From Tahoe to Pilot
After seven months of driving I am very pleased with our decision to purchase a 2016 Pilot. After two Tahoes' I found the price point excessive and so began to shop. Initially the redesign of the Pilot appealed to us so we signed up for a test ride, and we were sold. This vehicle is economical to operate, comfortable and offers a very well designed cabin that is more than adequate for two seniors who like to travel and have many grand kids. We have the EX-L model which is responsive on acceleration, and braking, easy on gas and a comfortable ride. My one disappointment is the lack of a CD player, although I managed to import my music on to a thumb drive. It's not the same but works for me. A lot of thought has been given to the interior layout , which is positive and rear passengers remark how comfortable the back seats are vs. our previous Tahoe's which were not. We own a Toyota Solara, Subaru Outback and the Pilot. You really can't go wrong with any of these cars but so far the Toyota and the Honda Pilot are the most economical to maintain. Yes, I would recommend a Pilot for a young family, older folks like us who desire some elbow room and a great travel vehicle. We haul Kayaks on top. Folks seem to complain about the more expensive Pilot models and their transmissions, we have no complaints at 7K miles. UPDATE: I still enjoy this vehicle after 21000 miles, excessive dealer maintenance costs have motivated me to find a qualified Honda mechanic who is not employed/commissioned by the dealer. Update: I'm now up to 45K miles and still very satisfied with our Pilot. The vehicle is comfortable, runs well, is gas efficient and just a dependable and reliable SUV. I stay away from the service at the dealer, they like to drive up the bill. I use a local service provider and I'm very satisfied. Update: At 50K miles the vehicle still delivers a high degree of satisfaction. One thing I've experienced is that after fuel fill-ups, not always, the dash indicator indicates an emission system failure while the vehicles runs fine. This typically goes away after about 50 miles. Other than that I'm still very pleased with this vehicle. Update at 65,000 miles. This Pilot still delivers very good gas mileage, given its size, and is still a pleasure to drive. I maintain the vehicle locally < not at a dealer> and really have no complaints. I did replace the ignition button switch myself, you-tube is your friend, other than that it still runs well. I'm a bit disappointed HONDA is pushing the CVT transmission, my mechanic tells me they are a problem. My Pilot is the EX-L model and has a gear shift while the more expensive models do not ,with the CVT. This may make me switch to Toyota for the next vehicle. I still enjoy the PILOT! At 70,000 miles the Pilot is still going strong, albeit travel has been restricted due to COVID. Regular oil land consistent maintenance ( not performed by HONDA Dealers) performed by a local reputable mechanic seem to make this a well performing SUV. I've replaced tires and still have the original brakes. Gas mileage is very good and I find that using premium gas increased miles per gallon by 5 to 10 percent. This vehicle , in terms of gas mileage, is very good. We are still pleased with the PILOT. Update: October, 2022, At 75.000 miles this Pilot keeps on going with normal maintenance. I would buy another PILOT, except that HONDA has now included the CVT transmission, which my mechanic tells me to stay away from, on their mid to high end models. I discontinued any dealings with my local Honda dealer a long time ago simply because I have an aversion to getting ripped off, they are a den of thieves! Fortunately there are honest mechanics out there who can service this vehicle. This Pilot is a very reliable SUV and gets good gas mileage, if you are gentle on the accelerator. UPDATE: April 2024 - The PILOT now has 88,000 miles and really has been trouble free! Beyond normal maintenance, I have only have to replace the Ignition On/Off switch previously mentioned and have a heat shield welded to stop it from being loose. I finally replaced the original brakes at 86000 . So I have no complaints. Based on this we recently purchased our second PILOT EXL and it has a lot more electronic wizardry to become familiar with. One additional attractive feature of the PILOT is the 6 cylinder engine as opposed to a 4 that is supercharged, which other manufacturers seem to gravitate to. Update: October 2024. Still below 90,000 miles since this is now our secondary vehicle, replaced by a 2024 PILOT. The 2016 Pilot remains a solid performer, good gas mileage and economic to run. No repairs only routine oil changes. Next maintenance at 90K, major one.

Made the right decision
We considered the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander and Subaru Outback, the later being considered largely because of it's mileage. I think we would have been happy with any of the three but we LOVE the Pilot. I read all the reviews on here and elsewhere panning the touch screen entertainment system and complaining about the 9 speed transmission and while I think I understand the reasons I don't agree. We have found the touchscreen to be responsive and easy to use, after you get used to it. It's not extremely intuitive but unless you're just renting the car for a day or two, read the manual. Once you become familiar with it, it's responsive and easy to use. It does have a glossy screen and fingerprints can readily be seen which is a little annoying to my wife. I would say we chose the Pilot over the Highlander for 3 reasons; the AWD system is superior, there's more space in the 3rd row seats and it gets better gas mileage. Mileage was part of the reason we only considered the 9 speed but I really stressed over going with that transmission given all the negative comments. I will say this, it does hunt for gears but it seems that should be expected, I mean it has 9 speeds, all of which are probably passed through before you get to 60 mph. I don't mean its particularly noticeable accelerating to highway speed, quite the contrary, it's smooth as silk accelerating. When it's somewhat noticeable is when it is shifting down at lower speeds, more so going down hill. I don't consider it to be a big issue and I'm satisfied with our choice of the 9 speed. As for my hoped for mileage advantage, so far we are satisfied there. We recently went through the better part of a tank of gas on two trips, mostly highway miles. Over 369.3 miles we averaged 27.02 mpg and no, I'm not relying on the trip computer, said computer claimed 25.5 mpg. Honestly I expected something more like 24 mpg. As for the two trips measured; the first was 120 miles from an altitude of 3,500 ft to around 1,200 ft (trip computer listed 29.5 mpg for that leg) and the second was a round trip for the remainder of the miles. While our average speed for most of the trips was in the 70-75 mph range a good 10 miles was in stop and go traffic (one hour). We kept the vehicle in ECON mode for most of these miles and I do think that makes a significant difference. I don't expect this kind of mileage on all our trips but I do think the 26 mpg hwy rating is fair. I'll let you know what I find in city and combined driving sometime later. Things I'm not crazy about are the Collision Mitigation system which as others have said is a little touchy, especially if you are a somewhat aggressive driver. For my wife it's probably perfect but for me it's too sensitive, especially if I'm in heavy traffic. On the other hand it does have an on/off switch. Same with the lane keep assist system which at times misreads heavy tar lines as road paint (not frequently but sometimes). Also, if you forget you have the system on and go to switch lanes without signaling the system will fight you a little.....as I said, it has an on/off switch too. Overall I like both systems but they can be improved. Finally, the auto-engine-stop system works fine but if you're somewhat aggressive pulling into traffic from a stop you need turn it off or be aware it's on because there is a slight lag if you're quick off the brake to the gas. This system had an on/off switch but unlike the other systems mentioned it must be turned off each time you start the car. Again, this will never be a problem for a cautious driver and it's not very intrusive when it's working but for me, I have to be very aware. All in all, this is a VERY fine piece of machinery that has really impressed us. So far, my wife and I are extremely happy with our choice. We love the car and would recommend it to anyone considering a suv/cross-over AWD.

Third Pilot
This is our third Pilot. One of each body style. This is by far the most comfortable with more driver and passenger leg room. The rear passenger space is much more comfortable also. The rear cargo space isn't quite as wide or as tall as my 2009 Pilot but it seems adequate. My wife misses the lower shelf storage area the 09 Pilot had but overall she is very happy. The one feature I dislike the most is the Auto idle Stop feature. I wish they had it default to off instead of on. Every time I start the car I have to disable it because I don't like the slight hesitation there is when you start from a stop sign or signal. Maddening quite frankly. One problem we have with the car is the plastic face of the navigation screen. It scratched easily. We have always used the supplied microfiber cloth to wipe away fingerprints. Recently we used it and it scratched the face of the unit. The face isn't replaceable and you would have to buy a entire new unit at great expense. Honda should have used a glass face or have a replacement screen available. I have since used several scratch removers that have partially removed the scratches. I then purchased a screen protector that cuts some of the glare and hence the scratches aren't as visible.

