I cannot stand the Honda Pilot Touring
I have owned Honda's all my life. This is my 5th Honda, and it will be my last. Words cannot describe how frustrated and disappointed I am with this vehicle. I test drove the lower level version and thought it was great, but it was a huge mistake to upgrade to the Touring. That infotainment system is a joke. I've almost gotten in accidents just trying to use it. Attempting to control the music/volume is a nightmare. Oh, and when we're using maps the passenger has absolutely no control over the music. The 9-speed transmission is terrible. I feel like my neck hurts after driving because all of the jerking around. I am constantly fighting with this car to be in control. God forbid I have to do something quickly, like get around a stopped car with traffic coming, because the car doesn't react quickly to my foot. I despise this car, and we have it for sale, though no doubt will lose a ton of money on it. I'm so glad we're not the only ones having issues. We have registered the complaint with Honda Motor, and have brought it back to dealership a few times, but they are mostly dismissive of our concerns.

No longer an SUV
The redesigned Pilot is more of a minivan than an SUV. Just sitting behind the wheel makes you feel like your in a minivan with the lack of a center console and flimsy fold down arm rests. The quality of the materials is very good, however it does not drive well. The ride is very smooth, but the steering is very light and does not feel stable. There is a heavy bottom weighted feel that is very weird and unnatural. You really can not feel the road at all. The lane watch feature and the back up camera are welcomed safety features, however the touch screen display is just annoying and is cumbersome to operate. I personally do not like it, nor do I care for the push button start. These are not welcomed features. The one touch seat decline/ movement is a nice feature, but more money and engineering should have gone into the steering and handling to make this a better handling vehicle. Sadly, the salesman told me very few people that have driven the new Pilot have liked the way it handled. I am not sure what Honda was thinking, but they need to go back to the drawing board on this.

Like....don't love
My previous review (based on 2 months of ownership) was not flattering. Lots of hiccups with the car itself and many frustrations with the technology. Fortunately, an update from Honda (which took about 2 hours at the dealer) seemed to have fixed many of those problems. Today, I am 8 months (and 20,000 miles) into ownership and it's better, although deep down, I think I may just be a "minivan mom" as I miss the space a minivan offers. Not sure I would go the SUV route again if given the choice of a "do over". Still a little frustrated with the sound system quality and the technology is only so-so but I've gotten used to it. My biggest complaint is that I have difficulty judging the front end of the car due to its design but I think that's more a function of my height rather than the design of the car. Overall, I like the vehicle.....don't love it, but definitely like it.

Love My Elite
Upgraded from a 07 Rav4 Sport to the Pilot Elite. I started researching different SUV's over a year ago. Decided to get the Highlander, that is until the 2016 Pilot was announced. After the specs were released, I compared the Highlander and Pilot. On paper the Pilot edged out the Highlander enough where I decided to take a chance on a newly redesigned vehicle. To that end I got the extra warranty, just in case. I'm glad I did. A week after I bought the Pilot my wife and I went on a camping trip. With my Rav4, after loading all the camping stuff, the cargo area ( with seats down) was stuffed to the point that I couldn't use my rear view mirror. Not so with the Pilot, plenty of room leftover and I could actually use the rear view mirror. The gape between the captain chairs made loading a little awkward, but we figured it out. The ride was comfortable and quiet. On the twisty roads the Pilot handled great once I learned it's limitations and kept with in them. It's not sporty by any stretch, but it's not sloutch either. After about 700 miles so far, I've been averaging about 22 to 22.5 mpg in mixed driving, 26.2 in streight highway driving. Not bad for this size. The interior is clean and well laid out. Love the ventilated seats. The Garmin nav works great and the infotainment system in general is responsive and fairly easy to use. It didn't take me long to figure things out with the manual and just playing around on my own. The Honda Sense tech works well, the ACC is my favorite feature. One thing about the follow distance is even at the lowest setting it's still pretty large. I think it's set that way for safety, in case of a panic stop situation you still have enough room to break and maneuver. This doesn't bother me at all, but everyone is different. I also found that the engine shut off gets a little annoying for very short stops (like waiting for the garage door to open or stop signs), but in general it's ok and if I need to I can turn it off. Lane keep does its job especially when I'm tired after a long grave yard shift. blind Spot Monitoring also does its job. Collision avoidance has already paid off for me. The rear view camera has spoiled me. My only gripes are: Why doesn't a SUV, especially one that's $47k, come with a cargo cover, or power folding side mirrors. Also why doesn't Honda include the Blind Spot monitoring in the lower trims, at least as an option. Lastly, what's the deal with only getting the captain chairs in the Elite, why no bench as a option. I love my Pilot. The looks, ride, comfort, tech and mpg. If you're in the market for an SUV, you should really take a hard look at the new Pilot.

Down hill from 2005 pilot
Former owner 2005 pilot my wife loved 2005 pilot and took better than excellent care of it Honda offered a offensive trade in value of $5000 on a new 2016 pilot, even after bring offended with trade in offer and because my wife liked the pilot we had for over 11 years I went ahead and bought the 2016 pilot and gave the 2005 pilot to my daughter. I knew the 2016 pilot was not equipped as well as most other makes in same price range, what didn't know was how poor the quality and function of included equipment is! Interior so called leather looks like cheap plastics, hands free phone system is a joke you can't understand what callers are saying, Honda put in new microphone (didn't help) would like to disable system so it won't interfere with cell phone, back seat entertainment is so difficult for children to use and requires someone in front to help, the kids use iPad instead, also there is no connection in back seat to recharge iPad has to be connected at front seat, Car is under powered if you use fuel economy feature, the only real complaint I had with 2005 pilot was road noise 2016 pilot is little or no better 11 years later, weather striping around doors is as flimsy and cheep as I have ever seen. I have only had car 31/2 months who knows how lt will go from here?

