Best Car for the Money!

I have owned several different sport cars, and the most impressive car in my recent memory was still the 02 BMW 330C. However, after owning this car for two weeks now, I can confirm that this is a better car and much more affordable than the 3-series. I tested the new Subaru WRX in the morning and planned a backup with the MS3. Surprisingly, the MS3 became the target purchase right after I drove it. The main reason I don’t like the WRX is that the gear box is little bit shaky, while the MS3’s box is rock solid. In addition, the MS3 is much roomier than the WRX. Its back seat can fit two child seats comfortably! Thanks to MS3, a family man can still drive a high performance sport car now! Ano

2011 Speed 3, Initial Review

Traded in '09 GT hatch,(2.3, 5M),a very good car. Had the new Speed 3 for just over a week, 1100 miles with a trip from mid MI to the UP. Car feels more substantial, much stronger and more firmly planted than the regular Mazda 3. Very good brakes and steering. Shifter better than I expected. The Tech Package and new shift pattern have me on a learning curve. Good driver's seat. Power in 1st and 2nd is scary, torque steer, but manageable. In third and up, power flow is great. Even in 6th, power is right there for passing at highway speeds. Read out showed 29.4mpg for the trip, paper/pencil 28.9. Great for a new, tight power train. Nice touring car for 1 or 2. Can't be beat for the price!

All this for less than $25,000?!?!?!

Just picked up Black Mica Speed3 with tech package 3 days ago. Paid EXACTLY the price edmunds TMV said I should including Mazda's current $500 incentive. Under $25,000 including tax (traded in a vehicle to offset costs). About 10 seconds into the ride home and I was never quite as confident of making a good decision when purchasing a new car. You literally cannot stop your self from having fun driving this car. So much value for the price. Once on the highway, I could obtain 30-31 mpg running 60mph in 6th. 2 car seats fit ok in the back. I have to slide my seat forward just a bit when my son rides with me. I wouldn't buy this as your primary family car. Overall VERY pleased. Zoom-Zoom.

To start off, I've only owned this car for 4 days now. I was a very proud rx8 owner and loved every bit of it, except for the gas mileage. This car, has everything that you want. Perfect handling, the right amount of power, it's very practical and to be honest, economical. I know people will be like "economical? it only gets 18mpg!" Yeah, when you're flooring it everywhere. When I drove home from the dealership I was about 50 miles away from home. I drove it like a grandma and averaged 34mpg. So if you really want to economical, this car can definitely do it. I can't talk on the reliability as I just got the car, but I still rated it a 5 because I love everything about this car.

I have owned my speed3 for almost 2 years now. In that time I have put 54,000 miles on it. I can say that it's a fun car, It has a good amount of cargo space, and it roadtrips well. The fuel economy isn't bad, but the read out is a bit optimistic. I use the car for family roadtrips (500mi one way my wife and I), work (multiple 500 mi days per week), and even the ocasional track day. Currently at 77k and really nothing unexpected as far as maintence goes. Spirited public roads driving the speed3 is as much fun as the GTO and 540i M-sport I have owned previously. It does have understeer at the limit, and that does sap a bit of track day fun.

I have had my Mazdaspeed 3 for 3 months and 3700 miles now and have noticed things I love and things that need improvement. The car handles very well, but may be a bit harsh for some. The interior is very nicely laid out (love the blue accent lighting). The exterior styling can take a bit getting used to. I bought mine in Black, so the "happy face" is not noticeable at all. I drive very conservatively so I have been averaging around 23-24 mpg with a 60-40 mix of city and highway driving. Overall a nice car and a great value, but Mazda needs to work on the clutch on these cars. My clutch is taking away from the fun of driving it, which is a big reason why people buy these cars.

My 2011 MS3 is now 3 weeks old with roughly 1200 miles on it. Just about every review on this site is dead on with observations of handling and power. Mine is in Velocity Red and turns a few heads in my neighborhood as well. Styling is subjective but it's really hard to argue the price-to-performance ratio. Also, I read a lot of criticism about the small multi-function nav screen but I have found mine to be of high quality, great resolution, and it gets me where I want to go without fuss.