HondaPilot stopped then Surges runs red lights
I would NOT recommend it because of unintended acceleration sending you into intersections. This can result in serious injury or death. Dealer keeps saying he does not have authorization from Honda to correct issue. Not enough fatalities to issue a recall! When you go to four way stop with foot off gas on on break it will take you into the intersection. The RPMs goes from 1000 to 2500. This has happened too many times. Possibly a computer chip issue. When this occurs and it does more times that I like you must shift quickly into neutral and coast to a stop and pray no one runs into you. The dealer checked out three times. The touch screen radio also locks up. Tech said radio, breaks and gas to engine are all controlled by computer. Never corrected by dealer. I sent email several times to Honda lawyer in California and she knew of wrecks caused by problem in many states. It is NOT a reliable or save auto. I would NOT recommend it to anyone. I called American Honda customer sevice and they said checking into it. I hope some day that Honda can get their act together. Computer issues is major concern. Honda refuses to correct the issue. Beware of this problem.

This car is DANGEROUS! Worst software ever!
1) Left my wife stranded -- Put the car in reverse, foot on brake, not moving, then pressed the stop button. Car locked her out and wouldn't start. Had to mess with locks and start button for 30 minutes before the car 'reset' itself. 2) Transmission is UNSAFE! -- 9 speed can't find the right gear, car stutters, will LAUNCH you downhill. Low speed driving is terrible, can't maintain a constant speed. Seems like really bad software making gear decisions. 3) Lane assist is DANGEROUS! -- Can't help you at all, will not hold the lane. Hey Honda, either you steer or I steer, but whoever is steering better be really good at it. Steering is NOT a cooperative activity! Don't "assist" me with steering unless it can be trusted. 4) So many little software problems. Remembers the seat position incorrectly. 5) Worst entertainment center ever. Seems designed in 1998. Can't use the nav while moving, seriously? I can mess with the radio all day, using the most confusing and distracting software ever devised, but I can't use the nav? 6) The car 'Dings' at uss constantly and randomly. It's trying to tell us something, I have no idea what it is saying. DING .. wait a few minutes -- DING! Who wrote the software for this car, my kids could have done a better job!

Brand New 2016 Lemony Pilot! Check Owner Reviews
Worst mistake I ever made was buying a brand new 2016 Honda Pilot! My 2016 Pilot was purchased new in March 2016. I Drive about 30k a year so I wanted comfort and a brand that wouldn't leave me stranded as I ran up the miles. Little did I know that the issues would start at 5-7000k miles and by 18,000 mile I would just trade it in for a lose to get out of it and rental cars. May of 2016 my records show...No backup lights! Corrected lights and oil changed. Then the major issues started. First problem was the transmission searching for gears, "that's normal, just v-tec". Second was the AC only blows out of vents at a humid 67 degrees, 55 when they "fixed" it but in the South, that makes the air temp of the car a sticky 87+ depending on the weather, but "that is normal" and leaves you with a sweating butt, back, underarms and forehead. Fuel economy, that's a joke! 13.1 average but "that is my driving style". Fourth, popping in the front end, "cannot duplicate" although it's on safercar.gov as a reported issue. Fifth, put the car in drive and it won't go! Well "that's downhill assist and normal". Sixth, car won't start but that "can't be duplicated and it might have been because the driver didn't press the brake". Seven, no HEAT! So NO AC during the summer and now NO heat during the winter, that is "just the new normal with these new EPA regulations". Eight, the radio may or may not pickup local channels but "that's normal". Nine, the radio and camera dim to where you can't see it, but "can't be duplicated". Ten is when you press the gas to go while rolling and the transmission doesn't catch a gear, that my friends is why I traded this car today. Think turning left and car not going with traffic coming at you. Now I know why people sit at Left on Green when clear traffic lights! So I traded it in for a 4Runner. Info added per Edmunds email for update 6/6/2017: I lost the safety aspect of the survival cage that the Pilot has, my gas mileage is about 5 mpg better in the 4Runner, I lost the roomy comfortable interior and the awesome room of the cargo area and the storage tray in the rear. Other than those items, I have icy AC in a dark Toyota still in the same city and state that Honda said was "normal", I had heat this winter, and best of all....seven months in and I haven't had O.N.E. problem or issue with the 4Runner. Amazing huh? Especially since Honda said it was just me....Run and don't buy a Pilot or at least get a 2008-2015. I have friends who are still rocking theirs at 300k. Update! I’m now 12k into my used 4Runner and it’s been a gem!!

Need new transmission, engine, drive train
We had the same issues with the 9 Speed transmission. Honda advised there was a software upgrade to address the problem so we made an appointment. The day before the appointment, the car overheated. Problem was the transmission cooler leaked coolant into the transmission. Honda is now installing a new transmission and flushing the cooling system. According to the mechanic, there have been other instances where coolant was slowly leaking into the transmission. So we'll see what happens. Honda installed a new transmission under warranty. However, when I asked if the new transmission was improved to eliminate the defects leading to the transmission failure, the Honda service department could not guarantee that the new transmission would not have the same failure in the future. Since the manufacturer warranty on the Pilot is only 60K miles, we purchased an extended warrantee (100K Miles). The new transmission does not shift smoothly and we'll need to have this diagnosed by Honda during our next service.

2016 pilot Elite transmission is crap
Loved the Elite. Great car. Took it to Telluride and San Diego from El Paso during the summer both about 9 hour drives. Splurged for the AWD, top of the line. Last week when I was driving it , I noticed the transmission jerking and not shifting appropriately. Mind you I did two summer cruises in this car. Few days later my wife tells me the car is accelerating in a jerking way. I told her I noticed it too and suggested we take it to the dealer. Guess what, the computer found nothing. The car is not the same. They have a new fancy 9 speed transmission and it has PROBLEMS! I did a quick Google search and I am not alone. Honda is not addressing it , like the Takata air bag issues. BTW I have a 2009 Ridgeline waiting for new air bags to arrive on recall. I will open up a case with Honda North America and take it back to the dealer if the problem persists. I am sure they will say it's my imagination. My options are burn the car, sell the damn thing or trade it in for a lower level pilot with the old 6 speed transmission. I should have known a new model with new this, that new fancy transmission might have new PROBLEMS. My Mercedes CLS 500 the first year they made it has been in the shop more times than I can count. I thought Honda was different than the fancy German cars but I was wrong. It was the Pilot, Audi Q7, Toyota Highlander, and several others with 3 rd row of seats my wife looked at. Honda had the best reviews, picked 2016 SUV of the year. That's why we bought it. Now I am ready to crash the damn thing into the dealership and set it on fire. Buyer be ware. The new fancy 9 speed transmission has problems. Others might not notice it . It can be a subtle difference, but we did because of our summer road trips. I guess a few dozen people have to die for Honda to wake up. Just like the air bags.

crap entertainment and touch screen
Do not buy this unless if you can live with crap entertainment system. Very poor metal cone like sound, smudge touch screen. Biggest issue is entertainment turns off when we stop engine from running. When starting engine, all blue ray unit will start the track from beginning. These vehicles are use for long trips. when having a break and starting again, blue ray also start running from beginning. My family hate this thing. Also would you believe it can only play USB drive when only engine is not running. Soon as engine starts, it says cannot read. Very poor quality.

