It is so much fun to drive, it makes you smile eve

This car surprised me from day one. Three years later, I still smile each and every time I get behind the wheel. Even though the power is not impressive on paper, you never feel like you’re driving and under powered sports car. This car is preppy and you are so close to the road it feels like a go cart. One drive and you’ll be hooked. I never imagined a car in this price point would be so much fun. I have had many cars of the years, including sports cars and off road trucks. This car is nothing like the rest. I would like to see the infotainment updated add a little more creature comforts like cooled seats. I can only imagine how little this car would be with a turbo. At the moment, there’s just enough power not to get you in trouble. The Brembo breaks, Recaro seats and BBS wheels are worth the premium. Even though the handling is nimble, I replaced the Bilstien strut package with an aftermarket HRS adjustable coil over system. It lowers the ride, improves the handling even more, if that’s possible. Other than feeling a bit cramped, there are no disappointments with the ride.

Having owned this fabulous little two-seater for three weeks I already encountered numerous compliments in parking lots and gas stations. Considering how loaded this coupe is (including rain-sensing wipers, sign recognition, heated seats, dimming rear mirrors, automatic high beam, Sport mode, etc.) with respect to price, this is by far the most affordable hard-top convertible on the market. Handling is excellent, the automatic transmission features paddles and stick-shift options, breaking is superb. I suppose an acceleration can be a bit more robust, but it is still respectable. Hard top folds in about 10 seconds. Yes, this little two-seater is a bit noisy, but I can still listen to music on the highway with roof open. It’s an awfully fun car to drive and it actually looks stunning! On con side: storage space is close to non-existent, including lack of true glove compartment. I am 6 feet tall and I barely fit inside without hitting my head on the roof. Seat and stirring wheel are very limited in adjustment. The trunk might fit a carry-on suitcase but not much else. Mazda Connect system is a bit awkward to use and the navigation screen is so small I have to wear glasses to see small print. The speed doesn’t appear as a number: you actually need to look at speedometer. There’s a very annoying blind spot on a driver’s side even when you turn your head (but the blind-spot detector works well to help with this). Perhaps the most bizarre design flaw (so unlike Japanese “common sense” approach) is the fact that once the roof is raised there remains an open gap in both driver and passenger windows which need to be closed manually!! Very strange! The dealership recommended premium gas (a minus!), but the owner’s manual says you can use regular gasoline resulting in a bit more engine knock and slightly decreased performance. The buyer also gets a cell phone app that allows you to open, close and remotely start the car; it also provides car’s location, diagnostics, road assistance, etc. I had seamless connection to Android Auto (the only car so far that I had no issues with this app!). Overall, this is probably not the car you would use to go on vacation or leave at the airport parking lot. It is a fun car to drive and enjoy on a nice summer drive. No other convertible comes close to offering standard features for this price. Add to this Mazda reliability and ease of servicing and you end up with a top-dollar deal.

As Promised

After reading and watching many videos on the Miata, I pulled the trigger. The Miata is everything you read and watch about it. Their words are better than mine, so I only have a few observations. If you have never owned a small lightweight roadster, the Miata is a blast from the past. You really feel like your driving a car from times past. I've owned many of the new muscle cars (Camaro SS, Shelby GT350, Challenger V8) and besides their power they were nothing like their 60s,70s counterparts. The Miata really makes you feel like your driving something unique, something old school and fun. This (retro) element adds to my enjoyment beyond its playful, fun to drive characteristics. This (unique feel) is what makes me enjoy driving the Miata to the store as much as I do driving it on a twisty road. In all of my research, I did not feel this element was elaborated on enough. Other than that the Miata is everything you read and watch about. This is not a car that is being overhyped by the media. The Miata is as Promised, and I have the automatic lol.