I have owned only Taurus SHO's for the past 17 years - all manuals. My last one just turned 190k as I went researching for a honorable replacement. It surely wouldn't be the new SHO as it was released w/o a stick and way too much $$$. As I went to different review and "best of" sites the MS3 was always ending up in the top two spots. Anyway ended up test driving the WRX (not as refined inside + more $) and the GTI (more $ and slower than the MS3). Since I have owned it (the MS3) I have to admit it just gets better every time I drive it - even with that goofy smile in the front. I did have to get used to a turbocharged car as far as shift points and turbo lag but all are quite manageable.

I bought the MazdaSpeed 3 to provide some driving fun. My other car is an Escalade, which is wonderful for long distance trips, but lacks soul. No such problem with the MazdaSpeed 3 - I have had an almost continuous smile on my face since picking it up. I can't get over the combination of handling, performance, comfort and sheer fun in a car costing $25,000. I've had Saab 9000 turbos, a BMW 735iSE, Toyota MR2s and many other great cars but none was nearly as much fun as this. Brilliant.

I've owned the car for about 3 weeks now and it is an absolute pleasure to drive. I was planning on waiting for the new STi, however I'm glad I decided on the MS3 for both practicality and affordability. Plenty fast for a mid-thirty year old, gas mileage is a solid 26 mpg (I do a lot of city driving), and it handles like it's on rails through the curves. Motor Trend just did a comparison between the MS3, the wrx, gti and ralliart, and out of all of them, this is the "point and shoot racer" that simply feels much more "dialed in". Believe me, they're spot on. I simply can't stop grinning.

Must Read for Speed3 Owners!

I noticed a black soot material on my tailpipes (which I've since learned is normal for turbocharged cars) but I heard that previous models had issues w/turbo smoking (smoke coming from tailpipe at idle/all engine speeds) & I thought this might be the onset. Videos are online if u Google. Mazda allegedly fixed this in 2010 but there's a "mystery" Tech Service Bulletin (TSB)for service depts to switch owners to 5W-40 synthetic vs. std 5W-30 (what the filler cap & manual says). TSB doesn't apply to 2010 models. My dealer couldn't even find the TSB in their system! Question service depts b/c Mazda N. America doesn't endorse synthetic oil or 5W- 40! Could void warranty b/c manual says 5w-30 oil.

I owned this car for about a year and had absolutely no issues with it. Added on a couple of goodies (Corksport intake and cat delete, Cobb Accessport) which significantly increased the power without sacrificing MPG or driveability. For the $$ the MS3 really is the performance bargain of the century. Great build quality and reliability, handling, power, it's all there. Don't listen to the weenies who complain about torque steer, it's really not bad or difficult to control. Wheels spinning? STOP PUSHING THE GAS PEDAL. It's not complicated. The only reason I got rid of the car was the ride comfort. We have horrible roads in Ohio with giant potholes and lots of speed bumps so it was just a pain

You get 280 lb/ft at from a car that costs 23k to start. Mazda has made a true winner here and the car has a lot of plus points. Its comes loaded in standard form and Interior is very well laid out for a compact with true seating for 5. The handling is very sharp and the ride is on the stiff side. The only downside is the exterior styling which doesn't cut it for some buyers. 6 speed is precise and its never hard to find the right gear. I think its a great platform to improve on and sort out all the quirks for the next gen. The new ECU is not as easy to mod as prior years even though the motor is the same. I would give the speed 3 a serious look before pulling the plug on any other hatchback

Black smoke on SPEED3

I bought this attractive, powerful turbo in early August. This was my first Mazda. Within a week, I noticed black carbon build up on entire rear of the car. The exhaust was covered in black soot. The engine performance seemed fine, but I noticed even after warming up, black smoke continued. I am very gentle with the car. I've owned 7 cars in my 24 driving yrs & I've never seen this. Dealership agreed when I returned to have them look at it. After diagnostic testing, they confirmed w/ USA Mazda that the car was operating in normal conditions. Mazda's customer hot line and technical service reps said the same. I'm looking to return this car. I 'd believe it's normal if it was diesel.

