I bought this car with over a 100K on it and have had it for about a year. So far it has been fantastic! It has nice power and runs very well. A couple months ago I hit a big Ohio deer and I barely felt it. Me and my family were completely safe, which made me very happy I bought this SUV. Last winter I could not get my Odyssey up my long driveway in the snow, with this, it's a breeze. The leather is comfortable. The kids love the heated seats. I'm 6'4" and it's very roomy. Sound system is awesome. I average about 19.6mpg. On a long trip through Canada I actually had 25mpg highway. It's used, buy the extended warranty if you're worried about the tranny going and drive worry free!

We bought our Pilot in Feb. 2012. It had approximately 87,000 miles on it. I upgraded from a Honda Civic to get more space for kids, cargo, and to have a great roadtrip vehicle for the family. Our Pilot has been everything we needed and more. All we've done is regular maintenance, and we have had no problems. It drives like a dream on the highway and has TONS of space for carseats, kid stuff, and other cargo. We are adding a hitch for a cargo rack and the running boards next, and it'll be perfect. We are very pleased with our Pilot and will be keeping it as long as it runs!

Unfortunately, three days ago I was hit by a drunk diver which totaled this car, boo!!! It still runs however, just cannot kill this vehicle and we still love it! We are looking to buy another Honda but looking at the luxury Acura model this time around. I would highly recommend a Honda to anyone, you cannot go wrong and will be very happy with the reliability and performance! We are still extremely happy with this car... we have 252,000 miles on it now. ALL of the driving has been in extreme conditions and it still runs great! We know it won’t last forever but it still runs great and other than oil changes, it requires very little maintenance. We love our Honda Pilot... We live in Colorado along the I25 corridor and this car is subjected daily to a miserable commute 60 miles daily in all kinds of weather and it has performed beautifully! We have nearly 209,000 miles on it and have only had one issue with it, the power steering was giving us some issues at about the ten year mark... Honda worked through it, even called in the engineers that designed the car and figured out that it was a pinhole leak in the vacuum hose... Honda covered EVERYTHING and we didn't pay a dime... Wonderful support from the dealer and manufacturer! The car has been driven across country a half dozen times and is so comfortable to drive on the long haul... I hope to keep it for another ten years! Just get the oil changed religiously and do the maintenance and Hondas will last forever! My first Honda was a 1988 Civic with a manual transmission and I drove that for 250,000 miles...

I bought my 2004 Pilot EX-L in Dec 2008 with 52,900 miles. I'm now at 110,300 miles. I am a DIY mechanic and have done all the scheduled maintenance myself. The 17 city and 22 hwy fuel ratings are not accurate. Best highway was 21 and routinely get 18-19mpg in mixed driving at high altitude in Colorado and Wyoming. When I lived in Southern California, I routinely got 15-16mpg in mixed driving and a highway best of 19. So fuel quality and altitude definitely effect fuel economy. I've replaced motor mounts, spark plugs, shocks/struts, timing belt, and valve adjustments. Overall a great vehicle with no transmission problems.

My Honda pilot has never let me down it's good in the rain in the snow gets me were ever I have to go . It's very comfortable and wants to cruise control is set on the open road I have to do very little except for stay awake and steer . Honda has been very good at doing all the recalls and their service is excellent . I had all the maintenance work done on my 2004 Honda Pilot. Including the timing belt and water pump and tensioner all fluids changed or topped off. This is the best car I ever owned. I don’t want to ever sell it. Because the newer Honda Pilot are not as well built.

Ideal large family vehicle

The car has a smooth ride, and road noise is minimal on highway. We added a hitch and roof rack, and with 6 adults and loaded with cargo, the car handles quite nicely except that it is underpowered, especially if it's fully loaded. Acceleration and hill climbs are slower than I would like. This car has a lot of cargo space with room for car seats in 2nd and 3rd rows, though access to 3rd row can be a bit challenging for an average adult. 3rd row is best for kids or small adults as legroom is limited. We are happy with this car. Great family or roadtrip vehicle. It's held its value well, and we will be holding on to it for a long time.

This car was passed down to me after my mom had been driving it for 12 years and it is the best first car I could ever ask for. It is a tough vehicle and very spacious making it easy to transport between households. There are minor flaws that have occurred over the years, one of my biggest concerns is the metal on the door handles that have come off. Even with 275,000+ miles I have a feeling that this vehicle will still be kicking for a while.

