Fun, beautiful car, poor reliability
Great looking car, with awesome performance. Today's new cars are tough to match. Yet, horrible reliability. I owned 3 RX7's total. All needed $1000's in repairs, despite being babied and cared for. New engines, seals, turbos, cheap plastic, over heating, harsh ride, hesitations.
The 3rd Gen RX7 is a Poor Man's Ferrari
The 3rd generation Mazda's RX7 rightfully won Motor Trend's Car of the year award when it was first released 10 years ago. Its combination of acceleration, handling and styling made it the best sports car to ever come from Japan and better than many cars that cost twice or even three times as much, including Porsche. This car is a true sports car not just a sporty car and it sacrifices many comforts for performance.
Japanese Ferrari
A no-compromise sports car. Rough, noisy ride; cramped interior. Not good on long trips. Scary on wet pavement. 17 mpg. Not a practical every-day car. Find a mechanic qualified to work on the extremely complex engine; I found one at a specialty "tuner" shop. First engine died at 86,000 miles (typical); $5,000 to replace. Make sure you find out engine mileage; engine runs hot and slowly cooks itself to death. Japanese Ferrari in terms of performance and maintenance cost. Expect to pay $100/hr for maintenance. $35,000 maintenance cost over 16 years. I love this car. I will never, ever sell it.
Get One if You Can
I've had my 93 RX7 for 14 years now and agree with the others, I still get excited just looking at it. Other than replacing my engine with a JSpec 2 years ago, I've had nothing but fun and good luck with my baby. Young guys stand in awe of the car everywhere I go and it still turns heads when I drive it. Get one if you can and you'll see what all the hype is about. Thank you Mazda for building the best car ever!
ok
it is a very good car that i would recommend youi buy. its the best car i have ever driven
'93 RX-7 Twin Turbo
Great car! Amazing performance and handling. Smooth looks and it's a blast to drive. More expensive maintenance then a Honda Civic.
Race Car But High Maintenance
To completely sum up the TT Rx7: PURE sports car experience, a lot of TLC. It's rare to find a car this enjoyable, and if you take care of it it will take care of you. I bought mine a little over a year ago with a reman engine, and even though I've spent a ton on reliability parts and other repairs, nothing makes me smile more than hitting the gas in this car. If you got a little money, you're a real car guy and you don't mind learning a little about the car you drive, don't pass up the Rx7.
Rx7 - Drivers Dream
This car made me a car guy. When it works it is pretty near perfect and if you know what you are doing, it can run really well. Make sure you learn how to drive and this car will reward you like anything. Akin in its day to the exige now, it is awe inspiring and fun go-cart. Its styling is still amazing and I still have notes all the time on my car asking to sell it - even with faded paint. This car is about the spirit of driving for sure.
An Unforgettable Car
A true sports car and definitely good as a weekend driver. My father let me drive his Porsche 944 (not biased but it was a great car!) but when his brother bought his RX-7(FD3S) and I took it for a spin, it is definitely a car you will never forget. It was faster and handling was amazing due to the 50/50 weight split. There are many people who state reliability issues, but this car was meant to be treated like part of you with maintainence almost instinct(uncle's FD lasted for roughly 11 years before he did some major fixing, 4k engine rebuild, then sold it).
open track performance
My rx-7 is stock but has cold air intake quiet muffler. I had a full 3"exhaust w no cats last time I went to the track 6year old tires. Boost is 11psi. This car could lap faster than the LT-1 93,94 ZR-1 (Slightly modded to 440HP according to the owner), 5.0 mustang. The gearing in 3rd allows about 110mi/hr and I had to hit 4th on the top end of the track at Holtville. I could carry more speed coming out to the straight than all other street cars. The ZR-1 could pull slightly more during exit but I was even on the top end and I could delay braking and would shoot by at the end into the sharp turn after the straight. Braking at 115mph and handling easly makes up a tenth 0- 60 accel.
A Drivers Car
Great car. If you get one, make sure you do all the reliability mods at the least. Do more if you want more like me! =D It's a blast to drive and always gets attention. I've had someone take pictures of my car while i was driving on the highway. Like I said, it's a great car and if you are an enthusiast that likes to wrench and knows how to maintain the vehicle then you shouldn't have a problem.
Breathless
The RX-7 took my breath away when I bought it new -- it still does. The styling is classic, the perfirmance exceptional. In 50 years the lines will still be eye-catching and the performance above and beyond 99 percent of the best that car makerscan produce!
My Girl
What can I say- The car is almost perfect. The car, as designed from Mazda, is an engineering marvel. It has tremendous acceleration, mind- numbing handling and brakes that will put you through the windshield. Not to mention- it's a work of art. Still drawing much attention.