Best deal going for the $! Paid $21,900 w/Toyota owner loyalty rebate. Didn't get the tech package but the audio w/std system is great! Single CD is annoying, but BT is awesome. Has built in MP3 plug w/power in center console. Impressed with std opts (dual zone auto A/C, info center w/trip computer, steering wheel cntrls, stainless steel ft pdls). Car is FAST but well behaved on the roads. The turbo kicks in smoothly w/no lag. Downshifts on the highway N/A for passing. Just step on the gas & let the turbo work for you! Tires are VERY loud on the road but grip well in rain. Lights work well at night w/fog opt. Econ-75 mph=27-32 mpg depending upon gradient. Sports car, folks! Not a luxury car.

If I could go back I would buy it all over again. This is a very responsive & quick car with lots of features to make your ride & needs feel beyond met. I am still finding new features that make my ride exciting, I enjoy the blue tooth I can listen to my Iphone wireless & answer calls while shifting hands free. The Bose system is awesome, my previous car had subs & I don't miss them at all. The blue lights underneath the dash and on the stick are a fun feature for a night drive out on the town. I feel safe in this car without the feel of being in a mini van. The stock dual exhaust sounds great, like a race car. This is definitely a luxury car that is affordable and fun to drive. Zoom zoom!

As a still very active adult and recent dog grampa I found my 350Z satisfied all driving urges but I couldn't haul my mountain bike or my dog! I had to have a more practical everyday hauler plus the performance and handling I have always craved. I knew the MazdaSpeed3 had scored very highly in all media tests for the previous 3 years so when an all new 2010 model was announced I began to follow the reports and searched out the internet for spy shots and videos. Long story shot?...I bought the first one in town the day after it arrived! Even in town the 6 speed is a dream to use, the brakes are very impressive and the torque steer some complain about just reminds me to mind the car's power.

Traded in my 97 Miata for this MS3 Black Baby...was a bitter sweet trade as the roadster gave years of fun, but wife would not drive it so... Stock MS3 is all that is needed to be sure, but if you need all the "gadgets" go for it in the "Tech Package"! Power, Style, and Driveability in one package, no more need be said other than price is outstanding for what is provided. Compared and test drove regular MAzda 3 and similar vehicles and decided to go for it without hesitation.

Got a 2010 MS3 in Black Mica w/tech package at $200 over invoice($24,297).. Great freakin deal!! Love everything about the car.. Wasn't a huge fan about the front grill design, but in black you really cant tell at all.. I plan to upgrade the grill eventually.. Ride comfort is surprisingly good for a sports car.. This thing handles like no other fwd car ive driven.. Feels completely planted and exudes confidence in the corners.. Love the subtle styling cues as well.. People have no idea that this car is fast, unless youre a car person.. Very under the radar.. Bose sound system is excellent and the keyless start will never get old.. Plan to add MS CAI and exhaust once they come out.. FUN FUN!!

This car was a blast from the get go and I cant even red line it yet. The Touqe starts low and the acceleration is impressive for its size. After test driving the evo I actually choose this model. It felt more stable and was working very well. Smooth shifting. Wish it had a moon roof but I can deal. The interior set up with out the Navi is the way to go. Just adding the satellite pkg later. Plenty of room for you and your friend. 10* better then the WRX, GTI, and RalliArt lancers. The rear of the vehicle is the only part I am a little curious about. I don't prefer the bug look but it works with the overall feel of the vehicle. Test drive one and you will not be disappointed.

