I drove between N.C and Wash DC for two years the car never broke and it has 115,000 miles still driving like new. I did not drive it for a year because i was serving overseas the only hing i had to replace was the battery and one rod. it is a great car.
Keeps on Running
Bought my Grand Am in 97 with only 4 miles on it. It now has over 105,000! Only repair that has been done was a water pump (at around 50,000 miles). Other than normal maintence, car has not cost me anything. Runs great everyday. I have the 4 cyl / 5 speed combo which works great. I wish that they had offered the 5 speed with the 6 cyl engine. Car does not excell at any particular thing, but does not bother me since it runs so good. Been very happy with my Grand Am.

Not a good car!
I've had my 97 GA for 5 years, and I've had only problems with it. I bought it used, and luckily I bought the extended warrantly with it -- the warranty paid for itself and them some. Just off the top of my head, I can think of several major problems I've had with it -- the rack and pinion had to be replaced (big $-- happened after my warranty expired!), the brake rotors and pads have been replaced twice, two water pumps, an oxygen sensor, and several other repairs that I can't even remember had added up to big $ on this car! I will not be purchasing a GA again!
Good reliable car
Almost 10 years old and going strong. Two engine gasket replacements, one on warranty were the only items out of ordinary wear and tear. Good reliable car.
My 97 Pontiac
This car has been a good car with a few minor problems. I have had the following failures: Alternator, muffler, brakes, and loss of refrigerant in the air conditioning system.
Overall, it has been a great car
I purchased my Grand Am GT in early 98 with 7500 miles. I now have 128000 on it and it has been very good to me. I've maintained it well. I have had few problems. I replaced the water pump at around 65,000 miles. Both window regulators have went bad. I also just replaced the alternator. Overall I think it has been pretty good. It still runs, drives, and looks like new although now there are some rattles in the interior. The door panels are made cheep. The factory stereo/wCD sounds great although the display quit working. I have the 2.4/auto combination. It performs well. Power is good. It also delivers outstanding fuel economy. I recently drove half way
Grand Am review
This vehicle is a nice compact and is good for single people who do not need much room in a car. Otherwise, it is too small for a family. The car performs well and is a stable vehicle to have around.
Grand Am Review
Excellent selection for Quality, Safety, and Reliability. There are things I like about it more than other more extensive vehicles I have owned.
Less than I hoped for
I bought a used 97 SE with V6 and low miles (only 44K). Maybe I picked a lemon, but I ended up disappointed. There were a series of expensive failures - power window rollers, starter, alternator. The shocks had too little travel, and bumps were bone-jarring. Then engine ran frighteningly hot in summer, and no cause was ever found. Gas mileage was so-so (24 city, 26 hwy). In fairness, there were some good things. The V6 engine is very smooth, if a bit underpowered for its size. And the car had surprisingly excellent handling on icky, icy Dallas freeways in February. Ultimately, lack of reliability became too much of a factor, so 2 years and 40K miles later, I went back to my old brand.
1997 Pontiac Grand Am SE by Alisha
I have driven many vehicles and i have determined my favorite was the 1997 Grand am that i bought this year. It handles great and it is really fun to drive even though it is an automatic. I have had many compliments on the car.
It's been a good ride w/minor irks!
Purchased in 2002 with 44K on the 2.4L DOHC 150hp, 150lbs ft motor. I drive approx. 150+ miles daily, it now has 163K and still runs strong at highway speeds. Problems w/ the car: alternator and starter replaced; seems to run through brakes and rotors; both power window motors failed; left stranded after clutch cable broke, a $300 repair; the cd player quit; I had to replace water pump (Who designed this motor? Dealers wanted $700-800. Why? It is run by timing chain and you have to disconnect the exhaust, the ex manifold, timing cover and chain to replace. This is not a lexus guys.) has been reliable car. If this motor is this good, the ecotec which replaces the 2.4 should be better!!!