Serious problems with Sound System and Navigation
Purchased July 2015 - Problems started in September 2015 with navigation and sound system. Navigation screen would go blank - and display a 'Clarion Extraframework has stopped' error. Dealer performed update to navigation system - error has not appeared since but sound system sounds terrible - sounds like an AM radio from the 1950's. Dealer tells us Honda is aware and working on problem - but still no fix and it is now July 2016. Sound system has this problem on XM, FM and memory stick.

Entertainment and Cupholders let it down
The car to drive and own is an improvement on last model, however for 40K I would expect the entertainment system to at least be as good as the one Honda puts in the Fit! There is very limited bluetooth functionality, it is slow and very very frustrating to use due to all the features which can not be used when the car is in motion. The cup holders in the front are next too useless, as they do not hold a cup and are quite small, not an improvement at all. You also have to pay the best part of 1K to get the towing package. I would also expect some sort of USB or Power for the second row. Second and third row access is easy, the performance is great. Not sure why a full LATCH system is not available for the 3rd ROW, it was before.

A/V and transmission problems
I really love this vehicle, but have had some major issues that are starting to cast a shadow over the reliability of Honda. I feel that they pushed to get this vehicle on the market to fast. There are still major bugs that need to be worked out. My touch screen panel blacked out on me at about 3,000 miles. I also have had the transmission "chirping" problem due to radiator fluid leaking into the internal trans cooler. They replaced the transmission and flushed the coolant system. Was supposed to pick it up after two weeks...then it wouldn't start. Was told that they had to replace the whole push button transmission module. Finally got my car back after 21 days, most of this time was "waiting for parts" which I feel is ridiculous with they way things are overnighted now days.

Chronic problems with BlueTooth and Audio System
I purchased my Honda Pilot brand new in January. Within two weeks I started getting error messages on the audio system and the bluetooth system does not work regularly - frequently I get a message saying the the car can not find a phone to connect to - even though the BlueTooth on my phone is turned on and the phone is plugged into the car. I have spent 7 months trying to get Honda to fix this but they can not seem to figure it out - they have told me that many Pilot owners are experiencing the same issue but they do not yet have a solution. I purchased this car for the Hands Free Technology and since it is not working regularly I am in the process of asking Honda to refund my car.

2016 Pilot has exceeded our expectations
I took my time purchasing the new Pilot because of the questionable reviews early on, particularly around the transmission, entertainment system technology, and fit/finish. We have been very pleased with the vehicle overall. I took the car for a lengthy test drive to ensure that I was comfortable with the transmission. While it has a slight lag from a full stop while in Economy mode, I don't feel that is excessive, perhaps because I've owned other fuel efficient vehicles that don't provide immediate acceleration. It does accelerate just fine once it does take off. And I have not experienced any of the gear-searching that early reviewers mentioned. The active safety technology is pretty incredible, particularly for longer highway trips. Auto high-beam headlights, auto wipers, blind spot information system, and adaptive cruise control/lane-keep assist system all make the driving experience almost effortless. Problems with fit and finish from early on appear to have been addressed, as our vehicle has no such issues. The only thing that does feel somewhat unrefined is the Auto Engine Off idle stop functionality, which can be turned off, albeit impermanently. If it is particularly hot or cold, you will likely want to turn off the Econ mode to maximize heating or cooling from the HVAC system. And I still prefer Google Maps on my phone to the Nav system. All in all, we are very happy with our purchase.

Serious transmission trouble.
Our family purchased a 2016 Honda Pilot Elite based on Honda's good reputation and experience we've had with other Honda vehicles. Unfortunately the 2016 Honda Pilot Elite, which comes with the 9 speed transmission, has serious transmission problems . We travel a lot and after owning the vehicle for 1 1/2 years already have 69 thousand miles on our Honda Pilot Elite. Problems with the transmission started at 53 thousand miles while driving on the highway at which time the vehicle's transmission went out unable to shift out of the gear it was in. Multiple display warning lights came on causing us to drop the car off at a Honda dealership out of town while on vacation. The dealership recognized the transmission issue which reset itself after the car was parked in their shop for several hours. Diagnostic testing failed to reveal any defects. After picking up our vehicle which appeared to be functioning normally, the same problems started againg at 69 thousand miles. After bringing our vehicle in to the local Honda dealership additional tests were done. The transmission problem was again recognized by the Honda Service department, however no diagnosis was able to be made after updating software, changing transmission fluid and consulting directly with Honda Corporate. We were lead to deal with Honda Corporate regarding our transmission issue as the vehicle's transmission was now no longer under warranty (ending at 60 thousand miles). Although the initial transmission issue occurred at 53 thousand miles Honda has refused to cover the cost of our transmission. The customer service at Honda Corporate was not what we expected from a reputable company such as Honda. Our Honda has been in the shop for 1 1/2 weeks now without having any work done on it since Honda will not agree to cover our transmission problem. Since the Honda dealership was unable to diagnose the transmission problem while under warranty, they felt justified in passing the bill to us, the Honda customer. We followed the Honda maintenance schedule and brought the vehicle in when the service lights presented themselves on our display. It is apparently recommended that the Honda Pilot undergo transmission fluid changes every 30 thousand miles costing approximately $250 each service. Our Honda Pilot was at the Honda dealership at 32K and 45K miles and thereafter, it was never recommended to us to change the transmission fluid. Honda Corporate appeared to use this information against us to hold us responsible to pay for the failed transmission. A district manager from Honda made a decision that we'd be responsible for $750 of the repair while Honda would cover the rest of the $6200 transmission. Although better than paying for a new transmission, this problem occurred while under warranty and Honda is not living up to their promise or reputation. The district manager who is responsible for deciding how much the Honda customer is responsible for paying apparently will not speak directly to the Honda customer, interesting to us. We have already incurred the cost of a rental car while on vacation due to this problem and will be without our Honda Pilot for at least 2 1/2 weeks for the transmission repair not including the number of hours dealing with various customer service representatives getting to the point we are at now waiting for our transmission repair. We are disappointed with Honda's handling of our transmission problem which will inevitably affect many more Honda owners in the future as most drivers of these vehicles have yet to place as many miles on the 2016 Honda Pilot as we have.

Great SUV for the money
Pros: Very quiet, smooth riding, handles good for an SUV, high quality interior, fit and finish, loads of interior room, excellent sound system, lots of safety features, can surf the web and watch Youtube videos. Cons: Hondalink doesn't work more often than not, bluetooth drops out occasionally, Wi-fi doesn't always connect to phone (tethering), gas cap cover doesn't fit correctly, no dual exhaust tips, 9 speed transmission acts hesitatingly at low speeds and when downshifting going downhill. Overall, this car is expensive (Elite model), but you get more for your money than most other SUV's. This SUV is actually fun to drive like most Honda's are. It is very quiet and smooth riding on smooth roads. Rough roads, not so much. It is actually quieter than my Mercedes. No car is perfect but this one comes pretty close. I love this car.

