Rolled The Dice - Bought High Mileage

After turning 40 recently, I decided to properly kick-off my mid-life crisis. I was going to go with either a boat or a car. A 2004 S430 won. I found one with 114,000 miles on it on Autotrader. I suppose I got the "base" model 430, but it is absolutely remarkable. The suspension, coupled with the car's sheer size, makes for an airplane like ride (sport settings are also present). I've taken it on 2 long road trips and been in very good spirits after arriving. Tips for Buying Used: *Comparison shop! These cars depreciate wildly. I paid too much. Find the KBB price and stick with it. *Have a genuine STAR diagnostics ran. *Beware the "stuck in park" potential

Purchased this car used with 55kms, it is now 7 years old and has 130kms. It continues to drive as well as it did 3 years ago and have not had any issues with it. Besides being smooth, comfortable, solid, reliable, powerful and surprisingly economical; it is has a sense of dependability and agelessness about it. It is a serious vehicle, you know, not a gimmicky in your face car,

Appreciating Depreciation

When I purchased this Southern California car it was a one owner eleven year old $95K S Class MB with 63K miles. I paid 13% of the original price. As far as I'm concerned it is just broken in good. The price that I paid (lol) wasn't much more than the tax paid on the original purchase so I am appreciating depreciation. Sometimes its good to be second. This is a great automobile, solid, quiet, powerful, looks great and has a long life ahead of it. When you buy a used car of this caliber you are getting a first class top tier motor car for less money than the cheapest new base vehicle that will be rattling in a year. You give up the latest in technology but who needs it; yesterdays technology, for the difference in money, is pretty good.

i have owned 2 lexus and a jaruar but if you die without owning a mercedes you've missed something. there are faster cars, cheaper cars, and even more reliable cars. however, this S model does everything so nicely, with so much snob appeal that if you can afford it, i would tell you to go for it. remember, when you die your kids will go through your money like water through a goose. spend some on yourself while you can. the 500S, amg, and 600S are overkill, totally unnecessary but if having a car that will hold 200mph turns you on. they are available.

... by inexcusable disregard for quality and repair design. In short, if repair costs scare you AVOID the S600, if you don't care about repair costs I highly recommend it! If you fall in between, read on . . . This review is specifically for the S600, most of the problems are specific to - or worsened by the V12; unfortunate because this car is an absolute pleasure and blast to drive. NOTE: See update at bottom after I owned this care for nearly 5 years. I have owned and loved 3 Mercedes prior to this one. 1996 (R129) SL500, 2005 SLK55 AMG, 2003 ML500. The nearly 20 year old SL500 is probably the best car I have ever owned (and my wife frequently reminds me have owned more than 60). The ML500 is my wife's, 160K miles and it still basically drives like new with less than $2K of repairs (not including maintenance) over it's entire life. SLK55 was brilliant for the entire time I owned it. I purchased the S600 used with 73K miles on it. Out of the 60 cars mentioned above, I have only purchased 2 new. When I purchase a used car I know it is used and plan on spending $2K or 20% of purchase price (whichever is greater) to repair things that have been ignored by the previous owner. I am saying this to provide context and to explain that I don't buy a used car and expect it to be like new. The S600, within 3 months, cost 50% of purchase price in repairs including: 1- Environmental control sensor (common problem on this version of S series) $400 2- Front ABC Struts, $2,400 3- Driver side Ignition Coil Pack $1,800 4- Plugs (recommended every 30K miles) $280 (NOTE: Labor for plugs was applied to coil pack above, otherwise plugs are $900 themselves for parts and labor) 5- Right and Left control arms due to broken bushings $800 Total = >$5,500 NOTE: Although the Struts are a semi-common problem on this version of the S Class, the problem is significantly compounded by the weight of the V12. Ignition coil pack is specific to the V12, on the V8 each coil can be purchased separately, in the 12 6 coils are grouped in a 'pack' meaning if ONE COIL goes bad you REPLACE SIX! Control arm bushings is an issue that is much more common in the V12 due to weight change and no change in design. NOTE: I had a good mechanic go through this car prior to purchase, other than the struts, which I could argue he should have caught, the other problems did not present until I had driven the car for 1000 miles or more. The problems also didn't occur all at once, I fixed one, then another occurred. That is the bad, on the other side of the coin, I am hugely impressed with the driving characteristics of the car. It is a nose heavy pig of a car that weighs well over 2 tons but acceleration is fantastic; I have a 2011 Corvette Grand Sport which will kill the S600 0 to 60 - but 30 to 80 the S600 is nearly even. The S600 takes aggressive corners (corners marked as 35 MPH taken at 60 MPH) and remains almost perfectly flat and entirely composed. With the ABC settings and ride height adjustments this car can go from feeling almost like a really good GT car, to a very comfy drive around (on really bumpy roads). All 4 seats recline, massage, heat and cool (although 'cool' is really ventilate and doesn't work very well). Finally, this is all delivered while getting about 25 MPG on the freeway (drops to about 12 around town). I had planned on purchasing an SL65 or SL600 next spring (SL600 would replace SL500 - SL 65 would replace Grand Sport), at this point I do not intend to ever purchase a 12 cylinder Mercedes again. If I move forward with the Mercedes I will either go with the SL55 AMG or, more likely, the SL 550. That said, the incredibly crazy frequency of issues on the S600, and me having to avoid the top-end Mercedes models (the 63 AMG is still too new for my budget), opens the door to a Jaguar XKR, which which is something that was an almost non-option prior to my experience with the S600. Mercedes had a customer for life, that they have turned to an opportunistic shopper. UPDATE: I just traded this car in for a 2008 GL550. Over the ~5 years and 64,000 miles I had this car it was amazing, and honestly I would still have it except (and I am not joking) I was using it as a tow vehicle for my 4 sear rzr and my wife didn't like the way it looked doing it. It had more power and more torque that the 550, and on the freeway handled towing with ease, although finding someone to put a hitch on it was a challenge. In addition to the work outlined above, I had to change the other coil pack, and replace some vacuum actuators (probably didn't HAVE to do that because the faults were really annoyances, like the soft-close trunk having to be closed like a normal trunk, and the back headrests not falling. because I decided that the car had probably been neglected in terms of repairs, I have increased reliability to 2 from 1. This is probably the most comfortable car I have ever owned for road trips. Darn, this is all the space tha

