First, I am very happy with this fun little convertible. I've had convertibles before, and really enjoyed my old Honda S2000. Currently have a Mazda CX-5. It was time for another little fun convertible and I chose the 2016 Miata GT, manual. I bought the 2016 Miata Grand Touring 2 months ago. It is so nice to drive with the top down! It is quick, fun and most importantly, a great value. There are not very many convertible out there in the sub-$35k range and I'm happy to say I got an outstanding price! I am giving the car 5 stars, however the interior is so poorly designed it is puzzling. All of the things you might want to touch are behind the seat - storage & cup holders in particular since there seems to be room forward for a small glove box. Also the tiny little storage area behind the manual shift is so thin and shallow I'm not sure why its there. It's not wide enough to fit anything other than sun glasses. Too bad it is not wide enough to fit my iPod! The entertainment system and sound is very good, especially for a convertible. I'm not sure yet whether I'll be happy with not being able to use the touch screen while in motion, and have been adjusting to not looking down at the entertainment knobs when not using the steering wheel controls. The Nav system took a bit of getting used to as is a different system than the CX-5, but is much more accurate. All in all, it is a spirited, absolutely fun car. And regardless of my interior design comments, bottom line..Can't beat the value for the price!

Don't think this little roadster won't be exciting to drive with only 155 horses under the hood. I've been driving the Grand Touring version since August and I really hate pulling it into the garage for the night. The short throw, six speed manual shift is so sweet. My daily commute is 12 miles of country roads ( speed limits 35 to 55 ) which puts the tach between 1500 & 2200. I'm getting 38 to 42 mpg, not 28 to 34 as suggested on the sticker! My only freeway run was the hour and a half drive coming home from the dealership at 80 mph. Only got 36 mpg on that trip. I'll take it back to the dealer for it's first free oil change but I definitely won't use the freeway, (no fun in that!) Coffee drinkers will be dissappointed with either of the cup holder positions as you and a passenger will be banging your knees on them (if holders are installed on either side of the front center console) and if the holders are at the rear of center console, reaching for your cup will be a little awkward. Trust me, you won't feel the need for caffeine when your slide behind the wheel! The glove compartment is between the seat backs (right above the cup holders) so don't be reaching for any items while driving. There aren't any door pockets for storage either. The trunk can hold 4 or 5 bags of groceries (but not your golf clubs). If the lack of storage positions bothers you, ... take your spouse's car but don't be surprised if they won't give your's back! Final analysis ... I've deleted my "Bucket List" ... Don't need it! I'm having too much fun driving my Miata! Updated 11/12/2016: It's been an unusually warm autumn for 2016 which has happily extended my top down driving fun! My Miata was purchased to be driven only on rare special occasions in nice weather (so I could gift it to my 4 year old grandson upon my demise which hopefully won't be for 20+ years). Unfortunately, this car has become my "preferred" choice of transportation, so I no longer see myself limiting my driving to 1,000 miles a year. My grandson will probably be inheriting a Miata with 100,000+ miles on it at the rate I've been using it! Sorry about that kiddo! Updated 11/14/2017: I took my 20116 Miata to my local Mazda dealer last fall for a 3,000 miles oil change before putting it to bed for the winter. I now have 4,777 miles and not due an oil change until 7,830 but I'll probably have them change oil again (and maybe a wash) before covering it up for the winter. This is the most fun car to drive I have ever owned. Getting in and out for retirees may require a few weeks at the gym ( concentrate on squat thrust), until you feel physically fit to enter and exit this car without the aid of your arms and hands. (OK, maybe throw some push ups in with those squat thrusts for a while.) They say people with two story houses live longer because of the extra exercise their getting going up and down steps so maybe Miata Owners live and prosper longer too! My barber's father is 96 and contributes his longevity to traveling to the basement with a shot glass for wine and going back upstairs to read a book in his rocking chair while he sips on his shot glass of wine. "Wow! A shot a day is his longevity secret" I asked? ... "No," said my barber. "He makes a hundred trips a day!" 2018 (Summer)… Traded the convertible in for a retractable roof (RF). It's less noisy when up and extends my driving season an extra month on either side of the winter months. Looks sharper too with the Targa style roof! 125lbs. heavier so mpg dropped about 2 mpg. getting 36-40 mpg now with mostly rural driving at 45-55 mph.

I owned a used 1999 Boxster that I had for 10 years and was looking for a newer 2-seat convertible replacement. i was looking at the new Boxster and Audi TT, but didn't really want to shell out $50K-$60K for a new car. And even the used ones were fairly pricey. I owned a 1992 Mazda Miata that I absolutely loved but had to trade it in when we started a family. I wasn't all that impressed with the 2015 Mazda Miata, it was nice but didn't come close to the Audi or Porsche in styling. But then I started to research the new 2016 Miata and became very interested as I saw the concepts and pricing. Was very disappointed when it didn't show up at the 2016 Baltimore Car Show. When it finally hit the showrooms in the Baltimore area I immediately went to take a look. But all the cars on the lots were pre-orders so I was unable to drive one. I really liked the looks of the car but I needed to get behind the wheel and take a spin. Finally my wife and I got to take one for a test drive. My wife is a Boxster lover so I figured it was going to be a tough sell. But we both fell in love with it immediately after test driving it. We love the look and feel of the Boxster but the Miata has far more of the "fun-factor". It's simply a blast to drive. You really feel one with the road and the acceleration is more than adequate for this little car. At 6'3" it's a little cramped for me compared to the Porsche but I don't mind at all. I find myself trying to find every excuse to drive this car. "Honey, we're out of milk. I'm driving to the store (as I just chug down a 1/2 gallon of the white stuff)". We took it on a 180 mile trip to the beach and I felt very comfortable the entire trip down and back. We bought two nice size, color matching, soft bags that held more than enough for a few days away and they fit perfectly in the trunk. More so than the Porsche, you can take the top down, keep the windows up, put on the heat and stay comfortable in the cockpit all of the way down to 45 degrees or so. We have had a very mild December in Baltimore this year so we have had plenty of top-down fun with this little car. Hands down the best 2-seat convertible on the market for the money!!!

