! After 1500 miles it started a howling noise at light throttle, 35-55 mph it is getting worse, Toyota Tech is supposed to be checking on the reason for it, it has been 21 days and I have heard nothing, I am very dissatisfied with this car! I was told there was a production change, I think I got one of the bad ones. The service dept. replaced an axle at about 5 thousand miles and the axle bearing, but this did not correct the noise I am hearing.

I am completely in love with my RAV4

The 2009 Toyota RAV4 had me on my first test drive. It drives like a dream and is incredibly safe- honestly I love long road trips now because I am so happy inside this car. I’ve been in several wrecks with it; I’ve never been injured at all, even with massive damage to the exterior of the car. The maintenance is minimal and inexpensive. For a smaller SUV, it has incredible storage space and the back door that swings open like a door is actually very convenient. Soundsystem and AC/heat are also fantastic. I am truly obsessed with this car, and will buy another RAV4 when (and if!) this one dies. A decade later she’s not showing any signs of slowing down, though. The claims that it’s not comfortable to sit in were written by folks who don’t know how to adjust the settings. The seat moves forwards backwards up and down, and so does the steering wheel. I am very small and I fit perfectly, and my male friends over 6 feet often drive the vehicle and are totally comfortable. One time I pushed a pizza drivers BMW out of a ditch using my RAV. it didn’t leave a mark. Had to get new brake pads at 130000 miles, we live in the mountains so this was expected.
