This SUV should not be called a Hybrid. It does not do well on MPG. Not even close to the Sticker info.

This is a great car and I love it, but I am disappointed about its fuel efficiency. There is clearly a problem with the EPA mileage rating, which is supposed to be 31 city & 27 highway. I am getting 21 city & 27 highway. The airconditioner broke down during the first 1,000 miles and they had to replace the condensor. It took one week for the part to arrive!

Disappointed with the interior of the dashboard and steering wheel--the RX 300 looks more impressive. The Navigation screen is hard to see during sunny days due to glare (at nights it is wonderful). Overall gas mileage for the first 1,000 miles is about 26mpg, even though we drove more in city thn on the highway. This figure is about 35% better than the RX 300, but not what Lexus claims.

I got my 400h about two weeks ago and I've getting about 27 mpg overall, driving under normal condictions. I live in the Bay Area so cold weather really isn't a factor. I love this car! It's incredibly quiet, has a very solid build quality and feel, and handles great. It's still early, but I couldn't be happier with the purchase.

I just got this 4 days ago, and I already love it. I traded a sedan that "REQUIRED" the highest octane fuel and love this gas effeciency - much better than my sedan, and loads better than my friends with SUV's, plus you don't have to give up luxury.

I had been driving a BMW 740iL for several years but wanted a smaller, more economical vehicle to commute and travel in. Once I test drove the LEXUS RH400h my worries were over. This vehicle is incredible. LEXUS has thought of everything. The ride is most comfortable, the handling is great, the gas mileage puts a smile on my face, and the beauty of the car is something to behold.

After owning 2 Hybrid Toyota's (PRIUS 02 and 04) I am quite disappointed with the "REAL" MPG vs. Toyota/Lexus estimated MPG. Even on a "good" day driving metro Phoenix, Az; by good I mean no need for air conditioner the best we get is 24- 25 MPG. Summertime takes it down to 21 mpg. Frankly, I didn't need to spend 52K to get a few more miles to the gallon than what a regular RX 330 gets. This IS my first Lexus, but will probably be my ONLY Lexus. Yes, its a nice vehicle, but the disappointing mileage have madeit "in my view" a poor discretionary use of my $$

I had a Lexus RX 300. It saved my life in an accident four years ago in Florida. I had no second thought as to quality and safety when I traded in my RX 300 for my new 400h. It will take a little time to get use to turning the key and not hearing a sound like a regular gas powered RX. It will also take some time to get use to the backup camera and rear door that opens with the push of a button . Now if I can only find someone that will drive "Me" around in it so I can sit back in the rear reclining seats , and watch a dvd on the entertainment system !

Excellent automobile! I had the RX300 (2001), RX330 (2004), and now the new 400h. The 400h drives, rides, and handles like the RX330. But, has much better performance, and a little better gas mileage. I averaged 25.3 on 3,000 mile trip. the RX330 was getting around 21~22 for an average. It's an expensive automobile, but I really like it. Savings in fuel will not justify additional cost of the 400h. I have not experienced any problems with any of my Lexus'. I tried 87, 89, and 91 octane, could not tell any difference in mileage or performance. I do recommend you buy the 400h. Buy it for what it is. A "state of art", electronic/mechanical marvel.

Although the 400h is very comfortable and fun to drive it, is not as promised as far as the mileage is concerned. I'm getting 21 miles a gallon and I do mostly city driving. I use my car for work that's why I got a hybrid to save money. Unless they correct this I would not recommend if your goal is to save on gas.

I've never cared much for cars, but this one has changed my mind. It has such a solid, safe feel to it. It looks like a van that took steroids and not the typical monster SUV. It certainly drives better than any van or car I've ever driven and it is actually fun to drive it!The ride is as smooth as glass. This car doesn't know it is going up steep hills either. It eats them. The gas engine cuts out at lights and in traffic, and while this took a bit of getting used to-the silence makes it seem as though it has stalled- I feel better about the car not spewing unecessary gas into the atmosphere.

My brand new Lexus 400h is an exciting car to own and drive. Having the GPS system is like having a friend along for the ride. She never gets frustrated with my choice of turns, just picks up from my new location. The pick-up at acceleration makes it exciting to drive. Watching the trickle use of energy has made me a better driver, as far as how I use the accelerator. I can actually affect the mileage in my favor. This car handles like a dream, a big improvement from my RX 300,2000.