Traded in my 2006 Corvette for a 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, so that alone should tell you something! More fun to drive, better handling, smoother manual shifting and just more exciting overall. My only issues are with some of the interior design flaws. The CD player is behind the seats rather than in the dashboard by the radio where it belongs. There is no "glove box" even though there is room for one. The GPS outlet is located near the passenger's feet where it is not accessible from the driver's seated position--not a problem if you have the navigation system in the "Club" or "GT" trims. The cup holders are located where they can not be easily reached. The sun visors are too small and do not rotate to the sides. The floor mats are very thin and not reinforced where the driver's clutch foot comes into contact with them. Despite these few interior design issues, which may seem petty to many, this car is a blast to drive and I am pleased with my purchase.

For fun per dollar, you can't beat the MX-5. My 2016 GT is my third Miata, so obviously I like them. This one is definitely the best of the bunch, but I have one gripe. It's the built-in navigation system. Actually, I'm not thrilled with the 'infotainment' system in general, but the navigation system is dreadful. It came 'standard' with the GT trim, so I gave my Garmin to my daughter. Big mistake. Unlike my old Garmin, the Mazda nav system doesn't provide live traffic alerts, the directions don't seem as accurate, the interface and display are not as intuitive, and after three years, you have to pay for map updates (with Garmin, they're free). Right now, I'm debating turning the thing off and using the big ugly screen in the center of the dash as a mounting plate for a new Garmin. If I still have the car three years from now, that's probably what I'll do rather than buy a map update. With all the attention the engineers obviously gave to making this a really impressive car, you'd think they'd have opted for a state-of-the-art nav system. UPDATE March 2017 - The Nav system remains disappointing. Entering an address using the voice interface usually fails. The infotainment system controls cannot (or at least should not) be used while driving because you would need to take your eyes off the road to view the display screen. The car still drives well and looks great, though. I did have to replace the windscreen because it was cracked on two separate occasions by a pebbles hitting it. I don't know if this was just bad luck or something to do with the shape of the car, but it seemed odd that there would be two such instances in a month. Since having it replaced, it's been fine, but I've not done much highway driving. UPDATE March 2018 - I installed the last of the free map updates to the Nav system last month. If anything, it made the thing worse. It will direct you to where you want to go, but it often chooses a roundabout way that makes little sense. (In one case, it wanted me to turn left and make a U-turn rather than turn right, where it was clearly legal to do so.) It also insists on pronouncing Tampa as TanKa. It's still a great driving car, and it's had no mechanical problems. UPDATE September 2018 - The Nav system still sucks. It will often map out an indirect route or tell you to make a turn where none is possible. My only other observation is that I probably should have got an automatic rather than the six-speed manual. The stick is fun, but I'm getting older, and an automatic is easier.

If you wanted a comfortable roadster, with great road feel, snappy handling, this is it. I am a pretty hard convertible buyer to please, I've owned a 1994 Mercury Capri (which was a stylish 40mpg fun car), a 2005 supercharged Mini Cooper S Convertible with the John Cooper Works package (hard to beat performance), and I also had a 1971 Lemans Sport convertible (classic american muscle). A co-worker brought in his 2016 black Miata Sport into work. This being his 2nd Miata (he had the NC prior) he asked, no, begged me to drive his new 2016 Miata Sport. OK, I'll admit it, I was like how could 155hp be FUN after all my MINI had 207hp and weighed in only slightly more than this! Ok, I was wrong, dead wrong. I bought my white 2016 last week. This car is a BLAST. Its not techy (although the bluetooth is flawless). Every other control is just RIGHT. Controls are non-distracting, easy to use without looking (dials with tactile feel and easy to use). But you are looking at this car for the driving experience, and for that it's just flawless. Do yourself a favor, drive one. Stop reading reviews, and just drive it.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata incredibly fun to drive. The Grand Touring trim level is nicely equipped with current technology. However, the absence of a rearview backup camera is a glaring oversight. Sitting low with high headrests, rollover bars, and windscreen, it is virtually impossible to see if anything is behind the vehicle. The cross-traffic alert system helps. But, having a visual of any obstacles (without having to put down the convertible top), would allow far more confidence when backing up.

A Great Fun Ride & Great MPG's

I purchased the manual Sport and it's Great in almost every way. A bit more interior storage would be nice but other than that, it's a car you will WANT to drive. It's fun, handles very well, and gets looks everywhere I go. The 6 speed manual is wonderful. One of the very best I've ever driven. I don't really push it and am a conservative driver and the MPG's are fantastic. Average 28.5 in town and over 40 MPG on Highway if you keep it under 65 MPH. Recent interstate highway trip of over 100 miles on rolling terrain got 42.5 MPG !! Great with the top down but loud cabin at interstate speeds with top up. Would recommend this car to anyone who wants a fun to drive, sporty convertible that gets great MPG's and makes you feel happy every time you get behind the wheel. ----- It's been a year since I purchased this car and although I only drive it 200 - 300 miles a month it still is a great car. Still wish it had more easy to get to storage but that being said I would buy it again. Only small problem is that the convertible top does not pop up as much as when it was new which makes it a little harder to get a grip to raise from the inside while seated. ZOOM ZOOM. (2 1/2 year update) At 5000 miles I'm still glad I purchased this car. Only problem is a squeaky drivers seat when I get in and out. Still fun to drive and great gas mileage. Still a fun to drive car with no problems at 3 years. No regrets. Would buy again. 4 years and only 8000 miles. The only thing I need to add is a problem with the cloth roof. There is excessive wear in 4 spots on the cloth where it rubs against a seam when the roof is down. I checked a couple of other 2016 MX 5's and they have the same problem developing. With only 8000 miles you shouldn't expect that! I have placed a couple pieces of black tape on the spots to help but I'd bet the cloth roof may have a problem in the future. No recall but from what I see there should be! Over 7 years old and only 13,000 miles. Still a Great car but wish it had a dash glove box. Box between the seats is awkward to use especially if you have a drink in the holder. Still average 36+ MPG's and low 40's on interstate trips. Not an interstate highway car but fantastic in town and on back roads.

