- Part of the first Nexo generation introduced for 2019
Overview
Each year, more and more battery electric cars hit the market, and it appears they're here to stay for the foreseeable future. But as prevalent as EVs are, they can't yet do everything. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles offer zero tailpipe emissions, just like EVs, plus the ability to refuel quickly. The 2022 Hyundai Nexo is one such EV alternative and one of only a handful of hydrogen cars on the market.

EPA Estimated Electric Range
The NEXO will automatically switch to gas when the electric battery is low.Electric cars typically experience 1-2% of range loss per year with slightly faster degradation over the first 50,000 miles as the car settles into its long term state, according to Recurrent's study of 15,000 EVs.

See All PHEV incentivesThe Hyundai Nexo is an SUV that sits roughly in between the compact Tucson and the midsize Santa Fe in terms of size. Its electric motor produces 161 horsepower and 291 lb-ft of torque, while its hydrogen fuel cell and tank provide up to 380 miles of range depending on trim. Like every other fuel cell-powered car, the Nexo is only available in California.
Inside, you'll find an impressive complement of tech features, including a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless charging and adaptive cruise control. Of course, you'll pay a hefty premium for those niceties and the Nexo's futuristic drivetrain. Hyundai gives you three years of free fuel, though with the limited number of hydrogen filling stations you probably shouldn't plan on going too far.
Fuel cell vehicles are rare. The Toyota Mirai is now the Nexo's only hydrogen competitor since the Honda Clarity is no longer available. The Mirai is a sedan, so the Nexo has the utility advantage. Among this small group, the Nexo is the most practical and the best value proposition. However, hydrogen in general isn't ready for prime time due to the limited refueling infrastructure and high vehicle cost.
Which NEXO does Edmunds recommend?

2019 Hyundai NEXO Limited 4dr SUV (electric (fuel cell) DD)
Had it for about 50 days now and still loving it. Lets talk about what others don't. I have had many cars with early active safety features that worked from not so good too ok. Hyundai must have some great coders, because this radar stop and start cruise control is the best of any car I have had. Emergency braking is smooth in and out and does not over-react. Lane departure also … smooth but some bouncing to keep car in lane but seems to be better on some roads than others. Still love having the feature. Auto parking is however hit and miss finding spaces. When it does it works very well. But of course I can park much faster than it does. So kind of not needed unless you just cant park or it is a very tight space or you just want to show off your cool car. More cool is having it pull out to you . Nav system and screen choices are amazing, solid, easy, super clear, intuitive and hi rez graphics. Again the best I have ever had and I have had many luxury cars. Build quality is solid. No squeaks or rattles. Very quiet drive. Road handling is very compliant on rough LA roads. I'm no longer a fan of the firm riding BMWi3. That thing lets you feel a spider when you run over it and is so jittery at high speeds it is not good. This car is heavy but I like the ride. Feels safe. Krell Audio system is really amazing. Their Clar-fi setting beautifully enhances the audio to a quality I have not heard in a car before. Lots of other high end features that all work well. Climate control system also works beautifully. My BMW was a joke with constant manual adjustments needed. This one nails it and is quiet. And I like the star trek bridge control buttons. Old fashioned but once you know the buttons it is fast to use. But in bright sun, it is hard to read them... but the massive touch screen covers everything and more and is very easy to use.
Things to improve. Needs to have user selectable controls for regen braking and it needs stronger regen for one pedal driving. Once you do one pedal you don't want to go back. And also no "creep". I don't like needing to use the auto hold feature. Hyundai, please make these user selectable options and implement on a software update to the car. I know you can do it! Acceleration is plenty good for me. Sure some pure electrics are faster but do you really need that? I can still squirt in front of people when needed in this mid size suv which is pretty great and enough for me. Hey this even comes with top of the line michelin primacy tires. Nice going Hyundai. But, no memory seats in a $60k car. Cmon... big oversight but still not a deal breaker. Just amazing how certain things get left out. And leather seats would be much better than recycled plastic seats. They sit hot, but luckily are ventilated. But they are very comfortable from a form factor and there is quite a bit of legroom front and back. I'm 6'3 and can find great seating positions. Visibility is decent but there are the normal SUV blind spots. Exterior cameras all around are clear and work great. Lane change camera is pretty cool and will take some time getting used to but I can tell you it's a game changer for safety. When you exit the car you get what sounds like a vacuum cleaner sound which I think is some sort of fan/pump clearing out something. only lasts for about 5 seconds so no big deal. Another oddity is no tinted windows. Easy to get your own but keep in mind. Missing rain sensing wipers which I do like. Many more high end features than I can list that all work really well.
But really this car hits more top of the line marks than my previous cars which included loaded models of the BMWi3, Chevy Volt, Infiniti FX45 & Q45 and many more in my car driving history. Never thought I would own a Hyundai, but they have proved they are capable of anything. The tech is amazing, I'm cleaning the air, great mileage ( exceeding the rating) and features and price if you figure the free fuel they give you. I know it's a loss leader for them for the future, so hopefully people will see that indeed clean hydrogen ( which you can get ) is indeed the best thing for the future and clearly available right now in California and some other areas. But having the first high mileage electric drive /hydrogen powered SUV with a great form and technology factor that cant be beat makes this a real winner. Keep it going Hyundai!
smooth and quick acceleration, truly love it