YOUR SAFETY IS AT RISK . CMBS DOES NOT WORK
I have the car for one year and the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) never did work in Stage 2 or Stage 3. Only the warning light comes on. Brakes are never applied. Going more than 10 MPH faster than the car ahead of you, only Stage 1 comes on with a warning notice. No light braking for Stage 2. No hard braking for Stage 3. I am Emergency Vehicle Operator Course trained. I had someone who I know keep a constant speed of 30 MPH and then retested again going 50 MPH. I would approach going 10 MPH faster than the lead car and only Stage 1 warning would activate, even when I was only 10 feet away before I had to manually apply the brakes hard. Apparently Honda/Accura had an earlier issue with the CMBS falsely activating due to being too sensitive. They did a software update but now it is not activating stage 2 or stage 3. This occurs no matter what setting ( long, normal, short) you have the CMBS set to. I brought it in twice to the dealer and although the service tech test drove it and couldn't get the brakes to work the computer stated everything was fine. Honda tech line was also called by the dealer and they said if the computer said there was no errors there is nothing to do. I called Honda Corporation and they also said there was nothing that could be done. Automatic Cruise Control works so it can't be the Radar or camera. This is a 2016 Honda Pilot Elite with CMBS. UPDATE ; have brought in back to dealer 3 times and they say that the computer does not show a problem, there is nothing they can do. Even though they test drove it with me and agree the brakes never come on no matter how close you get to the vehicle in front of you

Fantastic Vehicle, poor radio/entertainment system
Solid! I previously owned a 2007 Pilot, and the 2016 redesign is a major improvement. Side mirror camera, push button start, remote start are a few of my favorite features that I suddenly can't live without. There's not much more praise I can add to the many positive reviews out there. After one year, my pilot was rear ended. The other car was totaled, the pilot was very drivable and showed minimal damage. But there is one huge letdown with the 2016 Pilot -- the entertainment system. Sound quality is fairly poor. The so-called sub woofer didn't to do anything. Everything is controlled with a poorly defined and sluggish touch screen. Need to switch from radio to CD? Touch the screen, wait a bit, touch the screen, wait a bit, etc until you find the right option. Need to turn on the radio but you are wearing gloves? Can't do it without taking off the gloves. I hate Honda's touch screen interface, and I'm a computer geek. It really painful to use. Then there's playing music off of flash drives. Great in concept, but horrible in execution. Besides having to deal with the sluggish UI and lack of a decent volume button, there is also no 'pause/stop'. Also, when you start the car, it begins automatically playing the first track (alphabetically) off the drive. Same song, EVERY TIME you start the car.

good but needs some work
Brakes squeak. After refueling, smell of gasoline in the cabin for several miles before dissipating. Drafty for front passenger. Cabin control doesn't fine tune - heat is on it is hot. No ability to reduce slightly. Seat heaters are on/off also (no such thing as low/hi) Very disappointed with Honda service - unable to troubleshoot or fix any of the problems. Despite all this issues, it is still a good vehicle and fun to drive. I also own an Accord and Odyssey. Odyssey still better for family (3 kids) but Pilot has much better turn radius and has done well in snow/ice this winter. Overall, great vehicle to drive - much better than the previous SUV I had ('97 Explorer). I just expected more from Honda than what I get in service.

Worst Infotainment System in History!
I love many things about the Honda Pilot Elite, but I absolutely "hate" the Infotainment system after 7 weeks and 1,300 miles of usage! It is cumbersome, slow to respond and in no way aids the driver in safe and efficient access to information. When driving, you cannot access the phone book, speed dial (more than the first 3 listings), call history (more than the first 3 listings), touch tones (for automated attendant inputs) and many other features without pulling off the road and stopping the vehicle. VERY DANGEROUS!!! The "rear audio" screen is completely useless other than pausing a DVD. I have found the navigation system to be confusing and missing many standard points of interest. I thought my Garmin database need to be updated, however, Honda in-car tech support was unable to walk me through the update procedure using a thumb drive and USB port as described in the manual. The nav screen will indicate that you need to "take a right" when it is clean you need to take a "left"?? Very poor accuracy and slow to catch up while driving. I spend way to much time "touching the screen" as opposed to looking at the road. Again, VERY DANGEROUS!!! I have used several Infotainment systems and this is absolutely the worst! Voice commands are almost non existent for many screens. My other vehicles would allow me to give voice commands for any topic displayed on the screen or to access a main topic (Nav, FM radio, Map, Phone, Phonebook, Speed Dial, Next Screen, etc.). A dynamic voice command system would alleviate the need to constantly be looking at the screen and touching the screen. There is also many inconsistencies in what can be accessed through the touch screen while driving and what cannot be accessed. The driver is constantly "guessing" about whether to use voice activation or touch or being locked out of the selection. Very poor design, confusing and very user unfriendly. Would not have purchased this vehicle had I known how deficient and cumbersome the Infotainment system is. I cannot understand why Honda would take such a "giant" step back in Infotainment technology, yet take such a giant step forward in all other aspects of the Honda Pilot safety features.