I recently purchased a slightly used (1700 miles) MX-5 GT in Soul Red with black leather. I have owned 40+ cars in my life and the Miatas and Honda S2000s I've owned have been the most fun. The MX-5 is beautiful to look at and a hoot to drive, even with the automatic. It's hard to imagine a more fun car to drive. Before purchasing it I test drove a 2009 Porsche Cayman S and can honestly say I like driving the Miata more. It's like an eager puppy wanting you to play with it all the time. The Porsche is fairly pedestrian as were my 4 S2000s until you find a curvy road or nail the accelerator whereas the Mazda is fun at any speed on any road. This is my 3rd Miata and expect it to be as reliable as the others. I'm 6' and 210lbs. and I fit fine. It is more comfortable than all the aforementioned cars...and I'm 66 years old. If your thinking of buying a sports car you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't test drive this car. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Update 11/2/18: All is great with my MX-5. Mileage has improved to 32.5 and I've had no mechanical issues. My only complaint is the the paint on the hood chips easily. This has been an issue on the Miata forums. The thin paint coupled with the low, sloping hood are to blame.

Looking for something that will put a smile on your face? Want something to tear up the back roads on a nice sunny day? Look no further. This car will bring lots of joy, but keep you out of trouble. The GT package delivers great tech for the price if you want to make this your daily driver. The blind spot is very useful with the top up. The moving LED headlights are amazing for night driving. Let's not forget something I don't think I could live without, heated seats. These things are amazing on a slightly chilly day with the top down. Yes it's not a pratical car, but that's not the reason why you buy this. You buy this to enjoy the driving experience. The smile has not faded, nor will it. -UPDATE- Still the best.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club 2dr Convertible (2.0L 4cyl 6A)

I hit 15,000 in February '17 and I still really like it. I added NAV, which is very useful in my Miata trips with the Club. I'm still getting great fuel milage of around 33 to 34 on average. Tires that came on the car are still handling great. I also get a lot of looks too, wherever I go. Great fun in a small package, I told someone that, "you could buy a Vette, but for half the money or more you still have just of much fun with a ND!" I can't wait for a real track test this summer at the Nation Corvette Museum Track this summer, come join the fun! I just got my MX-5 on Monday (9.28.15) and I am just ecstatic about it. For the money, it just can't be beat. I got the Club edition mainly because it was available (very hard to find one at all in my area) but the Ceramic color, black side mirrors, and spoilers and gray wheels was the kicker for me. Sure the ride is a little bumpier but it will be "bomb" on track days. There are a few things I would change on the next model, like a flat bottom steering wheel (which you can buy an aftermarket one) and padding for your right knee against the the console, the CX-5 has it. The car can go, as in fast. I can't believe what they did under the hood. It is really a blast! But what this car does best...is going around corners...it can handle anything. I am 6'3" and 215 and I still fit like a glove. I don't think anyone bigger can get in or out. I seats (with red stitching) are very comfortable also. I got them adjusted all the way back and feels great. I am getting 27.5 mpg right now around the city and of course showing it off, I'm hitting the pedal...a lot. As of March 2016, I am getting over 35mpg on the hwy., using premium gas and I have gotten as much as 38mpg. 5000 mile update: I had my first oil change, I went with synthetic oil since that is what came with the vehicle, I think this is the way to go in the long run. I am getting so many looks and people coming up to the car and saying how much they like it. I never had that happen to me before. I think I have something special. I just love it. Zoom Zoom!

To me, the most obvious and appealing aspect of this car is its looks. Simply put, it is downright beautiful. It has the flowing lines, sculpted body panels, and the agressive look of a very high end exotic sports car. A buyer could be happy buying the vehicle based on looks alone. Fortunately, unlike some beauties that I have owned, ( or been married to), this car's qualities are much more than skin deep. I have the GT model, and the ride is a good balance between outstanding handling and a reasonably smooth ride. I have had it on my favorite back roads, and I can see why the MX-5 has such a loyal and enthusiastic following. The 50/ 50 weight distribution is immediately evident as is the light weight along with great suspension engineering. It is a true driver's car that will put a smile on your face. Buy it for looks, buy it for the great road vehicle that it is. Either way, you will be pleased. After 5500 miles of pleasure driving......and I do mean pleasure, I am still thrilled to own this little beauty. The more I drive it, the more things I like about it. I use it as a fair weather vehicle, and a back roads cruiser. It is comfortable, but make no mistake, I consider it a big boy, (or girl) toy. Much as I enjoy it, it would not be my only vehicle. If you want a beautiful, fun second car, I highly recommend it. UPDATE: Aug. 2019. Still performing like new. No maintenance issues whatsoever. Still stunning to look at!

