Not the dual clutch transmission I had in my VW CC

Art, 08/19/2016
2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 4dr SUV (1.6L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)

The dual clutch transmission in the Hyundai Tucson is a piece of junk. I've had 2 VW CC's and their dual clutch transmission worked flawlessly. The nightmare of a transmission in the Hyundai is unsafe at any speed. Sometimes you can't get the car to move, prompting horns to honk when the light turn s green. Other times it leaves the line like a dragster as the tires spin and I'm shot off like a rocket. I've read the other reviews and this car is not safe to be on the road. If Hyundai can't fix the issue, they should buy the car back. I'm not one to depend on the Federal Government for anything except more problems, but in this case the NHTSA needs to step in and help the consumer.

Hyundai Tucson Experience

Two time Hyundai owner, 03/25/2020

Hello, its my four year since purchasing my Hyundai Tucson and I would like to add this isn’t my first zero miles Hyundai I also purchased a brand Hyundai Elantra 2012. In both vehicle the interior was cheaply made and experience break downs. For example the volume and radio station programming knobs is made with a silver trim and over time the trim fades away and looks bad over time. The vehicle also has poorly made knobs for air conditioner vent adjustment. Both new Hyundai’s I bought the same thing happen the knobs fall off and eventually you have to replace. The windows of the Hyundai Tucson’s are made with a pulley system that’s made of plastic when my windows stopped working both windows in front of car I opened the door panel to be shocked to see the plastic gear ⚙️ that’s connected to a metal anchor that pushes the window up and down was stripped and look like grated cheese, cheaply and poorly made they don’t sell the gear ⚙️ by Itself either they want you to buy the whole door panel that comes with many more parts that didn’t need replacing at all $269 fix per window. The tires the vehicle came with I had to replace those almost immediately. I also had water pump failure that caused over heating of the vehicle at 30,000, Hyundai replace the pump but put 300 miles on my vehicle to diagnosis the problem at the dealership. Engine control module failure the computer had to be changed at 50,000 miles.

Great Until the Engine Blew

Jason K, 09/28/2022
2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 4dr SUV AWD (1.6L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

I bought a 2016 limited turbo (1.6L) certified pre-owned last year. I am the second owner and bought it with 78,000 miles. The car is great with snow (AWD) and other things. What makes me unhappy is that the engine blew at only 111k miles. My wife was driving as usual (not aggressive etc), and then she lost acceleration power. We pull over and then hear knocking in the engine. Took the car to two different dealers who submitted PA requests to Hyundai to repair the engine since Hyundai has had serious engine problems with this model. Both claims were denied. I called Hyundai of America, only to be told that the car does not qualify because it was not built in the factory and time frame the lawsuit specified. Why only certain cars when engines were similar overall? Currently trying to get a buyback from Hyundai because they REFUSE to fix it, waiting response. I really do love the car, but the service from Hyundai and the reliability of this car is not worth my time. Don't buy this car unless you are willing to accept risking having to pay for another engine. That being said, no mechanic outside of dealerships will fix it because Hyundai doesn't sell engines to them and all four said "Those engines are supposed to be covered under warranty" and were very confused when I told them that I tried three times to get the company to take action with no success. I'm feeling forced to pay 10k+ for an engine. It's so unfair that they won't fix my engine when these engines are notorious for these problems.

Piece of junk

I’d like to say I’ve had nothing but problems with my Hyundai Tucson 2016 from day one with customer service and the vehicle itself. I bought it new, I’ll never buy another Hyundai. Handle on driver side was broken, could not open vehicle. Dealership replayed it And now the key fob doesn’t work and because I didn’t pay for the initial repair, they are going to charge me to replace it. The fob works on the passenger door, just not the driver door and that’s an inconvenience. Also my air conditioner works when you are moving in the car but when sitting idol it’s stale air and they want me to pay them to hook up some devise to check it out. This vehicle is only 4 yrs old. How can things be so wrong. All windows have been replaced because they would not roll back up. It’s been a LEMON from year 1. I should have kept up with the lemon law and I dropped the ball but it’s ok, I’ll never buy another one and all the friends buying vehicles will get bad reviews from me. It made me pick a star and I choose 1 but I wouldn’t give any stars for what’s happening to my vehicle. Oh and my passenger mirror won’t go in or out, only up and down, they are having to get a part for that. 4 yrs old and you’d think the car would last longer than that! I’m very disappointed in this vehicle and they still call me to try to give me deal on another one. Ha ha ha jokes on you, I’ll never purchase another Hyundai. This piece of crap needs everyone to hear about it. The duel transmission, don’t get me started at how many times I’ve stalled in traffic. I’m trading it in, just hope I can get a few dollars toward a better vehicle. Not going to Hyundai, that’s for sure. Rant over and I’m so angry that if you call me again about a deal I may just give you a piece of my mind. NO THANKS Not a happy owner of a 4 yr Hyundai Tucson 2016.