700 Letters can't do this little red rocket justice but I'll try! It handles like it's on proverbial rails. The steering is so tight it's easy to oversteer for the first few trips out. The ride is as it should be fun and tight. You do feel and hear the road more than a lot of cars, but that's the way things are when you're riding in a Road Race car suspension. This Zoom Zoom straightens out the highway with flat corners and extremely tight steering. The engine revs like a sewing machine but not like Grandmas!! The Turbo brings it to life like no 4 cylinder I've ever driven. RPMs are quick and effortless. The interior is comfortable with everything within reach and it seats "5"

A fun car, with performance and an appealing appearance, has always been important to me. Sometimes there have been limitations that you live with: expensive maintenance (German) ,little storage (Corvette, Miata, 911), low technology (GTO). No more! A dream to drive with some small challenge with torque steer in first and second. A small price to pay for the Zoom-Zoom. Carries my golf clubs without lowering the rear seats and a 47" LCD HDTV, still in the box, with the seats down. Rear passengers have real seats and leg room.

Just traded my 2007 Mazdaspeed3 for a new 2010 Speed 3. Only have 100 miles, so more on the handling and performance later. But initial impressions are all positive. Quick comments: 2007-09 versus 2010: Facts: Gone are the HID headlights and LED tail lights. Temp gauge is gone BUT now has a turbo boost gauge. I like that trade, but both would be better. Standard stereo is only a single CD changer not 6-disc Rear cargo liner from 07 fits perfect in the 2010. Winter mats from 07 fit fine in rear and OK in the front. Some gaps in front. 16” winter wheels and tires from my 07 fit on the 2010. Lug pattern, and hub diameter are the same. Still no heated mirrors.

It's a great all around car for the price. Good power with slight turbo lag and torque steer. Once the power is there, hang on! Interior features are awesome for the price. Bose audio sounds rich but the in dash navigation is about the same quality as if you had bought a $50 Garmin, but still a nice feature. Love it or hate it, the front grille grows on you after a while. Combining the power of the car coupled with the price/power and features, it's a really good deal.

I have owned a Civic SI. It rides smoother and more powerful. I test drove the GTI. I agree not as refined, but very close and again way more fun to drive. Gas mileage on the freeway without a lead foot should be around 30 miles/gallon. All this and for less than 23K. I also picked up an extended warranty 5yrs/100K which is included in the price above. Overall best value hands down. Try get this kind of deal with the civic, gti, wrx. You must have made the deal with a gun.

Car is great all around. The only thing I would improve on the interior is to add a temp guage (**it's a SPORTS CAR!!), the exterior is to get rid of the smiley face. I own one, I tolerate the smiley face, but it doesn't belong on a "SPORTS CAR". I don't understand what Mazda was thinking, I thought the point of business was to satisfy customers and increase sales, a smiley face on their sports car does the opposite. Overall though, the car is still the same as the 1st generation, awesome.

Purchased as a replacement to my 2003 Nissan Sentra Spec V. While this car is a downgrade in low end torque and gas mileage (Was getting 31 mpg now getting 24 mpg) the fun factor and refinement is miles ahead. The space in the back seat is also a lot nicer. Traded up because of a baby seat and the Speed allows a person to sit in front or behind me with a child in the rear passenger side. Hatch allows plenty of room for stroller and diaper bags. Looked at other hatch backs but none compared as far as fun, price, and space. I went with the tech package and love the push button start. The Navigation system is average, but nice for an integrated unit.

I was looking for an inexpensive, well- built car that would be fun to drive and get reasonable fuel economy and I found it! I have friends w/VW (too many build quality issues), WRX (dealers are too proud & I can't figure out why), & why waste my time on a Civic Si with ~200 horses? This car is a comfortable every day driver. The Dunlops are a little loud on certain road surfaces (rough asphalt) but the car grips the road better than any of the other cars mentioned above. It performs when you want it to and is well behaved during all driving conditions (wet/dry). The turbo has no lag & when you're on the highway & you want to pass, you don't have to downshift...let the turbo work! Paid 22K!