The neighbor's kid named the car Bob. Machine Grey/Black Top/Tan Interior Update: 5/13/2020 - Avg. 32.4 MPG - Daily Driver - Normal manufacturer recommended maintenance Winter driving is excellent using Michelin X-Ice tires on 16" Wheels (one size down from stock) No problems to report other than crappy sunvisors. Mazda should fix them they're horrible. The little car has been to Atlanta GA, Memphis TN, Ouray CO, Santa Fe NM, Hot Springs AR, Eureka Springs AR, Madison County IA, Hermann MO, over Monarch Pass in a snowstorm, through two winters and driven daily for two years now. Nothing has broken, nothing is rattling, top is still tight and waterproof, no oil leaks, no electrical problems, and the paint is till good. I get in, start the car and drive away. I had the brakes done a couple of weeks ago and they gave me a Mazda 6 for a loaner. Beautiful car and pretty fast too but since it's just me and an occasional passenger I'll keep Bob. Nothing below 50 or 60 thousand dollars feels anywhere close to an MX-5. I still giggle every time I drive this little car. Go drive one. Oh, and if you're going to take a long trip get some earplugs this little guy can be kind of loud at 80 MPH and above. :-)

I do hope someone reads what I have to say about this sports car. Yes, it's a honest sports car, one that I thought would never live up to the word "Sports Car", but absolutely did it for me. I'm a lot older these days and not really looking for what I was interested in back in the 1960's as far as foreign sports cars go. I was young and had all the quick thinking reflexes back then. I owned 2 MGB's, a 1964 and a 1966 and ran the hell out of both of them. No, I didn't buy the 2016 Mazda Club for all that excitement, I bought the car due to the total feeling I received from a test drive I went on one day a few years ago. I made the mistake of buying the automatic transmission. Don't do that!!! If you've ever owned a real sports car in your life, get the manual trans. and you'll never regret it. I can't wait to drive the damn thing each and every day. Only GOD knows exactly how much I appreciate what Mazda has done for the sportscar world.

I tend to be have a lead foot when driving. I have driven stick shifts my whole life. The shifting is very smooth and easy. I love that this car takes regular gas (over my last convertible car that required premium). That in itself is a savings. So far, I'm averaging 34 mpg around town (my last car only got 25 around town). I wish the cup holders and cd player were easier to access, but not a deterrent to not purchase this car. This car, with the top down and the windows up, really keeps the car warm on those cooler, but sunny days. Too many kits (medical, roadside) to keep in the small trunk. The trunk is deep but not wide enough to accommodate a set of golf clubs. I still think this car is a good value for the money. Love the automatic car locks when you walk away. My last car was a 2006, so the new bells and whistles are very impressive to me. Just be aware that the passenger side has limited space, so could be tight for larger people. Update: I sold this car after a year because it is what I drive everyday....it was too small in the truck and interior for everyday use. I did love the great gas mileage, but beware I think it really is just a "weekend/fun" car.

It has been a day after I purchased 2016 MX-5 Sports manual. Driving had never been this much fun. Engine note, gear shift, acceleration , breaking, interior space is great. I am 6'2'' and I still have 2 inches above my head with roof down. I like small storage spaces here and there. Interior craftsmanship is extraordinary. As a driver, it requires extra efforts to restrain yourself from having too much fun, unless you don't mind the cost of frequent tire and break change.

I've owned several other convertibles from German makers previously and this is my first 2 seat roadster. I've a whole slew of gripes. One stands out for myself: WHY THE HELL DID I WAIT THIS LONG TO OWN ONE? Three stand out for the price paid for a fully loaded GT. This car absolutely needs (1) a heated steering wheel (2) Exterior heated mirrors (3) Seat memory. But I'm okay with living with what I have. Live in Jersey, bought a car at Russell Smith Mazda in Houston sort of on a whim and they offered excellent deal and support. Drove home that weekend with my daughter co-piloting (she's just got her license). It was the best decision and the most fun drive. The new shape is different and people turn around and ask if it's a European roadster, only to then be confused by the Mazda sign. Who cares, it's an absolute treat to drive. If I could live with all the PAIN of owning german cars, I'll live with whatever headaches this car can throw at me. I've just changed my religion.

Looking for a great convertible that makes no pretenses about being anything else? Look no further. The 2016 Mazda Miata is a rolling smile factory. Quick enough with limits low enough you can exploit them daily. Try to say that about an exotic sports car. You can't. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. It is loud. It is cramped. There is little space for anything. In the end, it doesn't matter. The car is just fun. Mazda knows convertibles. The heater can probably melt lead. The seat heat works quickly. You can drive this in any weather. It has all the convenience features you need like bluetooth and USBs but nothing is state of the art. Who cares when the top is down and you're driving briskly through curvy roads? Well done Mazda! Updated with just over 5000 miles: I've used the vehicle as a daily driver now for over six months. My only true aggravation is the lane departure warning system. It is EXTREMELY sensitive even when set to it's least sensitive setting. If you turn it off, you have to deal with an annoying light on the instrument panel. If you pack smartly with flexible luggage, you can get a fair amount in the trunk. Bluetooth works well even with the top down and driving at highway speeds. That was a little bit of a surprise. And the car is still loud. When you start it, you'll think a window is cracked. But in reality, none of this matters because the car is engaging to drive. I'd buy one again in a second! Updated with 10000 miles: Still love the car. It is still loud and impractical. No mechanical issues and gas mileage continues to be ~ 35mpg in mixed driving (and I do not baby the throttle). Aside from wishing it had a wee bit more leg room, not too much else to complain about. Buy one; you won't regret it! Updated with 15000 miles: Still love the car. I have taken several long trips to include one of 845 miles in a single day and had the top down the entire way. The car is loud in any configuration so if you're going to deal with noise go ahead and put the top down. I've also learned these are the descending configurations for optimal gas mileage; top up, top down, top down with windows up. I am taking Mazda up on the Apple Carplay retrofit (on my nickel) which will address a lot of my concerns about technology. Truth be told you don't buy this car for the technology. You buy it because it is fun to drive. Everything else after that is just icing on an already awesome cake. Stop reading! Buy one now.

I'm comparing my gorgeous new 2016 MX-5 to my 2010 MX-5. It rides more comfortably at all speeds. It is way more forgiving of early up shifts or missing downshifts, it's quieter and has much better electronics. On balance, it's an easier car to drive, but sadly, less fun. The shifter throw seems to be longer and less 'snicky', the feeling of being on rails on the turns is decidedly less pronounced. There is nearly no interior storage, no glove box, nothing on the doors. And the useless oil pressure gauge has been replaced with an electronic shift indicator that also recommends which gear you 'should' be in if you wanted to never exceed 2000 rpm. 1800 miles and 24 months later, car is still gorgeous. Improved Battery management results in instant startup after weeks in the garage. No complaints beyond the initial observations. After a summer of increased usage due to pandemic, car continues as before. No new storage has appeared. If you use the only storage available - a small compartment between the seat-backs, you will have to get out of the car to use it. When pulled over, remember to ask permission of your law enforcement officer to leave the vehicle to get to your registration and insurance.