Still great after 8 years and over 200k miles

My 2004 Pilot EXL is still great after 8 years and over 200,000 miles. I bought it in spring of '06 when it had 50k miles, so someone before me drove a lot, too. I've not had all the issues I've read about, but I don't abuse the vehicle. I get oil changes every 5-6k miles, but do spread out the scheduled maintenances and fluid changes a bit more due to quickly rolling up highway miles. My Pilot replaced a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 that had the gas-guzzling 5.2 liter V8. The main reason I replaced the JGC was due to terrible gas mileage (9-15) and slipping transmission. I've not had any transmission issues with my Pilot, but I don't abuse it, either!

I've driven two Fords, a couple of Chevys, a Buick, a Dodge pick-up, a Toyota, and a Subaru. The 2004 Honda Pilot is the best car I ever owned. When a drunk driver plowed into my parked 13-year-old Pilot and totaled it a couple of months ago, I went straight out and bought another; same year, make and model. The 2004 Pilot is the best car I ever owned.

This is clearly the best SUV that we ever owned. Over the last 16 years we have owned over 30 cars and this is probably the best one overall of all the vehicles. When it comes to SUVs no other beats it. We have had a Durango, Liberty, Passport (both Honda and Isuzu version and CRV (2x). This is the best mix of style, room and functionality that an SUV can have. The third row pulls out easily for when the in-laws come over or the seats fold flat for the runs to the dump. Our Durango spent more time in the shop than on the road so this has been pleasant to fill and go with the regularly scheduled oil change and maintenance. Handles like a dream, even in the rough New England winters.

We bought this car brand new, the first model of the Pilot in 2004. We've taken some great trips, drove kids to sports, school, and now we use it for driving grandchildren! It still runs like new and has always parked in our garage. We make sure we do the proper maintenance on it, and there's never been a major repair. It's a great family car for us. Now my husband wants me to buy a newer one.

240K+ miles and still going strong!

I bought this car new in October 2003 and it had 31 miles on it when I drove it off the lot. I now have over 240K miles on it and the only issues I have ever had with it are: driver's door handle had to be replaced after not being able to open the door from the inside, AC compressor went out once. This car has been subject to at least 3 Honda recalls, one being the transmission issue. I will continue to drive it until the wheels fall off. My 1st gen (1997) CRV, which I also bought brand new, is still on the road today with another owner as well. Bought my daughter a new 2009 Fit as a graduation gift. She treats it like her baby! I stand by Honda, trying to decide which I will buy next.

Heated Driver's Seat - FIRE HAZARD!

My 2004 Honda Pilot with 39,000 miles has problem with the driver's side seat heater. It gets dangerously hot to point of burning. If you to to the NHTSA incident database or to Edmunds discussion group , you will find several complaints about this same exact problem. All complaints reference a 2004 Pilot: seat gets EXTREMELY HOT on right side of driver seat. Some people have had FIRES OR SMOKE coming from seat. I contacted Honda Customer service and they refused to acknowledge any problem or to remedy the problem reported as a safety problem. Yes, it is out of warranty but a seat FIRE is a serious safety issue!

Reaching just 250,000 miles this week I have been dealing with an ignition issue. Don't try and save money when it comes to the ignition, go straight to the dealer. I went to multiple people and it was never ever fixed correctly and I ended up taking it to Honda after spending almost $600 to just spend another $700 to get it fixed the right way. Everything else is good with the exception of the power locks and I refuse to spend money to fix them. Everyone says it could cost me $1000 to get everything up and running. Finally we recently bought a 2007 jeep Grand Cherokee, at first I thought it was nice. But after driving it for a month and then driving the pilot again I never realized how much I loved the pilot. It just drives so smooth and has so much room. Old post... I have 220,000 miles on my 2004 Honda Pilot and there are no issues. Spent about $170 to repair the a.c. just before I hit 200,000 miles. About to change the timing belt again and most likely the motor mounts. Some normal wear and tear cosmetically. But I just go to the Junk yard to get replacement parts.