Mal-function of Transmission and Engine

Tarek ELgendy, 08/29/2022

Car: 2016 Hyundai Tuscan 1.6 T 4D4 COLOR : RED TRIM: LIMITED I bought the Hyundai Tuscan SUV back on 26 October 2016, it was the first car I bought, and was simply manipulated by the dealer sales rep. he got me convinced that Hyundai Tuscan 2016 SUV offer included an extended warranty bumper to bumper for 10 years or 160,000 km that made me exclude all compared cars like Toyota CRV who didn’t have extended warranty at the time. The dealership sold me more than 8 K of unnecessary options that I didn’t use such as rust protection tire warranty, theft security etc, and excluded mentioning the extending warranty on the discussions that I had already taken into consideration that it was included ( so why I would pay 8 K extra cad on the car in things I don’t really understand and leave the most important option that is the extended warranty) In less than 1 month of driving the car exactly on 25-Nov-2016 (black Friday) the car made a very high error alarm on the dash with an error code that didn’t stop except when I pulled over on the highway and shut down the car for more than 15 min then it showed the malfunction indicator lamp with high heat coming from the paddle direction and transmission part This indicator kept showing till I took it to the dealership where they said it was perfectly well and nothing wrong with the car After that incident I start feeling some hesitation and slowing down while trying to accelerate from a stop and as usual when going to the dealership – they deny any issue In Jan 2017 I got a recall letter for the transmission issue and send it to the dealership, and they mentioned recall has been done and the car is perfectly well I started experiencing the same transmission issue multiple times after the recall fix and every time I complain to the dealership, they deny any problem I even escalated the issue to camvap but what happened was really frustrating and not fair camvap spent really long investigation time with a very lengthy process that exceeded 6 months and they did not use any third party to check the car (only approved Hyundai dealership results that was believed as a fact) so as a result of making Hyundai the only source of the car status, it was obvious that the results will deny any issues and at the end, CAMVAP gave me the offer to pay 10000 cad to return the car (finance) which was impossible to do at the time, they didn’t push for extended warranty or any other guarantee to insure transmission support, they even mentioned that I cannot sue Hyundai by signing with camvap it was a disaster experience that makes you feel Hyundai and camvap both worked against me. I lived with the car till 2019 with very cautious usage and regular maintenance through the dealership and even changing tires and fixing lights through the dealership The transmission issue was still happening with increased deterioration of performance, from mid-2019 to the end of 2021 I almost rarely used the car during the pandemic which is why I started having a long time between maintenance On 19 Jan 2022, I took it to the dealership to change the oil and was surprised that they told me I have a serious issue with the engine, and I am out of warranty I told them to double-check the extended warranty to know that there is no extended warranty on the SUV and there is no extended warranty on the transmission recall (which is strange for recall issues all over the world) and no extended warranty on the engine I made all types of escalation through the dealership and even send to Hyundai Canada and all my complaints were refused I took the car for a checkup for the first time in my life to a third-party service center to inform me that I do have serious engine and transmission issues, they also informed me that the automatic portable device that checks engine error codes are not retrieving any error codes from the car by mean someone on the dealership has disconnected the electronic diagnostic device on the car It is clear for me now that the dealership has simply manipulated the vehicle diagnostic electronics to avoid any errors on the engine and transmission during the warranty period and surprise me with the car status after the warranty has gone Now in less than 5 years of proper driving and maintenance and the last 2 years due to Covid rare usage, the car is falling apart with an engine knocking and about to fail and transmission hesitation and about to fail that will cost me a fortune to fix it

Loved it but I’m scared!!

