Great Car for the money!
I came to this car from an Infinity and thought I would be stepping down. i was wrong! This car has everything great pick up, all the bells I need and use, great reliability, and best of all the fuel economy. The brakes are the only problem I have had. They may have fixed that since 1999. I am very happy with this car. I will keep it when I do get my next Infinity.
What a great suprise
I purchased my 1999 Mitsubishi Galant after a long relationship with a 1997 Hyundai Sonata that died the day after I made my last payment to the bank. When I drove the Galant I was quickly reminded of what I've been missing, and how driving a car should be fun. This car also appears to be holding it's value, which is something that my Sonata was not able to do. The transmission has a memory and adjusts to the way you drive, and the Galant has a fantastic look, kind of similar to a BMW.

Safe, Reliable, Comfortable, Economical, and Fun
I am very pleased with the purchase of this Galant ES V6. This is my family car and daily commuter (120 miles daily). Starting with a modest price, I enjoy the performance of a 24 valve Fuel injected V6. A solid shifting automatic transmission. Good steering response and agressive 4 wheel disc brakes. Comfort for a 6'1" male to drive. Fuel usage ranges 29/24 mpg depending on driver agression. I do not enjoy paying for "Premium grade fuel only". Also the faded paint is not fun to look at.
Not too happy
I've had a Galant for the last 4 years and all I can say is that it's been satisfactory. The car has a reasonably powerful engine but the brakes are simply aweful. I have had to resurface the rotors and also replace the rotors and pads for the 48.000 miles on it. Also the audio system is pathetic. I've also had some bearing and tire problems. The car came with Goodyear tires on which there was a manufacturing defect so there is a unique tire noise.
102,000 Plus Miles and Still Going Strong
I have had this car since 2002 when it had 45,000 miles. I currently have 102,000 miles on it and the car keeps on being very dependable for me. This is my first car and truly is my "baby." I wouldn't trade it in for any other.
So-so
"Decent" car with nice styling. Tons of complaints about how great it looks, and that's why I bought it. Didn't realize though that this 4 cylinder has no motivation at all, the tranny takes forever to downshift sometimes, and passing people is a joke. It does cruise nicely at 85-95 mph but getting there can be frustrating. The interior is comfortable but there are quite a few obnoxious rattles (dash, passenger door/window, glovebox....) Breaks are also mediocre
Not worth it if there's problems...
4 days after I purchased the car, I needed both front & rear brakes. The explanation was that it had been sitting on the docks in California for two months before I bought it and that the salt water probably caused corrosion of the calipers, rotors, etc. Unacceptable (IMHO)!!! Other problems here and there. Looking back on it, I did not get my money's worth for what I paid ($26k+). I would not have purchased this car back then...but hey...I didn't know better (I was young- only 25).
extremely good car
I was shopping around for all sort of cars and never thought about mitsu. Luckily, I saw this car at one of the dealers and fell in love with it at the first sight. This car has outstanding looks..honda and toyota do not come anywhere near its looks. Most importantly, the engine is extremely silent...being a premium package loaded, its all the more luxurious. I would recommend this car if one is looking forward to promising performance, good looks and reliability.
Galant #1
This car handles beautifully on all road conditions. I love the luxury interior design (very comfortable). Although the car is a '99, I still get comments about how new the body looks. Some people even think it is new.
Galant ES
Very nice car for the value
If only the dealers....
I felt I got a good deal on the car, but my father warned me that Mitsubishi dealers are far and few between, and terrible. He was right. After owning a Saturn, and being spoiled by Saturn service, it was quite a shock the first, and subsequent times, I returned my car to Mitsubishi for service. I gave them a horrible rating on my after ownerwhip feedback card, and never heard a peep from them.
Solid car
I personal like the car very much. Prior to buying this car I spent a few months driving around in a 99 altima, and I must say that the Mitsubishi Galant is a much better car. The Galant feels tighter, quitter, and much smother than its competitors. Although my Galant has a 4 cylinder it still feels strong and has ample power for quick acceleration. Excellent sound insulation eliminates road noise making you feel like you are in a high-end car. I personally think the gallant gives you the best bang for your buck.
GTZ
A very nimble car to drive, thanks to the front suspension settings, it tends to provide too much confidence on car handling, so be careful. Body Frame are too soft for this kind of settings.
What a Car!!!
What a car!!!! 150,000 miles and still going strong. Oil changes and gas are the biggest expenses. The interior is still great.
My 2nd Fav. car.
