Cool but poorly made

Before you buy this car I’d check it out. We’ve had several issues with this car since we’ve had from the start with manufacturing issues and poor customer support. The Y was delivered with uneven side mirrors, a door handle that is sunk in on the passenger side, plastic imperfections on the steering wheel, defective rear seats that were replaced and now rattles at every bump. All issues that Tesla will not repair or look at without an upfront charge or take responsibility to fix. The roof developed a long crack that the dealership said was caused by a rock, but there was no exterior chip. The forums report stress cracks on the roof window as a cause, but the cost was $1600 to replace. The creaks and sounds when drive are loud, the windows feel loose when they open and close and do not seal well. Overall we won’t buy another Tesla based on our experience, but we are happy they are making a fun electric car.

I was super worried about buying the Y because I heard about all of the issues with early production including panel gaps and misalignments. Happy to say I only had one issue upon delivery: the windshield wipers weren’t connected to the fluid reservoir. I was able to fix it myself and have had the car for 5000 miles and 3 months without any other problems. I’m about to go on a 4000 mile road trip and am super excited to have autopilot and the supercharger network. I considered renting a car so I didn’t put the miles on my new car, but I don’t want to drive anything else! Tesla recently added the acceleration boost to the LR model which gives it a noticeable speed improvement from a stop. You can hear the front motor turn on at lower speeds now if you really press the pedal down. What other car let’s you upgrade it in 10 seconds? It feels like I’m driving the performance model now. I was worried about the range but it’s really not been an issue for me. I usually only charge the car to 80 or 90% then don’t plug it in again until it gets below 30%. Sometimes it will be over a week before I need to charge it. I have an old dryer outlet I can use to charge it and park my car outside, no garage. An extension cord from the outlet let’s me charge easily. I thought this would take some adjusting but the more I do it the harder it will be to ever drive a gas car again. It’s really a lot easier than going to a gas station since you just plug it in and leave it over night. Also the supercharging is so quick in this car, and it’s awesome you can just pull in and stick the supercharger in without having to pull out a credit card or anything. Overall, I am very happy with the Model Y. The sales process wasn’t the best, but I definitely preferred it to a normal car buying experience. I think part of this is manufacturing delays and hopefully as they scale this should see some improvement in delivery times. I had about 7 delivery days scheduled at my service center, but they kept cancelling them because the car hadn’t arrived yet. Also I would second what others have said about feeling the road. The car has tight/sporty suspension and low profile tires, so don’t expect a cushy ride. This comes in handy on the highway and nice roads where you can really push the car.. the acceleration boost pushes you back in your seat and gives you that rollercoaster feeling in your stomach. But if the road is bad quality the car will let you know. I didn’t notice as much because my previous car was the same way, but now I just enjoy maneuvering around the holes. I’ve definitely ran over some questionable spots in the road already, and haven’t had any issues with the tires (20’ inductions) Overall, if you’re ready to make the switch to electric and you want something bigger than the Model 3 but don’t want to pay the premium for an S or X, the Y is for you.

Truly awful ride quality that overshadows it all.

Initial review Jan 2021 -- 2 stars I returned an 2018 Audi Sportback when it's lease ended and got the Tesla Model Y. My other car is a 2020 Volvo XC90. So that's the context of my review, and those are the benchmarks I'm comparing this to. Model Y has awful ride quality, one of the worst cars in terms of ride I've ever had. In the NYC area with the bad roads the ride is truly horrendous. Every bone in your body will know the slightest bump or imperfection on the road. I'm now driving with 5 psi less tire pressure than recommended to offset the bumpy ride, but its still pretty bad. Steering is vague and a total let down at high speeds, it doesn't inspire a lot of confidence at high speeds which this car will get to fairly quickly. Interior quality is on par with a $25k modern car these days, not comparable to $50k-$75k cars. If you are used to luxury brands and driving sports cars this is going to be a total let down, apart from the acceleration. Okay, not all is bad, power is awesome but tapers of quickly after the initial spurt. Technology is mostly good, but a lot of it is gimmicky. Sound system is also good compared to standard speakers, but compared to the upgraded speakers in luxury vehicles this is subpar. I wish there was an option to upgrade to a higher quality system. Seats are generally comfortable and supportive but they feel cheap and are cheap (it's polyurethane i.e. plastic). Don't be fooled by this "vegan leather" marketing lingo. Range is decent and in real world you'll get around 250 miles on a full charge. I regret buying it and my spouse says it makes her nauseous and she just doesn't drive it anymore. Fit and finish, paint quality, panel gaps etc. leaves a lot to be desired and is a well known problem, so I'm not even going to complain about it. There's a lot of space for all your stuff and plenty of legroom and headroom. Autopilot is okay but is basically useless without FSD as it won't change lanes and will deactivate the auto steering and make a loud alert noise. The pilot assist in Volvo is not this advanced but at least it will not deactivate auto steer when you change the lanes. I find that more useful. If you just want to follow a car in a lane then this works, but so do every other adaptive cruise control with stop and go that comes standard in basically every car nowadays. This is an honest review after owning it for 3 months now. Read the review in MotorTrend, in which they said the ride quality of this car is worse than pickup trucks. Amen. I didn't test drive and it's my fault, was trigger happy sitting home during Covid-19. I also happen to read the MotorTrend review after buying this car. Update Sep 2021 after 11 months of ownership - dropped the rating to 1 star ------ The ride is just unbearable. Recently we rented a Kia while on vacation abroad, a cheap compact car, which had better ride than this. The car now has lot of rattles and noises coming from headliner, back seats, seat belts etc. Auto pilot is unreliable as anything. I really can't understand why people call it great and advanced. Without FSD its useless, unless you want to follow a car in a single lane without changing it till your destination. Full range has now dropped to 306 from the 326 originally. Also you rarely get more than 225-250 in a single charge, unless you baby it. Handling is so poor and almost dangerous at higher speeds. Sound system and technology is saving grace in otherwise a poorly made half baked product with a lot of fandom.