Unreliable garbage
I replaced the electric motors in all four windows, the transmission, alternator several times, chews up front brakes and disks every 20,000 miles, fuel injectors clog, no seat supports, noisy, chews up tires, no turning radius, arrghhhhh!!!!
I won't buy same model & mfg as gm
The dealer said the muffler would never rust. But the truth I had changed both muffler & tail pipe after 6 years. The car was accelerating without even put my foot on the gas puddle (this means unreliable).
Fun...at a cost!
I love driving this car--it performs very well for the cost ($5,000 in early 2004) and handles like a dream for its age. However, there are some issues. I had to replace the brakes and need new pads literally every six months (and I don't drive it very hard). The audio display and climate settings displays sometimes show goofy non- numerical junk and/or no display at all. I've also had some issues with a grinding noise when turning (which is probably the result of hitting a deer - the mechanic's error, not Pontiacs). Finally, the driver's side window has given me all sorts of trouble (two window-engine replacements and still an issue). BUT, fun to drive!
My l997 Pontiac Grand AM SE V6 IS A 10
I bought my 1997 Pontiac Grand Am SE brand new from the dealer. It has been a wonderful and reliable vehicle. This V6 3.1 liter engine vehicle never breaks down, body style is sharp, made very well. It drives as smooth today as the day that I drove it out of the showroom.
I'll never buy another one
The transmission went out at 132,000 miles, had a new one put in and it started leaking tranny fluid 20,000 miles later. It had a coolant leak, the fan motor blew up on me, and the LCD display didn't work. After putting over $1700 into fixing it, I finally traded it off. Piece of crap, I'll never buy a Grand Am again, new or used.
Love my GT
I have a purple Grand Am GT right now and have owned it for a year. Except for having to replace the driverside window (which I guess is pretty common in Grand Am's), I have had a great experience with it. In fact, I love it so much that I'm checking into buying a 2003 Grand Am GT.
Love my RED ROCKET!
I am very happy with my 97 Grand Am SE :-) It goes from New York to Ohio on a regular basis and runs absolutely great... Does great in all the snow we have in Northern NY too!!! Only major problem was the alternator at about 70,000 miles & the water pump leaked and had that replaced... Other than that it has been fantastic and I plan to run the wheels off it until it won't go no more... :-)
Nothing Special
Mediocre. Ok to drive and looks ok, but nothing to get excited about. Like 4 drs, not too small inside, gd size trunk, 4 cyl engine gd on fuel and has some zip, water pump went at 80,000mi and costs approx $800. to replace because of intense labor chg, replaced struts, lcd on stereo shot, otherwise mechanically ok.
great
never had a problem bought it with 50,000 miles never had a problems it loves to be on the road
not bad so far
had it for 2 yrs now - knock on wood..no issues as of yet -
Great car but a impossible to fix proble
Baught the grand am gt used with 60000. I think that the car has superb handeling the 3100 is a powerfull engine, but there is a problem where I will lose all power while excellerating only happens once or twice a day but it drives me crazy.
Works for me
I love it. It has great acceleration, I've had nothing go wrong with it, and I like the style. I just drove 2000 miles on vacation and it still runs like a champ. All my friends love it too, they want to drive it and I have had many offers for it.
Good car for many years
I drove my 97 Grand Am for 7 years and it was very reliable, I did have problems with the window motor, brakes and a few minor things. Traded it in at 186,000 miles and it was really starting to make some scary noises. Cheap stereo system had to be replaced. Front wheel drive went through tires like nobody's business.
Endless repairs...
We got this car for next to nothing and that was good because we have spent, on average, $380 a month in repairs over the past 2 years. brake pads, fuel leaks, wires going, brakes going, converter going, start plugs, you name it. Side mirrors fall off (I've learned to order them online and glue them on) Fuel gauge inaccurate. Am buying new (used) car and not an American make.
love this car!
i will say that the body style is pretty ugly. it could use a lot better headlights also.