I previously owned a 2002 Miata SE, 6 SPEED, manual transmission. It was my favorite of the 17 cars I had owned. Unfortunately, an unexpected snow storm and summer performance tires conspired to bring my baby to an early, and much lamented demise. . . Fast forward a few years, and the impending release of the 2016 Miata was creating a lot of media buzz in the automobile world. . . I never really expected to own another Miata, much less a new 2016 (We have two teenage sons, and besides, it was my wife's turn to get a new car), but circumstances arose that made it a possibility, then a reality! I am now the owner of 2016 Meteor Gray Club edition Miata MX-5, 6 speed manual transmission! I am ecstatic! The color is fantastic, the seats easily accommodate my 6'2" 230 pound frame! I have plenty of leg room. The top is a breeze, taking 3-5 seconds, up or down. It stows easily and neatly, with no need for a cover! The stereo (Bose) is quite good, and syncs up with my ipod via Bluetooth flawlessly. Even at 85 mph on the highway, is crisp and clear. the steering, as expected, is fantastic, carving the corners like a slot car! Shifting the manual transmission is a joy, and the clutch is amazingly light and easy, so driving in city traffic isn't much of a chore. . . the LED headlights and taillights are both bright, and beautiful! Such a cool looking car! . . . And like an earlier reviewer, I too live in Jacksonville, NC. However, I bought my Miata in Wilmington, NC. The dealer there was much easier to work with. . . Anyway, bottom line is, this is an amazing car, and of you enjoy driving a DRIVER'S CAR, look no further. =)

I've been graced to drive/own multiple 2-Seat sports cars in my lifetime. Back in 1987 my first car my dad gave to drive was a 1969 Austin-Healey Sprite. It was fun to drive but extremely un-reliable and finicky. It left my behind stranded several times, once I was over an hour away from home (Broken throttle cable). When the clutch finally went out in it my dad said that was the final straw and we had to salvage it. My first Mazda MX-5 Miata experience was driving a used 1995 model back in 2002. It had sport suspension (sport springs/shocks), chrome rollover hoops behind the seats, aftermarket wheels/tires. It was a hoot to test-drive but was sold before I could purchase it. Fast forward to Black Friday 2015 I finally purchased my first MX-5, a 2016 Sport 6-speed. I was the first to own one in my town I live in now, Jacksonville, N.C. It was almost 4mos before I finally spotted another 2016 MX-5 in town, and now there is about 5 more as of June 2016. Anyway - it's a blast to drive, handles pretty well even though I do plan on purchasing lowerings springs or coilovers for it in the future, gets pretty decent gas milage, the standard sound system still sounds amazing and even has speakers mounted inside the headrests. I love the L.E.D. headlights and taillights, and I get alot of looks from people even from people in alot more expensive cars than my Miata. If You have never driven one I suggest You do, it's an experience you'll never forget, I'm blessed enough to have one and as my daily driver at that. Ya'll have a nice day... UPDATE 12/7/2016 After having this MX-5 for over a year now all I can say is that's it's still just as fun, reliable, fuel efficient as it's been since day one. Again, I get constant looks/stares from other drivers when I'm in My MX-5 I even get complete strangers giving Me a thumbs up or asking "What kinda car is that?" or "That thing is a Mazda?"...LOL I've replaced the factory 16" wheels with aftermarket 17"x7" chromium black XXR530 wheels and look to purchase a RACING BEAT aftermarket exhaust system and CORKSPORT lowering springs in the future...#ZOOMZOOM UPDATE 12/8/2017 Well it's been 2yrs now I've owned my 2016 Mazda MX-5 (Purchased it on Black Friday 2015) All I can say is it's been no regrets whatsoever. The only operating costs have been fuel (of course), oil changes, and a full set of new tires (P205 Fronts, P215 Rears). Not to mention the $30-$50 Towards Premium Brand Spray Wax/Detail Spray but it's worth it to keep the beautiful paint finish looking brand new. I live for sunny days to cruise with the top down and the factory stereo (which still sounds amazing even though it's not the extra-cost BOSE system). This car makes basic trips to the store, gym, work really fun!!! UPDATE 12/8/2019 This past Black Friday marked my 4th year of ownership, time sure flies by!!! 2015's Black Friday seems like yesterday but alas, it was four years ago already. I got a scheduled oil change done the other day and the only certified Mazda technician that works on my car notice that after changing the oil that my driver's side rear tire was going to be needing to be replaced soon. I didn't believe it when the service writer told me that but he allowed back into the shop area and showed me the worn tire. It's crazy, I purchased both rear tires not even 6 months ago and yet the driver's side tire was way more worn than the passenger side tire. I immediately logged onto the internet and ordered a new tire from tirerack.com once I got back home. Update 6/9/2020 I Have Had a Set of D2 Coilovers Installed To Get Rid of The Ugly Wheel Gap (Especially Up Front) and a A.E.M. Cold Air Intake. The Usual Oil Changes, Tires, and Direct Injection Cleaning Have Also Been Performed. Also, I Finally Had To Install Rear Brake Rotors and Pads (The Factory One Finally Wore Out After 4+ yrs)...

