If you are now looking at these reviews, chances are you are considering buying a used miata. Here is my advice. Buy it! Fantastic reliability, exceptional handling, beautiful to behold. Average mpg 30. What's not to like?
Best car ever!
I bought my 01 LS Miata as my first car. Mine is an LS with a 6-speed which makes it feel even sportier! I bought it as a fun but temporary car until I was able to upgrade to something with more power, but I've fallen in love. The car is so light that when paired with my summer performance tires I can fly around corners! So far I have an aftermarket intake and exhaust and it sounds AMAZING! For those who want more power there are an endless amount of aftermarket parts for it from the intake and exhaust like I have to turbo's and even V-8's! Best car ever! NEVER getting rid of it! FYI if anyone's looking for an autocross car, look no further!
Buy 2, they're small
Like other reviewers on this post, I love this car. I had a 1991 Miata and loved it and cried the day I sold it. 16 years later I found a pristine BRG SE with a matching hardtop and bought it on the spot. The dealership had it inside with the new Miatas, so I had a chance to compare them visually. I was truly disappointed with the 2009 Miata's interior..cheap plastic and the long strip of fake chrome over the glove box didn't ring my bell. I compared it to my 2001 interior, nothing can touch the beauty of the wood steering wheel, gear shift knob and tan leather seats. Handling is superb and the 6 speed tranny is a joy to shift (Amsoil gear shift oil eliminated my 3rd gear crunch.)
My first vehicle purchased
I flew across country (MN to AZ) to pick up my silver 2001 LS with 17" rims, chrome style bar and leather interior, and most importantly a rust free body. I drove it the 2,000 miles home in February with no issues and it has been a champ back here since then. I had been looking at something fun to drive that didn't need to be that practical since I have a '97 Buick with 200k+ miles that's still running strong to fill in as my winter car. This Miata will take the pressure off the Regal and is WAY more fun to drive. I regularly go on rides purely for pleasure, and blasting the tunes from an iPod through a tape adapter works just fine for those jaunts.
Best 2 seater for the money
I've owned my 2001 since 2015 and still loving it. Trunk is larger than it looks fitting my golf bag or a decent Costo/Grocery trip. Power and suspension is balanced so any slightly curvy road is great fun - even at a "little" over the speed limit. There are plenty of these around. Search the forums for a list of check points. If you're not afraid of a wrench, you can do almost everything yourself. I got it at 145Kmi w/ not rust but some neglect. Projects done myself with the help of youtube were - new aftermarket headlights (sold original on ebay for the same price as aftermarkets); master/slave/hose clutch cylinder replacement, trans/diff/shift oil changes, new rubber shift boots, pulled carpet and cleaned; Costco seat covers; cleaned/painted dirty interior trim, top, wheels and side mirrors black; intake manifold removal/cleaning/reinstall (cleared P code); alternator replacement - all under $1K total. I don't have a lift so I did have the clutch replaced by a local Miata repair shop. Great car! 11/2017 - still going great. Highly recommend. 12/2017 - running like a top. Only oil changes. 165K mi now

BEST CAR EVER!
I bought my 2001 MX5 brand new. I live in San Francisco bay area and drive both city & fwy. I have not spent hardly any money in maintenance, just changed the oil, replace the battery (2x since 2001 to 2017), bought new tires and replaced the burnt out lights myself with a $9 bulb from the auto store. In 2016 I had MY VERY FIRST tune up and they replaced the spark plugs and did some other stuff. The bill was $250. Some crazy person damaged the convertible top so it was replaced by the insurance company 8 years into the cars life. I upgraded to used leather seats $300 and replaced the car mats to heavy duty mats I came across at Costco $30. With all convertibles it is not a matter of will they leak in the rain, it's a matter of "when". Mine started leaking in 2015. Even with the rubber weather stripping replaced $100 (parts and labor) it still leaks a tiny bit. I LOVE this car. The mileage is excessively good and it is a super fun car to drive. THE BACK END does spin a bit in the rain so don't punch it when you're turning a corner. I have also driven this car in a light snow storm in Tahoe and the aerodynamic of the top down at 55mph in a snow storm creates a perfect experience of no snow in the car! Super cool sleigh ride up interstate 80!! The car has no internet frills but if you want a fantastically reliable car that is fun to drive this is your car.