If you need a family or larger SUV look no further. 20MPG isn't bad for something this big, and when that drunk driver totaled his Mazda 3 into my rear bumper last Summer there was only minimal cosmetic damage — much to the amazement of the eye witnesses the scene. Now I feel very safe with respect to crazy drivers in traffic and accidents. There's lot's of room inside, very comfy as a road car, and drives great in the snow. It's been a very dependable unit as well, always starts and has never left me stranded. On the minus side, I've experienced brake fade a couple of times on long steep descents, so maybe aftermarket rotors and pads would be a worthy upgrade. The transmissions on these have a history of trouble and mine seems a bit noisy in first gear, but no real issues...yet. Over all a solid rig, you won't be unhappy with this one, especially at the prices they can be had for these days. 😄 Update, still going strong at 144,000. Only routine maintenance and new tires so far. Drives better than the day I bought it! 200,000 miles and drives great! Update, 205,000 miles Runs like a Swiss watch

I highly recommend this vehicle! I bought the Pilot new and have driven it now for a little over 7 years and 90k miles. Every time I get behind the wheel I catch myself thinking, "I love this car." The vehicle has been so reliable and trouble-free. I also can't get over the comfort of the seats and the great visibility while driving. My college daughter needs a car now and on one hand I think I should pass the Pilot along to her but on the other hand, how can I let it go when I love it so much?!

Researched and test drove the 2003, but waited for the 2004 in hope of Honda removing any bugs. At 19,000 miles the radiator had to be replaced due to a split seam. At 20,186 the ECT sensor was replaced. At 20,300 the thermostat was replaced. At 22,495 the fuel pump/filter assembly was replaced. At 23,500 the PCM was replaced. The the fuel injectors were replaced during same service visit. The vehicle is in the dealership (not the one purchased from) having the head gaskets replaced. This is the seventh trip to the same dealership to repair the check engine light and VTM- 4 light on. We have the technology to put a man on the moon and safely return him but I can't get my car fixed.

Honda Pilot: a Class Ride

This is a one-owner SUV, with 256,000 miles. It is our go-to vehicle for travel, because it is so comfortable and reliable. It has been impeccably maintained by the same mechanic since new. The timing belt, water pump, all belts, hoses, and fluids, have been replaced at 1000,000 mile intervals. This vehicle has only left us stranded once, in the past 15 years, and that was because we left an interior light on at the airport, which caused us to return to a dead battery! The engine, transmission and 4-wheel drive system have all been flawless, throughout the years. The heater, air-conditioning, and electronics all perform as new. The car has not been involved in a vehicular collision, although it has collided with deer on two separate occasions, resulting in minor front body damage, both which have been repaired. At my age, we don't need three vehicles, so I'm thinking of selling our 'Blue-eyed Susan', after another 7,500 vacation tour this summer. Is there a better and more reliable SUV? I don't think so!

We bought our Pilot brand new in 2/2004 as a "do it all" vehicle. We looked at the Highlander (too expensive & small) and the Forester XT (way fun to drive but alas, too small. We ended up buying the Piolt EX-L. We are impressed with the ride quality and the road manners. A couple of faults have dampened our enthusiasm. The main seal started leaking oil at 55,000 miles. The dealer took care of that under warranty. Driver's side seat- heater went on the blink and burned your tush. This is a known issue with the pilot and the dealer denied that it was a problem. Brake rotors warping & paint job is uneven. Honda could have done better! A tip for Honda, listen to your customers! Don't be arrogant

Purchased my 2004 Honda Pilot new and maintained regular maintenance during the years. Regular oil changes and factory recommendations. Most miles were highway driven but the car ran beautifully and had no major problems. Midwest driven so it did have some rusting around the wheel wells. When I first bought it I loved it. But then soon after I had the transmission go out and after research found a recall on the transmission. Honda has not been helpful at all. Now I have to go pay 4000+ to get my car fixed although it should be their money paying for it since it was recalled. They said they fixed it by putting in an oil jet kit but it is far from fixed! Very disappointed! Also the drivers side seat gets very hot to the point where I start smelling my clothes almost burning! So much for heated seats when you cannot use them.

When my husband died I decided to trade our Honda accord in for a fourwheel drive Honda Pilot. We had been so pleased with our other cars that I felt sure that the Pilot would probably be my last car, We had put so many trouble free miles on the earlier cars, and I had all the confidence in the world in Honda. This no longer holds true. I was totally amazed when I had to spend over $3000.00 to replace the transmission with a little over 80,000 miles on my car.The Honda dealer wanted over $4,000.00. Then I find this was a well know problem when I purchased it. I will never recommend Honda to anyone again!!

