One of the best cars I've owned. 51mpg so far.
I purchased the vehicle on 9/1/2023. I've got just under 2,000 miles on it. My commute is about 25 miles one way on a 60/40 hwy/city loop. I'm averaging about 51 mpg driving 70-80 on the highway and usually closer to 75-80. My last car shared a lot of the running gear with this. We still have a 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid SEL with no tech package. Both use the 1.6, but now the Niro doesn't have a reverse gear, just uses the EV motor. The Ioniq because of its shape is more aerodynamic, weighs slightly less, so returns marginally (2-4mpg) better gas mileage, depending on how quickly I drive. The Niro is nearly 4 inches taller, and this time I didn't skimp and buy what was on the lot. The dealership found the exact car I was looking for in about a month's time. The only features it doesn't have are the bigger wheels(which I didn't want, bc the fuel impact) and the LED headlights (not worth 2+K cost). The Ioniq I bought in 2018 didn't have Highway driving assist, or any of the excellent driver aids. I really made a mistake not purchasing that in the Ioniq. The Niro can literally drive better than me at times. Other reviewers who complain about beeping of lane warning etc, are driving bad and the car is warning them of it. If you engage the auto-steering it won't beep because it will fix your bad driving. Also, if you're passing too closely it also beeps, to warn you are making an unsafe maneuver, which again isn't the car working improperly, it is you making a risky move. I am so appreciative of the driving aids and use them every trip, because it decreases the demand on me when I am driving. Night and Day, when I drive the Ioniq, it needs lots of steering inputs to continue driving straight versus the Niro that just needs your hand on the wheel to provide occasional inputs so the car knows you are still holding the wheel. Having driven this hybrid system for nearly 5 years including my time with the Ioniq there are a couple of things to know when trying to get the best mileage out of the system. Manufacturer tires are generally more efficient than the replacement tires you will buy. Also your tire pressure is critical, if you do not maintain the correct pressure, your mileage will be impacted (4-8mpg) so paying attention to that is important. Hilly driving conditions will impact mileage too. Ambient temperature and use of the climate control can significantly impact mileage (5-12 mpg). This is more for cold weather as the air conditioner will run on electricity, but the heater uses the engine to produce heat. Additionally winter gas is less energy dense because of additives so mileage will decrease because of that too. Additionally cold weather makes the battery less efficient. In the coldest of weather (-5F) with climate control, winter gas, my fast driving and probably not optimal tire pressure would net me 42 mpg in the Ioniq. This is still respectable given the conditions. In my old 2012 Ford Focus that was about the size of the Ioniq would get low twenties in that weather. The last thing that can have a big impact is the speed at which you drive. If I drive the Niro at a strict 70 on the highway, I have gotten more than 54 mpg. Unfortunately, I’m too impatient and don’t like driving that slow. When I drove home at 80 and accelerated aggressively, I got a little bit more than 48 mpg on the trip. Take all these factors together and yes, your mileage probably won’t match the lab tested numbers that aren’t truly representative of normal driving. I’m still extremely happy with it. I love all the tech features. Love the heated/cooled seats and heated steering wheel. Getting the SX means it has additional side glass lamination, so if you want a quieter cabin, you have to get an SX or more. The one upgrade I bought aftermarket which I highly recommend, especially if your phone has wireless charging capabilities is to buy a wireless apple carplay or android auto dongle so that you don’t have to plug in your phone. My old phone wasn’t new enough to work with the dongle, but my new phone is and it really impacts how you interact with the car because you don’t ever have to plug in your phone to the car again. What a game changer, kinda like push button start, once you have it you never want to go back. [Dealer experience redacted]

Grear car…not any more…
After buying this 2023 Niro Ex in October of 2022 car was really great especially on gas.Now 14k miles later ( not even 1 year old ) car broke down being parked in garage.Dead hybrid battery(12v battery reset does not help) Road side assistance came to “jump started “ after 4 h of waiting. Car was towed to a Kia dealer and now sitting for few days and nothing was found,they don’t know what to do and I got no car and no loaner from a Kia dealer. If car brakes down so fast it must be way far from being reliable.

Great MPG, stylish, the perfect size.
I really like my 2023 Kia Niro. I have the hybrid model and routinely get 58.3 mpg. My last car, a 2010 INFINITI G37x got between 16-21, so I’m ecstatic. When I went to test drive cars, I was in a hurry because the engine quit on my INFINITI and I needed something ASAP. I looked at the Hyundai Sonata and the Niro and REALLY preferred the Niro. I drove it and bought it the same day. Compared to my G37x, the car stereo isn’t quite as nice, though it sounds good. I had the Bose system previously and it was stellar. The road noise is more noticeable on the Niro. My G was pretty quiet (other than engine noise). The safety tech and the gas mileage more than make up for those short comings in my opinion. What I really like is that the car is very stylish and modern, the safety features work really well. I sold cars for INFINITI in 2018 and their blind spot monitor was unreliable, but the one on the Niro is perfect. I’ve never had it miss a car. The car basically drives itself when on intelligent cruise control. The lane keep does pull to the left side slightly, and when driving on mountain roads, it picked up on the car in the next lane over and slowed down. I don’t like that it brakes WAYYYY TOO LATE when using cruise control and coming up to a stop light. If there isn’t a car in front of you, it stops really fast and it’s scary. It’ll also slow way down and alert you to stopping cars a bit too sensitively. Better safe than sorry? I wish there were more USB ports (regular, not “C”) in the front area. There is one regular that I use for my dash cam, one I use for USB music, and one type C. I wish they had one in the center console, too. I’ve hauled an entire lounge chair in the back, so there’s plenty of room. Comfortably fit 4 adults inside. The toggle between the radio and climate control is a bit annoying, but you get used to it. I miss old school buttons…. Overall, the car is great. I love it. I’m extremely picky as a person, and this ticked off my boxes. I think I may have a few days in the snow here where I can’t get around because it doesn’t have AWD, and I did get stuck already during a big storm last winter, but I just won’t push it in the future. I drive for work going to client’s homes, so I’m excited about the cheap fill ups I get at the gas station. Super cute car.

So good, we got TWO!!
We first leased an SX Touring, mineral blue with a black aero-blade. A lot of folks complement us on the vehicle. It’s got virtually everything I want in a vehicle: auto cruise control, all other driving safety features, power lift gate, memory seats, heated steering wheel, heated/ventilated seats, and much more. We are getting almost 50 mpg—wow! Liking it so much, I traded in my 2020 Honda CTV Touring Hybrid (averaging 39.3 mpg) for an SX model. It’s virtually the same as the Touring with what’s important to me. Averaging 52.6 mpg—double wow!! I bought this one and, more than likely, will buy the Touring, too.

Broke down in the first three weeks
You’re looking to buy a 2023 Kia Niro hybrid, my advice is to purchase literally any other car. Three weeks into my four year lease with the temporary tags and plastic still on the floor mats, this car just abruptly stopped in the middle of the road saying hybrid system failure. It has 1100 miles. What a joke.
