This is my first American car purchase in over 15 years. I was impressed with the Liberty right from the test drive. This is a fun to drive SUV, with plenty of power and refinement. This is also my first Jeep, and from the looks of it, won't be my last. I would highly recommend putting the Liberty on your shopping list if you are seeking a great little SUV. Even if you are skeptical of American made cars (like I was), give the Liberty a look, it will be well worth your time.

We have had the Liberty for about 4 months now. It continues to perform flawlessly and delivers about 20mpg around town. With all of its torque you must be careful accelerating in the wet. Other than that it's a blast.

I have had the vehicle over one year with no problems. Only regular service has been done. I have driven on road and off road in Deep South Texas in mud and on sandy beaches. I drive 50 miles a day on open highway pavement plus another 40 plus in city with an average MPG of about 25. Plus it does well in Mexico on steep mountain roads where 1 1/2 MPH is fast. I did change the original tires to meet the demands put on the vehicle from road type tires to all surface tires. It goes through one foot of water with rocky bottom no problem.

OK. Love the Liberty ... except .... It all started with the Low Tire Pressure light going on intermittently despite adequate tire pressure! The dealer told me to ignore that. Now I have "ESP BAS" on continually for no reason and an "!" light intermittently. The dealer told me on Thursday they are working with the Chrysler engineers on the problem. Bottom line ... it's driving me nuts. I have a brand new car with lights on that shouldn't be and can not get it fixed. I should not have to be ignoring what are clearly intended to be warning lights. Under 4000 miles on the vehicle by the way!

This vehicle is fun to drive. I love the size although the cargo space is a bit limited. The rear seats fold down easily for more storage area. The ride is smooth and tight without being stiff. The seats are well padded and sit comfortably, but are very narrow (and I'm only 160 lbs). I have the leather trim option which means the seats are mostly vinyl with a little bit of leather on the sides. The back and seat bottoms become very hot and "sweaty" in the summer. The highway ride is comfortable but has a lot of wind noise above 60 mph. I have 7000 highway miles since purchased new in Sept '05. The EPA sticker boasts 22 mpg highway and I can't even break 16 mpg.

Bought it mostly for the engine. Excellent fit and finish (near Toyota quality). Amazing amounts of torque. Very wide band of usable torque (1400 - 3200 RPM). Merging onto a highway is effortless, very quick around town. Hills and mountains are no problem. Good handling but tends to wander a bit on the highway. Firm yet comfortable ride. Good seats once you get them adjusted the way you want them. Powerful A/C takes little or no power from the engine. Potent brakes with ABS. Very easy to modulate. Smooth five speed automatic transmission. Shifts could be a bit firmer and bit quicker.

2005 Jeep Liberty Diesel Review

Today's diesels are nothing like yesteryear. They are fast, clean, quiet and efficient. I average 27 mpg with my mostly highway driving. Acceleration can give you *whiplash* About half of the local service stations sell diesel fuel and there is never a line to get at the pump. I'm extremely happy about switching to diesel. Hybrids are good if you live in the city with stop and go traffic. For suburbanites, diesel is the smart thing to do. Hey -- if worse ever came to worse, I could burn old french fry oil. :-)