My end of my lease is nearing. I am unbelievably letting go of my '04 Pilot w/Nav. A tremendous performer on wet, ice, snow, and the occasional stretches of smooth pavement I manage to come across. Reliable to a fault. Predictable and reasonable gas mileage. A great performer on the long haul. More usable space than anything else in its class. Carries an overwhelming amount of cargo. Nothing ever broke. Not even the smallest thing. 'm replacing it with the '08 Pilot. A no brainer.

Bought new, still running great at over 90K. Comfortable and non-fatiguing--I've driven dozens of 1000+ mile trips in it, most in 1 shot. I love the storage space between the front seats--still haven't seen another SUV like it. Brakes started pulsing at 45K, machining helps only temporarily. Cannot get EPA gas mileage. I like at new SUVs, and just don't see anything I'd like better, so I'll just keep this one as long as it's reliable.

I can't believe the high ratings this vehicle has received. Does every publication assume because it is a Honda that the quality/design is great? 1). Weld Spash- Front Strut area 2). Loud Popping noises out of rear 3). Air Bag Recall 4). Transmission Recall- Design Problem 5). Rear Differential to be replaced- Currently on Back order can't receive? The paint is literally peeling off of my pilot. It all started when the vehicle was about 3 years old, I contacted Honda who told me it was due to using car washes instead of hand washing. Ha, it's never been in a car wash but still they would do nothing. Now I must pay for a paint job before winter because it is rusting. My Honda is the blue metallic and the paint is horrible! Great car with plenty of seats! I went from a mini van seating 8 to this. Smaller then the van but great features and more reliable! I have compared it to several other vehicles and nothing compares for the space and features unless you go to a full size suv and that is too much gas. Would have liked to get the DVD without the leather because it is cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Hard on the little kids. I would buy another one today if I had to!

Solid SUV

I have owned this SUV for six and a half years. The car is very reliable. Besides the normal maintenance (oil, brakes, batter), the car has needed new rear shocks ($450 at 66K miles) and two new engine mounts ($650 at 68K miles). The shocks were blown because we overloaded the car on a long trip, but the engine mounts are a common problem for Odysseys and Pilots. We love the car because it is powerful and does the job.

I went to the dealer and after viewing new Pilots, and knowing how great the one I already own is, I decided to wait 2-3 more years to trade it in on a new one. My Pilot has been great to own, I have not had any problems except to replace the brakes and tires. It always starts, and runs great. I would buy another exactly if I did not want to upgrade to leather and change colors!

I bought my Pilot in 04 and it has been mechanically reliable and comfortable with the exception of the AC. After 45k the compressor went out and I was quoted 1500 dollars for the repair. I also had another Honda with the same problem. The dealership was willing to give me a small break on the repair, no doubt because they are fully aware of the problem. I have 200k on my Camry and the air works great. Honda, please upgrade your cheap ACs.

When you hand your children a key to a car you are giving them control of their life. Truly and the life of others. My daughter had a head on crash into a stopped vehicle going ~38 MPH. My CAR TOOK THE ENTIRE HIT. She did not even get hit with an airbag as it did not need to deploy!!!! Wish I could afford Hondas for all my children and all my grandchildren! The car took 5 weeks to get back but it is just like new!. The Safety comments are real. My daughter would have been seriously injured had she been in her old car.

It is refreshing to get back to owning Hondas...just now recovering financially from owning 1996 Dodge Caravan, and 2000 Volkswagens. Although our Odyssey was nice and convenient, we needed a super durable vehicle for our bad roads-the Pilot has been just that! (Knocking on wood) After 72,000 miles on Texas Hill Country roads (and "off" roads), our Pilot has batted 1000 on reliability and durability. Good luck on finding one lightly used...this one is a keeper!

Love the pilot, strange noise from under

Very happy with the pilot, have owned it for 6 months, we have had a strange noise coming from under the vehicle almost sounds like the cooling fans just take off at a very high speed and stop. And the suspension has a issue with hopping sometimes. Have brought back to the dealership 3 times and the truck won't make the noise nor will it act up at all. Thinking about asking for them to take the truck back if they can not find the problem. We really like this vehicle, its a good solid SUV.

