Used 2004 Grand Cherokees are a bargain
I have owned a 2002, then sold n bought a 2004 a year ago. Heres the deal... if u want a commuter, buy something else. But if you live in desert and mountain terrain, for about 5/6 Grand u can buy a lightly used older GC. Most older ones have been beat up and under maintained. Take your time, find a coddled GC. Most folks ignore maintenance, beat em up, then tranny, transfer case and rear seals give u headaches with old fluid and neglect. With over 200k of them out there, be patient and get an absolute animal in bad weather. The Laredo is the only one that doesn’t have vent flapper problems, plus the base model has less to go wrong on. Change all ALL fluids belts, hoses after buying. Review brakes too. I added a 2 inch lift kit, big tires, and for $140 bucks added a new radio with blue tooth. Avoid non garaged GCs and go for NO rust. Be patient. Added seat covers just because from Costco for $25 bucks, new xenon headlights for $150, mats cost almost zilch, and added a $200 carrier on top, and a rear hitch and electrical for $175, for towing and bike rack. Shocks were 150. The styling is classic. So for about 7500-8000 i have a truck riding 4 wheeler that goes everywhere and looks and performs great. Compare it to new, for $40-50k, which i can easily afford, and save massive money. Park it anywhere and a scratch or ding, easily repaired, doesn't cause mental anguish. Tags n Insurance are super low. Unless rock crawling, they are a fraction of over priced wranglers, with way more comfort and peanuts on price, and go just about anywhere wranglers go. Hold out for the V8 if u can. My wife loves it, its an attitude, and snow, rain or dirt make it shine! So what if the gas mileage is in high teens and a few repairs come up, jeep parts are cheap! Its a tank on wheels, inexpensive, and very fun to drive after all the mild improvements. Invest the difference in an IRA or 401k and get rich.

Best Used Car For the Price
Bought this car at 142k, its currently has 145k, but the power is more than enough for highway driving, it will comfortably sit at 80MPH, seats are like a 20 year old couch, audio is great for being 15 years old, curbs and offroad is no issue, drive it from FL to MI, 19MPG, best purchasing decision ever at 3300, no rust since its an FL car.

No better 4x4
Have 255,000 miles on my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 with the 4.0 - 6 cylinder, runs on regular gas. If you keep up on the maintenance, will last a long time, yes the 6 cylinder is a noisy old engine been around for 4 or 5 decades, but it will last 500,00 miles. If you are a off road driver then I would go for the V-8, however the 6 cylinder is so easy to work on and parts are cheap. Everything still works as it should except my fog lights, I think it is a fuse will fix when the weather is warmer, headlights work so well do not really need the fog lights. If you find one and it has been maintained grab it, if you find a fixer upper parts are cheap, and like I said the 6 cylinder is easy to work on.

Great Used vehicle
Purchased this 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 liter high output about 7 months ago. Had every option available. 10 disc cd changer, navigation, rock bars, sunroof, two tone leather. The wood trim looks great! The technology is now heavily outdated but still functions well! One problem since ownership began, power steering has been not functioning correctly but barely noticeable. Get stiff at low speeds, under 5 mph. Other then that, has been very reliable and has not once failed to start! Great off road as well, in the mud or rock. Stupidly drove in 32 inch of snow this winter, amazingly made it two miles home. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase and would recommend this Jeep to anyone in the used market!

Loves to take my money
There isnt a better winter performance car on the road. I live in Minnesota and as soon as the snow flied, my jeep becomes the fastest car on the road in 4wd full time. The issue with this vehicle is the continuous repair fees. I've had the below items replaced as of 122,000 miles. Power window motors front door connection to body master brake cylinder head gasket main seal rear Axel seal cruise control AC/blower flaps shocks 3 sets of tires Driver seat tracks (rocking chair) recall on seat heaters hood and rear glass support CD player display I swear to god if i didnt love this car I would burn it. Value wise, its about as bad as it gets.
04 Laredo 4x4
Update from review, Jeep now has 180k miles, we are replacing worn out shocks cost $700. Look forward to a better ride now. Still no issues with this Jeep if you are willing to take care of it. Small stuff that is annoying though. The wire harness issue on all these is a pain, if you are able to look at the broken wire in your door jam and can fix go ahead and fix it like I did save you money. Another part had to replace was the cooling fan, stock cooling fan went dead was a $200 repair and replace cost. All in all the quality and reliability is there on the 4.0 inline 6. Take care of it, and it will take care of you.
Great Truck
Purchased my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee used w/approx 47,000 miles on it & traded it in 3 1/2 later with approx 84,000 miles on it. I put new Firestone Destination tires on it & got it aligned right after purchase. Got new rear brakes @ approx 70,000 miles & replaced front & rear shocks @ 74,500 miles. Aside above I have only done regular service checks. The truck has been great & reliable (drove it from NY to CA) experience. It is much more comfortable than I'd ever expected, even after 14 hours of driving. By now, anyone buying a V8 Jeep should know about it's 15 mpg gas mileage, quit complaining that's not why you buy a Jeep & same with the brakes. Not the best, but they stop you.
A very happy repeat Jeep buyer!
This is my 7th Jeep vehicle, and 5th Grand Cherokee. The common complaint of the windows not working and/or the interior lights not shutting off is a simple broken ground wire in the driver's door harness. Took me 10 minutes to fix. Overall, I'm very pleased with this Jeep, although some things have not lasted as long as older models I've owned, namely, the hood supports failed at 50k, all 4 shocks leaking at 60k, and rear axle seals at 70k. Other than that, it's been rock-solid reliable. Fuel mileage is outstanding for an engine whose roots date back to the early 1960s. By the way, it's an inline 6, not a V6 as some reviewers have written. I would and do recommend the Grand Cherokee!
Blah
Ok we have had this thing for a few years now, thought that the 4.0 and the hard to find 2wd "Select Track" would give us some ok returns in MPG....yea....NOT. Some are saying they are getting decent milage but we get 15mpg NO MATTER WHAT! My Charger R/T is turning about 400 HP at the crank right now and I get 25mpg with THAT! What the HECK! Ive tried EVERYTHING and I work on cars quite regularly including major repairs so Im no slouch on a vehicle. The window cables are junk too, replaced 2 of them. Otherwise its not a bad suv, its just GUTTLESS as a dead horse. Dont expect the 4.0 to have the power to get out of its own way. V8 is the ONLY way to go, gets better MPG in these too....
