Just what I wanted!

Burt, 07/27/2016
2014 Honda Pilot EX 4dr SUV 4WD (3.5L 6cyl 5A)

I purchased my pilot used/off lease in January of 2016 and I think it was quite pricy. I test drove this pilot and a 2014 Durango and I thought the Durango may have been a notch above the pilot in handling however the pilot was by far the smoothest. The Pilot is quiet, tight and a great highway vehicle. Now, I owned a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4 for 10 years and switching to this pilot was night and day! Now, the interior does have a lot of hard surfaces but I think this keeps with the intended mission of the Pilot, it's designed to be a sport utility vehicle. If I wanted plush I sure as hell wouldn't buy a Pilot! Our regular weekend trips to the Poconos was far more enjoyable for me because after 3 hours in the Pilot my back and left leg was no longer sore and numb, this Pilot has great seats! I read the reviews before buying and was concerned about the VCM issue however I have never felt any vibration, as a matter of fact the only way to know is seeing the little ECO light flash on and off. I think the driving position in the Pilot is great, how the pedals, the steering wheel and controls all fall within easy reach. I spent some time setting up the audio and blue tooth and never had any problems. The stereo system works quite well however a few stations I used to pick up with an antenna I can't get with my Pilot. I think the final decision for me was the shape and interior storage, the second row can easily seat 3 adults and the third can easily seat 3 teenagers, with the rear seats down the storage is amazing. With the looks, storage and Honda's stellar reputation this was an easy decision.

Meh - if you want no surprises and can settle....

Alvin, 01/05/2016
2014 Honda Pilot Touring 4dr SUV w/Navigation and Rear Entertainment (3.5L 6cyl 5A)

Brief summary - If you want a predictable vehicle with good resale value, good safety and plenty of room, the 2009-2015 Honda Pilot is the right vehicle for you. If you want some comfort, good looks, updated design (Pilot hasn't changed much since 2009) and modern technology advances (touch screen navigation), look elsewhere. Coming from previous Honda vehicles (Accord, CRV), we almost purchased the Odyssey before settling on the Pilot. Starting with the trim levels, Honda has these pre-designated so it doesn't confuse consumers. The only way to get both navigation and factory entertainment (DVD) system was the Pilot, which had a MSRP of $42k. Note that for the "top of the line" vehicle in 2014, this thing was well behind the times. Not only has there been no major updates to this Pilot since 2009 (when the first ever Samsung Galaxy smartphone was released), it was well behind the competition. The 14 Toyota Highlander came with LED's, adaptive cruise control, panoramic moonroof, blu-ray DVD player, heated steering wheel and the 12-speaker JBL system. The Honda Pilot came with regular lights, regular cruise control, regular moonroof, regular DVD player, regular steering wheel, and regular "premium" sound system. FOR ALMOST THE SAME PRICE ($42k Pilot Touring 4WD vs $43k Highlander Platinum AWD) The Honda is very utilitarian; meaning it serves it's purpose. You want a dependable vehicle that has history of few mechanical issues, good resale value, a lot of interior passenger & cargo room, it is a good vehicle. But on top of a lack of value, it actually is uncomfortable (comparably). Hard leather seats that are far from plush, very hard-plastic interior (same materials as the base Pilot LX...) covers the interior of the vehicle, and a less-than-plush ride. Took a 19 hour road trip over Thanksgiving and it was less-than-desired comfortable, though I have been in worse vehicles. The navigation is an outdated & un-intuitive input system that requires the user to use a knob and turn to the right character, one alphabet at a time...think of a rotary phone but with the whole keyboard as possible options. Also note at 15k and 30k miles, Honda recommends the rear differential fluid to be flushed (~$80-$100 per instance) which wasn't an expected maintenance item. It's in the manual. Also for those who swear by Honda reliablity, google "Honda Pilot VCM" to read through the horror stories many Pilot owners have had with their ENGINE. With the new re-designed 2016 Pilot's now out, you can really get a good deal on a low-mileage late model Pilot because the new one fixes a lot of the issues a lot of the old ones have. We got a decent deal (over $4k off MSRP) when we purchased the 14 Pilot 4WD, at the time of this posting new 15 Pilot 4WD Touring's could be had around the $35k mark with all incentives which is a great deal. PLUS - Good gas mileage (23-24mpg highway is realistic) - Aside from the VCM issue, no major concerns around reliability; a lot of over 100k mile Pilot's still on the road - Great resale value, Honda has done a good job here - Stellar interior room; middle row seats has much leg/hip room as a minivan...without being a minivan - Boxy shape means flexibility to haul a lot of cargo like oversized gifts, bicycles and such - Sound system, for being no-brand, sounds pretty decent NEGATIVE - Comfort, comfort, comfort...almost 2 years into ownership, the seats haven't gotten any better. - Cheap-ish interior material; the fact the leather stains so easily to the very hard plastic that covers the interior of the vehicle from the dash to the door panels, even in the "top of the line" trim is disappointing - Less than plush ride, especially compared to the 14 Pathfinder, 14 Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon, 14 Highlander, 14 Enclave/Traverse/Acadia and even the 14 Durango - Old design, this thing hasn't been refreshed since 2009 when almost all its competitors have come with something new Would I do it again? Absolutely not. Do I regret it? Not really, I am confident this vehicle will run for a long time to come and hold its value respectably. But when you itch to trade the car in almost every month because making car payments on a car that you "settle for", it isn't a good feeling.

