Almost a year: still looking for excuses to drive

I haven't had this much fun in a car since I was 17. The driver assistance is the best. Over the air updates keeps the car current. Many other pluses cited by others. The downsides: not great for long hauls if you will mind stopping periodically for charging. Too few Tesla Service Centers. Poor availability of parts for repairs. Nevertheless, I would not want to own any other car.

After six and half years of ownership, I still believe this is by far the most excellent vehicle I have ever driven. There is still no other vehicle on the market than can be compared to a Tesla. The car is very fast and more advanced. Although other brands are now getting better. Additionally, its the only electric vehicle that you can easily drive across the country because of Tesla's supercharger network along most major freeways and the car's internal system of navigation directing you on your route. When on I-95, I always feel safer using the auto pilot. Although this is not full self driving, I feel its a good partnership between my driving skills and the computers ability to see 360 degrees. It really helps relieve stress when driving in congested traffic. I also prefer having all my controls together on the well organized large tablet screen. This is an excellent car and I highly recommend it!

I have driven BMW’s for 26 years. Never had a car this responsive and fun to drive. Feels tight on the road and extremely quiet. Great sound system and outside noise suppression. As spacious and comfortable as my old 540.

We continue to be amazed how much we still love driving our 2 Performance Model 3s (2018 not 2019!). It just doesn't get old. And the cars simply continue to get better with virtually each firmware update. The cost of ownership is staggeringly low because we were the last to get free unlimited supercharging, and we also have solar panels in Florida. We basically don't pay energy costs as a result. We understand we are outliers on that, but it's a pretty sweet deal to basically plug your cars into a solar system. Few pieces of technology give you as good a feeling as plugging your car into the sunshine. While almost nobody buying a sports sedan looks closely at safety data, the Tesla Model 3 is the second safest car in the world, both from an active and passive safety standpoint (very slightly behind the newer Model Y In recent crash test data). It was the first car to win outright every crash test category, showing a significantly lower risk of injury in a potential crash than any other vehicle. If one equally weights performance, safety, and efficiency/ecology, it might be a candidate for “best sedan in the world.” If these collective virtues were not enough, lowered and with wider wheels and tires, the car looks like the car Ferrari would have made, if it made electric four-door sedans – but of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. While clearly all technologies are about intrinsic trade-offs, the Model 3 strikes a stunning balance, in which very little is compromised, and much is optimized. Neither my wife (who is no version of a car enthusiast) nor I could ever go back to an ICE vehicle, regardless of how expensive or well made. These cars are simply a revelation to own and drive. If you haven't experienced one, you truly have no benchmark for them. Both M3Ps have also been exceptionally reliable. We've had a few minor service issues, almost all under warranty but we just had our first out of warranty repair ($83 to fix a window switch and a stuck console hinge). Despite the frequency of complaints online about Tesla Service we have had nothing but great service by highly competent technicians. PROS/BENEFITS: 1) An amazing dynamic envelope of performance, handling, braking, with a pretty decent ride – a fantastic driver’s car, easily the equal of any sports sedan extant in overall dynamics. The car is just uncanny in its overall responsiveness and linearity, especially in terms of response to the accelerator, but handling is also highly predictable with excellent feedback. For tweakers and upgrade junkies, tons of stuff is readily available from outfits like Mountain Pass Performance. Both cars have benefited from the MPP parts bin, including most especially their amazing coilover kits. 2) Equally impressive energy efficiency and, with free supercharger use (sadly no longer available), way lower cost of ownership/daily operating expense – but even without free supercharging, much cheaper to own and operate. We estimate our cost of operation (not total cost of ownership) is about 5-6 cents a mile (tires, occasional alignment, brake flushing, and that's it!), not counting depreciation, excise taxes and insurance but just pure cost of operation year to year. 3) Unlike ICE vehicles, the slower you go and the more around town driving you do, the better your ‘gas’ mileage. Driving conservatively around town, you can get under 200 whr/mi, which translates to over 165 MPGe. Even on the highway, at current excessive highways speeds, we get greater than 100 MPGe (<335 whrs/mi). 