A good car for a good price. you will love the ride comfort and fuel eco. handles very good but might need a bit of a work. other than that its a good reliable car.
This is the Best Car Ever
My 1999 Mitsubishi Galant has a really smooth, yet tight ride. It gets great gas mileage and is a really classy car. The interior is really comfortable and nice. I've enjoyed mine very much.
Ladiez love it
Bought a 1999 Galant in 2002....not a good idea, at first glance. However, this is possibly one of the most stylish, well designed vehicles in the class. A comparably equipped Accord or Camry is at least $4,000-5,000 more, and both are arguably more conservative..... I can drive this car, have enough passing power, get awesome gas mileage (w/ K&N air filter), and not break my bank.... And best of all, every female I know has commented on how it lookz....maybe it is a poor man'z BMW, but being in the Air Force, I am a POOR man..... can't complain at all!!!!
Very Happy
I love this car. I have had it for three years. I have 147,000 miles on it and runs great. My husband and I own an auto repair shop, and rarely see Mitsubishis. My Galant died one time on me - the belt broke and the car shut down to prevent overheating. I had a Mitsubishi before and they have features no one else has such as headers, easy access in engine compartment (especially for an import), three low gears (vs. 2) if manually shifting (extra power to pass, etc.). I am going to keep this car for many more years. I can't complain about the lack of items that were obviously not part of the vehicle when bought - heated seats, no light in back seat, bigger back seat, etc. Yes, dealers are hard to find and provide bad service. But I am biased against all dealers. Go Independent.
1999 Mitsubishi
I have had my 1999 Mitsubishi Galant for a year now and I love it. I bought it at 150k miles, it is now at 170k. The only major problem I've had with it was the transmission, which went out do to my user error, it burns a bit of oil and the turn radius is not the best. Its the V6 model, very peppy and accelerates very quickly even with the new tranny I put in it. I put premium grade fuel in it, high mileage engine oil and I have not had a problem with it's reliability. The A/C, heater, power locks and windows STILL work, even in he cold. This car is like a roach car, I'm pretty sure it won't die. I met someone who has his at 330K miles and counting, another guy and he hasn't had a complaint.
Opinion after 100,000 miles
Although this car has been reliable and comfortable, I do have some serious complaints with the quality of the parts used on the car that are not related to the actual running of the car. I've had two interior door handles break off, hubcaps are constantly falling off, and the gas cover broke off. When I first got this car a friend of mine liked my car and got one within 6 months of my purchase. She had the same three problems. This is part of the reason she already sold hers. There is also an annoying rattle when I drive over 65mph. It seems to be coming from the glove box. I've taken it to the dealership and they can't figure out what to do to stop it.
Less Money, Great Value
This is my fourth year of driving this car. I bought it used at 58k miles and have been very positively surprised by its reliability. Now I have 117k miles on it and still nothing to worry about. So far, I have only changed the normal wears and tears, otherwise, really nothing else. A very reliable car. My wife's dodge grand caravan was a big money guzzler, quite unreliable. This car can go another ten years, but its time for another Mitsubishi - may be a Mitsubishi Endeavor. A friend of mine recommended Mitsubishi and I am positively surprised. They are not as popular as Toyota , and for this reason - pretty cheap. However, they may out-perform the popular brands. Less Money,Great value.
Safe- but don't pay too much!
I've yet to even have this car a full year and have had nothing but bad luck with it! The brakes are terrible and went a month after buying the car and the tires are terrible during the winter. The vacuum for the A/C broke and while it is simple to fix, it is located under the dashboard which means a huge labor cost. I've had two accidents; the first was a front end collision with a neon, with a lot of damage, but the car ran beautifully after it was fixed until the second; someone hit me in a parking garage and completely damaged my front suspension.
Could've been designed better
Overall I would say the Galant is a "Pretty" car.. However, it lacks in interior design. The back seat is entirely too cramped, they should have cut back on trunk size to accomodate anyone over 3 feet sitting in the back. You couldn't find a penny using the dome lights centered in the front of the car..Also, the bumpers are dented too easily. A crash impact of 1 mile an hour causes thousands of $'s worth of damage..Mitsu needs to listen to consumers and go back to the drawing board.
Good Little Car
Just bought a 1999 Mitsubishi Galant last year for my daughter from "A little old lady . . .", it had only 39k mi on it. Its gas mileage is great, nearly 30 mpg on average. It has great pep too. The engine and tranny are very good, nice and smooth. One thing that I am disappointed about is the vibrating breaks - it must be those warped rotors. I am looking into higher quality replacements. Also, the car has some noise in rear end when turning, this may be more problems in supsension. Overall though seems to be a good car.