Avoid Variable Cylinder Management (VCM)

I am a long time Honda owner (all Accords). I purchased a 2014 Honda Pilot new in April 2014. After two days of owning it, I realized I made a huge mistake. The VCM system causes vibrations and jerks when it transitions from 6, 4 and 3 cylinders. You will not notice on a test drive because the engine has to warm up first for it to engage. Honda posted a software update TSB that helps but did not resolve the problem. If you want to buy a Honda V6 with VCM, insist on a long test drive at speeds greater than 60 on flat roads. I just sold my Pilot for a Sienna - best move ever even if it is a minivan. Toyota knows V6s should run on all 6 cylinders.

Great vehicle but discovering some flaws

The size and Honda reliability are what drew me to the Pilot. I've owned it a little over a year and I'm still pleased but have a few issues. The driver's side sun visor is drooping and after some research it appears this is common with numerous Honda models. The MPGs are about 19; not what Honda rated. There's a clip on the back of the middle seat that pops off. Not thinking it's good for whatever reason it was put there if it pops out when someone is in the seat. Otherwise, the size, storage, features and drivability of the SUV are great. I enjoy driving it!

From the Pilot of a 2014 Honda Pilot Touring

This is a great SUV! Probably one of the best I have had. Very comfortable ride, handles very well, very roomy and also looks classy. The only downfall is the Bluetooth for the phone. It is very crackly and is difficult to hear sometimes. Other than that, I absolutely love, love, love this vehicle and will more than likely purchase another when it comes time to get a new vehicle in the future. Also, this is the first time I have searched out a car on Edmunds and actually driven almost a hundred miles to purchase the car just from a picture on a website. I was very happy when I got to the dealership to see the car looking exactly as it did in the pics online. I will definitely use Edmunds again when I purchase. Thank you so much ...this was a great car buying experience for me, and I have purchased a lot of cars in the past. Thanks again Edmunds. I love my Pilot!

2014 pilot

I love this vehicle!!! If you want a pilot don't get a base model go with the add- ons .We had many vehicles and I will say I've been impressed with the pilot the most . If you take a little bit of time to set up radio, phone, gps WOW!! Towing isn't a problem for me and I tow (outdoor toys rzr, grizzly ,and 2 smaller atvs on my trailer ) . Not a problem and I have gone up Nittany mountain with ease . Kids enjoy the videos and can even play video games with the 120v outlet and easy access video /audio inputs. The lighted steps make it easy to get in and out at night. The dealership is definitely very good as well and we will probably be back for another later on down the line. And if you like being outdoor get them to throw in a tent that attachs to the back it does it all! !