I absolutely love this car. I’m 21. It’s the first car I have ever purchased on my own. My mom, my grandpa, and my dad test drove it for me because it was coming from a small dealership. They all said it was fine. I even test drove it myself and loved it. The color (caribbean blue) is so pretty, the car has nice features inside, and the gas mileage is PERFECT. Here is the horrible part… a month after i purchased the vehicle with 69,000 miles on it, it broke down and I was told the engine was faulty and I would need a replacement. Luckily, the dealership sold it to me KNOWING it had issues and sold me a warranty that covered the engine replacement. I had so many issues with Hyundai trying to get them to work on it because no one else will work on your Hyundai, only a Hyundai dealership, in which they are all horrible and are unable to do their jobs correctly… Other than that, I love the car. I got a new engine with about 40,000 miles on it but Hyundai doesn’t make the engine anymore so I have an engine from another car. I’m terrified my warranty will be up in a year and my car will break down again and I’ll have no way of paying for it… I was told this car was a great car with no problems, but apparently there is a lot of issues with the engines. I would not recommend buying due to the inevitable issues with the engines.

Bought the KIA Sportage variant instead. Bigger engine ,a hair better built, same bad gas mileage, much better price. All in all either of them would be great. This new, from the ground up, total rebuild, produces a vehicle with Swisswatch precision quality parts, build, engineering, and great styleing. It's the best out there in either the KIA or Hyundai name plates.

FRONT SEAT SO UNCOMFORTABLE..WON'T DO A THING!

For such a new 2016 car the front seat is so uncomfortable and went to the dealer 3x's and they wouldn't do a thing except tell me to buy a cushion...That would get in the way of the heated and A/C seat that I paid for? And Hundai themselves only noted this and so far won't do a thing??? So I am to drive for years and be uncomfortable after paying so much?? That is not a good company if you ask me!

I wouldn't think in a modern car that speaker quality on the loaded model would be an issue but these speakers are flat. No depth, lots of drop out at high volume. very disappointing. The rest of the car is great.

JUNK!! Transmission & Engine DEFECTS! AVOID

Money pit vehicles are the worst! 02/2024: UPDATE: Pending class action lawsuit for the ABS causing fires. Hyundai is truly a study in how to make cheap cars that are terrible automobiles. This vehicle burns oil like crazy, and it's a well documented issue. All of them do this eventually. So all the engines are trash. The mfr. is in negotiations with the US Government about engine failures. The transmission is also under major recall now, with a settlement offer out to all registered owners because it is junk. Also random stupid failures, like air conditioning failure, doors that won't open, and electrical failures. Avoid this vehicle. Whether new or used, there's a reason it's cheaper than comparable vehicles, and that's because it's cheaper.

Nice car and you get a lot for the price. A couple of issues: the car is underpowered. The care seemed to struggle under hard acceleration. To me 175 hp is anemic. The car does not have seat memory which a car at the price range should and no power folding mirrors which in this day in age should be standard at this price point as well. The car colors are not exactly the best either.

I have a 2016 Hyundai Tuscon that had had a couple of trouble with the engine that so far Hyundai took care of for me. Well this past February, my lest passenger door stop opening, called in cause I saw other cases with the doors gave me a case number and told me to take it in for repairs. Time slip; I didn't worry because i still had the other door till this past weekend. Now they wont cover any door; out of warranty. I have 110,000,000 miles on it. So i need to pay 130.00 for diagnostic for each door, a rental for the week (240.00) and now they say they might need to break the quarter panels to fix the doors. That's seems costly,,,,and all I am told is to give everyone time go figure. So watch how many times you open your car doors; their not in warranty even the 5 years. That's because I drive an hour to and from my work in Houston.

Oil consumption issue

HUGE oil consumption issue, and I have yet to get a dealership or Hyundai to address the problem. Oil change and at 2100 miles afterwards, there will be no oil reading on the dipstick. Ridiculous for anyone to even claim this is normal oil consumption, it certainly is not. This is a motor issue. It would be great if Hyundai opened up to the problem, and fixed it right! I’m on my second catalytic converter now. I guess Hyundai finds it less expensive to keep replacing catalytic converters under federal regulations about every 20k? Not okay. Would have loved the car, but this is a huge problem.