This review revised August 05, 2025 My 2005 JEEP LIBERTY is still great! Oh it has had its fight with time, the well known factory electrical problems, the crappy seat material never looking clean and the rust areas that plague the car. They all have these problems. At about 128,000 miles I had to have the transmission rebuilt. The prev owner could have been an off roader, there are some curious damages that indicate that could be the case. BUT: The car runs GREAT! ! ! The engine runs sweet. The engine growl when running went away when I added lukas to the oil. The engine runs smooth and strong, the transmission is strong. The 4wD system works great as well. I use the JEEP when I travel to my cabin, never a problem. I currently have to deal with the rust. They all get the rust. Daimler did not design a rust free model and maybe they didn't add any rust preventive media. For those who forget, Daimler Owned JEEP until 2007. But all Jeep Liberty's get the rust in/on the rockers and the doors. If you don't have it yet (unlikely) YOU WILL. I most likely will consider an open rocker design to enhance air flow to try to keep that area dry and I will spray it with abundance with either rust proofing or mineral oil which I have had great experiences in stopping rust. All in all, the JEEP LIBERTY by Daimler is fabulous. Yes it has a couple of problems that comes with the car by design, but it is super reliable and is my main driver. I replaced the fog lights, which were terrible, with LED focused beam lights. You can use them for drivers, they are that bright. Replaced the Factory radio with a SONY with USB for music and Audio books. Better than a CD player, Great upgrade. I absolutely love the hard cover dash. Daimler used a hard dash opposed to the softy vinyl one that cracks over time. This dash has not cracked, and I don't expect it to. Other than the crappy seat material that forever looks dirty no matter what you do, the interior looks good, controls are easy to use. The window control on the center console, the bain of some owners, turns out to be most accessible, easy to use. Other than having windows with the manual crank, I believe I prefer the control on the center console. One rather important thing to look out for is the shifter cable. The end that attaches to the transmission has a plastic attachment. Over time this plastic wears a larger diameter hole. evenutally, it can simply slip off of the transmission attachment and you are stuck. Do note, it is NOT easy to get to, you most likely wont be able to repair it on the road, so watch for this one. Having owned the JEEP Liberty for many years now, I feel safe and secure in knowing it will be ready whenever I need it.

This vehicle must be a lemon; I really try to like it. Had egr valve replaced at 9000 miles as engine light had came on to stay; dealer had to order the part which took about a week to get. Engine still misses and just throws a fit every once in a while; took it to dealer to get it fixed and they said it was ok. Little do they know. ha ha ha

I have owned four Jeeps. This is the biggest "Hunk Of Junk" I have owned EVER!! multiple, multiple problems. To be fair, It is great when it is not in the shop. However, it has been in the shop 14 times in the first year. I have parked in my drive way and have a 'Lemon Law" Attorney. The dealership does not care and blow off all complaints. JEEP will not help. This Liberty Limited CRD stinks! Worst auto I have EVER owned. If you want to buy one, know your state's "Lemon Law" and hire a GOOD Attorney because, you're going to need it! Jeep/Chrysler will do NOTHING & dealer ship blames Chrysler and ANOTHER RUN AROUND!

Purchased it used in February wwith just over 5k miles. Overall excellent vehicle. The side view mirrors have a killer blind spot so I always check over my shoulder (which is probably the safest option anyway). Some of the options should have been standard on the limited but when you buy a car used you don't get to be picky. For instance it would be nice to have leather seats standard. So far no problems mechanically/electrically however it's only been a few months. I did just get a recall notice on the ball joints so we'll have to wait and see.

My wife and I test drove just about everything and settled on the Kia Sorento or the Liberty, We were able to drive both back to back. The Liberty has a tighter feel, the Kia was bouncy and felt sluggish. The liberty felt snappy. I like the fact that you can hear the engine. We couldn't get all the options we wanted in one vehicle. We wanted the off-road group and the towning package and got neither. It took over 5 hours to complete the deal!! I still can't belive it. we are glad we have a real Jeep!

My 05 Liberty diesel was in the shop for four of the first six weeks I owned it. It had to be towed 3 times for starting issues and could not be taken though any car wash as it would stall and not start again for 6-8 hours. It had an oil leak which was never fixed and the Chrysler Rep. from St. Louis was as rude and inconsiderate person as I have ever met. This was a very unfortunate situation that could have been handled much differently to keep a loyal Chrysler fan happy. Chrysler needs to take a close look at their customer service issues. Good bye Chrysler, Love my new Toyota!

Just bought my new Liberty Limited a week ago. I LOVE this car! It's got Spirit! So glad that I nixed others in it's class. I wanted a car that was not too big, and not too small. The size of the Liberty is perfect, and rear seating is fine. The chrome wheels, chrome grill and side strip really dress it up. Great pick up and all the power I want. Turns on a dime, and handles great. Fun to drive. Some have complained about gas mileage, but it's not that far off from competing models and I decided not to make gas mileage the primary factor in buying.

After owning 3 Limited/Grand Cherokees, the Liberty is a solid disappointment. The gas gauge and oil lights go off/on randomly. There is a wheel rub noise at low speeds. The dealer can't fix it.Chrysler doesn't care. The seat sits 2 inches too high and doesn't adjust. The door locks are right where you want to rest your arm. The Sirius radio is static prone.