I (used to) feel Elite in my Elite!
I was looking for a great combination of space, high-end amenities (e.g. ventilated seats, blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist etc), comfort as well as something I can take hunting and does well in the snow. The closest thing I could find to the Elite is the new Volvo XC90 which is over $20k more once you add all the same features. I have had a 2004 and a 2008 Pilot so I guess I'm predisposed to the Honda but I looked at nearly everything from $30k-$90k and this is by far the best value. From what I'm hearing from dealers is that this car is rare - three different dealers tol me that they will get 1 Elite trim every 2-3 months so get your order in early! It's early yet but we are getting 31mpg in mixed driving. UPDATE JULY 13, 2016: We have over 16,000 miles on the Pilot and it's running great! averaging 27mpg in mixed driving... higher on long trips. Rock solid reliability. Really comfortable seats. Two complaints: 1) the nav/radio interface is so slow. You hit a button and the response time is about 2-3 seconds. Drives me nuts. Also, it's the only car I own where you can't put in an address while driving. I get the safety factor in the design but I kind of feel like its treating me like a child. An additional feature along the same lines... you cannot move the car while the driver door is open. So if I'm trying to ensure I'm in a parking spot and I open my driver's door to look at the line, the car stops! I almost got whiplash the first time I did that. Again, I get the safety mindset of the engineers but I think they've over done it in a few regards. Still highly recommend! Update January 13, 2017 Ok so I'm not recommending this car anymore. Several things have started to bother me to the point I'm considering trading it! 1) Navigation - HATE it. Slooooooowwww. Cannot believe how slow the response time is. Also, cannot put in an address while car is moving. Cannot look up a phone number while moving. Just awful! 2) Way too "big brother" in terms of safety. If you pull into a parking space and open the door to see if you are on line, you can no longer move the car. It puts itself in park. How dumb is that? I want to move 6-12 inches and It won't let me. 3) Phone interface to radio - really poor. Slow. There are three AUX/ipod/USB options on the screen and it's different each time as to which one will work. 4) Power windows - TAKE 8 SECONDS to go all the way up or all the way down! What are they waiting for? Is that a safety thing? All I know is I get wet a lot longer when I'm at the toll booth or getting my mail from the mailbox. Speed it up dudes! 5) Just turning on the radio is a pain - and (you guessed it!) sloooooowwwwww. Volume control - sloooowwww. Update January 16, 2018 Sold it.

Bad Transmission Valve after only 3 months
Purchased this car a little over 3 months ago. Yesterday we were driving and both the " Transmission System Problem" and "Emission System Problem" error messages came up. The car then started shifting poorly and literally jumping between the lower gears. We had it towed to dealership who's solution was to simply drain the transmission fluid and refill it to the "Honda specified level". The car drives ok at the moment but there is no chance this is a viable long term solution. Incredibly frustrating to buy a brand new car and have issues after only 3 months. We had our last Pilot for 8 plus years without a single issue which is why we stuck with the Pilot for our new car. Clearly we have made a huge mistake.

2016 Honda Pilot Redesigned
Love the 2016 Pilot. Rides and handles well. Economic features include idle shut off when at traffic lights or stopped for short periods. Takes some getting used to and was annoying initially. Push button gear shifter and heated seats are a nice feature. Electronic controls for navigation and phone are also voice activated. Good cargo space with rear seats folded down. Would have loved the panoramic moonroof but only available on the Elite model. Overall good value and worth consideration when shopping for an SUV.

Great for a minivan in disguise
It's a Honda. Solid. Well designed. And despite it being the first automatic transmission I have ever owned, I actually enjoy driving it. It sure does make life with kids easier. I feel quite spoiled without having to spend so much on a luxury vehicle.

Here's the Great Car You Need!
I can't say enough about Honda cars. This is my fifth but not my final Honda. I really appreciate that they're so durable. This Pilot is so comfortable to sit in and to drive. All my passengers have commented during their first ride, "These seats are really comfortable". It's also very roomy; I've hauled a china cabinet in the cargo area! Gas mileage is terrific for such a large vehicle, 28 mpg highway, 22 city. I've never had a repair (43000+ miles) but I do keep routine maintenance up to date. My only complaint about this car regards the infotainment system. Settings require multiple touches to reach the menu you want; for safety, it's best to make adjustments while not driving.

First Honda car
We traded a 2012 Subaru Outback on this Honda Pilot EX AWD. The Pilot has the tow capacity we need for our small camper when in the mountains. Towing with the Pilot is very nice. Much less stress on me. Towing MPG is about the same as the Outback. The backup camera is great for hitching up the camper. The right turn camera is nice for lane changes. My camper has a full time rear view camera which gives a better view for lane changes to either side. We've been seeing the highway MPG increasing as the engine gets some miles on it. We've seen 30 mpg in ECO mode. Its a much bigger car than the Outback so it took a while to get used to. The handling isn't as crisp as the Outback but its fine. So far traction in snow has been good. The first test was demanding - climbing a 4 mile mountainous road in the snow that was not plowed. Coming back down was fine although I was nervous. Four USB ports is very handy. Sometimes all are in use! The large center console keeps our devices out of sight when not in the car. 35K mile update. We often see 27 mpg on the highway. The AWD continues to impress me. The other day, the Pilot backed up the icy driveway easily. The Hyundai Accent (fwd) had a lot of difficulty. 44K mile update: Often see 30 mpg on the highway 47.3K mile update: All of the warning symbols lit up the same time. Car drove OK. Dealer said it was due to the injectors. ??? All 6 were replaced under warranty. Downside is mpg has dropped 3mpg as indicated on the dash. Will be checking mpg the old school way and talk to the service guys. This is the only mechanical problem in 4 years ownership. Cons: 35K update: There is no after market solution for the lack of disc player! No disc player! Its such a standard feature we never even looked for it until we wanted to play a book on CD. The entertainment system sounds fine but very disappointed with the user interface. The touch screen is clumsy and potentially dangerous for the driver to operate. Some options are displayed that this model doesn't have. There are some remote controls on the steering wheel which which help but their functions are limited. Due to the lousy user interface and lack of disc player, the entertainment system is almost never used and missed. 44K update. The Pilot has always had wind noise - more than we expected for a $35K car. Its getting annoying as time goes on. The dealer ran checks on the main causes for wind noise - found nothing to fix. 55K update MPG has been falling since the fuel injectors were replaced on warranty. 70K update MPG has settled at 23.5 mpg combined. 26 mpg highway on regular gas. Towing mpg varies around 13 mpg depending on terrain and wind. The 7year 70K service is expensive at $2100

Love my Pilot, not so much the service dept!!!!!
the radio in my pilot is terrible. We took for a test drive and noticed the quality of the sound was bad. It kept cutting out and fading in and out. The salesperson said it would be no problem getting the problem resolved.....that was over a month ago. Still waiting....still calling....still getting no answers. Well its been three years and still the radio issues are still unresolved and Jay Honda still hasn't contacted me to let me know any updates. When I call I get the same answer....still working on it! Will never buy another vehicle from this dealership!