2020 Hyundai NEXO Blue 4dr SUV (electric (fuel cell) DD)
bought it jan 2020, i have put in close to 6k miles (as of august 2020) and enjoy driving it. in los angeles, the closest station is 4 miles away from me, but with 380 miles , it is only a matter of planning ahead. i have fiiled up in 5 minutes at the la canada, hollywood, south pasadena and long beach stations. yet there are other stations in diamond bar, santa monica, woodland … hilss, thousand oaks, santa barbara and others in southern california. the fill up is quick and no big deal, the only drawback i have seen is that there is only one hydrogen pump, so if another hydrogen car is filling up, you have to wait and extra minutes before your turn, but of course , this is not the car's fault, yet hopefully more hydrogen stations are on the way.
and just like an electric car, this car takes off as you accelerate. i have left behind more expensive land rovers, bmw X5, grand cherokkees from the get go, not to mention sedans.
my wife and kids tell me they feel like they are on a plane taking off and landing as the car makes almost airplane sounds accelerating and when shutting down.
i am leasing this vehicle, but now i wish i would have negotiated to buy it at a lower price. i can only hope that the gen nexo in 2023 is more exciting and even longer range than this one, so i can negotiate to buy that one.
my wife likes the AC in this car better than her 2019 car or my other car.
overall, i really enjoy this car, and due to covid, almost every weekend we try to go hiking in santa barbara, solvang, palm spring, the mountains , the beach, etc.
i think drivers should at least test drive it and not rule it out. also you get $7500 federal tax credit if you buy, not lease, but california gives you a $4500 check refund just make sure you apply for rebate within 90days of purchase
Amazing drive, very early stage fuel option

2022 Hyundai NEXO Blue 4dr SUV (electric (fuel cell) DD)
The feature it gives is almost missing in all other cars. Amazing driving experience. It drives smooth, has amazing sound system. Cabin noise is best among almost all cars. Adaptive cruise control is one of best I ever used. The only thing is when fuel scarcity occurs, and I am seeing that improving over the time since I started driving it. Hope we have more and more hydrogen fuel … station and hydrogen cost reduce over the period of time, because this car made me think repeatadly that hydrogen should be future and not pure plug in EV, as refilling is very easy and quick compared to any super charged EV option and implementing infra is also much more feasible when we compre it to EV charging station infra. Hope Toyota, Honda and Hyundai togather make it possible to have this as future instead of EV.

Compare the Hyundai Nexo
Hyundai Nexo vs. Toyota Mirai
Redesigned in 2021, the Toyota Mirai is better-looking than its predecessor. It also has more power and range, estimated at up to 402 miles on a full tank. That beats the Nexo's max of 380 miles, but the Hyundai is more powerful and offers significantly more cargo space (29.6 cubic feet compared to only 9.6 cubes in the Mirai).
Hyundai Nexo vs. Hyundai Ioniq 5
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the Nexo's more conventional alternative fuel sibling. New for 2022, the Ioniq 5 is a low-slung battery electric SUV. It's fairly close in size to the Nexo but has a roomier cabin. The Ioniq 5 offers up to an EPA-estimated 303 miles of range on a full charge, which is less than the Nexo's. It'll also take you longer to recharge. But for everything else, the Ioniq is the superior vehicle.
Hyundai Nexo vs. Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid
Another electrified alternative within the Hyundai lineup is the Tucson Plug-in, which is also new for 2022. The Tucson is close in size to the Nexo but is powered by a four-cylinder gas engine and electric motor combo that's good for 261 hp. The Tucson Plug-in's battery allows the car to be driven an EPA-estimated 33 miles on electric power alone. Once the battery runs out of juice, the gas engine kicks in. Though it's not quite as green as a fuel cell car, a plug-in hybrid could be the best of both worlds since it can run on electric power only but can also be refueled quickly if necessary.