Love the style, ease of handling, value for money. Diesel fuel could be cheaper and I'm not sure we are getting the fuel efficiency advertised. We only get about 420 miles per tank as of now. I believe the advertised 500 miles per tank is misleading.

I have leased two Grand Cherokees and two Libertys (2002 and 2005). Love this little frog, as my husband calls it. Just as plush and much better pickup than my Grand Cherokee that was an 8 cylinder. Fun to drive, easy to park. Comfortable leather seats. Great doodads. Plush, sporty, rides like a car but has lots of room for hauling plants, boxes, etc. when you put down the back seats that fold down very easily. I have had no problems with either of my Libertys. I love it. "My little Beep."

Special ordered this Jeep. I have been quite pleased with this car in spite of some quirkiness. Love the 2.8 L turbo diesel. It is a bit noisy but the torque is phenomenal. This little guy is no slouch on the road. Great fuel economy, 30 - 31 MPG (calculated) when kept under 65 MPH. Fairly good reliability. Torque converter is weak link in the drive train and I am on #3. Engine requires a bit more care than the gas version but it is an easy engine to maintain. Some aftermarket engine parts available (filters) but all else you have get at the dealer and they are not cheap. Adequate long distance road car but very good off road and in heavy snow.

I'm 6ft tall and without power adjustment I would have a hard time fitting. It is a bit noisy but hey it's a diesel.

I've owned several SUVs since 1980: International Scout (2), Ford Bronco, Ford Explorer (3). I use my Liberty to tow a 2500 lb. boat/trailer package mostly, putting on about 60% of my miles that way (to-and-from Canada). Performance/handling and economy are are as good/better than any previous SUV, including the Bronco and Scout V-8s.

We have wanted an SUV for a while but either could not justify the horrible mileage of a true off-roader or the pointlessness of a "cute-ute". Other vehicles we considered were a close-out Land Rover Discovery or a 2005 Freelander. Also looked at and disliked the Ford Escape and the Mazda/Mercury clones. I actually go off road and this Jeep is a joy to drive. The 5,000 trailer towing capacity is way more than we actually use but since we have been hauling rocks and firewood, we have made very good use of it so far. The fact that it is a diesel makes it all the more unique and fun to own.

They could have easily made the diesel get better mileage. The seats need more cushion - nice leather surface but they are hard as a rock on 8 hour trip. Feels like metal skeleton inside the seat is sticking in your thighs, maybe made for large heavy person? Windshield is almost straight up like a nice wind blocker reminds me of a Suzuki Samurai, worst jack system ever conceived - not very usable and takes forever to use, could use a particle filter for better mileage and lower emissions. Auto Only shifts gears at certain speeds, 4th at 50mph. Should be variable and able to hit 5th in city driving 40-45. Really nice to tow with, even pulling large trailers, like my 30', 600# camper.

The vehicle is fun to drive and quite nice in appearance. Problems are with the transmission. At random times the check engine light has illuminated and the transmission goes into "limp home" mode. The dealer has replaced several parts and changed programs in the computer. Ongoing problems are delayed shifting, excessive slipping during shifting, random up and down shifting, and lurching at random times. The fuel economy is not as advertised. The city driving fuel economy would improve if the transmission shifted correctly. I have brought these transmission issues up with the dealer and they maintain the transmission is operating per specification. No joy regarding a solution!

I bought my 2005 Liberty in Dec.2004 to replace my 2002 Liberty. I did not expect to do this since I had bought the 2002 as a compromise vehicle because my Audi could not navigate a rough trail to a cabin in New Hampshire due to low ground clearance. To my surprise, I got to like the Liberty (although not its thirsty habits) and once the brakes and tires were upgraded in the 2005, I could not resist renewing the experience. The lights are much better in the 2005 also. Some say the cargo volume is small. However, I got a full dresser, nightstand, mirror and various other bedroom items inside the Jeep with all doors and windows closed and put the two headboards on the roof. No problem!

This is the most classy, reliable fun car I have ever had. It's extremely maneuverable and has a nice ride for being a small SUV. It's got plenty of storage space in the back considering it's a small vehicle. I have to say I love the way the Liberty looks on the inside and outside. I was so excited to find an SUV that was so classy. Unfortunately, I have experienced some problems with the transmission/4WD. The car gets stuck in reverse. I then I have to turn it off and on. It's been in to get fixed and no one can find anything wrong with it. Although Chrysler does a fantastic job of making their vehicles look good, but the reliability is just not there. It's a shame! Mine only has 12,000 miles and I'm going to get rid of it. I just can't trust it.

