PGT
I bought this car after my 97 Pontiac was totalled. I was absolutely in love with the look of this car and had always wanted it, so I was pretty excited to get it. The outside still looks sporty, but I have had some major problems with the body. First, I live in MN and while parking I hit a snowbank and the front bottom of the bumper broke off. Cheaply piece of plastic! Then I had someone hit me and couln't open my passenger side door, finally the paneling broke off on a drive home on the interstate. Maybe I just have bad car luck. As for the maintenance I haven't, luckily, had to replace anything major. It is almost at 140,000 and I just recently replaced my serpentine belt and tensioner.
A Far Cry from Driving Excitement
This was my first new car and I was very excited, but in the past 3 years, I've had too many problems to list. I held onto the car since I had an extended warranty, but when they refuse to honor this telling me that a water leak isn't a manufacturer's defect, that is where I draw the line. Too many problems and poor customer service! Driving excitement? I think not!

Great but only when new
Lots of repairs! Alternator went, climate control panel replaced twice and now gone again, coolant in the oil, transmission acts funny, the list goes on The V6 gives it a good get and up and go but it's noisy. Now the cabin noise is high at highway speeds and much of the suspension needs replacing. The extended warranty covered the car through 75k and it paid for itself at least 5 times over and it was only $900 to begin with. When the car was new, it was absolutely beautiful inside and out. More repairs are needed but I think I will just throw it away for a new car, trade-in is almost nil.
Good Car overall
I have a few small and easy fixible problems. It lasted me good through the slamming i put it through. I would think about getting a newer one.
The best car I have ever owned
We just recently bought a 1999 Grand Am SE. The performance of the 3.4 liter V- 6 engine is phenomenal! The sporty look, and feel of the Grand Am is perfect as well. It handles exceptionally well, and taking corners at higher rates of speed is as easy as blinking your eyes. But the Grand Am doesn't stop there. The ETS system makes the Grand Am an even better car to drive. For those tough steep grades, or snow and ice covered roads, you'll be thankful that the Grand Am has incorporated such a valuable asset! I have never been happier with this car, and I am a proud owner of a Pontiac!
kennedy's 1999 pontiac
i have had an excellent experience with this car. itis sporty, fun to drive and gets you where you are going without the worry of it breaking down. i have had to do brake work on it but it was a lease return and they needed repaired from the previous owner
Sporty Looking!
My 1999 Grand AM GT 4-Door, Black, Leather Interior Fully Loaded, was purchased ...after looking at various GM vehicles I found this one very much applealing to the eye, as well to performance. This is the best vehicle I have owned..roomy, sporty looking, great handling features. Good performance vehicle, has guts..when needed....Excellent Purchase
Braking down slowly
I have a 1999 Pontaic Grand am se. I got the car with 50,000miles on it. It now has 117,000 Still run Like the day I got it. But it 11 yrs old And it satring to show it age. Bothe head gasket were replace, Wheelbearing, And now its been stalling out and having problem with the fuel lines. Over all I think GM made a mistake in stopping the make of this car and Pontaic...
Buyer Beware
I bought this car with 30000 miles. In only 4000 miles the ignition harness blew out and all my gauges failed. It took forever to drop off my car a Pontiac since their lines were so long. My biggest complaint is resale, I paid 13000 for it in 2001 and it was worth 8000 in 2002 :(
the best car I ever had!!
I've had many cars in my lifetime and I honestly bought this without much research. I absolutely love it. It's comfortable on trips, great stereo system, I love the sunroof. Drives fast when needed.
Research this car first!!!!
I loved this car (bought new) but problems began immediately after my warranty ended. I understand that certain things will need maintenance, but not this many things at 40,000 miles! I have since read about other GT owners with the same list of problems (mainly 1998-2002 GT's)and just want other potential buyers to be aware because I wasn't.
Great Grand Am
I have not had any problems with this car and I have had it for over 3 years. Of course I take great care of it too.
grand am
nice handling good gas milage
Problems All Over
Where do I start. I purchased this car in 2000 and was initially happy with it. Then after 8000 miles the front brake pads were worn and badly warped. With brand new ones installed, I lasted another 22000 miles, while the rear shoes and drums never wore. The dealers response was don't ride the brakes. I downshifted every opportunity and with 90% highway miles, that never really was a problem. So after about 6 adjustments and rotors I purchased slotted rotors. 48000 miles and no problem. Brake bias problem some engineer overlooked I assume. 2 water pumps, starter, intake manifold gasket, etc. With all the preventative maint. done one can wonder what would happen if you slipped on one service.