Honda 2016 Transmission Blackhole
Yesterday after backing 2016 Honda Touring ( 9 speed 2 wheel drive)--29k miles-- out of garage transmission completion froze on middle of street. Got transmission failure screen and emission failure screen. Tried to put in N and push to curb. NO WAY, car would not move. Called dealer and told nothing to do but except tow to dealership. Called towing co. and waited about 2 hrs. By time tow truck arrived problem had somehow reset and was able to move out of street but dealer was closed by then. Next morning drove to dealer without problem and failure messages were off. After day of checking told problem was "probably" sensor in transmission was "probably" caused both failure messages BUT they weren't able to duplicate problem. Only fix appears to be new transmission BUT Even thought code is still in computer they say unless they can duplicate problem they can't replace transmission under warranty. Dealer is keeping car for now and I'm waiting to see what they intend to do. I don't plan on leaving dealer without the problems absolutley fixed. Can't believe it!! Got to be a safety hazard. Tech couldn't say what might happen it transmission fails while on the freeway?? Update. Honda has stepped up and replaced the transmission under the warranty. Happy day. Thanks to the local dealer for there efforts to get this matter resolved.

Big machine
Remarkably quiet and smooth riding. Great acceleration. Auto locking means that I do not have to remember to lock the Honda when I exit! USB ports allow unlimited recording on flash drives, (I have stored over 100 CD albums in my flash drives) Cup holders everywhere store air fresheners, sun block, tissues, etc. I love it, but enter and exit the garage slowly with only 1 1/4 inches of clearance on each side. Is this SUV too wide for your garage at 79.6"? Video behind the car while in reverse really helps and is bright and clear at night. Right side video with hash marks helps me see when it is safe to pull in front of a vehicle in the lane to the right. It is hard to get into the 3rd row seats unless you buy running boards; however, I do not use the third row seats. I have a painter's drop cloth behind the second row of seats and carry my dogs back there. I also like the Bluetooth connection with my cell phone. This is truly a dream machine.

Love the 3rd-gen Pilot
Update 2020-Jan-05: A little over 80000 miles on our 2016 Pilot. No major complaints other than a failed A/C compressor (at ~60000 on the odometer). Sadly, A/C issues continue to be a common theme with vehicles built by Honda ...a manufacturer otherwise noted for their high-quality and longevity still scrimps on A/C component quality? Three out of three Honda's that I've owned have now had A/C issues. The one saving grace is that Honda seems to at least be aware of this and is highly accommodating when A/C components fail on out-of-warranty Honda's. Update 2018-Jan-04: We now have 42000+ trouble-free miles on our 2016 Pilot. It continues to be a very comfortable vehicle and a pleasure to drive. We did have to put new tires on it at around 30,000 miles because we had tire damage to the sidewall (nail) ...and the tire shops don't get too excited about repairing sidewall damage. I put a set of Cooper Tires on it, as Cooper is my preferred brand and have them on all of my vehicles. Update 2017-Jan-04: We've now owned our Pilot for right at 13 months and it now has over 23,000 miles on it. We've had zero issues with the car and it continues to be a joy to drive. If I could afford it, I'd buy another (so that my wife didn't get 90% of the pleasure of driving it). Power is responsive (and fun) ... the steer-by-wire is a breeze to get used to and we are satisfied with the feedback provided in the steering system. Towing: This Pilot is very capable of towing. We pulled our 3500# pop-up camper (it is the 2nd-largest pop-up camper on the market) with ease on a couple of camping trips in 2016. That being said, after trading a Ford F-150 in on our Pilot, I did end-up going back to a pickup for our camping needs. The vast majority of our camping is remote / "in the boonies". On one of our more adventurous trips, the tongue-weight just wasn't our friend and I nearly broke-off one of the rear mudflaps on the Pilot going thru a big dip in forest road we were using to get to our camp spot. After that trip, I searched high-and-low for some sort of aftermarket products that would work with the rear suspension on a Honda Pilot. Unfortunately, I came-up "bupkis" and ended-up buying an older pickup for the remote camping / towing needs (and really needed a truck again for hunting anyway). If / When we go on a family trip that involves towing the camper from KOA to KOA (or well-groomed, "just-off-the-highway" campgrounds), the Pilot will be our go-to vehicle for those trips. Overall, we are very pleased with our Pilot (as we have been with all of our Honda vehicles). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Review: Preface: We've put about 1000 miles on our Pilot so far. We intend to pull our high-wall pop-up camper with our EX-L AWD and have equipped it to handle the 3700 GVWR of the camper. I will edit this review (or add another) once we've had a chance to test-out towing performance. Everything about this mid-size SUV is awesome. Performance, handling, utility, function, comfort ... all hit high marks with us. The Pilot is primarily my wife's vehicle and previously she drove a 2nd-gen Honda CRV. We had looked at the 2nd-gen Pilots and she felt like she was driving a truck (which I liked of course). While it is still certainly a bigger (looking and feeling) vehicle than the CRV, the 3rd-gen Pilot does drive much "smaller" than the previous generations of the Pilot. I will admit that the steering was a little different at first. The feedback is so soft, that I initially believed that the head must be drive-by-wire; however, a quick glance under the dash and there is most definitely a steering shaft from the head down through the firewall. This doesn't make the Pilot difficult to drive or respond to steering adjustments; however, I would prefer just a little more feedback in the system. As we drive it more and more, this becomes much less noticeable (and perhaps break-in is delivering more and more feedback in the system...IDK.) Performance is awesome and loaded-up with 7 has had no problems passing on any roadway. I "accidentally" found out that 100 mph is quickly achieved when passing a very slow group of 3 cars on a remote 2-lane highway. Acceleration from 45 -to- "oops 98" was quite surprising when I made that pass. As mentioned earlier, I am intrigued to see how it pulls our camper. Previously we had been pulling it with a full-size, half-ton truck (V8) and I am expecting our trips will be a little slower and cumbersome. I am hoping to be pleasantly surprised (this 3.5 V6 does have almost as much torque as my truck did.) Overall, I would highly recommend the 3rd-gen Pilot. I'm no car snob (unless we're talking about old muscle cars), but this is the finest vehicle I've ever owned. I am admittedly partial to Honda's as I have been riding, driving, or pushing (mowers) them for four decades now.