The best fun for the most economical price in a small compact SUV on the market today! Try this 6 cylinder with 4WD.Take it everywhere - mountains with ice and snow and watch this baby perform. Yes the Cherokee is nice too but check the handling and quick natured torque of this puppy of a Jeep and you will just see that maybe it isn't just a puppy after all. All weather conditions, try it! It's amazing fun, need to do a quick turnaround - go for the 360~ on a dime. Tight parking no problem, fits right in with NO effort, None! A must try first vehicle before you make any other compact SUV purchase!

If you are thinking of buying one, don't

Engine runs poorly, fuel economy is poor, FWD only works some of the time. The dealer has been very cooperative in attempting to repair it, but MoPar won't help them. We have owned a lot of new cars over the years and I have to say this one is the worst.

Jeep Liberty CRD Diesel

I purchased this Liberty used with 65K on it. Drove it home 350 mi. Ran great for the first 3K miles and then trouble hit. I had an oil leak that turned into a need for a new turbo, then a new thermostat. Great truck but the dealer can't get parts very fast. No parts available from the warehouse, so parts must come from other dealer inventories, if they will give them up. If you can, stay away from the Liberty CRD.

This Jeep has been a great vehicle. It has been off road in the mountains and in the mud with out any problems. On the highway at 70 mph I am able to obtain 22 mpg. Around town it is about 17.5 mpg. No too bad for a vehicle that weighs almost 5000 lbs. The full time 4 wheel drive is great in the rain.

After Two Year, I'm Very Impressed

I've had my '05 Liberty Limited for two years now, and after 30,000 miles, I'm very impressed. I've not had a bit of trouble with this vehicle. I can't believe the improvement in build quality over the past 20 years for Jeep. All I do is perform regular service, and drive it. I love this vehicle. A lot of times I'm on the freeway, and the luxury features of the Ltd. are great. Other times I'm using the 4WD to get to trail heads or on snowy or icy roads. Never a lick of stress or strain. Great vehicle. The gas mileage stinks, but this is a truck shaped like a box, not a car shaped like a wedge. Also, I can put my bike in the back upright with the rear seats down, front bike tire off.

CRD for America

Good that Jeep offers diesels in the American market. We drove diesel powered cars in Europe for years so it's not surprising to see them gaining more acceptance in the US due to higher fuel prices. Our Jeep is powerful, very capable off road and quite livable as a daily commuter. Fuel consumption is OK but could be less -- it is a heavy vehicle, after all, and the full-time 4x4 on the Limited makes winter driving much more secure.

Love My Jeep!

I traded my Explorer for a Liberty and I have not been disappointed. While the Explorer scared me sometimes, the Jeep is a beauty. At 5'3" and 110lbs, I feel like my car matches me now more so than the Explorer did. I love the fact that I can manage my music from the steering wheel while I drive. Absolutely love the heated seats. unlike my husband's Corvette! ha, ha. Please buy one people, they are truly fun to drive.

The CRD Liberty

Just purchased the new CRD Liberty and love it! The diesel is a little bit noisier than my VW TDI, but it runs great. First 100 mile trip, you'll notice the diesel is only turning 1,800 rpm at 70 miles an hour in overdrive, yet has so much torque, that it pulls cleanly without downshifting. Gas mileage is already working out to be 25-27 MPG, and comfort and quality of the interior are first rate. We also live up a steep gravel road, and this baby climbs like there's no tomorrow. The perfect match--diesel torque and economy with Jeep's great off road ability's.

Don't Think Twice

I have owned Jeeps for years - the CRD is #4. I traded in my '02 Grand Cherokee V8 (even though I loved it) because of poor gas mileage. I was reluctant to get a Liberty when they came out because I thought I needed more space, and the 3.7L didn't get that much worse mileage than a V8 anyway. I've only put 1,000 miles on the CRD, but so far I'm in love with it. It's efficient, has a cool rumble because of the diesel, the build quality is great, and the Limited 28G package makes it feel like a Lexus inside. Jeep really did it right.