Highly Under-rated vehicle
I have owned my car for almost 3 years now. I have only had three things in need of repair at the shop - the driver's side window, a gasket leak (caused by me), and new brake rotors. Otherwise, with regular maintenance, this car has been a reliable and consistent performer. Excellent pick- up, great handling, decent fuel- economy from a domestic V6, and styling that still turns heads. They didn't skimp on interior features either - the seats are comfortable, even on lengthy trips, and passengers aren't crammed in as an afterthought. The sound system is solid, and the A/C is still icey-cool.
Problems from day one...literally!
I loved the look of this car when I first bought it May 2004. Outside and inside had great looks, but found out how cheaply made it is over time. The dashboard is pealing up by the window, the bumpers are very flimsy...able to move when washing car! About a week after purchased i moved the seat higher and would not go back down. Car overheated 2 times within first 3 mths! Thank goodness for warranty! My blinker has been blinking for over 6 mths now non stop. The light isn't on, just the sound, the mileage display and clock/radio are messed up. The display shows distorted numbers. The gas mileage is horrible...about 220 miles per tank! My AC broke 3mths ago $1,000 to repair, not even worth it
Great car
This has been an excellent car for me. The only times it's been in to be repaired were after it was hit in accidents. Regular maintenance is easy and has carried this car a long way.
Built Cheap Won't Last
Bought this car in April of 2004. Really loved it until it began to fall apart. Wheel speed sensor went out a week after I bought it--it is a $500 part and not to mention the cost of taking it to a dealership to get it fixed. About two months after that, the crankshaft pulley broke and my auxillary belt slipped....another big expense. The power seat motor, along with the red lighting on the clock also went out. The brakes were also a huge problem with this car. In 5 months, I had the pads replaced twice! I liked it at first because of its sporty looks, but thank goodness I traded it in on something more reliable!
1999 Grand Am 4 dr Sedan
I had a car reck and a 1996 Grand Am saved my life. Iwould also trust my life with a 1999 Grand Am 4 dr Sedan.
good solid car
No problems except transmission just before the warranty expired (thank goodness). nice sturdy car, v6 has good power, good cornering, and fun to drive.
Has its ups and its downs
Overall I have really enjoyed driving my black Grand Am GT-1 a whole lot. It handles better than anything I have ever owned...I have Brigestone Re730 Z rated tires and they never squeal! However the car has had quality issues...manifold replaced twice, power window regulator, fan switch...luckily I had purchased a bumper to bumper warranty through 75,000 miles with Warranty Direct and it has paid for itself many times over. One design flaw is that the only way to keep out bad outside air is to set it to MAX AC because the car lacks a Recirculate Air button like every car I have ever owned in my life...it is a mystery why they didn't include such an essential....eg Deisel Bus up ahead
Great car
I have had this car for over 6 years, and I have put over 125,000 miles on it. The car is a great buy. we are looking to buy something bigger with our 3rd child on the way. I did go through a lot of brake pads, and replaced the drivers window regulator 1 time. The dealer did tell me about the aggressive braking system before I bought the car. All other repairs were normal (oilchanges, battery 1 time, tires). Easy to work on for the do it yourself person.
Something EVERYONE should read b4 buying
To make a salty story saltier, I bought the car on 07/02/03 it is now 09/20/03 and I have spent over $1500 in repairs. The car had one owner, so I paid cash thinking I was getting a deal. WRONG. I had to have my freon replaced, and it holds 2.5 lbs so that was the least of my worries. The blower resistor failed, coolant leaks, all kinds of noises caused by front and rear suspension, gas tank reading isn't totally correct. I've also had to have the spark plug wires and spark plugs replaced, normal maint... yeah, BUT found out the wires were bad to begin with.
My baby blue!
We have enjoyed this car so much! We haven't had any major repairs, only regular maintenance repairs. The car has get up and go!......Love the hum when accelerating! Feels like I'm driving a more expensive sports car. Downside: noisy, interior is cramped, cup holder is behind gear shifter, and it won't go into park with a large size drink in it .... bummer!
Great Car
The looks, performance and safety of this car are great. You need to keep up with regular maintainance or it can cost you. Gas milleage could be better but the fun handling can sometimes give you a lead foot.
Great Car, Great Fun!
I love my Grand Am, I have gone across the country in it, and it has been a pleasure to drive, very good sound system, handles very well!
Get yourself a pontiac
This car is excellent!! I drive a V6 1999 Grand Am and it is perfect!! Its so fun to drive and i love all the standard safety features...from the automatic traction system, to 4 wheel anti-lock breaks and everything else. my car is HOT and i love it!!
1999 pontiac grand am
The 1999 Pontiac Grand Am I really love this car.The proformance, reliability,it get grate gas milage.