Great vehicle (minus the 9-speed tranny)
I would give this vehicle 5 stars if the 9-speed transmission were smooth. It's not, and that's too bad. Didn't catch that on the test drive, but I sure notice it now, generally when doing lower-speed (around-town) driving. Excellent kid hauler/road-trip vehicle. I'm tall, and love the ceiling height and overall comfort & design of the cabin. Rear seating is very well designed, and easy to access - or drop flat for hauling gear. Mileage is good for it's class, and I think the styling is much improved. I just can't understand why they didn't give more consideration to the tranny, and I think the NAVI unit, and perhaps the button-shifting could be a bit more smooth/responsive as well. Looking forward to taking it up to the snow this winter (Sierras). Have been in Volvo + Saab wagons my entire adult life, and it's a nice change to be in such a big honkin' vehicle. Hope this is helpful. Maybe check out the 6-speed, or see if you can live with the 9 on a more urban stoplight-filled test drive. Seems like some folks are not as bothered by it, but I think Honda should come up with an immediate fix. The drive, especially during deceleration at lower speeds = just plain odd.

Very good SUV with small but important flaws
I really wanted to buy this SUV, however Honda overlooked a few small but very important flaws it has. These small things were turned into actual deal breakers for me. Honda could fix these easily, and should, because I can't be the only one having these issues. 1) Dual Armrests. They are very skinny and too close to the seat for me. I'm a bigger guy at 6'3 and my right arm naturally falls on the outside if this armrest. To even stick my elbow on it I have to push my elbow tight into my body. I can do without an armrest for a short journey but what about road trips? Why can't Honda just have a regular armrest like the Pilot used to have or what every other SUV has? This one small detail was the largest deal breaker for me. 2) Why can't Honda have a height adjustable front passenger seat? Even in a 40+ thousand dollar SUV it's not offered? My wife is short at 5'1 and the seat is too low. On a long road trip it would make her car sick. What about children in the front seat? Honda cheaped out on this small detail. That was deal breaker #2. The others next are smaller flaws I could have looked past. 3) Why can't the rear tail gate open higher and be adjustable? In such a large SUV I shouldn't have to duck my head so I don't hit it. The tail gate doesn't go any higher up than my wife's small VW Tiguan does. 4) The drivers lumbar support is not very good. It did not do a good job of giving my lower back support. Other than those 4 simple things I couldn't find anything else I disliked about the Honda Pilot. It's really a shame I couldn't buy it and that the decision not to buy had to based on these simple flaws. These flaws Honda could easily fix for 2017, but I don't think they will. I guess I have to look into the Toyota Highlander next.

Transmission Problems immediately and terrible A/C
My 2016 Honda Pilot has 2600 miles on it and it feels and sounds like it is about to break down. The gears jerk when traveling around town, and a loud grinding noise occurs during acceleration along with jerking. I live in Florida, and my last vehicle was the Honda Oddysey that had poor A/C, and this new Honda Pilot is even worse. I prefer an A/C setting at home of 76 and my Pilot can't seem to get that low in my car when the outside temp is above the mid to high 80's. I have owned the car for 6 weeks, and I am not happy. I don't recommend this vehicle unless you are a mechanic who lives in a fairly cold climate. Update: I have owned this Honda Pilot for a year and a half and have 30,000 miles on it. The transmission is loud, the air conditioning never gets cold enough for hot air blows from the floor vents constantly, the radio will randomly increase volume until it is as loud as the volume goes and you can't use the controls to turn it down (it has to be turned off and then back on in order to turn it down -- annoying!), and the vehicle rattles while driving, especially on bumpy roads, as if the shocks were broken. I really regret owning this vehicle, especially because the air conditioning is so poor. Even in the winter here in Florida, it was cooler outside (75 degrees) than I could get the air conditioner to cool. I don't like rolling the windows down, especially on the highway, but I also don't like sweating. For the passengers in the middle, there is one vent on the back of the console near the floor. All my passengers complain that they are hot, and my 16-year-old gets nauseated. In my last vehicle, the air came from the top and blew in his face, so when he was a little car sick, he would just have the air blow on his face. Now he has to put his face in the floor or out of the window. I have no idea how air gets back to the third row, but it stays hot back there.