I have owned a 4-Runner, Bronco, Suburban, and driven just about every SUV out there and this is the best all around SUV yet. Reliable, gets decent mileage for an SUV and I was shocked at how well it handles and a third row to boot! Very solid. In the snow I have not ben able to get it to lose traction...great AWD system. I will drive this one for years to come and it has 73,000 mi. on it already..not even broken in yet!

My wife wanted a Blazer. They were advertising $4000 rebates. However after comparing the cost to operate. It was clear the Blazer is a LOSER! This car is great. The 3rd seat is hard to get in. Definitely for kids. There is no road noise in this car. Took a few days for dealer to locate a LX. We looked for a car about 3 months. This is it. No rebates, but they gave me a great deal on my Accord.

documented torque converter problems...DON"T BUY

I purchased a used 04 Pilot with 100K from a used car lot for 9,000. The car drove great during the test drive. On the way home I felt a "rumble strip" like noise under the car when exiting the highway at about 40 mph. I found out that the torque converter is a common problem and leads to transmission failure on the 03 to 05 Pilots. Acura did recall on this same problem. Why not Honda? Are they waiting for someone to die? My car was bought "as is" so I am S*** out of luck. I am still a Honda fan as I bought an 08 CRV for my wife which performs flawlessly, as well as two ATV's which I beat the snot out of. However, I am ready for a class action suit on this one!

My husband and I have had several Hondas - some new, some used. In 2003, we decided to buy a new Pilot. All was fine until last year when the air conditioner went out - very costly. Today we found out there is a problem with a rod and the whole engine will have to be torn apart - extremely costly. I am not at all happy with this vehicle that only has 70,000 miles on it and has had all service and oil changes done. My husband always takes great care of our cars. I will re-think another new Honda purchase in the future.

I really like the overall practicality of this vehicle. It's roomy and not bad if you have to carry passengers in the 3rd row. For short trips at least. The only beef I have is the quality of the interior materials in certain places. Things like the air vents, climate control knobs are made from some of the flimsiest plastic I've ever seen in a car. I expect more from Honda.

I bought this car for my wife who was returning to work. I wanted something that was reliable, got decent gas mileage, was able to get around in the snow, and could tow a boat. The Pilot has stood up to all of these demands and then some. It is fun to drive, has great acceleration, gets around great in all weather and has been reliable (except when we leave the dome lights on and the battery goes dead). We have used it to tow a boat that weighs about 4500 (Regal 2100 LSR). We started camping/boating and had to add a Suburban due to load and room limits. Now my son drives the Pilot, and we feel comfortable with the safety aspects of the vehicle as well. I would buy a Pilot again.

As a first-time SUV buyer, I did alot of research to find the right one. From everything I read, the Honda Pilot was at the top of list, and it remained there after test driving many others. The 2004's were just arriving on the lots when I made my decision, but they were in short supply. It took awhile for mine to finally come in, but it was definitely worth the wait. If you're hesitant on which SUV to purchase, you can't go wrong with the Pilot - you won't be disappointed.

Just Purchased My Honda Pilot and man it is nice. It Drives like a car and has the room of a minivan. The third row seating is great and the DVD entertainment system is great for the kids. This car is a great buy. Deal was OK, not much off sticker but did get some. Glad I waited for the 2004 which includes Heated seats and mirrors.

I bought this car new. It has NEVER had a problem ( besides battery and brakes) I have 80,000 miles. I was hit by a Taurus, I got out of the Honda and could not see a dent, finally I saw it, only $900 to repair (Taurus totalled) These are great cars, mileage could be better, wind noise bad, great product.

There is only one word that describes this car... bulletproof! I'm 18 and thus I have done things to it that I regret, yet barely phases it! It is a ballerina in the snow, and very comfortable for a long drive (I put 50 miles on it a couple days ago) and avoided an accident with my friend (AMAZING brakes). Excellent power too, great soundtrack when you step on it, and not bad mileage when driven correctly! Had a friend say she liked this car better than my friend's 6 month old Grand Cherokee. Very roomy in the back, routinely transports 4 friends with no problems. Not another car among us that can do it so well (save for my moms minivan). Some of my friends call it "The Beast". It sure is!