This car has all you would expect for it's money, and then the roof rattles some, the tire pressure monitors keep tripping and failing, the battery is flat after a 2 week business trip. Should not happen for this kind of money. No space for a cell phone, cupholders are a joke, and you forget all that when you hit the throttle and slide over the freeways, but then it all comes back at a traffice light. Great ride, classy car, but I am cured for life trying to put money on the table to buy such a set of wheels new, ever. I am soar but still OK, will enjoy it a few months more, but never buy this car new. What a shame for a handmade Mercedes, I lost a lot of faith in MB.

Bought the car in April 2016 with 96,000 miles. Owned it For 8 months and put 6,000 miles on it. In that time i replaced the Rear Air Shocks, Front upper and lower Control arms, Valve Cover gaskets, PSE pump, rear brakes (wasn't working when i bought it) The car started rusting at the bottom of the front doors because of an apparent design flaw. Massage Seats don't work, automatic trunk open/close doesnt work. My advice would be only fix things that actually need to be fixed and keep up on preventative maintenance like fluids, brakes ect. Fixing everything that goes wrong on this car is VERY expensive. Even with it's problems you cannot get a more luxurious car than this for the money. It's extremely quiet rides very smoothly, has tons of space, materials are very good inside and has the power to pass civics on the highway with ease. Make sure you get a w220 that's had it's common problems addressed already instead of paying for them yourself.

Initial Impressons of the new S Class

This car replaced identical 2000 S Class which had numerous electrical and computer problems. New model is free from these glitches. Never had mechanical problem with Mercedes. Enjoy the quality of the burl walnut and interior appointments. New features that I like are the power trunk, keyless go start on the shift knob, voice control on nearly everything, power curtains, digital readout of tire pressures and a much improved navigational system on DVD. Car remains very responsive with sharp turning radius. I don't need AMG assist for my driving. It appears to me M-B has given us many innovations that are quickly copied by other manufactures.

I originally had a 2000 S430, and this 2004 is leaps and bounds an improvement over that car. The Seven speed tranny is smooth, and responsive. Love the exterior and the interior. The quality improvements inside are amazing. The exterior is Black Opal, with Grey interior. The combination is beautiful.

Great car, bought used with 30k miles; strong engine, truly quiet, smooth, amazing ride. But, MB, masters of engineering, why oh why? The black temp adjust clip on rear passenger ventilation is missing. Can't replace $40 clip. You must replace $700 unit (before labor)! That's engineering excellence? Think you forgot who you're engineering for. I fear for the next minor flaw. Also, cupholder is a bust and console space is nill. Love the car overall, but I marvel that a car originally selling for six figures forgets some basics.