Shocked by sleak size, handling, & Fuel Econ
I was compelled to review our Pilot after reading the Edmunds 778 mile outcomes. We have 2 small children, a teenager, and two working adults in our family. My husband, a full time student, drives the Pilot to and from class and for daycare pick up and drop off. We use the Pilot for long trips, regular visits to family 500 miles away. Our average fuel combined is MPG is 21.6 - our lifetime is 21.6. We get 28-29 on the highway. The test group for Edmunds obviously drive the car without any attempt to drive responsibly; sorry, but that's my thought. We use the Econ mode, but otherwise drive like reasonable adults with a car full of car seats, strollers, and family stuff. UPDATE: After almost three years with our Pilot and several 6+ hour road trips, we still love it. Mileage remains high, handling top notch. With three adults, two car seats, a dog, and luggage, we travel comfortably. We have just two main complaints: 1. Hand free Tech 2. Car seat space. 1. I find that the Bluetooth will sometimes fail to transfer a call properly to hands free mode, and the call must be ended and re-dialed. Other glitches arise with the hands free system that can only be resolved by turning the car off. These are occasional issues at this point. possibly a software problem that could be updated. I also wish that the stereo dial used for hands free mode were closer to the driver. One shouldn’t have to reach across to manipulate that menu while driving. 2. With two car seats, you must locate one behind the driver and one in the center or you cannot reach the third row because only the passenger side second row seat folds up for third row access. This limits options for families with tall adults (like my 6’4” spouse). If he drives, his seat mashes a rear-facing car seat and a forward facing toddler’s feet will be kicking the back of the driver’s seat. Our 4 year old cannot sit in the car seat behind him when he drives. I wish that there were more adjustability in the positioning of the second row seats to address taller people with young families (2 or more car seats). Overall, we love our car and look forward to driving it until our kids are grown.

I absolutely love my 2016 Honda Pilot ex-l
I bought the 2016 Honda Pilot Ex-L AWD in white pearl with beige leather interior. I traded in my 2009 pilot Ex-L which had 71,000 miles for the 2016 model, and couldn't be happier. The car handles beautifully on the road and accelerates with ease (maybe too much ease, I really have to watch my speedometer!). It is a quiet, smooth ride compared to the 2009 model. The interior is gorgeous. I wasn't sure I'd like the beige leather, but it's a bit darker than I expected when I saw it in person and I loved it. The only complaint I have about the interior is the right arm rest for the driver is small. I was used to resting my entire arm on the big console in the 2009 pilot, and now it's a slim but moveable shadow of what it used to be. The center console lies deeper in between the two front seats making more room for setting your purse or phone down which is why they changed it probably. I have been reading about issues the infotainment center has been giving some people, but I have had no issues whatsoever. I enjoy being able to listen to music from my phone wirelessly and think the sound is great. The Bluetooth and phone system works fine as well with a great connection, I drove through a 1-mile tunnel today and my call never broke up. I have not bought the Honda link (Aha) app after reading the many unfavorable reviews, so I can't speak to that yet, but other than that the infotainment center works great. I don't find it complicated at all and I use the steering wheel controls for the radio, iPod or answering calls while driving so no need to fumbling with the touch screen endangering myself as some people have complained about. I also enjoy how the center screen below the speedometer which tells me the mileage, tire pressure, compass, etc., all super easy to go between using the steering wheel control. I have used the remote starter which is a nice added touch, especially on a cold day in the northeast when my car is outside. I can jump in and it's nice and toasty and ready to go. The storage space is great and the third row seems roomier than the 2009 pilot, though no one has utilized that seat for a trip yet. I absolutely love this vehicle and all the improvements Honda has made. This is my third pilot and by far the best. Good job Honda on making a beautiful, reliable, safe and fun vehicle. I look forward to driving in luxury for years to come.

Hmmmmmm, takes some getting used to.
So, I really like the ride, power, comfort and styling etc. The button controls are all fine but the MM electronic display is overly complicated and is at times senseless. I understand the issues of distracted driving and how manufacturers and laws are trying to mitigate this but...............not being able to enter an adress or use many Nav features while the car is in motion is absurd. One can use voice but this is not always practical. While it may not be a good idea for a diver to get to wrapped up entering an address underway why in the heck should they prevent a passenger from doing so. I mean it is a n 8 passenger vehicle not a 1 seater so it makes perfect sense to let someone access the Nav while driving. Another example is prohibiting any access to the sound controls for the audio. The only way you can adjust bass or treble, fade/balance is to put the car in park. Again, why the heck do they assume that only the driver is in the car with no passenger available to do these things. I have found the overall audion quality to be very poor and not what I expect at all. So there are some things that bug me for sure but with this said I love the vehicle as it is great in some many other ways.

Best SUV on the market!
This is an amazing vehicle! It features a smooth, quiet ride with exceptional visibility. We've owned it since April - 14,000mi so far - two major road trips. It handles beautifully with gas mileage 24.7 overall. The 9-speed transmission is smooth and shifts flawlessly. We purchased the Elite to get all the electronic safety features we could - they all work beautifully. The vehicle is close to being able to drive itself! The fabulous GPS has guided us through 11 states without mistakes! The entertainment system performs well in all functionality including movies. After owning 4 vehicles from Lexus I can honestly say that this SUV is one of the great ones - nice job HONDA!!!

Major Transmission Issues
This is my third Honda Pilot and I'm very disappointed in the quality when it comes to it's performance. The transmission is all over the place! I noticed when the car is cold it has problems shifting gears for the first few minutes at various speeds. The freakiest thing is when you're driving downhill and hit your brakes the car lunges forward jerking everyone in the car. This can be reproduced almost every single time. Very noticeable lag time in acceleration between 20-40 miles an hour seems to try and find the correct gear. Called my Honda dealer and they say they're unaware of these issues (of course) but said maybe they would have a software update that can fix it in the future. Thank God for the internet --glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing these same exact issues. Opening a report with Honda to submit my complaint and hopefully speed up the software update.