Fun going Topless
After looking at Miata, S2000, and the MR2. I finally decided if I could find a 2001 Miata SE (British Racing Green) for a fair amount I would buy on as a fun run about car. We have had the car for nearly a year and it has exceeded all expectations.
Still Smiling
This is one fun car. Looked for several months before purchasing a used Special Edition with 53K miles. This is one of many Mazda's I have purchased. Great handling, good brakes, this car begs to be driven enthusiastically. The six speed is great, shifts smoothly and precisely and keeps the rpm's below 4000 at 75 mph. I will go out of my way to take a twisty set of roads, this car is easy to push hard in the corners. It takes a set and with smooth power application will drift progressively, and when pushed hard will break lose in the rear. If this Mazda lasts as long as my 91 truck I will be smiling for years to come.
MX 5 Owner for more than a decade
Reliable, simple, easy to work on, well engineered, not costly to fix, blast driving slow, blast driving like a go-cart, simple top without expensive hydraulics that go bad. Great 2nd or 3rd car to run around in. Great roadster. Looks great, wash car in 10-minutes due to size, park anywhere, top down in 40 degree weather because the heater is super hot. I have owned 30 cars and this was my most favorite to drive!

The best car I have ever purchased
I’ll keep this very simple. It handles very good, the seats are not that comfy or supportive, especially if you’re a bigger person. The gas mileage is decent. If you drive it like a normal person you get okay gas mileage. It’s a slow car that feels fast. If you don’t know what I am taking about, drive a Miata and you’ll know. You can drive with the top down in 40-50 degree weather, just blast the heat. I absolutely love this car. It’s my daily driver until winter. Getting this car was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I love my Miata
I love my Miata. Pros: 1.) It handles like a dream and is a lot of fun to drive. 2.) You can beat most cars off the line. 3.) It looks great. 4.) Reliable 5.) Good gas mileage (if you choose not to have fun.) Cons: 1.) No storage space. 2.) Loud road noise. I love my Miata.
Dreams Come True!
I fell in love with the first Miata in 1990. I was a senior in high school at the time and could not afford to buy it. Well 11 years later, i finally did it. I have a 2001 sunlight silver LS model with the six speed transmission. what a great car. I love it. never think you cannot fit in it(I am five foot eleven and weigh 250 pounds) and yes a golf bag with clubs fits in the trunk.
The most fun for your dollar!!
For my money, there is no more fun per dollar available on earth than the Mazda Miata. I think the best part about this car is it's total IMpracticality! With too few horses to get into real trouble, you acutally get to work the gears on this car, and it handles superbly.
I love this car!
I had never considered a car to be fun before. This car is amazing. Having a bad day? Just climb in, drop the top and all is right with the world.
It's a beautiful thing....
This is a great little car! In a year of ownership I've had no service problems whatsoever. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Easy to take care of; top is a breeze to put up and down; and it has way more trunk room than the Mazda MR2. Don't drive it in snowy conditions, though. Back end won't stay still. Very scary! Best to have a backup car for that.
It's all good !
The most fun you can have with your pants on ....
2001 Miata SE
A wonderful car that continues to bring a smile to my face, and encourages the development of good driving skills. Plenty of power for normal driving, a responsive and fun ride at highway speeds. (Under 40 mph, in town, nothing to brag about.) Stylish exterior, well designed and thought out interior, and high quality, both cosmetically and mechanically make this car a winner. The trunk holds more than its appearance conveys, and so if you can accept this car for what it is (2 seater, firm ride, limited cargo room, I believe that you will be quite pleased, and experience the same pride of ownership that I have.
My amazing Miata!
Great car. A little on the small side. Awesome handling!