I will be taking her home on Monday. The car has 29,000 miles on it and all I can say after all the crap my family has gone through for 7 years, this car is a blessing. My we enjoy it in good health and may the car always come though for us. So far it is crazy awesome. Previous cars I have owned new were: 1994 300ZX 2 seater with T-Tops, 2001 Audi A6Q 3.2 , 2006 Audi A6Q 3.2, 2009 BMW 328XI. This will be the first time I have bought a used vehicle in 18 years. So far so good, will follow up with real review as I drive it more.... :)

This is the ultimate ride. You won't need antianxiety medication if you drive one of these. It's a totally relaxing experience - like riding in a very comfortable living room. I've put the 4MATIC to the test, and it survived unbelievably well. The keyless entry is something that all cars should have - very convenient.

i just got my S430 a couple days ago and i love it. the interior is amazing. it feels as if you were in first class in an air plain. the engin is very quiet and the handeling is great. the acceleration on this car is also great. for a over 3000 lb car the acceleration is very quick(6.9 sec). the nav. screen is also very big and legable. i also love the dashboard. it is big bright and clear. the tire preasure monitor is also a good thing to own. but my overall favorite thing is the driver and passenger seats. i would use them in my livingroom if i had a chance. they are like floting on a clowd.

I bought this over the S600 Twin Turbo after driving it. Other than a recurring rattle from below, the car has been to say the least, a phenominal automobile. I believe I drive the car to it's limits and have consistently been able to run 0-60 times in the low 4 sec range (timed). I like to go sideways but when the traction is turned off, the computers still take over when your in a drift. Very annoying. CD based Nav has been addressed with the 04', and other than brakes needing new pads at 6000 miles, I've been extremely impressed and very satisfied. Truely an awesome car.

This car zooms. Very responsive handling and comfortable. I wish I drove it as much as the service manager at the shop I bought it from! This car has been in the shop 5 times since I bought it. Each time it was for a system failure. The pump that inflates the bladders in the dynamic drive seats failed. The active suspention failed, The throttle regulator failed and the multi-disc CD player had to be replaced. Although the service department was very helpful, I am disturbed that so many things have gone wrong with such an EXPENSIVE car. The Mercedes people tell me to expect such breakdowns as this is a very sophisticated car that has many complex systems. I should have got the Audi A8

The Mercedes S is expensive. the lexus is a fine car, i have owned 3. the BMW is a different car, simply too much trouble to drive. harsh, not worth my effort. the Mercedes S is not perfect but not far from it. if you have the free bucks. I really love the big Mercedes for what it is, there are faster, better values, larger and smaller cars. However,if you can afford the ticket on the S and want the general best, buy the S. it does everything well you can find better on any one point, but the total is less then you get in the Mercedes S. the sum is unbeatable and in one move you can get all your neighbors to hate you. think of that.

2004's are "satelite ready" but Mercedes is not saying when the Sirius Satelite radios will indeed be available. And of course the electronics are such that you can't have one installed at your local Tweeter store. You pay for a feature that may never arrive and end up with a system that you can't modify on your own. Only the in dash CD player plays mp3 CD's -not the 6 CD changer in the trunk, which by the way, a Mercedes techical bulliten says jams. Disappointing to say the least. I'll revisit the Phaeton or wait for 2005 to start the search anew.

Fun to drive factor is a 10+. Unbelievable torque. Handling and braking are excellent for a sedan this big and heavy. Styling is understated. Comfort and inside room are excellent. Keyless go feature is excellent, however it has failed 4 times in the first year. Highway mileage is 18-19 mpg, city about 12mpg. Built in phone is OK with vocal commands useful. Get parktronic - it's needed. Automatic trunk opener/closer is a favorite - used frequently. Auto Tire pressure reading is useful, but a pain to deal with. I've driven MBZ E Series, Audi A8, Jaguar VandenPlas, Jaguar XJR, MBZ CL500. This car is by far the best sedan! Bought easily over an S55. Great car!

I HAD THIS CAR FOR 6 MONTHS BEFORE TURNING IT IN FOR AN S600. THE S55 WAS A BLAST TO DRIVE, BUT IT WAS A BIT TO SPORTY FOR SUCH A LARGE SEDAN. IF YOU HIT THE GAS FROM A STOP, A LOT OF TIMES IT WOULD BUCK, AND THE SHIFTING WAS NOT NEARLY AS SMOOTH AS I FELT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. JUST A PERSONAL OPINION. THE S600 IS AMAZING! IT APPEARS TO HAVE MORE POWER,( 2 TURBOS) SMOOTHER SHIFTING, AND EVERY TOY THAT MB MAKES. SUEDE HEADLINER, PHONE, 4 SEAT HEAT/AC/POWER, WOODPKG, KEYLESS GO, VOICE COMMAND...ALL STANDARD. I purchased this car in September 2004. I had C230 Kompressor Coupe 2002, which was a great car without any problems. After owning my first Benz I knew it would be the only vehicle I would purchase in the future. The car has a fantastic ride, great pick up and some really terrific features. If you are look for a classy car with superior workmanship, then this is the car for you. We had also owned a large sport utility but decided the larger Mercedes would be a better fit for us for ride as well as safety. I think the car is superior. Hands down one of the best rides on the road!