Had gone out looking for a fun but practical car and checked the entire class out. Ended up choosing the speed for functionality, 5 doors, hatchback, nice upscale inside, etc. My wife wasn't going to see me walk away in a 2 seat sports car. There's very little I don't like about this car, the digital turbo gauge, lack of a temp gauge, low shift points (power peters out past 5500 RPM or so and I came from a Vtec). But the interior looks great, and is roomy for me (6'2" tall). I get decent gas mileage with it, somewhere around 23 or so overall (though the trip computer keeps telling me I get 27), and while I am still not too fond of the smile, it is growing on me.

Having had the car for almost two months now, I can say that overall I'm very, very happy with it. Turning is crisp and the car stays flat even with sudden direction changes. The trans in this car certainly isn't on par with any Honda or even modern VW I've ever driving. Shifting takes some effort and missing the 2-3 shift is fairly easy by hitting the 1-3 gate. However, the limited slip is fantastic for tightening up the car in a corner. Turbo lag is present, but not horrible. The stability control sometimes intervenes without letting you know, making you think the lag is worse than it is. Overall, an excellent car and if performance is more important to you, blows the GTI away.

I have been researching this car since spring of 09 and just last week bought one...I have been smiling ever since! The engine is AWESOME. The appearance of the speed3 is certainly polarizing and it seems that you either love it or hate it. The pictures simply DO NOT do it justice, you have to see it in person. The acceleration is great, handling is crisp, stick takes getting used to but no problem and the brake feel is great. The tech package is worth it, GPS while small is still good, Bose system is not quite aftermarket quality but will please most people, bluetooth is cool, seats are comfortable and the space inside is nice. If you want bang for your buck...look no further! Zoom-Zoom!

Had many GTI's and recently a 3 series BMW, got tired of the endless maintenance issues and awful customer service by both VW and BMW. My wife has had a Mazda 3 for 6 years and I finally noticed how it was just so reliable and fun. Tested a Speed 3 and realized it was time to buy one. A very good car that trounces the VW and BMW. I was actually treated like a human by Mazda. Kudos to Mazda, learn some customer service and build reliable cars to VW and BMW.

bought an 05 3s and loved it, i test drove the speed 3 one day while mine was having work done, and i was sold. its just crazy fast, too much fun, other than the little bit of turbo lag and torque steer which is to be expected, its amazing. the best performing car you can get for under 25k

The best Mazdaspeed 3 built to date!

Got the Celestial Mica Blue w/ tech package. Tech package is totally worth it... push button start, bluetooth, Bose system, navi, and Sirius for 6 months. The color is exotic! The new body style is incredible. Curvier lines, RX8 type wheels, lower appearing stance, functional hood scoop, and dual exhaust make this the best MS3 ever built to date. And the inside is super contemporary and high quality. No torque steer and super clean shifts. Honestly, the best bang for your buck. GTIs, Civic Si's, even the WRXs and EVOs truly can't compare w/ the overall build quality (interior/exterior) and the "best bang for your buck" factor that the MS3 offers.

When you drive this car because your own grin and the feel of this car will remind you why you like to drive. 1) yes, the previous speed3's were better looking, but much harsher. 2) the pull from the turbo is great from 3500 to 5500 rpm. 3) torque steer exists, but not much more than a maxima's, and can truly add to the fun. 4) well put-together, with great shifting, suspension and steering! Had a Volvo v70r (300 hp turbo) that was super-clunky, expensive, and both raw and numb in comparison. 5) hatchback design is very useful. In conclusion, does this middle-aged guy look a little unconventional driving such a silly looking car? Probably, but what fun, utility, economy, reliability and fun!

Practical Performance Bargain

Nothing from me that contradicts the other positive reviews. I've driven my car for a few months now, and I have to remind myself of how inexpensive this car is; great handling, powerful engine, comfortable interior with loads of standard features, practical and reliable -- all for ~$23K! When I consider how aggressive the exterior styling is, I'm really surprised at how comfortable and civilized the car is. As a middle-aged guy, I tend to feel a bit self- conscious due to the car's styling, but it just drives SO well! Be advised that if you live in an area that gets snow, you should plan on buying a set of snow tires for winter since this car is fitted with summer performance tires.

