Too many recalls and issues for a Mercedes-Benz
09/20/23 update: Still "Do Not Buy". All prior reported issues are still present. 03/19/23 update: No change to the "Do No Buy" review. All previously mentioned issues are still ongoing. Suspension noise when entering/exiting the vehicle continues to get worse. 09/17/22 update: The coating around the steering wheel controls continue to peel. A piece covering the door lock button has come off. The outside window trim continue to look worse. It now has 41.7K miles on it and is still housed in a garage. No change to the "Do Not Buy" review. 03/16/22 update: More of the coating around the controls of the steering wheel has come off. An inch-long section of the driver's seat MB Tex material has cracked. The aluminum trim around the windows has some oxidation and looks bad. The vehicle has 39.6K miles on it and is still housed in a garage. My recommendation is still a Do Not Buy. 09/15/21 update: The coating around some of the controls around the steering wheel is beginning to peel off. Vehicle is housed in a garage when not used so not exposed to the elements too much over the past 18 months. The paint chipped off the driver’s side unlock button. This 2016 vehicle only has 37K miles. I am probably not going to get another MB. My perception of quality has taken a big hit. I cannot recommend this vehicle. No changes to previous ratings. I would not recommend this vehicle. 1) There is too much road noise for this to be a Mercedes vehicle. 2) At 23K miles there were suspension issues. They had to replace struts. 3) There have been too many recalls. 4) At 26K miles (about 6 months later) the suspension issues are back. 5) Brakes squeal when backing up, especially in cold weather. 6) Main battery had to be replaced at 26K miles. 03/04/2020 update: The suspension issues are back. The reliability of the 2016 model is simply not what one would expect from Mercedes-Benz. 09/11/2020 update: The suspension issues are back. The auxiliary battery/capacitor had to be replaced, but they were supposed to have replaced it in February when they replaced the main battery while the vehicle was under warranty. Cost: $359. 03/14/2021 update: No changes to prior ratings. I still would not recommend this vehicle.

Brake issue STILL EXISTS after 3 years of owning
The loud brake squeal (in cold weather) while reversing has NOT been resolved after 3 years of owning this car. This is frustrating since I have to deal with this loud noise from the brakes as soon as temps drop below 50. MB replaced the brake pads (under warranty) last year and for a couple of weeks things were fine but, problem started again after that. I just left my car for service again for the same issue. . I have owned this GLC for 3 years now and unfortunately I will not recommend this vehicle anymore as this gets frustrating every day when your loud squeal gets attention from your neighbors.

So far so great!
Have had the GLC about 3 months and have about 2000 miles on it. It does everything it is designed to do. It is a pleasant place to sit in in traffic and move about town, but can quickly change character if you wish. Just downshift with the paddles or change the driving mode. Mileage has been decent considering my mostly city/traffic driving (about 23.5 mpg). Like BMW, the GLC shuts off the engine if you are stopped for a few seconds. Since the car is so quiet I do not notice this, and so I think it helps with some of that city mpg. My friend who just got a BMW X1 turns off the auto shut off because he says it's annoying. Possibly because BMW wants you to hear the engine - so I can see what he means. My only quibbles are things I knew about the car before I got it - getting in and out takes a little bit of effort, unlike my old RAV 4 which was so easy. However, the GLC seat is incredibly comfortable. Rearview from the side mirrors are only so-so, but the Blind Spot Monitor takes care of that. The Burmester stereo is great, but I would recommend using .wav files which are uncompressed. The 2 USB ports, the SD card, and the 10.8 GB harddrive mean that there is about 200 GB of storage (64 GB max for USBs and SD) - so that's approx. the equivalent of 20 GB of compressed music. The difference in sound is worth it to me (e.g., Lexus does not play .wav files through the USB; BMW does, though). The active safety feature of warning/stopping the car if you get too close really works. It does, however, beep at me when the car in front of me is almost finished making a right turn and I have not braked. Better safe than sorry, I suppose. As far as all the buttons, etc., I found that after a few days I easily got used to it. Still finding some neat little tricks here and there. Another thing I really like about this car is how MB packaged the options. I got everything I wanted and did not have to pay for the things I did not want (e.g., sunroof), compared to BMW, say. Also, I got a pretty good deal, about 9% off MSRP at the end of January.

Thumping Noise in Front End
Started at about 5000 miles. Dealer rotated tires. Still thumping. Dealer said tires were feathered, needs alignment. Brought car in for alignment but was told car needed new front and rear differentials. Differentials installed 2 weeks later. Thumping has been significantly reduced. I asked for alignment to eliminate that as an issue. I was charged $150 for what should have been a warranty repair. I was told car needed new tires at 13,000 miles--typical of run-flats?? This problem, coupled with the screeching brake issue previously reported, has made owning this otherwise fine vehicle a headache. Update: Replaced runflats with 4 Continentals standard on Audi’s. Wow! Quieter, smoother riding, 90000 mile warranty. Bought Continental road repair kit instead of spare tire plus have M-B and AAA road service. I still think proximity warning system is very bad. Seriously thinking of Audi Q5 soon. Brake squealing backing up is coming back. I would not recommend this car to prospective buyers because of brake noise, run flat tires, and poor proximity warning.