First Pilot, Early Review

We got our pilot about 1 month ago. We love the interior room, and it tows boats great. The rear cargo area has plenty of space with the rear row of seats folded away. Gas mileage has been consistently around 18, with mixed city and highway driving. Best mileage was about 24 hwy, worst mileage was 17 towing, not on highway. I will update the review as I have the suv longer. Update: We traded the pilot in on a new Tahoe. The trade-in value was excellent, we were looking for more towing capacity in a 3 row SUV. The pilot never had one issue, and was great for the 2 years we owned it. I would highly recommend this generation pilot to anyone who needs maximum comfort, space, and reliability at a great price. The towing capacity is not great, but it does tow well within its own limits.

I owe this car for almost 5 years and I did not have a single mechanical issue or issue with peeling paint that other reviews mentioned. Overall the car is very comfortable to ride, the steering wheel is amazingly soft, space is unbelievable. The doors are just the right size to get on and off for adult and kids. The performance is great but I feel car jerking once in awhile switching gears. I love that the car is very wide. It was pretty much the only one vehicle we could fit two car sits with me sitting in the middle in one row with enough shoulder space. What I do not like is the top trim we got with navigation and entertainment system did not include keyless entry and keyless start. The sits are very poorly padded and insanely uncomfortable, both front and back sits are just awefull. The leather interior is not pretty as well as car paint is not sparkling but dull looking. I want also mention that Acura we previously owed had equally awefully uncomfortable sits. The navigation and control panel feel outdated and poorly designed. Also the shift gear handle is in front, right in the middle of everything and every time you try to reach something on the panel like AC or volume, it is on the way. The Mpg is not great. I use this car mostly to drive kids to school and activities and get between 15-17 mpg. I had to make adjustment to my driving habbits to get closer to 19 mpg. Rare highway drives bring 24 mpg the most. I was not sure about entertainment system but it turned out just great. So many speakers provide amazing sound for my CDs, radio reception is good. I even got xm radio to enjoy amazing sound this car provide. Overall we paid 40k for the top trim and I think that is a decent car for the price paid.

I love everything about this vehicle. It is smooth to drive and big on the inside to accommodate a host of people. I love the full sized third row instead of having a two seater, and there are car seat anchors behind every rear seat. This means if I need to move my kids to one side and fold the seats down on the other side for cargo space, I have the option. The rear entertainment system has been a godsend for road trips. It feels solid and sturdy during inclement weather. Anything maintenance wise we have been able to repair for less than $100, so that is a plus. I intend to keep this Honda until the end of its life. Or mine. Quite possible it will outlive me.

Transmission seems weak, shifts goofy. Wandered around when new, Honda said the ball joints needed to seat. Blows around in the wind. Like the rear camera. Front seats are small. MPG is okay. Never over 24. Seats stained from spilled water?

As an owner of a 2005 Honda Pilot EX, and itching to get a new ride, I test drove the 2014 Honda Pilot EX-L while I was getting a new catalytic converter at the dealership. The exterior was beautiful (I'm a fan of the "squarer" bodies and think the new ones blend in with everyone else's vehicle), and the interior was "standard" Honda (definitely not as appealing as a Highlander, but I'm not picky). Everything was great, until I pulled onto the highway... OMG, can I just tell you that my 2005 Pilot has MUCH MORE pick up than the 2014! I have a heavy foot, and when I merge I want to get to the speed limit as soon as possible...well, not with this one. You gotta be kidding me! The salesman said it has something to do with ECON but honestly, its an SUV - I don't care about gas mileage (I know... I should...) Plus there is no way to "save on gas" with the way I drive. What a disappointment!

Was looking at 3 row SUVs to fit the new twins and the dog. Decided on the Pilot over the CX-9 because of cost and dealership. For utility and storage and seating, the Pilot is great. However I feel it lags when it comes to acceleration, even compared to our 2012 CRV. It definitely drives like a truck. Having a little regret because I only use it to drive the whole family once every couple of weeks. Would rather have something more fun to drive. I'm also finding the seat even with all its adjustments, difficult to find the right position as of yet (1 month).