It seems funny at first when the engine shuts down at a stop light, but no loss when it turns green. The integration of the powertain and the smooth ride are wonderful. Lexus has hit this one out of the park....I love it......

Supremely comfortable, jet fast and smooth even for a car, zero defects, easy entry and egress. Customizes to my every whim. Never in 36 years has a vehicle delivered all this for me. More? Great climate control and seats, even in back. Electric lumbar support that's truly wonderful. Auto wipers and auto dimming mirrors are unexpected delight. Etc. If you want an SUV that accelerates & rides like a fine auto, easy in & out, plus 4 wheel stability and capacity, higher driving position, this is the one. Love the hybrid quiet in town and the acceleration. RE: FUEL economy. Driven fairly aggressively with a lot of freeway driving, getting 22 mpg HWY/26 CITY.

Have enjoyed the car immensely. Because of our hills, I'm not able to get the mileage I expected, but still is about 8 - 10 mpg better than my 300RX. Lots of nice "whistles and horns" I didn't know about - and leave it to Lexus to include a bilingual valet key to tell the car checker how to start it!!!

It is quiet, like driving a big sofa, and quick-handling and powerful when you need it. Handles and corners well, with a very good turning radius. It is fun to drive and all of the controls and panel operations are intuitive and easy to use. The in-city mpg is more like 26 than the 31 advertised.

I have had this vehicle for about 4 weeks. I have put about 4200 miles, mostly highway, on the 400h and this is my experience: The 400h is a pleasure to drive. Lots of power when you need it, and rock stable on the road at speeds (by me) up to 105 mph. All systems (air, power, etc.) are flawless. Now the not so good news. The highway mileage is about 26 mpg, excellent for an suv of this weight. In town, where I expected it to shine, I've been getting 22-24 mpg, and that is with careful monitoring of the fuel consumption, and attention to light acceleration. I have talked to other drivers who have the same 400h experience. I have to admit that I am disappointed. Perhaps it will improve.

I have a 2006 RX400h AWD with 53,000 miles on it. I do 80% of my driving in the Seattle Bellevue area and 20% on interstates (mostly between Seattle and Portland). Depending on the season, I get 22-25 mpg in combined city and highway driving and 28-31 mpg on the Interstate. I consistently get 30-31 mpg between Seattle and Portland. This is my 3rd RX and am waiting to see the 2009/10 model. I haven't had any major problems and service at the manufactures recommend intervals.

Hoped the vehicle would be perfect (my SC 430 almost is). However, while the 400 RX is a great vehicle, it has some flaws, the main one being gas mileage is much less than expected. Got only 21.6 mpg the first 4257 miles (mix of highway and city with AC 100% of time). Note: actual calculation of mileage is about 2 mpg less than indicated on screen. (Don't say it is my driving style -- I always get no less than EPA estimated mpg on my SC 430 and other vehicles.) Dealer says others reporting the same mileage situation, but "should" improve as get more miles on vehicle. At least, uses regular gas.

I waited a long time for this car, and am happy to say it was worth the wait. With a family to lug around, I needed to upgrade to an SUV from the sedan I was driving, but didn't want a gas guzzler. This offered the perfect solution to my problem, and had the additional benefit of being a Lexus that is quite luxurious and offers superior performance.

Until I was given an RX 330 as a loaner for the day when my car was in for service, I was adamant about never purchasing another SUV. In my previous experience with an SUV, I felt like a 'weeble' whenever I drove it and was happy to get rid of it. What I can't get over is how comfortable my new R400h is to drive. It has a smoother ride than my SC430 had! I live in the Northeast and it plows through snow with effortless confidence, and when it's raining it feels as if I'm driving on dry pavement. The gas mileage, well, that speaks for itself.

The long wait for the RX400h has been more than worth it. I have only been driving it for just a few days, but all I can say is wow, what a vehicle! The power and acceleration is incredible for an SUV with a V6. It is also very quiet (sometimes totally silent), and comfortable. I would say though that the most surprising finding to this point is that I believe (from testing so far) the EPA estimate of 31 mpg (city driving) probably can be beaten if one is careful with the accelerator. I am saying pleasant surprise since I had been hearing from message boards, etc, that it will not attain EPA estimates. Wrong! The highway mileage so far has averaged at about 27 mpg. Lexus has a new big hit.