awsome supersized super vehicle
Hello, Extremely happy to own my PILOT 2016 EX-L with honda-sensing. It will complete 2 years in July 2017, as i am one of the early owners . Have about 28k mileage as of today, thoroughly enjoyed every second and minute of the ride with pride. AWD system seems to be one of the best as I could feel and see that the vehicle maintains same speed on uphill roads without changing gas pedal pressure, I could see most of the vehicles falling behind irrespective of the brand and AWD or FWD systems they may have, in summary the AWD system somehow manages the power distribution in efficient way which is treat to experience in real life driving. Not a single incidence of disruptive nature, always dependable. Again be yourself and go for what you like, this review in no way to influence anyone's decisions, just real experience.. with due respect to individual choices and all the brands. Purchased exl with honda sensing on 7/22 , currently have 3800 miles, super powerful, steady, responsive vehicle, no issues whatsoever, I do not care m6ch about finger marks on infitainment tab as indicated by some of the respected owners. This vehicle could be compared with some of the best on road, I would not say it will beat cayene or x5 but I have seen that it responds and keeps going on the highways effortlessly with excellent command and agility. By the way , with all due respect to other brands which I reserched and some test driven, i am m very happy to come across few artcles on pilot 2016 and choosing to visit honda dealership with family for test drive, my family and myself were so impressed with external and internal looks so finalized on pilot. Had to struggle to get color & model for few weeks, no discounts from msrp as of 7/22 but extremely happy to have this big beast, lots of space, power, ease to operate...

Great if not for a bad transmission
I really want to enjoy my 2016 Honda Pilot but I cannot ignore the fact that my car shutters at 35/45 MPH and jolts during deceleration. My local Honda Dealership said they found wrong with it and it might be normal car characteristics. That sounds like a cop-out up for a terribly made car... Very disappointing! Update: A/C fan needed to be replaced twice. The shuttering is now very aggresssive and poses safety concerns, need to bring the POS back to the shop. Will likely trade in for fear for safety.

The technology is beyond brutal
I have no idea what happened but the 2016 Honda Pilot elite we bought has the worst touchscreen user interface on planet earth. It's cumbersome, really slow, glitchy and lacking basic features. You have to over-interact with it to get simple stuff accomplished, distracting you from driving therefore creating an unsafe driving experience. The map is correct 50% of the time when giving directions en-route. Also, you can't control the rear entertainment system (dvd) from the front seat, seriously!? You have to pull over, get out and go around to the back to control it. The lane assist is highly unreliable and the Ventilated seats don't work well. All the above has led us to decide we actually are going to have to sell a brand new car we bought 2 weeks ago as we can't live with these issues for another week, let alone years to come. This will be our first and last Honda. Just read all the other reviews of people complaining of the same issues, just brutal.

Transmission failed
I purchased my 2016 Honda Pilot in September of 2015. I was fairly happy with the purchase, but I did notice some unusual transmission experiences. Well this week, it got worse. The gears banged into place and made loud noises. Sometimes it would not shift and just stay in gear with the engine revving really high and then banging into the next gear. The problem? The cooling coil in the transmission failed causing anti-freeze and trans fluid to mix throughout the transmission and the cooling system. According to the dealership, this is the third one they've seen like this in their shop. They also told me that their friends who work at the Acura dealer nearby are having the exact same issue with the MDX. They are going to replace my transmission and flush the cooling system. The car has 18,000 miles on it.

As they say, a fool and his money are soon parted
The Navigation/entertainment system is HORRIBLE. The software ease of use is a nightmare, its like Texting and driving. Brakes are ok and the wind noise is much better compared to my other Pilots. This is my 7th. The push button transmission stinks. When am I going to learn? Will I buy a 2018? Probably. It's like falling in love with a Tramp. Even though she's getting worse, I go back for more.

Terrible Radio Reception
Do not buy a Pilot if you listen to local radio stations. None of the stations are tolerable. They are ALL staticky, volume changing, and fade in and mostly out. I called Honda and they "logged" the issue. The representative did admit that she had heard about this issue before. Another problem is the touch screen being slow to respond. It's frustrating not having a volume knob. The hooks in the cargo area are too high to attach a standard grocery bag. Storage space and compartments are otherwise well thought out. Mileage around town is 22mpg on Eco setting. The ride is smooth and quiet.

Very pleased '16 Pilot owner
After putting over 1300 miles mostly from a road trip, I am very pleased with our decision to go with the 2016 Honda Pilot Touring. The push button shifter took a while to get used to, but I think I have a hang of it. Things I like so far: -Lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control were really amazing on the highway. Can't ever imagine driving without these features on long stretches of highway. -Snappy infotainment system. Was easily able to access my iPhone music & folders. -Very comfortable front and second row seats. -Easy access to third row seats. -Pretty decent gas mileage for a vehicle its size. Idle stop works well, pretty amazed at how smooth it is. -9 speed transmission is very smooth. I have heard of plenty complaints from reviews, but I have had no issues. -Driver seat setting memory. -Low road noise, well, at least compared to the CR-V and Civic that we had. -HDMI port means that I can play videos from my iPhone to the rear entertainment system (it has been a while since I last purchased a physical movie disc). Things I do not like: -No blind spot monitoring, which is only available on the Elite model. Pretty ridiculous, considering how prevalent it is in some of the more basic trims of other automakers. -Infotainment system crashed a couple of times, though it was quickly able to reboot almost instantaneously. -Unable to input navigation unless vehicle comes to a stop. I understand there is the safety concern, but there are times it is the front passenger not the driver that is accessing the navigation. -Voice command for navigation is terrible. Will probably never use it again. -Touch control interface works well except for volume, which can be a pain to quickly adjust. -Remote control from rear entertainment system seems very outdated. While there is an HDMI port in the vehicle, there is no HDMI option listed on the remote. -Cargo space behind 3rd row is small.