I have 2014 Honda Pilot. I like it very much, but here is the reason why I gave the low rating to it. The check engine light comes on and off. The code indicates that it needs a replacement of catalytic converter. At one Honda service I was charged for checking the code and at another one they replaced catalytic converter for no charge, but the check engine light is still coming on and off. I had several Honda cars. My last Honda accord has about 150000 miles and it also started having the same problem, but for 2 years old engine this is just ridiculous.

its a very nice car, we've wanted a Pilot for a few years. There are some things that should have been standard on the car. no tinted front window, no double visors. USB port very inconveniently placed, no auto locks on door when put in gear. The car does not handle well in the rain, too lightweight. UPDATE: THE PAINT IS PEELING OFF THE ROOF OF MY PILOT. I TOOK IT TO A HONDA DEALERSHIP AND FILED A CLAIM BUT THEY ARE DRAGGING THEIR FEET TRYING TO DECIDE "IF" THEY WILL REPAINT IT. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH, I DISCOVERED THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE WITH HONDA VEHICLES. THEY MAKE GOOD CAR BUT CRAPPY PAINT. IN THE MEANTIME, THE PEELING IS SPREADING AND THE EXPOSED AREA IS STARTING TO RUST. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE WAY HONDA HAS HANDLED THIS, OR RATHER "NOT" HANDLED THIS! UPDATE: 1/19/19 IT'S BEEN ALMOST A YEAR SINCE I STARTED DEALING WITH THE PAINT PEELING OFF MY PILOT AND HONDA IS STILL GIVING ME THE RUNAROUND! NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE AND THE PEELING HAS GOTTEN WORSE AND IS NOW RUSTING. I WILL NEVER BUY ANTOHER HONDA AGAIN!!!

We owned a 2005, 2007, and now 2014 Honda Pilot. The main problems are the fuel economy and power numbers are tepid, the 5-speed gearbox is jerky, and acceleration took nearly 10 seconds. Plus the transmission cost a small fortune to repair. Please, take my word and buy aToyota Highlander (which we now own) or the Honda Odyssey.

Love it. Rides like a car yet big enough for my families needs and doesn’t look like a caravan. At least on the outside. Love the touring trim, comes with all the bells and whistles, most I haven’t figured out yet. My kids love the dvd player and thank heavens it came with working headphones so I can listen to my own stuff. Can’t say enough positive things about it. The only negative which is not a big deal is the gear shifter is not in the middle, its in the dashboard which is a bit hard to get used to.

The head gasket blew in my 2014 Pilot with 93k miles. Repair quote is $13k. All scheduled maintenance completed and Hinda refuses to share in cost of repairs. I guess there is a reason Honda is now so low on J.D. Power and Consumer Reports reliability rankings....no longer even in the top 10 of manufacturers. Honda has become a huge disappointment.

To start I was told that Honda has amazing a customer service, I found out real fast that they have extremely poor service! I have paint peeling under my sunroof and it looks so bad. I called the corporate office and that was a complete waste of my time. I took it to the Honda Dealership in our town and they said no warranty for paint! By the end of this week I will no longer be driving a Honda and never will again. Crazy thing is my older two are teenagers and we’re going to get a Honda CRV for them...not anymore! Worst experience with a car ever! My 2007 Dodge Ram looks better than my 2014 Pilot. After reading tons of reviews on this vehicle it is common and Honda does nothing about their crap paint jobs! No integrity in that company at all!

Bought this after salesman said this was 4WD (says so on vehicle) had no way of testing since it was bought in July. took to Outer Banks in NC and got stuck twice. Attempted lock in as manual says and still did not help. Transmission fluid overheated and had to sit and wait for it to cool down. Friend driving a Rav4 was able to drive in sand better than we could and his is not 4WD. Was able to dig out once and then had to be towed once. Even letting air out to less than 20lbs did not help with getting through sand Might be better in snow butnot looking forward to testing out.