This is the second MX-5 ND I purchased in 2016. The first one I purchased was the Sport trim level. I thought the Sport trim had everything I needed, and for the most part that's a true statement. However its biggest Achilles heel was its cloth seats. They just didn't offer enough support for my wife and I and in the end it was it's downfall. I traded it in for a Honda and to make a long story short, 40 days after I purchased it I was rear ended and the car was totalled. I decided that I really missed my MX-5 so I gave it another chance, but this time I bought the GT trim because of it's leather seats. The seats feel like they sit you a little higher and the bolstering on the cushion and backrest is far superior to the cloth seats. Plus the heated seats are amazing, with three settings. All the added features make a huge difference, giving the car a more luxurious feel ... From the auto dimming rear view mirror and high beams, the blind spot monitoring, the additional USB port, the upgraded Bose speakers and the extra speakers (which includes a sub woofer), the integrated GPS, the chrome plated control knobs, the nicer 17" alloy rims ... The GT trim is the way to go. Having said that, no matter what trim level suits you best, this car is just a blast to drive because of it's light weight and perfect 50/50 weight balance. It turns like it's on rails. It has been designed to have some body roll, but once it hits it's travel limit it's solidly planted. This is a momentum car, where you don't have to let off the gas when turning. It's a "slow car fast" vehicle, meaning that you feel like you are speeding when you are within the speed limit. It's so much fun to drive at 65 MPH and you don't need to be doing 100 MPH to feel like you are going fast. Of course it's small and there are traded offs if you decide to buy it (the trunk is small, there is limited cabin storage space, the cup holders are in an awkward spot, it's harder to get in and out of the vehicle, etc), so you have to make sure you consider your needs before buying it. I use this car as my daily driver and for me it's a perfect vehicle for that, especially since I get a combined average of 35 MPG, but I also have a truck as a second vehicle. If you are looking for a fun sports car that handles like nothing else, is reliable, efficient, relatively inexpensive to own and operate, and stylish, I can't recommend this vehicle enough .... It's just that amazing. But this vehicle isn't for everyone, and if I could only have one vehicle, I'm not so sure I would have purchased it if my situation was different.

Briefly I have owned a 2000 Miata Club... I couldn't forget that "fun" experience with this car so I traded in my 2016 Camaro SS and sold my 2002 BMW M3 and got a Soul Red 17 Miata club (non BBS/Brembo pck)... i am in absolute love with this car. Yes, it's cramped inside but everything is laid out well, infotainment system is easy to use and nothing looks tacky or ugly in the cabin. Seats can be a bit uncomfortable and the cargo space is pretty much absent. But that's not why you drive this car... you drive this car because you enjoy driving. And with the top town that can be operated within 5 seconds!!!! It's a pure pleasure to be able to drive as enthusiastically and still stay within speed limit and stay out of trouble. You can take any corner anytime with full intention, the more you drive this car the more you will fall in love with.. i recommend installing anti-roll bars for reducing notorious body roll and lower the car a bit for better handling (and looks!) Those are the only 2 mods I think will transform this car into a better handling car.

It's a fun car to drive. I'm 5' 10" and if you are taller than me, this probably isn't the car for you. It's definitely tight quarters, which is OK when the top is down, but feels a little claustrophobic with the top up. I'm still trying to learn how to manage the command control selections. It isn't logical compared to our Honda or Hyundai. The technology is pretty basic when compared with other cars we have owned in recent years. But if you are looking purely for a sports car that is fun to drive when the top is down, this is probably it. Just be aware of the limitations in the above mentioned areas and be sure to take one out for a test drive and only after you have finished driving, try to negotiate the instrument cluster and command control.

I've own alot of Mazda's. They all have been very good to me. I also own a lot of cars in general. I purchase a NEW 2017 MX5 RF for my 18 Year old son as a Graduation Gift. Yes he is spoiled. Mazda did a good job keeping true to its roots. The RF Model grabs a lot of attention. Layout is great, design is great. No way will you fit if your over 6' , or if you are on the heavy side, you will not fit. You have to be 150 - 180lbs max at around 5'8 to enjoy the comfort. For my son, its perfect. My only con, and again its nothing new about this car,......The Power. my wife has a Mazda cx5 with the 2.5 Skyactiv and it has good torque, it moves the cx5 along great. The 2.0 in the Mx5 to me feels just like my 116HP 1992 miata I had. 200HP would be PERFECT! Overall it was well engineered and boy can you push it through turns. Out of five stars, I give it four. bump up the HP and it will receive a FIVE STARS.................another bullet proof Miata/MX5 that will run for the next 20years. Oh and don't let the Dealer sucker you into a 900.00 Nav sim card, I order one from eBay @ 125.00, it works GREAT!!!

I had a Honda S2000 from 2005 through 2012 (great car) and I was looking for another fun, small, light, (fairly) comfortable convertible. The two cars that rose to the top of my wish list were the Miata (I refuse to call it an MX-5) and the Boxster. I went to the 2 day Porsche Sport driving School in Birmingham, Alabama to get a "real" test drive, mostly in a Cayman. I loved the Porsche on the track, but it seemed to be the most fun when driven FAST. Great fun on the track, but I don't spend much time there. I went to the Detroit Auto Show to see the new Miata in the flesh. I fell in love on the spot. PROS: The Miata is fun at any speed. The handling is amazing. The seats are good. The acceleration is acceptable (0-60 in 6 seconds), and the mid-range torque is much stronger than I expected. I have been averaging 36 mpg. A fully equipped GT is half the cost of a low-end Boxster. CONS: You probably won't fit if you are much over 6' tall. The trunk is small, but it does fit two 21" roller carry-on bags and some misc. "stuff" on the sides. It requires premium gas. Ummmm.... Update after 7300 miles: I took a drive from Ohio to Las Vegas. I spent 8 days to drive 3000 miles to get to Vegas, most of it on two lane roads. I then drove 2100 miles in 3 days on the Interstate to get back. The slower paced trip and back roads fit the Miata driving style better, but it was OK on the super slab. The only change to my rating is that it should get 4 or 5 stars for value. Great car, and it gets lots of compliments from onlookers.