2016 Pilot EX-L Hard Shift Issues
Wait on buying this car. Horrible, frequent, but random hard shifting w/ the 6 speed tranny. Wife will not drive it anymore. New 7/2016, we have 6K miles on it and the hard shifting is damaging the whole drive train.. Horrible new car experience. Car is at the dealer for the 3rd time on this as I post this. Still a pleasure to drive....
I have had the Pilot Elite for almost five years now and have over 60,000 miles on the clock. City driving is a pleasure and loads of boot space with second row UP for all of my guitars, bagpipes, amps and speakers! Trips to Chicago, South Carolina, Tennessee, cross country to Glacier National Park and Washington State, Acadia National Park, cross country to Vancouver, Canada, Georgia and recently to Toronto and Kingston, Ontario. The car performs well, I am getting over 26 mpg on highway driving, the adaptive cruise control is magic. Rear entertainment system kept my daughter entertained for first year but now obsolete. Dealerships are GREAT and, when I had a strange noise coming from my wheel in Keystone, SD I had a fantastic dealer experience in Rapid City where they fit me in and removed a stone from brakes. Also Honda in Vancouver and Chicago for fitting new emergency tires! The car is comfortable to drive, really LOVE the cooled front seats in the hot humid summer, great visibility and good looking too! I could moan about the GPS or Pandora interface but expect that Honda is just as impatient with these issues as we are. I would definitely recommend this family vehicle. Loads of space, too, for visits to Home Depot!!

Update after 2 years: no more love for this car
Update number 2: At 40k miles the transmission was replaced by the dealership under the extended warranty. The new transmission had the same bad behavior as the first, albeit with no squeaks. I sold the car shortly after. Honda lost me as a customer, likely permanently. Update: I have now owned the car almost two years. I would likely not buy another Pilot until they update the transmission. First to second is slow to shift and not smooth, there are times it take 5 seconds to go from reverse to drive, and it can be very slow to downshift. I also get a slow speed downshift squeak that is repeatable but the dealership can’t fix. I have had some minor other issues with the stereo (random clicking and popping) and a squeaky drivers side door during driving. The start stop feature is terribly implemented and it annoys me that I cannot permanently disable it. This could be a great car but Honda chose gas mileage above drivability. The transmission is a deal killer and would keep away from any car with the horrible ZF 9 speed. I will reconsider driving one when the new 10 speed is implemented. On a non Typical note for Honda- why in the world would they implement a navigation system that has audio notifications of traffic when the navigation system is off? It makes the stereo randomly beep for no reason even if the traffic is many miles ahead. Stupidest engineering choice I have seen in a vehicle in a long time. Original: After two weeks of ownership I have virtually no buyers remorse. I feel I must preface this review by stating that it is based in comparison off my previous vehicle, a 2010 Audi Q5 3.2, which was a great car with virtually no issues at 92k miles. This car is vastly different, but that is ok. It is big. In fact, surprising big for most people who have seen it. There really is a ton of room, recently taken 4 tall young adults and 2 parents on a two hour trip with no complaints, even from the third row. The ride is on the soft side, but I knew this was not going to a sporty small German SUV. You can feel the weight through turns but there is minimal body lean and the extra weight makes this thing a exemplary freeway cruiser. It is far quieter than the Audi and the chassis seems more solid with far less shutter with sudden bumps in the road. The interior materials are fine for the most part. I would have liked some wood in the touring model and the piano black gloss trim picks up fingerprints (and I foresee lots of scratches in the future) but otherwise things are soft with little ultra hard plastic. The engine and transmission combo is interesting but I dont find it as bad as some of the magazines have found it to be. Maybe I have a new software version but things generally run smoothly but, given the 9 speeds, it does shift a lot. I have found no issues during deceleration, but around 40-45 and 55-60, the ratios seem like they are too close. Unfortunately, those are common speeds and so if feels like it is searching a bit. The shifts are not abrasive, just frequent. The first gear is also really tall and takes some getting used to. I have found the eco mode to be way too blunted and has earned the nickname "grandma mode" only to be used cruising on flat highways with cruise control on. With eco off, things are fine but you do have to dive deep on the pedal to get any real acceleration. I do wish the sport mode was more sporty. It doesnt seem to alter the throttle response much and just seems to want to hold 2 gears lower than it normally would. In the Audi, sport mode would totally change the demeanor of this vehicle. Increase throttle response, make more aggressive shifting, and hold the appropriate gear longer (and not forever). You can kind of replicate it with the paddles, but I do miss how the Audi was tuned and its too bad here, because this has a great engine. The only regret is probably not splurging for the AWD. The power pretty easily overtakes friction under load and there is mild understeer. I do get great mileage (averaging 26mpg) in mostly SoCal freeway driving. That's 2 mpg better than I was getting in the Audi. The infotainment is fine, but would have been better with at least one knob for volume and power. No Android/Apple play is a bummer in a vehicle this new and expensive and even though it uses a android based system, the ability to add apps is limited to what Honda will allow you to install, which is right now limited to iHeartRadio. I would love to install Waze or Pandora or access one of the app stores from the browser. Overall, its a great vehicle with some small quirks but hits a sweet spot with size, capability, and performance. They will likely sell a ton.

Great Car
After 8 months the SUV is the best thing that could have happened to us. We had some problems with the tail gate but once it was fixed it has been perfect. Its big and spacious for my family of four and has so much space in the trunk for anything I could throw in it. Something my BMW X3 could never hold. Drives well with good pickup. The "infotainment system" needs work and I wish they didn't get rid of a physical volume knob. MPG is 21-22 with mostly highway driving.

Nice SUV except for............
Previously had a 2011 EX-L Pilot. Good vehicle but the EX-L 2016 is better. My 2016 EX-L has just under 60,000 miles on it so I'm into the 4th year of ownership. It's been a very reliable SUV. Mileage is excellent. Get 28 to 29 mpg on the highway and low 20's in city driving. On my second set of tires and they're wearing very well. Only negative thing is the info screen. Cumbersome to operate. Fortunately don't use much of what is offered. Basically listen to Sirius XM and AM radio stations. Would much prefer a knob for dialing up stations but I guess those days are gone. Would rate it 5 stars except for the entertainment technology. Update...…….I believe new Honda may have added radio knob. Guess it was just for volume. Don't like that they did away with the right side outside mirror camera. It is a great safety item. Still a very good automobile. Updated review......now have over 80,000 miles on car. The 2nd set of Firestone Destination L2 continue to wear very well. Very nice SUV and would buy another but don't need too. Update review.....unfortunately at about 82.000 miles had "emission system problem" signal come on. Took it to Honda dealer and they did a scan for $120 and said fuel injectors needed to be replaced. Cost about $1,300. I wasn't happy and service manager said I could try putting fuel injector cleaner in gas tank. So I bought a bottle of Chevron's Techron fuel injector cleaner for five bucks at Walmart and the warning signal went away. Stayed off for a few weeks and than came back but then went away again and has stayed off. (Emission system issue has been a problem with this Honda engine and they've extended the warranty.) Then got a "keyless remote problem" signal. Came on and off over a week or so and than stayed off. However the walk-away auto door lock feature stopped working. Took car to Honda dealer and they worked on it for about an hour and said it could be the result of low battery power even though the battery tests okay. Battery is almost 6 years old. They got the walk-away lock feature working again. Dealer said that if you use the accessory feature when you have an older battery could cause a software issue that in turn can cause various features to stop working. So even though battery still tests "good" I'm going to replace it. Dealer did not charge me for this service call which is much appreciated. Update......got a warranty notification from Honda to replace starting button. Dealer replaced it and haven't had the "emission system problem" since. Have 93,000 miles on car and decided to replace tires although they were still legal. Bought the new Firestone Destination L3 tires and car handles nicely. Only issue now is the Sirius radio channel. Most of the time can't get a signal. However still get both AM and FM channels. Sirius says it's probably an antenna problem. Dealer says it could be a "tuner" issue. Sirius sent me free of charge an add-on radio which I do not want to install in my vehicle. If problem is the antenna the inside of the car ceiling has to be removed and really don't want to do that. Probably will take it to a radio specialist or else just continue to do without. Update.....emission system problem popped up again so dealer replaced my fuel injectors under the extended warranty. No cost to me. Nice! Honda dealer didn't want to mess with the XM radio antenna so I bought a new antenna on line and had a collusion shop install for $50. Total cost under $100.. XM radio now works fine. Replaced battery couple thousand miles ago. Car is running good and plan on keeping it at least until Honda replaces the Pilot with a new model. The 2016 doesn't look any different than the 2022. Update.....car now has 107,000 miles. Because the supply of new cars is so low decided to keep this car until supply gets back to normal. Could be another year or more. Honda recommends the timing belt be changed at around 100,000 miles. Dealer wanted about $1,700 but had it done by a local garage for $630. Expected to see extensive wear on the original timing belt but it looked great. Car continues to run fine but starting to show it's age with small nicks and dings on the finish. Still a very good vehicle. Update: car now has 114,000 miles on it. Recent oil change Honda dealer recommended brakes be replaced. (Still original brakes.) Wanted about $1,000 to do all. My local garage guy said front brakes still had 60% life but back pads needed replacing. Rotors were fine and garage replaced pads - total cost was $160. Car's still running good and plan on keeping it until supply of new cars improves which could be another year or so. Update.....car now has 120,626 miles. Running great. Still getting excellent gas mileage. Change oil & rotate tires every 6,000 miles. My Honda dealer still doesn't have many new cars so I plan on keeping this car especially since we don't drive as much as we previously did. Car now has 134,000 miles on it. Continues to run very well with no issues. Body is getting some minor dings but expected as it's 9 years old. Planning on keeping it as long as it's running well.