Honda Pilot is Elite!!
If you want the Elite Trim you will have to be patient and lucky. Some sales associates that need to make their numbers will push the lower trims. They may tell you there is not much difference in what you get. Do your home work and sit in one yourself. The Elite closes the gap with Acura MDX, Buick Enclave, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Lexus RX etc. You may read reviews that complain about the controls for the radio and navigation. There are some valid annoyances and you can get over them. (Volume can go crazy when switching between sources, i.e. Bluetooth to phone, Bluetooth to FM, iPod to radio.) So turn down your volume a little prior to switching sources.

2016 Touring AWD with Options
Overall I think this is a great vehicle.Yes as many have read there are some issues with Radio sound. Stations go in and out, takes a long time to load music from BT, Sub seems to stay one volume even though you turn it all the way up. It is a dissapointment that Honda did not have Apple car play or Android Auto connectivity to Radio since this is a 2016 and all of its other 2016 vehicles have it. I have had my Touring for 2 1/2 months and had no issues, I drove From NY to AZ and back again. The Navigation is really good.It new accidents and let you know ahead of time and it was almost impossibe to miss a turn because of the split screen which shows the Road signs.Awesome feature. I have almost 8000 miles and have had no issues. Gas milege was great. Just in town I was getting 23 mpg.Thats good for a SUV. On my road trip I was averaging 28 mpg when speed limit was 65-70 on cruise. Over that cruise control and all its guiding features was set to 79 and I was getting around 24-25 with 4 kids, my wife and me, 4 suitcases(third row split double seat folded down) my daughter sat in the single seat third row. The Sensors on the front bumber can get annoying when in parking lot or just parking. Mine registers close objuct aroud 8 inches so when your turning in to a parking space and ther is a car parked it usually goes off. I didnt pay the option for rear bumber sensors. The Side mirrors are great. I wish it had a warning of some kind for the driver. Some competitors have lights that flash or beep. This does not. Road noise was good but wind noise is noticable more. Its still quieter than some newer 2013-14 vehicles ive driven. Warrenty is great. It was $1300 for additional 5 year and 84000 mies. So I have 8 years 120,000 mile warrenty. Its hard to get a deal on Touring and above. Just to get one you have to wait. It took me a week. I was in the right place at the right time. A lot of people have to wait months. Most Pilots still sell at MSRP. I paid 42,500 but got hitch and cooler package for free. I just asked. I did add Lighted rails, mud flaps, chrome strips on doors and rear, window guards, and color match door protectors for a cost. I also had Honda under spray a coating under the vehicle to protect from Rust from salt from the snow, Its guaranteed for 10 years and it cost $800 so I thought it was a good investment. Next year Im sure most of the disliked issues will be resolved but this is what us customers get since we want to be the New Vehicles on the block. I would recommend this 2016 Honda Pilot Touring. If you dont need 8 seats go for the Elite. Update: 1/26/19 So far so good.I have had no issues with tha 9 speed transmission even though there are numerous customers who have. Start/Stop is ok transition but I heard the New 2019 Pilots have that fixed with better transmission. No plans to update for 2016-2018 models. Audio Head unit has no Andriod Auto or Apple Car play. Again Honda has no plans to update 2016 head units. This option is available on 2017 and up models. Driver side window still has a lot of wind noise while driving on freeway and according to customer reviews of the Newer model Pilots, the noise is still visible.

Disregard negative comments! Test it for yourself.
I am seeing a lot of negative comments but if you are expecting a Mercedes GLE for under $35000 then you are dreaming. I bought Pilot LX 2016 for my wife while we own a 2011 Toyota RAV4. And after driving Pilot I sold my RAV4 to buy another Pilot LX. Reasons are : 1)Same 22.5mpg on both even though Pilot is much bigger. 2) Pilot was much smoother and quite (in RAV4 we could not have a conversation in the highway especially with people on 2nd row). 3)Much more powerful and better pickup (my RAV4 was 4 cylinder; can't comment on RAV4 2011 6 cylinder). 4) When we make trips with friends we haul them in our 2 SUVs (3rd row is good enough for 2 people under 6ft or 3 kids; contrary to other SUVs with 3rd row where your head hits the top on each bump. There is no better SUV of same size and at same price in the market today!

Expensive for a little above average
First off before buying a Pilot Elite beware of the following. The Navigation voice activation is useless. After dozens of attempts to utilize voice activation, I have resigned myself to the fact that it just doesn't work at all. I thought that Garmin would have been good, I was mistaken. I t hought the Elite had everything, including dual exhaust, wrong...the CRV does...but not the vehicle that costs 15 grand more. The adaptive cruise control will freak you out when someone enters the lane in front of you in the protected zone. It will panic brake, and thus panic YOU. Again it is useless unless the road is totally clear. I have had issues with the liftgate opening only to immediately close again to clock me in the noggin'. In auto headlight mode, the high beams come on automatically when it feels like it. I am not one to use high beams that often. I have owned many different makes of vehicles, and never had as many issues as I have had with this Honda Pilot. Don't make the same mistake steer clear, without the lane keep assist.

Watch Out -- Lemons are out there
Purchased my 2016 Pilot LX in late July -- what a mistake ; after 300 miles heard a popping noise in chassis / suspension when backing out and steering to move forward - very pronounced; brought in for service and the service rep said it was a bushing; well it re-occurred -- now 1500 miles and it is in the shop again -- guess what -- was told that Honda is aware of the problem BUT while no TSB is out , Honda mechanics tried another fix with the driver's side wheel assembly and frame ... will see how this holds up in a month. Otherwise, the LX remains a very good vehicle ... just that after owning my share of American cars in the '60s and '70s where it was the norm to visit the dealership within a week oe two for defective issues, I have gotten "spoiled" in owning good foreign cars where a visit to the shop is only for scheduled maintenance. Update 12/15/2016- the popping noise has returned -- so much for Honda Quality unless totally built in Japan. Update 12/16/2017 - been to the service dept twice where an attempt was made to fix this problem -- not successful.. so I bought the proverbial lemon