I got my 2016 Limited Tuscon in May and have had numerous transmission issues. The car would not move on acceleration. I turned off the car and after startup it seemed to shift OK. I took it to the dealer and they said it had a recall for transmission slipping. It has happened numerous times since and after many trips to the dealer, I am wanting rid of this car. I do not feel safe driving it!

I bought 2016 Tucson limited turbo brand new three years ago, and it indicates now 68000 miles. There has been no issue so far and all I have done were regular oil changes and replacing air and cabin filters once or twice. It drives perfectly. Couldn't ask for more. Thank you Hyundai.

I love my little SUV! I like being up off the road and having great gas mileage. This car is perfect for me going to work and running errands, I couldn't be more pleased. Also, loving the Bluetooth feature - so convenient. My salesman, Kerry Smith at North Freeway Hyuandai in Houston was so helpful...the process couldn't have been smoother.

After owning my 2016 Tucson for three years, certain features of the vehicle have started to decline. The acceleration is extremely poor in this vehicle. It didn’t have great acceleration when I bought it brand new, but now it’s even worse. I’m honestly not sure that the turbo even makes a difference. It’s still as comfortable as the day I bought it and the interior is holding up well. As used cars go, I have a few rock chips on the hood and some of those have begun to rust. My biggest complaint is with the electrical system. The backup camera glitches and the screen turns black as you’re backing up. The driver side window doesn’t always close on the first try. I’ve had to try 4-5 times on several occasions to get it to roll up. I’m having trouble with the panoramic sunroof. I had to physically drag it closed two weeks ago and I’ve been afraid to open it since. I called the dealership and it’s not covered under warranty. Just to diagnose the problem would have cost me $133. When I turn the entertainment system on, it sometimes continues to circle saying “preparing”. While it goes this, I can’t use the radio, media, Bluetooth, or navigation. I will not buy another new vehicle again and may not buy Hyundai in the future.

Awesome little SUV

I'm 31 years old and I've had about 15 cars in my life. I've never kept any much over a year and haven't ever put much more than about 12k miles on any given car. I purchased my 2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport AWD over a year ago and have almost 18k miles on it and it feels like I just bought it yesterday. Does it do any one particular thing better than any other car I've owned? No. What it does do is EVERYTHING and well! It's comfortable. I use it as a daily driver and have had kids, teens, adults and grandparents in it and never once received any complaints. It drives well, it's quiet, handles well, everything works as it should AND I average 28-30mpg consistently! I've had absolutely none of the transmission issues that others seem to have had -but- you NEED to know that DCTs are inherently odd. Yes it can sometimes be a bit jerky and come off as confused but it quickly figures out how to correct itself and 99% of the time you'd never know it's not a conventional automatic. Compared to my Jetta TDI with a DCT, this one is downright silky. My one complaint is the interior material. Too many hard plastics and the dash scuffs WAY too easily. Aside from that, you will not encounter a better car for the money. It OWNED the snow and ice we had last winter. I ADORE this little car and plan on keeping it for a while!

We no longer have this vehicle. But loved it when we did. We turned in our 2016 in order to get a 2019 Jeep Compass. Our lease has terminated. We enjoyed the Tucson throughout the 3 years. No problems. This was our 3rd Tucson. We decided to lease another brand. We leased the 2016 in August 2016. The improvements over our previous Tucson are huge. However having driven it a little over 16k miles in a little over 2 yrs, I have to agree with many of the comments regarding the dual clutch transmission. The biggest concern/complaint has to do with the delay in the car moving from a stop. I now make sure I have plenty of time to get across an intersection. The dct seems to create an unsafe condition. Having said that the Tucson is quiet, feature rich, well put together, all the safety features are present, and while we had an ac issue, it was fixed in a timely manner and is operating perfectly. Hyundai has great designers for the wheels. I am glad to see that the 2019 Tucson is going more main stream with a traditional 6 speed transmission. Hopefully there’s a bit more sound insulation.