After three months and 3,000 miles I can accurately describe this vehicle as practically perfect. It combines exhilerating power when you need it (especially from 50-70 mph when you are passing) and amazing average fuel economy (25.8 mpg so far). On top of that, it has the seemless integration of a multitude of creature comforts. It's as close as I will ever get to knowing what it is like to pilot a stealth bomber (Flint Mica/Black leather).

In my first month of ownership I have not found anything that I dislike, and for me that's unusual! The vehicle is a joy to drive and a real attention- getter. I was somewhat skeptical at first about the CVT as I expected it to be sluggish and ungainly, but after just a few miles I completely forgot that it wasn't a 4- or 5-speed automatic. I really like the fact that I can monitor fuel economy while driving and adjust my driving habits to maximize it. As far as I'm concerned, Lexus hit a real home run with this one, and it was well worth the 8 month wait from the time I originally ordered it.

I have owned the RX 400h since late April. I like just about everything about this SUV. It is a lot of fun to drive and it performs terrifically. Passing on the interstates is a breeze even at high speeds of greater than 80mph. It takes off like a "rocket". It is very quiet and comfortable. But most of all, I am elated with the gas mileage I am getting. The average mpg in the city has been better than the EPA estimate of 31. In fact, on one test recently, I averaged a whopping 40 mpg on pure city driving of 27.5 miles. This was without the AC on but I am still amazed. Obviously, one cannot drive like a hot rod to get this type of mileage. I get about 27-28 on the highway. Coasting helps a lot.

I love my RX 400h. It has great power and control -- a definite luxury vehicle which just happens to be environmentally friendly. The only drawback is that the actual mileage is lower than advertised -- I am getting combined 24-25 mpg, and probably 23 mpg in very cold weather. Real driving and not on a test site produces much lower results than promoted and that was disappointing. Even so, this vehicle is pure bliss to drive and I am not noticing any significant engine noise as reported in other reviews. Drive it and enjoy.

Just received our RX400h - delighted with the improvements over the 2004 330x we had - much better acceleration, much tighter transmission. Electric takes a little getting used - especially when backing out of a parking spot as pedestrians are alarmed. Electric brakes are a little touchy. We are getting an overall 24.3 mpg on regular 60/40 city/highway and have 650 miles on the car. Gas engine seems to run much more than we expected and electic supplements gas when above 50 mph more than we were led to expect. Overall we are delighted with this vehicle. Exceptional quality inside and out.

Let me qualify that I traded a 2002 BMW M3 in on this vehicle, so the fun to drive rating for me was relative. I find the vehicle to be everything I was looking for as I needed the utility and cargo carrying capacity however I was unwilling to burn the amount of gasoline/pollutants for the 97% of the time I would not require same. Acceleration, comfort, ride quality... the LEAST amount of compromise for a vehicle segment that offers little choice.

I Upgraded from Rx 330. This car-based SUV is quieter and feels more solid than the last one.(The hybrid weighs much more due to the batteries, yet handles better.) Interior is unbelievably comfortable, with perfect seat height and angle for those with back problems. Entry and exit are perfectly thought out. Mark Levinson sound system and Navigation with rear back up camera add greatly to the enjoyment and utility. Actual overall gas mileage is about 25-26 mpg-- not bad for a 4500+ lb vehicle. Hybrid engine is silent at start up and at idle, yet extremely powerful with a great " snarl" at rapid acceleration. Best car I've had so far ( and I've had them ALL). And it feels good to use less gas

After driving a pick-up truck for years I wanted a vehicle with a more refined drive, styling and amenities but which would also provide the capability of a decent amount of cargo capacity. After looking around and test driving several SUV's the Lexus 400h caught my attention with its superior gas mileage, styling and refinement. I have had my vehicle for a month and find it as pleasurable to drive now as I did the first day....In fact it took me that long just to master the navigation system!! While my gas mileage hasnt reached the government rating it is still satisfactory for the size/weight and amenities of this vehicle.

Review 2 - after winter

I reviewed this car last October and have follow-up comments after a winter of New England driving. Mileage dropped about 3 mpg for both city and highway in winter conditions (I got about 24 highway, 28 city). This Spring I have reverted to the Fall mileage which is right on the EPA numbers, though I drive with the windows down and usually avoid AC.
