Champina -- surprised to find a new love!

We purchased our used 2004 Accent GL Sedan last August for $3,600.00. This amazing compact car quickly became our go-to choice -- even for distance travel! She's already been roundtrip from Nebraska to Arizona. We named her "Champina". Our first vehicle is a 2001 Dodge RAM Pickup with every luxury; Champy was bought as Mom's "local errand car". When gas prices topped $3 a gallon, she became our primary transportation. The Accent's fuel economy, comfort and reliablity have won us over; our 15 MPG RAM is reserved for hauling, intown errands and "boys night out!" She has needed only regular maintenance in >15,000 miles of all-weather mountain travel.

10 yr Review - Fantastic value!

I bought this vehicle in 2008 as the third owner (1st yr, rental car company;2nd owner, military who commuted 60 miles each way to base). Bought for $5400 w/55k miles, I drove it for 2yrs locally, going to work, errands on weekend, avg'd 29/city. Took a job 102 miles each way, commuted each day for 18 months, avg'd 35 highway (and it was originally rated at 30mpg)! Mileage at start of job was 70k, 145k when done. Since then, local commute is all-city, avg 28mpg. I now have 170k miles, and the only major expenses I've had are tires, wheel bearings, and FWD axles. Also replaced a few broken door handles, spark plugs, plug wires, & belts, but those are cheap. Most reliable and cheapest car to operate I've EVER owned in 30 years. Edmunds wants an UPDATE: Sold at 175k miles, still going strong. The replacement? A 2013 Hyundai Accent hatchback, of course! These cars are undervalued compared to the value they offer. BTW Edmunds, quit sending me emails telling me to update this review. The vehicle HAS BEEN SOLD! ANOTHER UPDATE: Edmunds wants ANOTHER UPDATE even though I sold the car 6 years ago.

Transmission issue

The car has transmission issue, i thought it is mine only, then after researching the web i found it is very common, it is also pulls to the right, i took it to Firestone, they found a factory error that can not be corrected (it was not that bad), the conclusion is: you get what you pay for, the good thing is parts are kinda cheap compared to other cars.

I owned this car for a little over 2 years about 30,000 miles. I traded in a WRX for this so it was quite different but I needed a better price and gas mileage. It was comfortable got around 30mpg and never had any issues!

I haven't had my Accent long but I LOVE it! It's just the perfect little car. It came equiped with power windows, CD, rear window defoggers..It was a reasonable price and my payments are very low. I had read that many do not like the steering and that it doesn't take bends well because of the small tires. I have not noticed any difference from my previous car. I would advise anyone looking for a nice, inexpensive vehicle to buy the Hyundai Accent!!!

75,000 miles and no problems

I just hit the 75,000 mile mark and haven't had a single problem. I quite literally just change the oil, haven't had to do a single thing except normal routine maintenance like new transmission fluid and timing belt. Highway mileage is great, I average about 33. City mileage is pretty bad, I average about 20. The cars look is pretty bland and the resale value is laughable. But if your thinking about buying this car and you can find it for under 45,000 miles and under 7 thousand bucks I highly recommend it.

I love this little car I just bought it a few months ago as my first car for $3,700 It's been great to me so far, although it feels like I'm not getting the best gas miles I could be getting. My car has around 99,000 miles on it and it's still drives like a dream, it may not be a Lexus but it's still an awesome car, it would be great as someones first car.

This is an absolutely wonderful small car. I use it to go to work everyday. Very very reliable. I am hitting around 35mpg on highway. I have never spent any money to fix anything (there weren't many) yet. Hyundai honors their warranty very well.

I would recommend this car to anyone looking for cheap transportation. I have not had any trouble with this car since the day I bought it. I would like to see Hyundai add more insulation though because the ride can get a little noisy without the radio on.

Basic transportation.

After 25,000 miles the car developed too many squeaks and rattling from doors and seats. During acceleration, engine noise is very high. Extra gear and revised transmission are needed. Automatic transmission lacks finesse and does not compare to Honda Civics or Toyota Corollas. At speed does not corner well. Performance is OK, if prepared to high revving engine and increased (engine) noise. Disappointing fuel consumption for a 1.6 liter engine: did not exceed 33.60 miles/gallon even at 65 on major highways. In short: just basic transportation.

I think the Accent is the best sub- compact car on the market. It competes with the Kia Rio, Toyota Echo and the new Chevy Aveo. I looked at all of those cars and bought the 2004 Accent because of its style, build quality, features, warranty and value.

I have to travel alot around town, it is great on the gas milage and it looks smart. I have always had large vechiles mostly vans so this was a big change, yet a good one, it is fun to drive and the get up and go is nothing like any 4 cyl. engine I have ever driven.

this is overall a competant little automobile. it has excellent power with the 5 speed. good torque and power from the engine. excellent shifting action (especially for an economy car) and the body panel gaps have improved dramatically for a hyundai. it feels like that this car will last forever. the car doesnt squeak or rattle when you go over bumps or little road irregularities. the cabin stays pretty quiet and the engine is quiet and makes a kick ass sophisticated sounds when you shift the manual. the warranty, and the price makes this car perfect for college and new families.

I also drove not only my new Accent but another one. They both have the same steering problem. Resulting in the way the car is made. While driving the goes pulls to the left. I was told that with the torte steering and a small car it will do that and is not a repair issue. As the months went on the pull to the left got worse. It was very hard to handle on the road and I feel it is a driving hazard.

I am a repeat Hyundai owner. My brand new 2003, 4-door, silver Accent with power everything is awesome. It might not be a fancy, expensive sports car, but it is reliable, has an exceptional warranty (just in case), and it's comfy. The new hood design actually gives it a more "esteemed" look. I'm seriously contemplating tricking it out with dark tint, trunk spoiler, spinners and round tail-lights... I know it's only an Accent but it feels like an IS300 to me!! Lots of Love to Hyundai for my Beastie #2!!

I don't own the current year model, I bought a 2001 year model brand new in 8/01. I put 25000 miles on it. I just wanted everyone to know that Hyundai accents are really good cars. It hasn't caused me any problems at all since I got it 2 and a 1/2 years ago. It has started up every time and it is really a good car in the winter. I got my car for $8400 new ( GL with A/C) with free oil for life. I liked the echo but I didn't want to spend $3500 more. The Hyundai accent is a great deal. The warranty is for 10 years. Just shop around for your car. Buy at year end or when the new years cars come in. You'll get good bargins.

I recently bought a 2004 Hyundai Accent sedan. It has automatic trans. and has the popular equipment package. So far I have had no problems w/ it and enjoy driving it. It's comfortable and looks very attractive inside and out. My only complaint is the limited handling on winding roads due to the small tires.

Excellent build quality. The only downfall is a severe handling problem with the small, soft tires. I drive a very windy road to work every day and the Accent is very spooky on some curves. The tires feel like they are going to fold under. It reminds me of the old beetle. It a shame Hyundai can't spend a little more on safer, quality tires and wheels for an otherwise solid car.

I bought this car for my teen age daughter. I'm normally a Honda guy, but with reasonably-equipped Civics pushing up into the high-teens-$, I decided to give the Accent a look. So far, I have been very pleased with this car. The Accent may be one of the best "bang for the buck" cars on the market.

Keep taking it in for transmission problems, will shift hard into gear and out of gear, now accelerator sticking. Dealer can't find problem till it shows up on their computer. Hasn't shown up yet, but still major problems. They ever hear of driving it or looking under the hood? How about a old fashioned mechanic who actually looks for the problem instead of relying on a computer to tell them what's wrong?