OK , for now...
I've had this car for a little over 3yrs and slapped on 46k miles. Major gripes: perpetual tire/wheel issues: requires regular rotor smoothing; uncomfortable seats for medium/long trips; "adaptive" transmission - One minute you actually feel like there's almost 200bhp under the hood, next you have a Geo Metro. The dealer informed me that it gets "confused". Clearly a very technical evaluation of the problem. My trick, which will likley cost me later, is to manually shift into 3rd or 2nd at a suitable speed. It's average car with nice styling and a better than average engine for the price. I'll be keeping it for a while longer.
100,000 plus
With a 115,000 miles it still feels and drives like the day I bought it. Regular maintance is the key to any cars longevity.
Great Car
I've owned my Galant for 2 years now, no problems except a hose that broke and the ever troublesome glove box latch. My glove box would fly open going over bumps or pot holes in the road! It only cost us $25 for the part to replace it though. Brakes are great except they squeak all the time. Fun car to drive in the summer, not good in the snow/ice at all. Very reliable, but mine is a V6 and the gas gauge drops pretty quick and the manual says to give it premium fuel, ouch! We were thinking about trading it in but just couldn't give it up because it's such a reliable car that has a great body design and looks good even 10 years later.
Great Car
My Mitsubishi is a greatly styled car & very dependable. Most powerful 4 cyl. I have ever owned. I would buy another!
Satisfied Customer
I bought mine during the year end clearance, got a super deal. With minor hail damage. My sticker was $20900, got it for $17,300. I love the elegant look of the interior. (Camel color) The dark grey interior is ugly. Nice smooth ride, good pick up for a 4 cyl, reliable. Nothing but regular maintenance.
I Love Mitsubishi!
When I first got this car in 2006, I was really worried because it had over 106k. I bought the extended warranty and that eventually expired. The only thing I've had to replace on the car in 3.5 yrs was a windshield ($130), a new battery ($50), new tires ($250), the engine belt was squealing but I didn't replace it until it broke as I was on the highway and caused overheating and needed a new radiator, old one cracked (my bad). Oh, and brake pads. THAT'S IT! Love my car and intend on buying another Galant when the time comes.
Competant family car
I love this car. It has an aftermarket "INJEN" air intake, its very peppy for a four cylinder. The gas mileage is amazing. I love the styling its very sporty. The alloy rims that come from Mitsubishi are very elegant looking. The car comes loaded with standard features. The transmission delivers strong and at high speeds the car handles well. Its built as good as a Toyota or Honda. The rear seating is a bit tight for adults. The car has had no real problems other than normal maintance.
Mitsubishi is coming around
I'm still pleased with this car at 60k mi. I've experienced one bad and one good dealership -- same experience with Ford and Dodge. It has great styling. This car hasn't given me one bit of mechanical trouble. There were a couple of loose panels that rattled, but that was an easy fix. With only 3 recalls for the first year of the body style, its been great!
99 Galant
Overall pretty good car except for brakes. No real problems in 85K miles
Best Car for the Value!
Bought this car used with 108,000 miles for only $4,000. This car is fully loaded and is beautiful! Everything was in excellent condition. I now have roughly 123,000 miles and only have done two oil changes, replaced the tires and changed out the belts. This car runs so smoothly. Quick acceleration, very quiet. Stereo is great! Very comfortable. This car is a head turner! Everyone envies me of this car. It looks and feels like a luxury sedan, and looks like it would be worth tons more. I highly recommend this car!
This car is fun to drive

Not Perfect But Nice
I originally bought this car with the intent to trade it in within two years. 3 years later...still driving it with no immediate desire to trade. It has a smooth ride with just enough power and stylish looks. Did have a few minor problems but the dealership I brought from has a great service department and they always take of any problems I have plus provide a rental car. I think for the money this car is the best deal you can get. It definitely forced Toyota, Honda, and Nissan to go back to the drawing board after the Galant was rated best mid size sedan in 1999. Definitely buy an extended warranty though.
Its awsome
I have so much fun with this car its my first car but more then any other car i have driven its the best one out of all. its just an awsome car to drive.
