I searched for a couple of months for an SUV; test drove all a couple of times until I narrowed the choices to Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade and Honda Passport. Each had pros and cons. I removed Telluride because it was too difficult to get. I liked the Honda but wasn’t completely sold. Reading reviews from many sites and the Mazda CX-9 kept being mentioned so I decided to test drive the Grand Touring. The ride is smooth and quiet, nice handling, great pick up , it has somewhat good of a sporty feel. It’s actually fun to drive. The seats are really comfortable. Interior really nicely done, tech and safety features very good. Bose sound system is great. People complained third row small but I didn’t expect anything different. However, I am able to get in and out easily and there is sufficient leg room (I’m 5’ 4”). There are just a couple of things I’m not crazy about: the drink holders in the center sit too far back that I literally have to bring my arm back to reach my drink. I guess if you’re tall it wouldn’t be a big deal. I use the one in the passenger side which does help. I’m used to SUVs that have the exterior mirrors that tilt down when you’re backing into a parking space which makes parking so much easier; this car doesn’t do that. I’m would have been nice to have a panoramic sunroof but I knew it didn’t when I bought it and it doesn’t take anything away from everything that makes the CX9 a great choice. And lastly it takes premium gasoline which is quite expensive. These are minor cons for such a great vehicle. I love it and I’m not easily pleased when it comes to vehicles.

Best Driving Vehicle that I have Ever Owned

I started looking for a new SUV back in June as I had a lease vehicle with a contract soon to expire. I test drove the Palisade, Telluride, Explorer, Highlander, Grand Cherokee, Passport, Blazer, and Traverse. The Palisade, Highlander, and Telluride were high on my list because these vehicles had overwhelmingly positive reviews. However, they were ALL too expensive. I previously owned a Highlander and was disappointed the new XLE had faux leather seats. I found this to be unacceptable for a vehicle that costs upwards of $45,000 dollars. Same story with the Ford Explorer which I thought drove incredibly. Not only did it have faux seats (XLT), but there has been a number of stories in print and on Youtube about transmission and other problems. The Grand Cherokee had poor safety ratings (IIHS-HLDI). In my area, only high end Palisade's and Telluride's were generally delivered to lots. My budget was below 40k, so that wasn't going to work for me. The CX9 wasn't on my radar but it came up on just about every best midsize suv website that I looked at. I test drove it and the rest is history. I purchased the Touring trim level with premium package. It has everything we need and literally drives and feels like a luxury car. It's just me and the wife so we didn't need a large suv or a third row for that matter. As such, we'll keep the third row seats down because the extra cargo space is more important for us. I highly recommend this vehicle for small families, it's a really great car with exceptional safety ratings.

I had a 2010 CX9 Grand Touring, so getting the 2020 was a no-brainer, especially given the good reviews the 2020 has received. I like the Grand Touring trim because everything (NAV, sunroof, blind-spot monitors, power liftgate etc.) is standard, and the only options I had to think about were the all-weather mats and a a roof rack. The 2020 also packs some neat things like lane departure warning systems, front cameras and windshield display, that also includes local speed limit information. Despite this one having a 4-cylinder engine (the 2010 has a 6-cylinder one), it is very peppy and the ride is smooth and comfortable. I have driven about 100 miles on it so far, and I have loved it! Only one issue: Like the 2010, this one also comes with 20" wheels, which means that if you're an avid skier and plan to drive in snow country with snow chains, this trim won't be for you. The larger rim means that there is not enough clearance for the chains. This is not an issue for me, since I do not live in the snow belt, and the rare time I do go into the mountains, I do not go when it snows.

Don't Overlook The Base AWD Sport

We weren't in the market for the fanciest trim. We absolutely required AWD. The motor, transmission and excellent brakes fit our needs perfectly for our mountain roads and unpredictable winter weather. Cargo space, especially with the third seat folded down, more than meets our requirements. This vehicle is tight, polished, comfortable, economical for its size and drives like a much more expensive SUV. Very impressive for a base trim level car.

After having a Toyota Sequoia, Toyota Highlander and Toyota Rav 4; I was very undecided for my next car. I knew I didn't need it so big anymore because my kids were grown and rarely ride in my car but I also knew I didn't want it small like the Rav4 because when we are all 4 in the car plus our two golden retrievers; I needed a third row. So I looked and looked for months. I test drove the Mazda cx9 and immediately fell in love with this car. It drives like a small sportscar. My car is black with sand interior/touring with prem package so i have capt seats. The space to walk through to the third row is very small. My dogs have a very hard time fitting through the captain seats. One thing I can not stand on the car is that the signal to change lanes lights up on the side mirrors and it is distracting with the Blind Spot Monitor when that lights up at the same time. It is very distracting. Another reason for the four stars is the air conditioning. I find it to be a bit weaker than other cars. Also not loving the center knob that controls the screen. It is not a touch screen unless you are stopped or going less than 5mph. But other than that I absolutely love driving this car. Very smooth. Great acceleration. Great gas mileage so far.