I just got my 2010 MazdaSpeed3. It is silver with the tech package. The engine is the same as the last MS3, but revamped tuning and a new driveline have contributed to making this car much easier to drive, and lots more fun. The brakes are even better than the last car, and I have been unable to unsettle the chassis in spirited street driving. Body roll is minimal, and they have somehow managed to almost eliminate understeer.

Unexpected Value and Fun

After tax and fees base sport approaching 26K but worth every penny. Ride is very stiff, noisy especially in the back seat, bumps at highway speeds are worrisome. Easy to overlook these faults because of the handling, connected feel and sheer fun. Shifter is surprisingly good although I read mixed reviews. The exterior design is subjective but I've gotten no complaints. The interior is well laid out and pleasing to the eye. There are subtle blue LEDs at night that are always on inside. The overall package just works and it's becoming one of my favorite rides.

26 mpg after the first 400 miles. Yes I am babying it except for attacking the winding uphill winding roads where I let it loose. Handling is incredible. Brakes are great. Torque steer? I've felt more torque pull from a 9 lb miniature poodle. Keep the engine in the right power band 3k rpm - 5k rpm and you don't have to worry about torque steer. Looks? Yes it is goofy. Especially at first. Most guys buy an expensive car because they look good in it. Me? I buy an ugly car, because next to it I look really good. Got mine in black and must say that it has a look that really grows on you. 263 ponies with a 4clynder getting 26mgp? Are you kidding me? Bought mine for much less than invoice. Great

I hesitated for a long time between the more reasonable Civic Si, the Golf GTI and the speed. The strong financial incentives on the Mazda 2010 made it an easier decision. This car is so much fun to drive. Without the turbo on, it is a peppy economical car. With the turbo on, you wake up the beast.

I love the power, the handling, and the overall package. The car drives extremely well. The only issues after 1500 miles have to do with the carbon from the tailpipes that ends up all over the rear of the car. I have owned several turbo cars and carbon build up on the pipes is common. This seems excessive. The car emits a lot of smoke on hard acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gear. Overall, it is the best value for the money in terms of horsepower and quality.

I bought my Speed 3 w/ tech package after driving my girlfriends new Mazda 3 S. After driving her car I knew a Mazda would be my next purchase. These cars are amazing! They fly around the corners with ease! I not talking about cornering around a curb at 30 mph, I’m talking sideways at 60-70 mph. These things hold a line so well it’s like you’re on rail! The best thing about going around a corner in my Speed 3 is that it’s absolutely flat while doing it. I’m in love! Power is a huge + this thing is a rocket ship!! Fuel economy is great too. I averaged 28 mpg on my last tank. Only thing I would complain about is there’s a small amount of torque steer, but that adds to the fun. Great job MAZDA!

That is the question. How does Mazda build and sale a car for under $25000 with all the bells and whistles, plus major performance and driveability. The Mazdaspeed 3 is my first Mazda and I am totally thrilled with this purchase. Hands free and voice activated bluetooth for phone and music. Navigation that is more than able, Bose 10 speaker audio, 6 disc in dash changer, Sirius satellite radio all placed for perfect ergonomics. Dual climate control, power windows and locks and a serious keyless entry. I haven't used an actual key in nearly four months. It has two charging ports, auxiliary jack, vanity mirrors with lights, accent lighting on the doors and interior roof.

Just got back from a short trip with my two day old 2010 MS3. What a fun and confident car. I did extensive research for months on what would give me some sense of practicality with a great deal of performance. Camaro (RWD), Genesis (RWD), WRX (Snoozing plastic interior), and others (various maladies); and the MS3 came out on top. I made the right decision! Handling, power, safety, interior design, and fit and finish make it the perfect car unless you can store it on weekdays and during winter and drive it only for fun. Though maybe the MS3 is superior for that too.