4) Comfortable, spacious feeling interior, with exceptionally good front seats, (a glass moonroof adds to the spacious feel), with a strong ‘minimalist’ theme. 5) Better space utilization than anything in its as a direct benefit of its electric skateboard architecture, with two trunks, including a useful front one, a ‘frunk’. 6) Will charge fully overnight from any house current 240 volt line, and one of Tesla’s V3 Supercharging stations can get you 100 miles of range in 6 minutes, 175 miles in 10-12 minutes, and 90% charged in 25 minutes from 15%. 7) Low cost of ownership and daily operation, due to our lifetime supercharging benefit, plus federal and state tax credits. Its lower operating expenses and maintenance costs save at least ~$15k over a 10 yr ownership period, more if you drive more than 12K miles/yr. 8) Significantly future-proofed via updates to core system software, with easy updates over Wi-Fi. Right now it's the only car you can buy that is guaranteed to get better over time. At 4.5+ yrs old, it's now a way better car than when new. 9) Very well integrated operating system run through touchscreen control. Menus are compact, well-organized, easy-to-understand, and don’t have too much depth, but not everybody’s going to like running all the car’s systems from the touchscreen. But after having some brief initial concerns about it, we've accommodated to it easily. 10) Best autopilot and cruise control available. The navigation system is also clearly the best in the industry. Lots of FUD in the Press about Autopilot. Far from perfect but it's still a godsend on long drives. Just have to watch out for that phantom braking, which is much improved, but still there. 11) Massive convenience of controlling, starting & locking/unlocking your car without interacting w/ keys/key fobs, via smartphone encrypted Bluetooth connection. CONS: 1) Range anxiety, and as the car ages there is 'range loss' anxiety as well, associated with battery degradation. In 5 years we've lost 10% but it's nonlinear. Range loss has slowed significantly over the last 2 years. Our range losses are a little higher than average simply because we did not understand calendar aging and the need to keep batteries state of charge low in warm weather. Lesson learned. 2) i Interior materials not commensurate with price of vehicle. 3) Back seat is too low – such that sit with your knees up. This was likely done to increase rear headroom. 4) Significant range loss in Winter as many have commented on but we basically don't deal with that since we don't have winter anymore. 5) In their stock form, the cars were simply way too noisy on the highway as many have commented on, all from wind and tire noise. We have been able to quiet them with extra door seals and other aftermarket noise reduction. Still this should have been taken care of at the factory and design level. New cars are quieter. 6) Elon's drama and polarizing and political approach sometimes detracts from his, Tesla's and the car's, collective genius. Shame that no one seems to be able to set limits on Elon.

Nearly perfect and effortless to drive

2019 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus 4dr Sedan (electric DD)

I have had the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus RWD with the partial premium interior for over a year now and it is phenomenal overall. Not a single thing wrong with it so far; in fact, it has received software upgrades over the air and has improved - without added cost! For example, now I can use voice commands to control the car and I can adjust the windows remotely via the app. Because the car does so many things automatically, it is effortless to drive. Examples: the wipers, radio, side mirrors retraction, headlights & high beams, wake/sleep mode, the climate, the fuel door, and seat position (tied to the key card). The most useful feature is its ability to brake and hold the car at a stop automatically. Add to these features an uncluttered dash and I have never been so relaxed driving in my life. By the way, it has a ton of storage and the seats are the most comfortable I have ever had. I have driven or owned a lot of cars, including exotic sports cars, but I would not want to own any other going forward. We want to buy another. For about $40K, you get the most advanced, safest, most efficient, most convenient car in the world. When I worked out the numbers of the cost of ownership, the savings in fuel and maintenance (plus incentives) over ten years make it comparable to ICE cars $10K less. Bonus: It doesn't spew toxic fumes while you are driving it! Trust me: Just buy one or trade in your current one for a new one; you will see!