2016 Honda pilot Elite
I would not recommend for anyone else to buy a $50k+ SUV or car that is an electrical hot mess. the radio, navigation and entertainment system do not work properly even after an update was done by the dealer recently; it's 9 speed transmission makes noises when changing gears specially at around 27 to 30 MPH; it also some times while driving down hill with your foot on brake wants to accelerate rather than slow down... (not sure if it just another electrical problem and the dealer told me they are not sure is the noise is coming from the transmission) the dealer has not been able to find out what the problem is after 2 days and over 150 miles of test driving it; now they have a field engineer from American Honda coming to take a look at it.

FM RADIO fades in and out constantly!
First off I was told Android auto would work with the 2016 Honda pilot which was not true and secondly the FM radio fades in and out constantly no matter what frequency that you have it on. Its no reception issue. Its not the speed value control. I have taking back to the dealer twice and they cant do anything until Honda Corporation figure it out?

1st 24 Hours/240 Miles
I am a car snob. I prefer to have a loaded SUV that keeps up with the Jones's, but last night I purchased a base LX Pilot to be practical. No leather, no sunroof, no CD, and no XM...oh me! Husband was pleased with my decision to purchase a lesser expensive car than my last four over the past 20 months, God love him! The last car was his choice, GMC Acadia SLT with everything imaginable. Great "entertainment" but awful gas mileage and absolutely no reliability (in my eyes) as I don't like being on side of the road in a 47k vehicle! Anyway, we got rid of it and I started looking for practical car for my 100 mile days. After researching the 2016 Pilot, I was excited but then I couldn't commit because I wanted a more luxurious interior. I drove everything "nice" but couldn't get the Pilot out of my head. The Pilot made sense. After losing so much $ on the past two cars, I worked a deal on a base model and drove away with my new Pilot last night. Since driving off the lot last night, I have put about 130 highway miles and 70 city miles on the Pilot. So far I've used about 1/4 a tank of gas! I have grown to love the simplicity of the radio/Bluetooth/iPod/Heating and AC system as it's nice to be able to drive and touch buttons without having to read a screen or select 70 things! The seats are crazy comfortable! I didn't miss seat warmers today because the cloth is like a nice cozy blanket instead of freezing leather. The armrest, well I hated it until today when I was in and out of the car 100 times! I realized I'm not slumped over on the center console and I was much more comfortable! The cargo tray is my favorite, nothing sliding in the cargo area is amazing! My only two issues today, no sunroof and the sunglasses holder is too small for my big ole sunglasses! So for anyone who wants a solid, comfortable SUV...give it a chance, glad I did!

Completely different from my last one
I previously owed a 2011 touring model. Had no problems. I now own a 2016 Elite. Gas mileage, acceleration, exterior, interior and overall performance is much better than my previous Pilot. The navigation system is a little hard to operate but that may be because I was so familiar with the older version. I do not care for the navigation lock out . It may be a safety feature but it disallows my passenger from making changes to the map and destination while vehicle is in motion. The safety systems, and there are many, seem to work well. I'm a little Leary of the forward collision system so I elect to shut it down. I feel it sometimes over reacts and then is sluggish to retire. There is also a by pass for the engine idle shut off but it has to be activated every time the car is restarted. Wish there was a way to disable this function on a more permanent basis. Front seats do not seem as comfortable as on my 2011 Pilot. That may be due to the seats being ventilated as well as heated. The drivers seat arm rest and front passenger arm rest leave much to be desired in my opinion. They are adjustable up and down but seem very small and rather cheap. Other than those few complaints, I'm very happy with the vehicle so far. May be to soon to give a thumbs up approval because I have only owned this vehicle since January of this year. Update. May 2017 after driving this vehicle for approximately 17 months I can honestly say this is the best automobile purchase I have ever made. Approaching 20,000 miles and it's tight as the first day off the lot. Normally drive at 75 mph on the interstate but yesterday we had an open stretch of road so I decided to see how it preformed at higher speed. At 113 mph it was still very quiet, handled well and still had much power left over. MPG overall is approx 24.4 and 27.6 on the interstate at 75+ MPH. Just an overall great vehicle. Dec. 2017 and 24000 miles. Still love this Pilot. Will probably purchase another one in 2020. June 2018. Vehicle is still tight and actually getting better gas mileage. Had to place two adults in the 3rd row last week. They said comfort was fairly decent at actually had more leg room than expected. Had the hood adjusted because it flexed slightly when meeting trucks at high speed. Think this is due to the light weight material used to curb the overall weight of the vehicle. Still completely happy and looking forward to the 2020 model year. Dec.2018 34,000 miles and everything is still as expected. Quite and tight. The front seats are more comfortable than I first thought. Probably because I’m used to them. Passengers seem to think they are very comfortable. Not as cushy as my 2011 Pilot but seem to conform to my body and I feel less fatigue on long trips. Back seat passengers have no complaints. Dec. 2019. 53000 miles. Other than wiper blades, tire rotations and oil changes I have not had to spend any additional money on this vehicle. Still very quiet and smooth. Updated my navigation system last month free of charge. Went on line and completed in 30 min. The vehicle is preforming so well that I have decided to wait until 2021 to purchase a new one. May need a set of tires in a few months. May 2020. 62,000 and still good as ever. Replaced the tires although they weren’t quite to the “wear marks” that alert you to possibly needing new ones. Believe it or not the best price I found was at the Honda Dealership. Still happy with this vehicle and will replace it next year with a 2021 or maybe 2022.

Test Drive... the Radio - Don't purchase '16 Pilot
Gripe review. This $40K vehicle is not what the quality or integrity I thought I was getting. I have only purchased Honda's for the past 25 years and am sad to say this is my last. Everything about the car was what we expected except that we never used the radio when we test drove it. Once we literally pulled it off the lot and started to listen to the FM stereo we noticed it had an issue. The sound quality was poor. It's volume would go up and down on its own and sounded muffled. I brought it to dealer and make the long story short it's a known defect with my dealer and AHC. BTW - currently there is NO FIX and no ETA. For more details see the following link from Piloteers: http://www.piloteers.org/forums/114-2016-third-generation-pilot/83922-fm-radio-sound-quality-problem.html Here's my question that Honda cannot answer. If this vehicle has all these safety features (Sensing) how can I trust that it even works when I need it when they can't make a basic FM radio?