This car is worth every penny. It will beat any Ferrari or anything from Italy and for sure anything from Bavaria.

The S500 has a lot but as compared to other luxury vehicles I have been in recently, the s500 seems to be primative. The front seat I find to be very uncomfortable and hard. When I have to go on long drives I choose a differnt vehicle. However, when arriving at a function the s500 still turns heads.

I've owned a number of S Class MB over a 25 yr span. As much as I love driving my current S430, I must say I'm frustrated with the little things that are constantly going wrong. Loud stearing, clock issues, SRS sensors, saggy sunroof cables, etc. But everytime I'm in a loaner and return to the wonderful drive and feel of the S class, I'm reminded of why I keep buying them. Buy the extended warrenty!!!

from the time i purchased this vehicle i experienced steering wheel vibration which was coming from the vehicle tires. on 8 different occasions the dealer has not been able to resolve this vibration problem. the tires are wearing abnormally on the sides and at 5k miles the dealer replaced the whole set of tires. till this day i am still encountering this same problem of constant vibrations and abnormal tire wear.

I had to get the S500 asap. The reason? I previously owned a S500 on a 2 year lease. When the lease was up my wife urged me to get a Lexus & I did (for 2 years) Yes, A lexus is great. BUT a S500 is like no other car. NOW I am soooooo happy! Quality=The Best & Fun to drive & Safety. If You have the cash, GET THIS CAR.

I read about quality issues with Mercedes and I cannot relate. I have had 2 recent S classes and 2 SL classes. All with no problems. The S500 does 0-60 in sub 6 seconds and is quite a surprise. Must be the 7 speed transmission. I wish the engine sounded a little more throaty. It's too quiet. The S500 is more economical than my 2003 S430?? Don't know why, but a whole mile per gallon better in town.

I've had the S430 4matic for nine months now and with only 31,000 miles on the odometer, I have been to the service department 31 times for various mechanical and electrical problems during that nine months. Merecedes has lost its glory, as a German national told me, pleople in Germany prefer Japanese Cars. After my last two Mercedes (both were defective), I'm giving Lexus a try, "Hello LS 460"

Within an hour of bringing this brand new car home the passenger side xenon headlights burned out. The car has a vibration at 55 mph and above. The car has been back to the dealership for 5 days out of the 8 I have had it and they still cannot fix the vibration. They put brand new michelin tires on it yesterday and it still vibrates. They are calling in a MB technician next week to see what is wrong. It vibrates so bad that the passenger seat and headrest shake. The cupholders are really bad. The dealership has been very professional but have been unable to fix the problem. Wish I had purchased the LS430.

I've had this car almost 2 years. No issues. S500 engine with 7 speed transmission is like silk with rocket take-offs when passing on highways. 20-24mpg on hwy / 18-20 avg combined. Mercedes has addressed quality issues which were apparent during the 1990's. I've had a 2000 E320 and the 2004 S500. Both cars have been issue - free and low maintenance while a pleasure to drive. Nice curb appeal was well for business.

You got to love the driving experience this ride provides its fortunate owner. You also have to appreciate the awesome exterior design and the resulting looks and conversation that breaks out every other time you take it out. But like every large purchase and decision there are drawbacks. I have driven Lexus LS 400's & 430 Ultra Luxuries for years and believe I know quality and great engineering and the Germans just cant compete with Japanese. If only the Japanese could build a heart pumping, hold on for dear-life sport sedan like the S55, I would be with them for life. My wife drives an '05 BMW 745LI or an X5 and the 745 is in the shop every other month. The trade off is worth it!

The 2004 S430 is not worth the money. We have had problems that have never been corrected since the day we took delivery. There is always a problem that can never be fixed, nor does Mercedes care to solve the problems. We are even told that the battery cannot support all the electronics in the car, so if you go on vacation, you better buy a voltage charger or assume your electronics won't work when you get back! Moreover, Mercedes doesn't care about this or any other problem they know exists!