Fun Car!
Wow! This car is great. This is the first Miata that I've owned so the experience is new for this brand. I have owned several other rag-tops, but none as fun as the Miata. It is a blast to just let the top down and drive anywhere. Took it on a long trip (800 miles each way) to Key West. No problem on the highway. Cruised just fine.
What a car!
It is everything I've heard it was. The shifting is pure fun...lots of leg room, even with my 6'2" frame...and the styling is a real eye catcher. I only wished I'd bought one 10 years earier!
That which we call a Rose.
The Miata is one of those cars people just awe over, you can't help but name it, you want to call 'her' something. The sleek curves give off a sense of class, while the small, but cocky stance says "I want to play". The Miata, in my opinion, is underrated, it has enough power for most people, and enough aftermarket support for the rest of us. A light-weight rear-wheel drive car is just one of those things that any generation could admire. Cruising the interstate with the top down, wind blowing.. You can't resist but feel that you're free.
BEST SPORTS CAR
This car is so much fun to drive. Red Exterior with Tan Interior (leather) combination is fabulous. At red lights people always remark how Great Looking the car is. (I do keep it in fantastic condition) Anyway, if you want a roadster with a low sticker price THIS IS THE ONE. You won't regret it.
It's Fun
I thought after many years of driving sedans, it was about time to have some fun so on my 65th birthday I bought a red Miata and it changed my driving experiences. This car makes you want to drive, especially with its "Zoom- Zoom" power and fast gear shifting. Hard to sane and legal.
Zoom- Zoom
This car is the greatest little car for trips to the beach the store or to work it brings back the fun in driving. Have had NO problems what so ever just turn the key and go. The handling right of the show room floor was great when I added four sticky tires the handling was like it was on rails. Needs a better sound system with top down needs an amp or more output. But the care is just plane fun.
2001 Mazda MX5 LS
One of the best, if not the best, cars I have ever owned. Bought in California and driven home to Texas and averaged over 30 MPG at an average speed of about 95 MPH. Most fun of any vehicle I ever drove and is more reliable than any I have owned which have included several sports cars. The only drawback to certain 2001 MX5s is a very slight clutch shudder when first driven on certain mornings. This is no real problem because it disappears after a couple of starts. I have tangled with BMW Z3s, among others, and blew them off in both high speed acceleration and cornering. If I didn't like this one so much I would buy another at the drop of a hat.
Expensive Experiment
Fun while it lasted. Good "summer car" value for its price range, if you plan on keeping it for four or more years. SEVERE depreciation in first two years. In fact, the local dealer refused to take mine in on trade for an SUV because they have so much trouble getting rid of used Miatas. Mine's for sale. Car also has annoying, minor mechanical problems: Clutch shudder; valve ping; crunchy shifting; hard to keep aligned; the worst paint job I've seen on any car; ridiculous cupholders.
MY FAVORITE CAR
Wonderful car, very few problems, drives and rides exceptionally well for a sports car, especially one with 45 series tires. New VVT helps with power delivery.
2001 Black Miata LS
I have owned this vehicle for two years. It has been reliable and great to drive. I also have the factory hardtop which seals the car up for winter and changes the look of the car.

FUN TO DRIVE GREAT CAR FOR THE MONEY
FUN!
I got my Miata after wanting to get a roadster again. I had Jags, MG's and Triumphs back in 1966-1967. I have not been disappointed. Still look back when I park it! What fun!!!!!
Great fun car
I have owned this Miata since it had 3000 miles. I drive about 6k per year on and around the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is a second car which is driven only in spring-fall. Putting the top down takes about 20 seconds and the car is simple to operate and fun to drive.
BRG Miata
With a few modificatons to the engine and exhaust, this TRUE Sports car can scoot. Have tried to break it loose in corners but the handling is super for a stock roadster. Think I see a 2006 on the horizon, this is one awesome vehicle.
Mazda Miata 5 spd, leather inter, red convertible
I love my new car!! Fits like a glove! Her name is 'candy' for the candy apple red color!

Great little car!
I started out just looking for something cheap to commute in on the mountainous roads where I live. I decided to go ahead and get a truly fun car, which meant rear wheel drive, which lead to the Miata. It's a fantastic car, well built with the goal in mind of emulating a British roadster-one that runs. Not much power but a lively, fun engine mated to a great gearbox and chassis. It has just enough torque to let you loaf along if you want, but loves to rev. Fantastic handling and feedback from all the controls. Very composed even if you push it hard. It's a joy with the top down! Solid design and extremely reliable. I got this one with 78,000 miles on it and expect to drive it for years.
Our fun car
Always read about how fun Miatas were to drive, so just bought a 7 year old 01. People think it is brand new until they see 106K on the odometer. We drive Lexus for comfort but the Miata is just plain fun. Until we add on to the garage the "comfort car" will sit outside. My wife is into this as much as I am, even planning a long road trip just to spend more time in it.