Engine Temperature problem/Faulty Radiator's
Hi All, I have brought this vehicle in Mar 2016 and not event completed 3-months. I had the following problems with vehicle. 1. After stopping while going forward- clunk or sound of something loses- weard sound. 2. My office commute is 5-miles/day- within 5-miles yesterday i got this alert Engine temperature hot 3. Acceleration raise automatically when you are stopping in signal. I called Honda care and going to the Dealer today and will update. Update from Honda Customer Care: I complaint on Friday 10 Jun 2016, however i haven't received any response from them and their turn around time in 2-days. I got call on 14 Jun 2016 and its disconnected within 2-rings. I tried called daily 4-5 times and left voice messages no message/call back from them. I got a call on today 20 Jun 2016 after getting my car. Service Update: There was a faulty radiator fixed in my Car by the Honda company and this made mixing of coolant/transmission fluid. Now they told that replaced the radiator and some hoses in my car. I dont expect this after spending 50k in my car from the Honda Company. I hope this review will help you. Thanks,

Total miss for Moms
I love just about everything about my Pilot. Lots of room on the inside, comfortable, good storage. However, they missed a couple of VERY VERY VERY important features for a busy, distracted mom. 1) The bluetooth is more of a pain than it is worth. You are limited on dialing while driving - I spend lots of time in stop and go traffic, and that is when I make my calls, but I have to use my phone to make the calls, then transferring over is dicey on whether or not it works. 2) The touchscreen is good in theory, but doesn't translate well to driving and trying to use it. 3) The Pilot also does not have volume knob. It may seem like a small detail, but if you hear a funny sound coming from the kids in the back, and you need IMMEDIATE silence, you won't get it with the Pilot. You don't realize how often you need your radio muted, until you drive this car and realize that you have to hit the volume "area", and then get your finger on the TINY mute button, all the while you have a child puking in your back seat. Or you can choose to use the steering wheel control, and hit the down arrow 47 times. Either way, it is a total nuisance. Had I know this before, I would NOT have bought the car. Its THAT important. My husband thought I was being dramatic, then we took the Pilot on a 3 hour trip. At the end, he agreed the entire touch screen was worthless, and the muting is a real problem.

Horrible transmission problems on 9-speed.
The 2016 Honda Pilot is almost a perfect car except that it has major, major transmission problems that aren't readily evident in just a test drive. We just purchased a 2016 Honda Elite and the transmission really is a mess. It can't find gears correctly, when on a downhill and you brake the car actually speeds up because it upshifts while you are braking, there are head-jerking episodes that are unexplained, when trying to climb hills it downshifts so much that you actually fight the car to try to get it up the hill. We are so disappointed I can't even tell you. We paid $51,000 for this car at a Honda dealer in Northern Virginia and it only has 265 miles on it and my wife refuses to drive it anymore. She was in tears at the dealership and they, so far, have taken no ownership of the problem. By the way, if you think that this is just us then go and look at other reviews on forums for the Pilots on the Internet. It is known that the 9 speed has a real problem. Honda does not seem to be addressing this which is shocking given that it is happening on the 2 highest end models -- Touring and Elite. But I'm getting the feeling that they don't care or don't know how to fix it. With literally just 265 miles on the car we have listed it for sale. We are going to take a major loss on this car and get rid of it right away. I have nothing but the worst feelings about Honda as a company and brand. Do not buy this car. Do not buy this car.

2016 Pilot Touring - Great SUV
Driver Profile: 2000 miles driven in my 2016 Honda Pilot Touring. Also own older model Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Audi (generally high expectations for my vehicles). Extensive on-line research X5, Q60, MDX and Explorer plus, test drove XC90, Highlander, Q7, Lexus GX, Durango, CX9 & Pathfinder. Looking for safety, reliability, relatively good gas mileage, 3rd row seating, value, luxury and style. Final choices: Pilot, XC90 & Highlander. My wife and I both love our new Pilot. Styling, safety features, reliability, usefulness - long trips have been a pleasure with our two young children. Like many, I took note of amazing Pro reviews and some less than perfect Joe reviews. It seems natural to me that less satisfied customers are more likely to make their feelings known. I looked for issues with the 9 speed - for some it is probably just different than what they are use to. I like it. For those who complained about the adaptive cruise control setting and how it leaves too much space in between cars, no problem when set to the closest distance (can't expect Honda to encourage close encounters) . Finger prints on screen? I have bigger things to worry about, it doesn't bother me at all & I will eventually add a protective film as others have suggested. Some complained about the lack of control knobs and speed of LCD display, however, knobs are on steering wheel and speed is generally fine if not spectacular as in the XC90. Ergonomics, including screen size, location & ease of use - outstanding. Second row DVD screen does not interfere with drivers rear view. Push button transmission a problem? Really? At worst, it is an unnecessary feature. Road noise? Non-existent. Folding mirrors (Elite only) would help in NYC, although they protrude less than others. We had one problem: a micro tear in the back seat leather that came from the factory. At first, this was disconcerting, however, Honda took care of it quickly and I can no longer detect its former location. What do I like? Everything. Engine, all wheel drive handling system, turning radius, visibility, manners, comfort, features, gas mileage (in econ mode you are looking at 28-30 mpg on the highway), using regular unleaded & the expected reliability and price retention. I simply love the safety features, especially how the lane assist vibrates and then brings you back to center of lane. Incredible crash ratings. So much space inside, especially in the third row. It drives like a much smaller SUV and, unless you are considering larger vehicles such as the Expedition, Suburban, Escalade - the third row seat space can not be beat. For me, with one exception, the Pilot clearly stood out amongst all vehicles I mentioned. If you are willing to spend $12-15k more for similar features, the XC90 is definitely worth a look. I was scared off by the 4 cylinder super-charged, turbo charged engine - a lot has to go right for this engine to age gracefully. Straight up, I'd even take the 16 Pilot over the 15 MDX (don't like the exterior look and expect the 16 MDX will step it up when released). Final note: It took awhile, however, I realized my visual preference was dependent upon the 20' rims (drives fine), chrome handles, trims and roof rails. They really add something for me. Standard on Touring/Elite, optional on EX, EXL models.

Just passed 9,000
Very happy with my Pilot. My last SUV was a Saturn Outlook, which I was able to get 200,000 miles on. Pilot, in my opinion, looks great. The ride is outstanding and quiet. I upgraded on the stereo, was a little disappointed that it doesn't really rock when I crank it. I did a lot of research and test drives. If you are a bigger guy (6-2 +) this is a great ride. It feels larger in the hip and shoulder area. Also, it has more headroom. The legroom was a little less than my Outlook. I like to stretch my legs out to ride. I know I am rambling. Just wanted to say that I am very happy with my purchase and would encourage you to test drive.

Little scared to drive
I love Hondas. Have had a few. Was excited to purchase the 2016 Honda Pilot. We have had the Honda for 1 year and 2 months..it has approximately 19thousand miles. Unfortunately, as the time increases things are starting to break. The passenger windows have had problems going back up...once down it may take several minutes to get the windows to roll up. The dealership is going to replace some parts and hope this will allow them to work again. The second row Passenger seat broke and was unable to move forward or back..the dealership fixed and I hope the other seats do not have problems. The biggest problem is the transmission. The engine started to make a chirping noise about 2 weeks ago when shifting into 4th gear or when you got to about 10/15 miles. I took it in to find out that it is unable to drive and will take 2 weeks to repair because it needs a new transmission. I find it a little scary after researching on the web that this is a common problem. I contacted the dealership where I purchased the car to express my concern. They suggested I call Honda directly. I have done this and now have a case file and they are to contact me tomorrow. With 3 kids and reading a lot of reviews of transmission problems and brake problems will admit am a little scared to drive once they fix. How do I know that this will not happen again or something else? I can't get over the fact that it has only 19 thousand miles and only about a year old. My husband is ready to trade the car in and call it a loss. Recommend doing a bunch of research before purchasing this type vehicle.