Get off work; throw the top down; let the sunshine in; find a winding road and say "aaahhh". Having owned a Miata/MX-5 continuously since 1992 I can honestly say there is no better stress reliever. Although my new one cost twice as much as my 92 it is still an incredible bargain. The new Vette was tempting, but glad I waited. The new Miata/MX-5 gets back to it's gen 1 roots (smaller, lighter, better looking) just beautifully updated for 2016. 12/1/2016 Enjoying it even more after a year. Would like to see the shift light replaced by a digital speedometer. Time for some special editions - true red, sunset yellow and maybe that new CX-3 bright blue.

Great car and noticeable improvement over 2013 GT in ride, comfort, interior, economy, electronics and safety. Bose sound system has just enough extra oomph to make it enjoyable over the old Bose system which lacked a dedicated sub-woofer.

My prior soft top experience was with my TR8. The Miata GT is certainly more reliable, has more creature comforts, and handles better, but Grand Tourer it aint. Eight hours on the freeway in 100+ weather is not so good, I got leg cramps after 3 hours and the road noise even with the top up precluded conversation. Lack of handy cockpit storage and decent drink holders is a problem on long trips with two people, as is the lack of trunk space. That said, blasting along Angeles Crest in the early morning, or anywhere else, is guaranteed to get me smiling. I bought this car for fun not convenience, and it delivers. Follow-up = Still great fun to drive locally. I especially like the 3 second top up or down. Hit a deer but it was still drivable, so pretty stout as well! Repair cost wasn't too bad. Follow-up = Winter driving in the Dakotas turned out to be OK, the heated seats are great and the heater works well. Just dump the summer tires! Follow-up #2 = Great for long distance off-freeway travel. Even a 1200 mile trip was comfortable on blacktop, you get leg exercise and steer the car!

Shop around. I got $1550 off of the best deal I could get from Dealer #1. And, Dealer #2, who was located 60 miles from my home, delivered the car to my driveway. I traded in a 1995 Honda CRV (112,000 miles) with a broken window mechanism and a missing mirror, and got the Mazda Sport on the road (tax, title, tags, etc.) for $20,800. It's a blast to drive. Enough power for my needs and takes the corners very well, indeed.

Soft top replaced twice. Transmission replaced twice due to gears breaking (yes - they break). Both are known problems with TSB's, and the transmission failure will leave you stranded. But, the biggest is that the master brake cylinder failed in traffic. I could have been killed as the car wouldn't stop at a traffic light. The car is fun when it works, but significant problems will strand you (transmission failure) or kill you (master brake cylinder failure). All of the above occurred before 5000 miles and the car was not driven hard. Sold the car at a huge lost, but am glad to be alive.

If you are interested in a fun car to drive that gives you confidence and pure joy, this is the one for you. I found what great cars Mazda was making when we purchased a 2016 CX-5 GT. My 2009 Corvette was just not getting driven as much as it should. Kind of hard to open up 430 HP around Denver except 0-70. But this car gets used more and is more fun to drive. Great feeling of control. The GT version does not have differential rear end but I'm not cranking or sliding the corners either. I find the exterior looks great and the interior feels like high end materials. Don't miss my Vette at all, though it was pretty repair free car.

This has got to be the most UNDER-priced sports car every built! For what you pay for a LOADED , top of the line Miata- it’s half what other true sports car sell for! I smile every time I drive it, I invent a reason to drive. I feel like a kid again. Excitement👍💥 UPDATE: (a year later): NO change, still love this exciting sports car! Never been in the shop, except oil changes. Would buy it again! (😎(10,000 mi)now)

The Miata represents one of the purest new sports cars money can buy and the new one continues that tradition, but adds news levels of style and technology to the mix. This the very first convertible sports cars I have ever owned, between the constant availability of company vehicles and the fact that I metro to work, I decided I wanted a toy car as my personal ride. And boy, this new Miata fits the bill quite nicely. Everything about this car still feels like a toy and I love how it attracts stares from envious BMW and Porsche owners like nobody's business. The whole design has a new level of sleekness and masculinity that a Miata has just NEVER had. It's a huge hit for loyal Miata owners and to someone who has never owned one in his life [me]. The 200 pound weight loss is immediately apparent the moment you drive off, while the slickness and precision of the slick 6-speed manual challenges the best transmissions from Honda and Porsche. The new SkyActiv-G 2.0L 4-cyl has been tuned for greater throttle response and a meatier mid-range pull. It even sounds great and you'd never guess that the engine is shared with the lonely Mazda3 economy car. The interior has new levels of refinement and [dare I say] luxury. With an Audi like 7-inch Mazda Connect infotainment screen and a BMW like controller right below the shifter [which does get in the way at times]. I found the leather bucket seats in my GT tester to be quite supportive and comfortable. My 5'7" 160 pound frame fit perfectly in the car, but anyone over 6' may find the drivers seat doesn't move back far enough and the steering wheel still doesn't telescope. There isn't much in the way of storage space and the trunk is puny, but hey it's a sports car. The ride quality is comfortable enough to be daily driven on the crappy roads in DC and with the top up, the interior is fairly hushed by roadster standards. Overall, I've had the car barely a week and I could NOT BE HAPPIER. I look forward to my drive to work and I even find myself looking for reasons to go for a drive, and that is the whole point of owning a toy like this. Bravo Mazda, bravo.

It's a great car. Go test drive it. Here is something surprising, when using a phone through the Bluetooth system and the top is down, I can hear the other person perfectly and they can hear me with no background noise problems! Updating my review. My wife decided that she wanted the car and now I drive a 2017 Ford Escape. I understand that she really likes the MX-5. I like to picture her in my mind as Cruella de Vil driving around with the top down and laughing maniacally. It helps me to survive. But really, its all part of a larger plan :-)

As a client advisor for a European car company I'm surrounded by performance based and elegant roadster vehicles. The Miata fits in right with all of them. While it's not as power as some of its main competitors, the handling, the drive, and price of this vehicle are phenomenal. The vehicle is very user friendly, technologically advanced, and fun to handle. Very appealing while also providing and entertaining drive.