very fun as a second car
Wheeeeeee
No excuses, just poain fun. would like 15-20 more horsepower, but at what expense?
fun toy
I've had this car for 3 years since it was new and it is the best toy I ever owned. Close to worthless for long interstate drives since it's noisy and uncomfy for long sitting periods. However for pure fun on curvy mountain roads with the top down, it can make your day. No complaints whatsoever, but the car is not a BMW. I think of it as a go kart with a great sound system. I would not have this as my only car; can't even use it to go grocery shopping and forget out of town for 2 trips with the limited luggage space unless you pack lightly. But it is a great car for what it is.
Miata
A great and fun car. After I bought this I sold my motorcycle.
Great fun with many aftermarket add-ons.
I have had this car for about ten months, and it has been a great investment. With the addition of roll bars, 17 inch wheels, supercharger, and all new audio, this car is amazing. It handles like a champ with a great amount of power. You cannot beat this vehicle in price versus quality and performane. I have yet to have any issues with reliablity. It has not yet seen the inside of the dealership. With many Miata clubs and many aftermarket components, this car has been great fun and entertainment. I would highly recommend over the MR2 and the S2000.
One of the best cars in the world
Looks, fun, luxary, quality and performance all in one. There is no better bang for your buck in the world. I got this car used, but it's like brand new. From the time you rest your rump on the leather seats, to the time you hear the solid thus of closing the door, and the ever so sweet pur of the stock high performance exhaust, you are taken by the fact that you only spent 15k on a car that looks and feels nicer then most BMW's.
most fun to drive
my first miata was a 1991, and drove it for 118,000 miles and sold 11 years later for $4500 so my new 2001 LS with all the power opstions, I may keep this one a bit longer.
This one's a keeper!
I owned a `92 Miata a couple years ago, sold that and couldn't take not having a Miata anymore. Bought a Crystal Blue 2001 LS with 6-spd, ABS, and Sport pkg. The refinement over the early cars and even the `99-`00 cars is amazing, very smooth, great craftsmanship (for a Japanese car of this price), for a 3-yr-old car, looks like I paid $30k+ for it. Very predictable, confident handling, outhandles cars twice its price, makes great sounds, easy to work on, the Miata community is a great one, very friendly and fun! Considered a BMW 3- series because it was more practical, inline-6 torque, German design and engineering, but repairs and maintenance are expensive. Don't regret my purchase at all!
2001 LS....
Overall this car has been what I expected. Lots of fun to drive. Not alot of money. Not too hard on the gas. A few problems: My clutch has deteriorated immensly. Shudders and stutters on Moderate effort starts in first few miles. Worse on wet or humid days, going to persue warranty. Some of door trim has come loose. Safety catch on roof latch stopped catching after 6 months(roof still stays closed but could accidently release). Factory tires lasted 25,000 miles (Bridgstone Turanzas). Seats are too soft in the lumbar area. Emergency Brake handle is a serious knee space intruder.
The Amazing Miata
After four years I have to say I still love my Miata. My mission the day I bought it was to buy a WRX. However coming out of a convertible I was not prepared to totally forego an opening top. The WRX at that time did not have an available sunroof. The other problem, they were so hot all I could find were automatics! Just down the street was a Mazda dealership and I thought why not, the price was right. My test drive sold me 100%! I scared the salesman so that was a bonus. As a former policeman I drive like one ;) The handling is simply spot on superb. Though the stock Bridgestones were awful under 50 degrees. I put on GForce T/As and love them. One request - a bit more HP.
Driving those Hills in San Francisco
I bought my car on Halloween Night! 2nd Miata (traded in 1993)and was very pleased on the upgrades over the years...Very comfortable, but having had MG's and an old Miata felt a lot of the rough/bumpy of the old Sports car was missing...I enjoyed that kind a feeling...The Mazda rumble is missing. More like a whine! Car is more like a cushy compact with the top down. Handles beautifully. Wont win any speed races with the power.
What a great car!
My Mazda Miata MX-5 fulfilled everything I wanted in a convertible - sleek, sexy and sporty. It's a blast to drive. I can't wait to until 5pm when I can leave work and have some real fun. Handles wonderfully, stops on a dime and I'm usually the first off the line from a red light.
Life after 50, it doesn't get any better
Last July, after my 1st Miata, (a '94 classic red model) was "totalled" I purchased a Crystal Blue LS number. I have been plesantly surprised by the improvements and feature upgrades over the years. This is my second Miata and definitely not my last, how can you go wrong for under $25K? Living in MA, its striclty a summer car. Forget trying to drive it in snow and if possible, avoid the highway (too many Rs @80MPH).
No snow bunny
Love this car, but have to give it up. Do not, DO NOT take your Miata out in the snow! Slides on straight-aways, even with concrete blocks in the trunck! If this will be your only car and you live North of the Mason-Dixon, buy something else. I'll miss it in the summer.
EVERYONE smiles at this car
Bought this as a second car -- midlife fantasy, tantalized me from its spot on the car lot. Got great price on 1-year old model with only 8,200 miles on it. I smile when I drive it, and everyone else smiles back. Corners like crazy and maneuvers with confidence. White paint chips easily, and while my car has sport suspension, alarm, gorgeous wheels and stainless racing exhaust, it really needs cruise control; leg position on accelerator gets VERY uncomfortable on the highway. Passenger seat also rattles on bumps when empty and black cloth seats always look "linty."