Honda Dropped the Ball
I want other owners to know that I bought a new 2016 Honda Pilot because I bought the first year 2009 Honda Pilot and drove it to 176k with no problems. I liked the old Honda and bought in to the new Honda because of the safety features and improved fuel economy. The bad I can safely say after driving the fist 2,500 miles with the new Honda Pilot, this car is garbage. The fit and finish is horrible (needed to have two of the plastic panels replaced because they warped), needed to have the entire head unit taken off of the car because of an annoying noise (first 100 miles and two days in the shop), now the navigation system doesn't recognize commands, the stereo is anemic and often crackles and hisses. The only way to stop this is to turn the car on an off. So in a total of one month the car has been in the shop for a total of four days. This in comparison to the 2010 that never had an issue. The good The safety features are great. The lane departure, lane assist, adaptive cruise and front end collision all work great. The econ also works great as I am consistently getting 30 mpg combined city and highway. That being said those are the pluses.

Luxury Family SUV
This car is a great compromise for the big family that doesn't want to go "minivan". My 7&10 yo kids love the 3rd row & can get in/out without assistance. 3rd row access for adults is not terrible for the smaller physically fit, but more challenging for the larger or not so athletic (like getting into the back of a 2 door coupe). But once you're there leg room & comfort aren't bad for a 3rd row. If wanting to seat adults in 3rd row, I still suggest minivan with 2nd row captains chairs. Also, since the 2nd row does not offer captains chairs or removable center seat (unless you go Elite trim $$$) it's a bench with a 60:40 split. So if you put 1 car seat in 2nd row, you can access the 3rd on the opposite side. If you put 2 car seats in 2nd row, you can't even get to the 3rd row because you can't fold the seat forward with a car seat on it. So just keep that in mind if you have lots of littles. My 2 are just using the 3rd row, leaving the 2nd for guests. & they have folded the 2nd flat & use it for a foot rest or game surface (cards, battleship) for trips. My kids are happy to have AC vents & controls in the 2nd row, but have been complaining of low air flow in 3rd row vents. I have to crank it on extreme High to get any air into those way back vents. But it has been 100F this month so may just be a summer thing. Overall we absolutely love our Pilot EX. And our insurance rate went down with all the safety specs, despite the hefty purchase price! A very welcome surprise 👍🏻

Goodby Cadillac! Hello Honda Pilot!
I read plenty of reviews. So I will talk about the three negatives I read the most. Radio flat screen. I found easy to get use too operating. I have and android phone. So didnt take long to get used to using. Fingers prints I hate, so I will need cloth and light spray every few days. 2nd was power , Im not a bunch the gas and go sort of driver so I found the smooth acceralaration just great. Plus I keep on econo button. Looks like 20miles per gallon around town. Only owned a week. 3Rd is the arm rest. It is not bad. Does get in the way slightly when doing sharp turns. I'm 6' 3". Gets my elbow. Otherwise Im getting used to arm rest. The sensing feature seems good. Im too new to have an opinion one way or another about lane assist, automatic braking system and the cruise control feature. I did add back up sensors to vehicle. I wanted to hear as well as having a camera in case I came to close to an object. So far extremely pleased with vehicle and like sitting up high. Leather seats are great and. of space.

Entertainment user interface and transmission
I've owned 10 Honda/Acura cars. I am very loyal to the brand because dependability is important to me and so far my experience with Honda has been fantastic. I've pretty much done only scheduled maintenance in over a million miles of driving collectively on all my Honda cars. Honda and Acuras have always been very smooth and have a feeling of 'harmony." That is, everything works together well to provide an excellent driving experience. However, I am seriously considering another brand for my next car for two main reasons. First, the interface for the entertainment system is junk. It is unusable by the driver while driving. Try manipulating a touch screen, the is not always responsive, while staying in your lane or being on a rough road. it's impossible. Also, the voice command is garbage. It almost never works. It does not understand what is said. I've even had it ask me to choose the number of a song. I choose the number - it plays that number - but it is a different song than the one displayed. I can only guess that the system has incorrectly indexed the iPod songs. The multi-controller wheel in the previous generation Pilot is a dramatically better interface. Having a cool looking all touch interface means nothing if it is unusable. The second issue is the 9 speed transmission. One day it can be excellent the next day it is horrible. The shifts can be all wrong making it impossible to drive smoothly, especially around town in stop and go traffic. The transmission surges when applying the brakes. It is very disconcerting to have the car speed up when you step on the brakes. This happens because the transmission often downshift and accelerates the car, or up-shifts and reduces transmission braking when you step on the brakes. It's hard to believe Honda actually drove this transmission and used these radio controls before increasing the car. If they did, they must have known of these issues yet released the car anyway. My faith in Honda engineering is severely shaken. The new Hyundai's are starting to look appealing.

Seemed like a good idea
LA little over a year ago we sought to replace our 2007 Toyota Sequoia. With three growing children, we needed a larger SUV and wanted something more fuel efficient than the Sequoia. The 2016 Pilot seemed like a great choice with a fair amount of cargo space and really cool features. Thought we were lucky when we were one of the first to own the new Pilot in July 2015 but turns out we were not so lucky after all. The good: Technology galore: state of the art transmission that shuts off at stop lights to save fuel, side mirror camera, back up camera, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warnings, accident collision assistance, multiple USB connections, memory seats (I’m 6’4” and my wife is 5’4”)and a touch screen radio with XM radio that has memory and allows me to pause and replay songs. Oh, and whenever I change the channel, it brings me to the beginning of a song currently being played so I don’t have that feeling of “darn, just missed it!”. Fantastic highway gas millage with up to 36 mpg on a 120 mile drive into the Poconos and finally, very easy access to the third row for my 8 year old. The bad: Second row space was not as roomy as I thought and my 6’ teenage son constantly put his knees in the backs of the driver or passenger. Lane departure is flat out annoying with the wheel shake while taking a turn a little tight (sorry, I am an aggressive driver). Fuel door wasn’t flush to the body of the vehicle. Fingerprints all over the radio screen. Adaptive cruise control SLAMS on the breaks when it is not necessary and when driving on a winding road and there is an approaching vehicle on the other said of the road, the Pilot detects that we might have a head on collision. Idle stop did not always work and sometime heisted when starting back up at stop lights. The ugly: My wife HATED this vehicle. Too much technology for her and every so often the radio sound “flickers” and the only remedy is to shut the car off completely and restart (terribly annoying). We even had a couple of occasions when the radio/nav screen was completely blank/off. So while the technology seemed exciting, it needs work. Should have known better to buy a new model. Guess we just expected more from Honda. The result: A year later we traded the Pilot in at a loss for a used 2015 Sequoia Limited which I should have done in the first place. Would have saved me $7K but that is how much we disliked the Pilot. Seeing the transmission problems so many people had, glad we took the loss and moved on. It is a shame because we pretty much owned at least one Honda since 1996. That streak came to an end 20 years later and not sure if/when Honda will be our choice again.

Not what I expected from Honda
Terrible radio, sounds like a 1980 car Low miles per gallon on Econ. Terrible customer service and resolution to problems, after 6 months STILL no solution on radio issue.