I have spent many thousands of miles in this car and hated most of them. I had a perfectly good back until I came in contact with this car. Now I am on humira and many other medications even though I am only 18 years old. The sun-visors in this broke with 30,000 miles. It worse in snow than the CRV. The parking sensors do not work my mom has backed into many things with this car because of this fact. The stereo is terrible and has almost no bass. The seat heaters where broken when the car came from the factory. The GPS can't find our house. The stero and GPS is very hard to use even for an A+ certified tech. The backseat is tiny and won't fit an adult. The trunk is horribly undersized.

Bought a 2014 pilot and have been happy with it so far. Took it for a road trip (1K miles) and the ride has been wonderful. My kids enjoyed the space at the 2nd row seat. Controls are easy to understand. Only downside I would write is the squeaking noise on the front doors and looks like I am not the only one having this problem reading thru various blogs.

Excellent Mid-Sized SUV with Honda Reliability

This is a great SUV. We couldn't be happier with all aspects of this vehicle. I have only three issues, that if resolved would make this almost a perfect score. The quality of the plastic used on the interior needs improvement. It scratches very easily and just light use will leave scratches throughout. In order to use the spare tire, you have to almost empty the area behind the rear seats so that you may access the rear storage compartment and crank the spare down (it is stored underneath on the exterior). Finally, the vehicle is only rated to tow 2,000 lbs. This is due, in large part, to the unibody construction and front wheel drive. You can get a 4,000 lb capacity with the full-time 4WD.

Reliability is less than my expectation from HONDA

This is my first HONDA I bought it new back in Oct, 2013, I mostly use it for a long drive and I have put only 32,000 miles on it after 6 and a half years. The problem I have is both of the front wheels bearing are out and I just replaced them at 23,000 miles with my own expenses because the warranty is out. One of the front Axle is leaking and both of them were replaced at around 25,000 miles, also the Air Bag recall. I noticed that this SUV has some kind of vibration, not related to the tire mounting or balancing which is kind of annoying. My advice for you is to do more research before buying your next car or SUV. Do not rely on your short test drive or falling in love with how it looks.

I had a 2014 Honda Pilot touring and loved it. When it was totaled there was no other car on the marked I wanted. Hunted until I found another one. Now I have another with less miles. Great family car, I have 3 kids, three dogs and a husband. Nothing I can not do with this car.

I’ve purchased new cars and been more disappointed than ever, I’ve owned my Touring Pilot for 4 years now & has not once broken down or shown issues, I’ve taken it in had timing belt changed AS required at 160,000km as stated and it’s like a new car, scoots from Woodstock to Toronto no concerns extremely comfortable smooth ride Down side, navigation needs update

Honda used faulty paint and thinks you should fix

Dana Owen, 04/14/2021

We bought a 2014 Honda Pilot with 90,000 miles on it in November of 2020 after researching many reviews. In March of 2021 the part of paint on the front roof of the vehicle was off. We were baffled. We researched this issue and found out that Honda used faulty paint on their white 2014 models and it’s been coming off in droves. They recalled but decided that only for 7 years after the car is released. So that means by January 2021 the 2014 I just paid 20k for because they are such “great” cars needs a new 2,500 paint job-that’s literally what Honda quoted us....because Honda used cheap crappy paint.... and knew it. Then refused to fix it because apparently they believe car paint under 100k miles should only last 7 years. Good to know that’s what they believe. Also the mechanical issues this thing has are pathetic. The trunk doesn’t pop open or shut a third of the time so I have to do it manually, the lights inside don’t work right and the car alarm randomly goes off. I’m so thankful this happened because we were talking in January about selling this one at the end of the year and just buying a new one next year if we liked it! Now we know we will never buy a Honda of any kind again.

Horrible break rotors

Honda should've be ashamed of such a poor design on the rotor breaks. They warp every 5000 to 6000 miles. NEVER buy Honda if you can buy anything else. They treat you as a stupid at the dealership and they make a ignorant face when you mention the problem as if yours is the only one with this problem and it is probably because of you who drives it wrong way. Again, do not buy Honda if you can.

Honda won’t fix there paint issue because the issue is not a safety problem. Take a look and see what is going to happen to your honda pilot or honda odyssey after several years. Facebook - Honda paint defect action group.