Wouldn't Buy Another One
I bought my 1999 Grand Am GT Sedan brand-new from the dealer and had nothing but trouble from the start. First the entire break system went out, not once but multiple times within the first year. In the second year, the head gasket had to be replaced (and yes, I mainted my car religiously). The radiator had problems for the first couple of years and had to be replaced. The Alternator went out 4 times in year 3 of ownership. The wind noise in this vehicle is TERRIBLE. This car performs very poorly on wet roads. This is a beautiful car; I love its style and look. It's fun to drive. But if you're looking for dependability, look elsewhere.
I love it!
I may have just bought it, but it had 100,000 miles on it and was in pretty much imaculate condition. (except the PCV hose had been broken and was ducht taped) The over all handling of the vehicle makes me squeek in excitement every time I climb in it. I fell in love with it the moment I test drove it. The only good part about it was that the previous owners took great care of it and kept up on the mantenance. the only things I see is wrong, is that the coolant smells funny, the volume controls on the dash don't work properly, and the drivers side window squeeks when I roll it up, and the pcv valve being broken off
frustratingly great and horrible!
have had this car since 2000. replaced the alternator, battery, rebuilt the front end (brakes, rotors, pads, calipers, brake lines, 2 wheel bearings), paid $500 to have a dealer replace 2 sensors to keep the security system from kicking in and shutting the car off, the volume knob is broken (vol goes up when turning it down), front window motors need replaced (works 95% time)plastic dash is cracked, radio LCD light dead. spark plugs, coil packs, coil housing, replaced and still is mis-firing. During the warm months its a bear to drive with the tranny slipping badly.
The good and the bad
My parents bought this car and they love it once it was given to me about a year and a 1/2 after they bought it the water pump started to leak fluids. When it leaks it makse a shrilly squeak! Ive replaced the battery twice since ive had it! Fuel economy isn't bad. It takes about 35 dollars to fill up and it last about a week or so! The display died on the stereo but the sound is great! The fuse box is hard to open and oil filter leaks when new! Motorized driver's seat broke a year ago and the passenger no longer straightens or lays back
I'm SO glad I just got rid of mine!!!!!
Just traded this lemon in. Got around OK, but small things go wrong constantly. Like: 1)drvrs side pwr window motor blew 2)turn signal crazy (dash clicking continues incessantly after turn) 3)radio stopped working altogether, then just worked again 3 weeks later 4)oxygen sensor caused engine light to go on and off whenever 5) pasgr side mirror torn off in a car wash... by soft cloths no less. I could go on and on. To be fair, it drove nicely for 100K miles 'til control arms were shot (mechanic says this is BIG problem on Grand Ams). Last straw! EVERY day in last 75K miles, something was wrong with the car. Good riddance and buyer beware!!!
Old, Mostly Reliable.
I've had this car since it was nearly brand new and I have never had anything major go wrong with the engine. However, various stupid things go wrong with it, instead. Design flaws include: The back wheel wells were designed so rocks chip the corners of the back doors and it rusts like crazy, the security system will randomly cut off the fuel so it won't start, the exterior mirrors will break off if a light breeze blows past, there is something in the front doors that scratches the windows, and the brackets that hold up the power windows are flawed and break easily. Also, many parts are flimsy plastic that break. Other than that it's a solid vehicle that's a good size and drives well.
GrandAm, my best car ever
O.K., so we all know about the window motors, weak right side mirror, flimsy bumper covers, brake problems, faulty security lights, and the costly intake gasket job requirement at about 60,000 miles. Still and all, this car has been wonderful to drive. I wouldn't expect to operate any car without having to fix kinks, and when I add it all together, this car has not been very expensive to own. As for the security light not allowing you to start the car, try a new key, also, letting the car just sit for 20 minutes before you try to restart it works everytime. One honest mechanic just replaced a wire and it did not happen again for over a year. Beware expensive repairs for this.
I LOVE THIS CAR!
I love this car! It's fun to drive, feels like you are driving a race car or you are in a cockpit. Looks great and I constantly have people telling me it's a cool car. I have had no problems whatsoever with this car and it has 78000 miles and still going.
problems problems
I bought my 1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE 4 door in July of 2001. It was great until New Years Eve 2001. The next time we stopped, thank God it was in a parking lot, the car stalled and would not start anymore. We had to replace the alternator. Since then we have had to replace it two more times. I am afraid we will probably have to replace it again. With this car you never know. Also we have a leak somewhere in the radiator. The antifreeze keeps leaking out within 10 hours of filling it. Living in Michigan in the middle of winter with no heat is not a good thing. I always dreamed of owning this car. I never thought it would be a nightmare.
Much better than the old Grand Ams
I bought this vehicle in mid '98 right after it was introduced. I don't usually do that, since I like to give the manf. time to work the bugs out. I really like the way the car handles and the V6 has good power for a non- sports car. The only problem I have had is I had to replace the water pump at about 55,000 miles. The mechanic blamed it on the new Dexcool antifreeze.