2016 Water leak in tailgate of vehicle
I purchased a 2016 Honda Pilot in January 2016. On February 4, 2016, car was in park outside my garage when car started going forward, applyng the brake pedal would not stop vehicle, the car went through our closed garage door and didn't stop until I stomped on the emergency brake. Honda took no responsibility for this malfunction, basically telling me that it didn't happen! I was in the car fearing for my life, so don't tell me that! But my insurance company had the car repaired ($10,000) and I was without my car for 6 weeks. Made first two payments and didn't even have the car.....Honda very hands off. Now, I have water entering the tailgate, no idea where water is coming from. But as usual, Honda is not assuming any responsibility for this either. this is the first and last Honda I will ever own.

Cylinder Problem
After 40K miles the cylinders are shot, no warranty, no help from the dealership for the $1500 repair. I have never owned a car where major engine work was needed in the first 2 years of ownership. Don't buy the Honda Pilot..engine is the worst.

Going strong over 7 years!
My 2016 Honda Pilot continues to be an enjoyable vehicle to drive. I have approximately 70,500 miles on the vehicle and I have no plans to trade it in. I live in snow country and this vehicle gets me where I need to go. The traction selection is a definite plus. The vehicle still provides a comfortable ride, plenty of storage space and very respectable mileage. Since my last review, the vehicle has had normal maintenance. Honda builds a great product! So happy I chose the Pilot over a Toyota Highlander.

Not so happy!!!
Issues so far not resolved are: Settings on command unit like shift to park do not remain set as default. Front end noise like old stiff rubber. Engine miss firing and now wind noise can be heard on driver's door. Maybe there will be some improvement next models year for 2017!

Do not purchase this vehicle! Please read on...
61,000 Miles on the vehicle and emission control lights come on. Took it to the dealership and was advised that we had to foot the bill for fuel injection repair kit ( all 6 injectors, fuel rail, and gas tank fuel filler cap) to the tune of $1,275. When pressed for more details, they stated and I quote “ This has been an issue on Pilots, we had one last week that had the same failure at 41k Miles, we get 1 every two or three weeks”. Needless to say we left dealership and told them to forget it. Go to the Pilot forums and you will get more incidents of this failure, not to mention transmission issues, which also occurs to the 6 speed. We had transmission issues also. I have a 2011 Tundra with 125k Miles, same injectors, 2007 XC70 with 167k Miles, same injectors, 2002 BMW 525i, 205k Miles, yep you guessed it, same injectors. There should be a class action lawsuit against Honda for this Injector issue. Oh and lastly, Honda extended warranty does not cover the “fuel system”. You have been warned. I WILL NEVER OWN A HONDA AGAIN!

WATER LEAKING INTO THE CAR
I have a Honda pilot 2016 LX model, this is my second Honda car. The experience with this car is horrible. Recently, I noticed the water leaking into the car. During the rain in Fremont, CA, the water went inside the car all the way to the floor mat thru the dashboard. I took the car to the local Honda dealer to fix the leaking problem and inspect the dashboard and the floor. Water leaking could spread the rust quickly and may cause some electrical problem. A week later, I got my car back and within 2 days I noticed the water leaking problem is not fixed. I also noticed the metal inside the car dashboard is rusted. I believe, the service center didn’t inspect the dashboard, floor and find the root cause. Now, the car is at the same service center to fix the same problem. The car has not only this problem, it had other problems like remote key was not working, tail light assembly was broken when I got the delivery, screws in rear of vehicle were stripped, takes too long to stop vehicle completely and ON and OFF smoking while driving. The new car has too many issues, I’m also wondering how this car passed the quality control test and testing for water leaking. My main concern is a safety since I have a newborn baby(5 months old) and a kid. I feel traveling with my family in this car may cause issues like computer failure, sensor failure, etc., so I’m avoiding to drive this car with the family. I don’t recommend this car. Honda Customer Service Honda customer service is also worst. I tried to contact the case manager, but I couldn’t reach him to know the status of the car. After several attempts, I reached him, he was simply saying busy with his work and he couldn’t answer all my questions, just saying “he is not a technical person”. I spent $ 35,000 to buy this car and it’s Honda’s responsibility to clarify all customers queries.
Great product ruined by infotainment system
Do not buy a Honda until they replace the current infotainment system! Screen goes dark randomly and often. Back up camera frequently does not come on. Bluetooth hands free intermittently will not make calls and/or drops calls. Dealer replaced system and new one does exactly same thing! No cooperation from Honda. Honda America representative said they have no fix at the current time. Another representative said it could be my phone--IPhone 6splus or carrier--Verizon. Said it may not be compatible even though it works fine about 50% of the time. Car purchased new and now has only 5000 miles. I have filed for arbitration and Honda has suggested I drop the case and then they may be able to offer some help! I will never purchase another Honda.

Still Less Than Expected
This is the first Honda vehicle I have owned. I previously had an Acura, which I enjoyed other than a dashboard rattle that the dealer could never find and, thus, never eradicate. After some research, it seemed as though the Pilot Elite would essentially get me an Acura MDX while saving some money. Not so fast, as I am finding out. I am not having problems with the 9 speed transmission as others have, and mechanically, everything seems to be okay. However, the interior is not comparable to an Acura, in my opinion. The leather isn't as soft and the dash and door panels, while not plastic, aren't as "cushy" as the Acura. I didn't buy an Acura, so I accept these downgrades. This car reminds me in some ways of the stuff old Detroit (the "Big 3") used to put out. Some things were okay, some not so much. My Elite rattles and vibrates even on pavement with only slight imperfections. Some of the body parts needed aligned. The fan circulating the air for heat and defrost sounds like it has a bad bearing as it squeals when it runs. The dealer won't replace it since it still "works". The navigation unit is weak - it tells the driver to make a turn when the car has already passed the turning point. It seems to be off by about 75 feet. The parking sensors are next to useless and the auto braking for collision avoidance activates for no reason at times. As I said, this is my first Honda and most likely will be my last. I may even trade the car in soon and take the "loss". I traded an Infiniti in on the Elite after being less than overwhelmed with the performance of the Infiniti. I have to say that even "stepping down" from a luxury model to the Honda, the Elite is much less than I expected it to be. And, I don't consider myself all that demanding. Just give me value commensurate with the money I am spending. Unfortunately, this Elite isn't doing that! Update after owning the car for 2 years. Everything above still holds true, except the rattling noise. The dealer found the culprit and was able to correct the issue. However, some additional problems came up. The rear hatch closes on its own - the dealer says a new motor needs installed, but they are on backorder. I guess there are many Pilot owners experiencing a similar problem with the hatch. The car is also hesitating when pulling out from a stop - the dealer says everything is as it should be. Umm - no! As I mentioned in my original review, this is my first Honda. After my experience with this Pilot Elite, I will not be buying another Honda. I may not even look at Acuras either.

I cannot stand the Honda Pilot Touring
I have owned Honda's all my life. This is my 5th Honda, and it will be my last. Words cannot describe how frustrated and disappointed I am with this vehicle. I test drove the lower level version and thought it was great, but it was a huge mistake to upgrade to the Touring. That infotainment system is a joke. I've almost gotten in accidents just trying to use it. Attempting to control the music/volume is a nightmare. Oh, and when we're using maps the passenger has absolutely no control over the music. The 9-speed transmission is terrible. I feel like my neck hurts after driving because all of the jerking around. I am constantly fighting with this car to be in control. God forbid I have to do something quickly, like get around a stopped car with traffic coming, because the car doesn't react quickly to my foot. I despise this car, and we have it for sale, though no doubt will lose a ton of money on it. I'm so glad we're not the only ones having issues. We have registered the complaint with Honda Motor, and have brought it back to dealership a few times, but they are mostly dismissive of our concerns.