Reg: 2020 Tesla Model Y (aka Model Yugo) vin: 5YJYGDEE2LF009***. I have not previously inclined to blog about anything, but the negative experience due to the purchase of our 2020 Tesla Model Y (aka model Yugo) has inclined me to post the problems that we paid $60,000 for. As I have stated in other posts, there is a certain cool factor that goes with purchasing and driving a Tesla. There are definitely many cool features. If you are a young driver that is impressed by features that Tesla has and can see past the many imperfections and problems, then this car is for you. If you are an older middle aged person looking for a safe family car, I would not recommend rushing to your local Tesla showroom. First, my personal opinion about the car is that it is definitely not a luxury car. It does not ride like a Cadillac or Mercedes or similar car. The turning radius is non-existent. Not to take anything away from Toyota or Honda but it rides like a Camry or Accord, both cars I definitely like; the Camry or Accord just don’t cost $60,000. Don’t expect a luxury car ride. The service at Tesla definitely leaves a to to be desired. This was the first full EV that my wife and I purchased. When we took delivery of the vehicle, it was waiting for us in a parking lot. We were instructed to sign into our phone app and just drive away. There was no one to show us any features or explain anything about the vehicle, just a car parked in a parking lot and a phone app. We were instructed to view a series of YouTube videos if we had any questions about anything. Again, the app is where you communicate with Tesla about any service issues; no managers or service office to complain to if things go wrong or if something needs to be escalated. Just an app conversation with a technician. Office depot has far better service. If I purchase the wrong ink cartridge, there is more attention by Office depot than Tesla toward any problems. Once you schedule an appointment on the app, you can expect the appointment to be moved at least twice. Totally at Tesla’s discretion. So don’t rush to your boss’ desk to ask for time off until Tesla has decided when they have time to get to your service issues. This can change up to the day that your service is scheduled. Your life is entirely in their hands and don’t expect a loaner vehicle, rather they will offer you an UBER ride back home. Again, this lack luster service might be ok with a very young person, but anyone with kids or a busy career, this is very inconvenient. Who needs to spend $60,000 on a vehicle, only to spend the next three months or so juggling service appointments. Since we have had so many issues with our brand new 2020 Tesala, I thought a lot about how to share them all on this blog. My wife and I have a collection of videos and photos cataloging all of the issues. I am planning to publish a web site sometime in the future with all pictures and videos available. I do have my personal theory about why the Model Y has had so many issues. Three weeks after we took delivery of our Tesla, the company lowered the price by $3,000. I believe that Tesla wanted to push out as many vehicles prior to reducing the price. I believe that this caused the Model Y to be built in a hurry and with many issues. Below is a list of all the items that my wife and I have had to deal with so far with our new Tesla. 1. Wires hanging from underneath the vehicle 2. Roof glass was not installed correctly, allowing air and water to enter the vehicle. The glass had to be adjusted. 3. The charge port door was broken, had to be replaced. 4. Multiple exterior panels including fenders and hood needed adjusting. The car had uneven gaps on most of the panels. Most of the on the passenger side. 5. Door glass had to be adjusted, also allowing water and air to enter the vehile. 6. There is a crinkle in the center of the cars hood. My wife and I had decided to live with this, since there are so many other serious issued to resolve. 7. A very important and dangerous issue with the car was the screen. The screen was shutting off while driving on the highway and was freezing at random times. We stopped to check the mail and the screen stated that we were traveling 37 miles per hour. Without the scree, there is no way of knowing how fast the vehicles is going or what gear the vehicles is in. The screen controls everything. 8. The air conditioner randomly blew at high and would then shut off on its own. 9. After one of the service appointments the left blinker decided to stop working, leaving us without a blinker until the next appointment. 10. Several tools were left in the vehicle following a service call. 11. Lose bolts were found by the technician at one of our appointments. 12. One tail light and two front facing lights allow water to enter, leaving fog after a rain or car wash. 13. Automatic windshield wipers will not shut off for two days flowing a rain. Many more...

Not sure why people call it luxury car. The built is frail, the road noise is annoying. I miss my C-300. For now I am keeping it because there is no choice (yet) for good EV and with Tesla you can have fun with the technology, if that what you want. If you want a nice comfortable luxury car look elsewhere. The FSD software is overrated, it is useful, stop signs recognition is cool, but WILL NOT be full self driving anytime soon. There are too many edge cases in driving. They do have to go beyond computer vision. One other thing I realized if you are buying EV for daily commute and are not planning to use this car for long range travel, you have more option. I have not driven the car more than 50 miles in a day, with daily charging there was no issues, even if the battery was 150 or 200 mile range. Think about how many times in a year you will use this car for long range travel, and if you really need long range battery.