Fantastic driver's car
I bought my '93 RX-7 (since sold) in '98 in excellent condition and with few miles. It's the first car I've owned that I never got tired of driving or looking at. It's a tremendous amount of performance for the money. An ideal sports car for the driver that wants a modern car with low weight and precise handling. I also found it to be quiet and refined enough for enjoyable Interstate trips, too (as long as you don't need to take much luggage).
RX-7!
These cars are simply amazing, way ahead of their time. This car is very reliable! If you take care of it like you should it will last you a while! Do your research on this car to get to know it. They need more attention than regular cars, if you follow them you won't have any problems. I drive a 400hp RX-7 on a stock motor running 14 lbs. Brakes/handling are simply amazing! They are gas guzzlers, mine gets 10 in the city but it's always better to run a little rich on rotaries! Would not buy it if you don't know these cars! You need to use a rotary specialty shop.
For rotorheads only
A poor mans Z06. Great car. But, this car is not for the non-mechanically inclined. Working on it and learning all its quirks is half the fun of owning it.
ROCKET POWER
This car was the bomb. Great handleing, great performance, beautiful to look at. I found this beauty at a little local dealer and $9000 later drove off with the most powerful car I have ever owned. 215hp and suspension that allowed me to take it around corners over 60 like they weren't even there. Traded it for 99 Saab 93 SE convertable for my wife nine months later. Made $3000. Still kicking myself for that one....
Buy a warranty if not racing it
From the moment I saw the RX-7 I wanted it. It is truly one of the most beautiful designs to ever come out of Japan. I have owned this and the Nissan Twin Turbo 300. While the 300 is overall a better "car", the RX-7 is really more of a true sports car. Good: Styling, smooth engine, looks very expensive, interior well laid- out. Not so good: If you are considering one, and are not planning on putting on an aftermarket turbo, etc., BUY A WARRANTY. I went through three orig equip turbos but luckily had a warranty. You can buy a warranty on this ride for under $2K, and you WILL be glad you did. Other bad: drinks premium fuel like a freshman fraternity pledge at a beer keg. You WILL replace radio.
Look before you leap
Performance has its price. This car is all about performance. It is not for the faint of heart nor thin of wallet. Expect to pay for the performance. Unfortunately, most original owners were unaware of this aspect of ownership. However with proper research and the availibility of a good, local aftermarket tuner, the the 3rd Gen RX7 will take your breath away!
Runs like a cheetah! Crack of thunder!
First of all, I am a car guy. I love cars. I drove a Ferrari 430 around the track in las vegas and it was a blast! I just retired and bought a gentlemanly car in the jaguar xj8. I have a completely original rx7 with 59000 miles on it. Nothing else feels like an rx7 that I have ever driven. The twin sequential turbo rotary engine is unique. Smooth as silk. The look of the car is classic and timeless. Out of a little 1.3 liter engine you can get 600+ hp with modifications in a 2800 lb car! My son has the same car as me - 1994 red - I call them the twins - mine is original and his is heavily modified. They are a blast to drive! The cars can be a little tempramental when you start to modify things and expensive and don't know what you are doing. I would sum them up as a little like a rose - beautiful but with thorns.

Mazda should bring back the RX-7
The 1993 RX-7 is my all time favorite car - including BMW M3, Miata & Mustang. Very reliable, fast and just plain fun to drive for ten years. There have been few vehicles costing less than $65K that can come close to the RX-7 in performance.
great car!
Fantastic car. A real classic. I get offers all the time from people who want to buy it.
Very Reliable
With regular Maintaince, the car is ultra reliable. My FD3s (3rd gen RX-7) just turned 140,000 miles... the only thing wrong with it is a squeek from the rear, and fading paint... but the car has been in the desert climate in the middle of nevada for 10 years...
The Best
This car is the most exhilerating car i have ever been in. By far the best car in the world and its built by mazda!! Bring it back to the states!!!!!!!!!
Fun to Drive
I have had the RX7 for 9 years now and it has been a dream. I have driven a lot of fast and sporty cars (many in a much higher price range than the RX7), but have not found anything more fun to drive. 0-60 in 4.8 seconds. It is still as quick as the day I bought it. With care (and a good dealership) this car has been a charm. Very few problems over the years. I recently purchased a BMW 530i. I could not bring myself, however, to let go of the RX7. So, I had it tuned up for weekend fun and drives through windy country roads.
3rd Generation RX-7 Forever!!!
I have had this car for 9 years, and I look at it everyday and the car still looks stunning. It's the first car I have ever purchased that I enjoy looking at everyday. The performance is awesome. When I first pruchased the car I almost crashed it twice, the power of the car is very quick and pure. If you are a person who can not handle powerful autombiles then this car should not be your first. It also handles very well, and is very responsive. I Love the Car, and will never part with it. I just purchase a Jaguar XJR and both cars are in direct competition as far as which one will get the nice weekend joy ride, it is currently 60/40 because the Jag is newer.
get one if you can
excellent car, I recommend everyone drive one...