My second childhood. There is no spare tire, and it pays to shop around. The first price quoted can be improved upon in spite of what they say to begin with.

Driving everyday for 4 months now, there is a lot to love about the car, provided that you understand what you are buying--a sports car. Grading its comfortable ride, storage area, etc, makes no sense--buy an Escalade if that's what you want. I love this car, just like I did my first Miata 15 years ago before I moved to a Mustang GT. This time around, I was torn about getting a new Mustang or going back to the MIata--really different cars, so no way to compare exactly. My only gripe (which I have found from others on Miata forums) is that the left driver's seat headrest speaker buzzes, apparently due to vibration of foam in the headrest rather than the speaker itself. My dealer brushed off the complaint, stating that speakers just do that with a lot of bass (we were talking about the spoken voice on talk radio!), so I have just adjusted the fade toward the front speakers. So, I love the car, except.....

Miata CLUB Edition is a driver's car . . . not a race car. Driving one is akin to flying a WWII RAF Spitfire . . . fits like a glove, spartan to say the least . . . simply thrilling in action. The CLUB Edition . . . with sport chassis and suspension handles like a dream . . . has outstanding street acceleration . . . and . . . sips premium fuel. Purchase price is not entirely inexpensive . . . but . . . is roughly half that of the far superior Porsche 718 Boxster (or 718 Cayman) . . . and . . . maintenance and repair costs are almost nothing compared to either Porsche 718. The desirability of hyper-expensive to replace Brembo front only brakes and/or BBS forged wheels . . . for street only use . . . is a matter of personal taste and pocketbook. I will opt for the CLUB Edition for its cornering, manual transmission for fun, red for visibility, all weather mats to protect and preserve the interior, keyless entry for convenience, metal pedals for durability ... pass on Brembo/BBS.

I have the club version in Soul Red with the Brembo, BBS package. This car is everything you think it will be. It's quick but not fast. Handles very well but a little too much body roll in the curves. Brakes are excellent. Styling looks great but has too much gap above the wheels. Sound is ok for a 4 cylinder but doesn't sound like a sports car. Quality seems reasonable, but the paint chips really easily. I like the car and am enjoying it (especially on those sunny Tennessee days) but it could be so much better with a few changes.

Was looking at these for years and now the new 2016 design pushed us over the edge. More aggressive look that I think looks great. Only had it for a few weeks but loving it so far. Been years since I wanted to just go for a drive. Now I do.

The car sits low so, getting in and out of car needs to strategic when wearing a dress. Therer is very little trunk space; I was able to fit four bags(paper) of groceries in the trunk. It handles beautifully. Corners are tight and smooth and the acceleration is very quick to get to the speed you need.

Top is super easy to put up and down on a whim. Handling is un matched especially for this price. Super practical around town, i'm getting 34 mpg average. Only concerns come from fragility in some of the light weight savings. 2nd gear failure is almost guaranteed in the 2016 model year cars which should be fully covered by Mazda. More on that below. Other areas also, the price of having a very light car. The update in 2019 really addresses these issues while not adding any noticeably weight. Reminded how special these cars are for being fun, light, with a proper manual transmission. Could be a very rare thing in the near future... 5.5 years in now, and the original transmission has now failed. Could not get Mazda to do anything for me. Sad considering I bought the car knowing it had a defective transmission. Only 17k miles on it also. This is my forth Mazda in 30 years and first one to have a problem like this. Sad they would not help me with this. I dropped my rating to 4 because of this. Final note: Getting ready to sell the car now. Replacing it with a 2021. Hope they have the transmission sorted by now. The 2016 car only has 19k miles on it and it continues to be great overall.

A little rickety, but can be fun

To be clear, we are a house divided about this car. My wife loves it. We have an auto Club in all black. I find the car feels a little less than solid, especially in the front half of the vehicle. There are ways to brace it after market, but we have not done this yet. We use it as commuter car all year, which is different than those who treat it as a summer only garage queen. The mirror latch on the driver’s side broke quickly and there are two straps for the soft top that broke early on. That said, the convertible top is so easy to use. It corners well and is quick enough to be fun. The infotainment system is Mazda’s normal twitchy awfulness, but I know the new 3’s have a great system. We have had issues with rims getting bent easily, likely due to the stiff suspension of the Club. With winter tires, it is very drivable in most conditions. I would recommend Nokia’s or Pirelli’s as our Blizzaks lack nuance and feel less adept at lateral movements. It gets excellent fuel mileage for a sports car.

This is fun to drive. I'm not sure I would be comfortable driving on a long road trip but the vehicle is fun driving around town. I find myself accelerating into turns and braking hard. The performance is unbelievable. This is a homerun and the price is reasonable.

I bought this car as a fun toy, it has delivered. Totally impractical, knew that going in. I don't like the white on black instrument panel. Hard to see especially in bright sun. I've owned a Corvette, fun to drive but low quality, A hot Mustang convertible, and a Honda hatchback, an excellent car. I've had no problems with the Mazda. I rarely push it hard. It has good acceleration, a beautiful clutch and transmission, rag top works great, doesn't leak. I go top down when ever weather permits. I usually put regular gas in, it doesn't complain, great mileage. I wish it had a bit more interior storage. Has a beautiful red paint job. It is my daily drive but I also have access to a more practical car.

If you understand and accept the compromises that had to be made to make the car so fun at this price point then it will be one of your most pleasant car ownership experiences ever. Yes, it is loud and cramped compared to any normal car but it is also immensely fun. With a set of winter tires it is surprisingly good in snow (decent ground clearance and very short overhangs), gets excellent gas mileage (40+ MPG in the 9k miles I put on it) and super easy to drive thanks to excellent clutch-/shifter combo, great visibility, and light steering. I haven't had a single issue with the car so far and my first (5k) service cost less than $50.