1999 Pontiac Grand Am
Excellent vehicle to drive. I love the handling and performance of this vehicle. I have had to replace the front brakes 3 times in 87,000 miles. The brake calipers have been replaced once. Lots of city driving. The idle air control sensor went bad at 70,000 miles. Reccommend Goodyear eagle GT tires for great handling. The cup holders are a waste need to be relocated to a more user friendly area.
Love my Grand Am
I have had this car for 5 years now, bought off my aunt. It has 150,000 miles on her and she still runs like new! Ive had to replave the power steering pump and chip that controls electricals on the dash at about 140,000 miles. Other than that, she runs great, mpg is good and plenty of room for a family!!
Fast and Furious
I love my Grand Am. I love the acceleration for a 4dr midsize sedan. With 170 hp underneath the hood, it has decent power to go along with a decent ride.
99 Pontiac Grand Am GT (4-Door)
Overall a good vehicle. I had a little problem with the rotars having to be turned once a year (the severe vibration during braking let you know it was time)but, hopefully that is fixed now. Other than that I have had no problems with the car. Smooth ride and great handling.
don't make the same mistake
Uncomfortable seats. Plus my son is only five and his knees hit my back when he sits behind driver seat. We have had lots of electronic problems too. Power window controls went out temporarily, vertical seat adjuster went out, side mirror came off when touched, has a starter problem, and digital mileage and radio numbers go crazy. Bad seal above the front windows makes riding very loud when driving 60 or higher. Car stalls out or jumps sometimes when accelerating.
Look it over
I got my Grand AM as a graduations gift for graduating high school. I've had to replace the brakes 3 times in 6 months, i've had to replace the alternator. Also i wrecked this car doing 40 mph into the back of a minivan and my airbags did not deploy, even though it was totalled the insurance company still fixed it, luckly i had on my seatbelt that did enough damage. My transmission is slipping, and all my parking lights keep going out, also so are my brake lights.. I think that these are awesome looking cars but the mechanical errors need to be fixed!!!
this is a good 2.4 car
This car is actually a good car. Yes I've had my problems with it but what used cars don't you. When I bought it it had a major problem that the company fixed. But after that minor problems. It is by far the most powerful 4cycl engine I've driven.
Best GT so far!!
Maintenence. That's the most important thing to remember if you want to keep your car running at top performance. Change oil depending how and where you drive, filters are so important. Every once and a while, take your car to a good, HONEST mechanic. Your car should last you as long as you want it to!! My '99 Grand Am GT has 300,000 kms and still going strong! Remember my first word- MAINTANENCE!!!
DRIVES GREAT WHEN NOT IN THE SHOP!
This car is a mixed bag. When it's running, it's a great car. But I have had sooo many problems with it. I bot it from Hertz with 28,000 mi. Now has 59,000. I've had to replace brakes 2 x's (and they still feel weird), 2 altenators, 2 batteries, water pump. The door hinge is broken, the winshield washer tank leaks. There is an oil leak and transmission fluid is leaking. Just traded it in - couldn't take all the time & money in the shop.
Take my advice!
Where do I begin??? Four months after I bought the car, the power steering went out on me. I have had the power window motor replaced. The alternator is also new. The water pump had to be replaced. And twice now I have had to replace the headgasket. ( Which ran me in the neighborhood of $2,000 EACH time.) The brakes had to be replaced within the first year. And right now it is in the shop because I am having trouble with the transmission. I will never again buy a Pontiac. Plain and simple!!!
BAD NEWS
BRAKES ARE LIKE DISPOSABLE DIAPERS ON THIS CAR. IF YOU DRIVE IT HARD YOU'LL PAY. i HAVE SHUDDERING FROM THE FRONT END AS DO MANY OTHER OWNERS. THE ENGINE IS DIFFICULT TO WORK ON. THE SEATS DON'T LAST AND YOUR REAR SPOILER WILL FADE QUICKLY. PARTS ARE CHEAP FOR THE CAR SO IF YOU'RE MECHANICALLY INCLINED AND HAVE THE TIME YOU CAN KEEP IT GOING. I'M GLAD I BOUGHT THIS CAR BECAUSE I FORGOT HOW CRAPPY GM CARS WERE AND HAD PLANNED ON BUYING A TAHOE. NOT ANYMORE. THE CAR IS POORLY DESIGNED JUNK. AVOID IT. RESALE ON THE CAR IS PATHETIC.
Worst Ever!
This is the worst car ever built! When we bought the car it had 40,000 miles. So far we have had to replace the gasket intake, windows twice, brakes twice, the electrical system shorts out, and now our transmission is slipping. I'm buying a Ford next time!