Great Car
I bought this car when it had 23K miles on it. It had been a rental car prior to me owning it. It now has 175K miles on it. It's been a great car. I did have some problems w/ the brakes early on. Seems like it went thru a lot of them. But I have not have that problem now in over 5 years. At the 10 yr. of ownership mark little things are staring to show their age. Airbag light stays on now and the cruise stopped working about 8 months ago. The electric locks needs a new motor as of about a year ago, as it's making a buzz noise when you unlock it with the key. Horn also stopped working about 8 months ago.
Great Car - Lousy Dealer Service
V6 engine is VERY powerful, though it likes to eat GAS. Dealer could not program the Keyless door entries, Headlights and brake lights can't be replaced by owners. At 62000 the only replacement item was the alternator. At 20000 there was a problem with a noise as the car was in motion coming from the brake area, the dealer fixed this. The only thing lacking with this car is the DEALER SUPPORT network like HONDA or TOYOTA offer. Still I would rate above average.
Best Car I Ever Had
I loved my 1999 Galant. I had over 100,000 miles at the time my car was totalled in an accident in August.
Great Car for Dough
Bought from little old lady in 05 with 36000 miles for only $5500. After putting new brakes and tires on it drives like a dream and can avg 26 mpg if your careful with lots of spunk. Only downside is little knobs and lights tend to act up but overall has been great car for my daughter.
My Car
Great teenager car - the nose end is a little long and pointy, but that's about all that I don't like about it. It's a great car and drives well, I have got stuck in the snow once or twice, but even though it dosen't have 4 wheel drive it does go pretty well in the snow. Oh, one other small thing I don't like about it - the cup holder situation, there are two cup holders but the back one is covered by the console lid that sticks clear out, but again just a small dumb thing.
Amazing Car for the Price
I bought a black ES Galant, with the sunroof, and alloy package...very sport and sleek looking car! For a four cylinder I have found it to be very peppy providing plenty of horses when I need them. The rear seating can be a bit cramped, but the front seats are long haul comfy. I love the design of the car and have had many compliments. This car is comparable to the Accord, or Camry, but for the fraction of the cost. Going back and forth to school, I needed a good, economical, dependable, car...this is what the Galant delivers...plus so much more!
Not Honda, more like 4 Dr Eclipse
Very responive to drive, no comparison with Sebring / Stratus with V6. Hugs corners like tiger paws, Huge wing, nice bmw-like styling. Makes a great rental car. V6 same price as Honda 4
The 1999 Mitsubishi Galant
I bought my 1999 Galant in August of 2005 and have loved it ever since. It is fun to drive and handles very well. The exterior styling of the car looks great. The interior is nice and clean. The car is reliable and I have had no problems with it.
Best Car I've Had
The '99 Galant is the best car I have had. I bought it private party in Aug. of 2005. I drive about 50 miles everyday, and have had few problems with this car. It runs great! The fuel economy is really good. Mitsubishi knew what they were doing when they designed this car. The body style is sleek and looks good. The engine is peppy and doesn't hesitate.
long term review
I have owned this car since new, putting 135,000 miles on it. Mitsubishis are fun to drive because they are a light car, not over engineered. My Galant gets very good gas mileage, about 28 mpg (I do 80 percent highway miles and 20 percent rural driving with few stop lights). Quality and reliability is probably a little bit below Honda and Toyota, however the cost of the vehicle new is below the other brands, and used Mitsubishis are fairly inexpensive. The two bugaboo's with this car is the brakes - the rotors warp and there is really no solution so just drive it with warped rotors - and the dealers which are far and few between. If you can find a local mechanic that is good you'll be fine.
My 99 Galant
My Galant which is a V6 is a great car overall, i love everything about it. The style, looks, and more. But, mostly the one thing that i love about this car would be the power that it has. I have put a couple grand into this car for performance so mine is puttin out about 210-215 horsepower. I have put this car to the test on the highway and in the city. I would mention this car to a few people I know. But, sadly, its a 99 and 1999 Galants arent made anymore. But if they still were i would mention this car to alot of people.
Love it!
I've owned this car for almost 3 years and never had any problems at all. So low on maintenance and fun to drive. I had an accident and it got totaled, but till last day I loved it.
An adequate car for a very good price
The 99's came with bad tires, which I hope have been replaced. This is my second Galant. My first was an 89, which I drove for 180,000. Now, that was an amazing car. If you can find a low mileage 89 -91, buy it. I doubt if this one will make that, but I am sure it will hit the century mark All in all, considering that it is at least 2,000 less than the Camry and Accord, I Would recommend it. My dealership is a service oriented one, so shop around, but if you are in the NYC northern surburbs, Yorktown Mitsubishi is worth a visit.