Fantastic 1st SUV

First, let me start by saying it was a fantastic car, I loved everything except 2 small issues. Often starting cold, the first few hundred feet or if you're going very slow, the tranny's 1st gear was squirrely, as if it's looking for a better gear. Nothing dangerous just irritating. I did not renew the BlueLink, so the Nav system often struggled to find POI's near me. I thought the navigation system and the maps were fantastic, until I got the 2019 Santa Fe Ultimate, wow, what an upgrade. Very good MPG, when I bought it new, it averaged 30.5 MPG, when I sold it (34,500 miles) it was averaging 29.5 MPG.

The 2016 Hyundai Tucson 1.6 ... A GREAT CAR!

We have had 8 Hyundai vehicles. They are the best cars, at least for us. Back in 2016 Hyundai offered an Eco Tucson AWD with the 1.6 Turbo. Hands down it has been a GREAT. We do all the required service and change the oil every 4-5000 miles. We now have 60,000 + miles on it, so this is no 200-500 mile review. We have driven this car from coast-to-coast and all places in between and it is not only VERY economical (we get 33 mpg on the highway and 29 Combined). The AWD is a great feature, too. The car is quiet (compared to my 2006 V6 Tucson with 165,000 mi), smooth and comfortable. We highly recommend this vehicle

I totally agree with Christine. I also have had hesitation to jerky acceleration. Love everything else about the car. But I would rather feel safe than have the extra fluff.

We already have a Sonata and a Santa Fe. That’s the reason for getting a gently used Tucson w/the 2.0 o liter GDI engine. The only turbo I owned in the past was a Mitsubishi Mirage. Scary fast but had a teeny lag (turbo lag) from standstill but more than made up for it quickly. Drivers in sports cars, roadsters etc. always asked me what engine I had in there. So, since there wasn’t any nomenclature on the car for a turbo, I got one from the dealer w/Mitsubishi-turbo and stuck it on the back. To avoid the lag I was advised to use the triptronic shifter on manual and after it lept forward like a cat springing out, to engage the automatic mode if I wanted or to drive it in manual mode. Check w/ Hyundai if it’s advisable w/ your Tucson turbo since each system is slightly specific in dynamics. Gluck! 👍

I’ve had nothing but issues starting with duel transmission and then a door handle would not open, then one window at a time till all windows would not work up or down. Now the air is messing up but not when you are driving, only when you stop at a light or stop sign. Will cost me for the pm to diagnose the problem, the passenger mirror will not go in or out but does go up and down, part is ordered and under warranty . This is not some old car, it’s only 4 yrs old. It’s really [non-permissible content removed] . Ok done ranting, trading it in this weekend. 2016 Hyundai Tuscan Sport Good Luck with this vehicle 👎🏼

Purchased a 2016 in 2019 and noticed a stuttering on the test drives. Salesman downplayed/ ignored the issue. Fast forward a little more than a year later, my car is still stuttering upon acceleration, left rear passenger door will not open from the inside or outside and my headlights will turn off and on sporadically at night. The stuttering upon acceleration is EXTREMELY frustrating. I have tried different gas types in an attempt to alleviate it, that will only work for a day or two. The headlights shutting off is also alarming as it frequently happens when I am driving on the highway. Currently looking to trade this car in for an alternative compact SUV.

Despite proper maintenance I had to have the engine rebuilt at 35000 miles because of faulty parts (apparently it was about to blow up) but it was covered under warranty. Then 9000 miles later (after the engine had been properly broken in) I got a code for a misfiring cylinder... with a brand new engine that should not be happening. I've had other, smaller issues as well but those take the cake and I honestly want to get rid of it because it's such a hassle and outright unreliable.

Burning oil because of bad rings, cat started to get clogged after the burning oil has no where else to go causing poor acceleration. Stalls at traffic lights and when in low idle for no reason. Many other issues and the dealer simply says it was a bad year for Tucson's. Hyundai won't recall them after taking a bath on the Theta II engines in previous years. Be careful around 80,000 miles. Wound up trading it in because the dealer didn’t know how to fix it. Hyundai needs to step up and recall these road hazards.