Sports car excelence
The car is super fast and fun to drive!!
11 YEARS - STILL NONE BETTER
The Twin-Turbo 3rd generation RX-7 is still the most fun car I've ever owned or know of on the USA market. Also bought a 2002 Corvette and kept it 6 months before selling - it's no RX-7. My RX-7 has some modifications resulting in a 2,650 lb car with 335 hp or 7.9 lb/hp. (AutoThority performance ECU; custom low- restriction airbox flowing all cold air; stainless steel downpipe; CatBack stainless steel exhaust; and a custom twin-nozzle water spray for the intercooler). It's a refined bullet. The 1993 RX-7 even after 11 years looks terrific and sophisticated. I've studied all sports cars over the years and none is better in my opinion than the RX-7.
Love at first sight
From the first day I fish-tailed out of the dealers lot, to ten years later, I have had nothing but joy driving this racer on my daily commute. The acceleration through the first three gears is intoxicating, and causes me to laugh. No other car provides this feeling, with the exception of my brothers 2003 super-charged Cobra Mustang.
I love this CAR!!!
I had two Rx7 both the "r" versions and they were excellent vehicles...I bought my first Rx7 93 R1, with 14k miles on it for $17000.00 back in 97..what a steal, then I sold it a year later, bad move...I missed that car so much that I bought another on a year later...94 R2, Unfortunately, some scumballs stole my baby 3 years later, what a loss...I want to buy another RX7 but I am fearful that it will be stolen again...to those of you who own this wonderful car, get a lo- jack installed, and keep an eye on your baby :) This is a very desirable car for theives....
RX-7 is great
Bought this car fully built with single turbo and other mods and I love it 480whp at 17psi, it's great. The feel of the car pulling is amazing. The car is firm on the road and is a blast to drive.
The RX-7 is a great car.
I've had a great experience with the car so far. It's extremely fast, handles great, stops quick, and kicks the pants off all those V8s out there.
RXHeaven
I wanted one the first time I was one in a magazine. Took me 8 more years to be able to afford/justify one. Found a low mileage multi-owner Touring model. I don't actually know of any vehicle I'd rather own, maybe a Daytona coupe.
Greatest Car Ever Made
Didn't know much about this car until my friend started talking about the car and how he was going to get one. The first time I seen this car I fell in love. He decided to sell the car because he wanted a 66 Mustang Fastback, I jumped at the chance for a car with a 99 Japanese spec motor with less than 10,000 miles. I love this car, I baby this car. It is my baby.
Awesome car
This is the best car Ive ever driven!!
Rx Heaven!
This vehicle give more driving fun for the money than virtually any other high performance sports car on the road. True, the ride is stiff, but the car handles superbly. Balance and cornering are terrific and the brakes are excellent.
Excellent car
I bought this car because of its reputation. Since buying it, I've done numerous things to it to improve reliability and performance, and every minute has been a blast. This car still gets lots of looks, and can outperform many faaaaar more expensive cars.
Not a car for the fainthearted
The car does just what a sportscar should do. Thrill. But just like that trophy girlfriend of yours---this sweetheart is HIGH MAINTENANCE. If you are looking for a car you can drive and abuse FORGET THIS ONE and leave the few that are still available to those of us who car enough to keep them pampered.
300hp under 15k
I love this car! Performance: Not reliable my eye. Almost 4 years of daily driving/racing without skipping a beat. Just do all maintenance and you're set. Styling: 10 yr old car that still turn heads.
not a toy
For the those who are into the street scene. You'll be hittin your E's on most cars out there. You'll see me in Milpitas.
Lasting fun car
I've owned a 1979, a 1987 and currently own a 1994 RX-7. I've done maintenance using dealer shop and small local sports car shops. I've not had to replace any engines although a dealer suggested I do exactly that plus the twin turbos for $11,000 20 years ago. Current mileage is 142,000, Car has all original parts. No modifications of note (antenna doesn't count). Recently had to replace hoses to engine and turbos after so many years but no major repairs have been incurred. Might go on auction in a month.

RX7
I have loved this car from the day that I bought it....
Red Batmobile
Had big problems with Flooding etc, although that would be the only problem I had with it, and it's hopeless fuel economy. I'd definitely buy one again, but only when I have big money to fix it when things go wrong. It cost me $1,200 NZ to just have the beast looked at to see what was wrong with it. Quickly brushed it off to a Car Dealer. =( Warning, do not purchase a Red Batmobile, with Black 17 inch Enkeii rims. The car was origanlly Auto, but may have had a transmission change by now. This Bat is a Lemon.
