Let me be the first for one time
Am I really the first? I finally got my 2004 Pilot a few days ago and it has been great. Honestly I haven't driven a lot so I can't really comment on the gas/mileage part. I haven't experienced any annoying noises that were reported by some other users, although I doubt they had made any changes in the new model (mostly luck I guess). It was well designed, very comfortable and great handling.

Best vehicle I ever bought
Bought our Pilot in 2004 new from the showroom to accommodate our growing family. Now its l2023 and still going strong. 253,000 plus miles and just completed a 11 hour trip each way to manzanita Oregon. Original engine, & tranny. Only work done is periodic maintenance, alternator, and door lock actuators, and turning rotors. Words of advice- change oil regularly and only use Honda spec tranny fluild. Hope to get 500k on this pilot.

This Thing Rocks
I have only had this 2004 Pilot for 4 days. All I have to say is WOW. It drives so nicely and handles really well. I have had an explorer, outback, saturns, etc, and this SUV is by far the best I have had. I went with the DVD system instead of the navigation. I heard to many bad things about the Honda Nav system they put in the pilot. It is njot the same as the Accord nav system. the DVD sounds awesome and my son loves it. GO BYE THIS VEHICLE!!!
Love This Car/Truck
We looked at many AWD vehicles including Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Pathfinder and Saturn Vue. We test drove most and the Pilot felt great. We love the extra seating, but mostly the extra room with the rear seats down. Since we come from a van we feel we've given up nothing in cargo space. Love the Honda, had an Accord before and loved that too.
Like my Pilot very much
After a lot of research on similar SUV's (Rav, CRV, Cherokee, Pathfinder, Xterra) I drove the Pilot and immediately saw the difference. Quality interior and nice materials. Good takeoff and passing power, the ride is quiet and when you're not "on it" the 5-speed tranny will keep you cruising at around 2k RPM which helps gas mileage. When driven conservatively i average 20mpg on back road driving. ABS brakes work well, though don't always read imput well and will pull too hard sometimes. AWD feels seamless and it handles snow perfectly. Minimal quality issues, like the plastic housing inside my taillight broke and you cant take it apart to fix where it "pops" back together. Great car overall though.
A reliable and dependable SUV
If you do regular maintenance on the car it will keep running without any problems. Two important items that are original on my SUV: engine, transmission. Still chucking at 200K miles.

Hard To Beat A Honda
I have had good luck with Hondas in the past and this Pilot did not disappoint. It is a very comfortable car to drive. I drive it in the mountains often and it handles the curves and snow very well. I don't find the road noise to be a problem - it is quieter than my CRV. The gas mileage isn't great - about 18 around town - but I knew that when I purchased it. Not a deal breaker for me. I find the cargo space to be quite adequate for my needs; and the heated seats are a definite plus. How about adding a heated steering wheel?
2004 Pilot Great Car
The Pilot for 2004 is an improved version of the 2003 model. The leather seats and outside mirrors are now heated. It is powerful, accelerates and brakes well, and steers easily. The new smart air bags are standard, and it gets a very good safety rating. The navigation system is easy to use. Holds up to 100 personal addresses - use them for destinations; for instance to easily return home after a cross- country trip. The voice prompts are nicely tied into your location and give count downs to a turn. Much better than the portable navigators. My 2004 was discounted $1700 off MSRP!
I LOVE my Pilot
Extremely comfortable ride, not like truck based SUVs. Great Handling, I live way out in the country off a dirt rode prone to flooding and erosion and it handles great and feels great. Honda's usual very thoughtful interior design. Great room inside, but smaller than usual (for SUVS) exterior dimensions, which makes parking easy to handle.
Buy one and you won't regret it.
I've had my Honda Pilot EX with leather and the navigation system almost a year now and I can't say enough good things about it. It handles like a car in town and climbs like a cat off road. When I bought my Pilot I actually had to start up my old vehicle twice and get ready to pull out of the dealership before they ran out after me. With $1,800 worth of additional accessories over the sticker value of the car I ended up paying $500 over sticker for it which I thought was an excellent deal since I was reading of everyone paying $1,500 to $2,500 over sticker at the time. Go out and buy one and you won't regret it.
Honda rocks
We love this SUV so much, it moves very fast, just like rocket, fun to drive. The 4x4 is very fantastic. I enjoy driving in turbulent off road terrain. It is a wonderful SUV. Will recommend it for every one.
Best for our needs
After researching several types of SUVs with 3rd row seating, we narrowed our list down to the Pilot. We found a great deal on one at a local used car lot and it was in excellent shape. This is truly the vehicle our family needed and its features adequately meet our criteria.
Built for Colorado
Can you say altitude, sun, rain, snow and more sun! This basically describes one spring day in CO. The Pilot masterfully handles all of these elements and delivers a consistent high quality performance. We bought our first Pilot in 2004 - an LX. We put Michelin LX M/S tires on and enjoyed the ride of our lives. During back road driving in the Christmas blizzard of 2009 in Texas, the Pilot delivered everything our family needed. We locked in the four-wheel drive and toured some snowy farm roads on the way to the hotel- picking up a family of four stuck in their two-wheel drive. We bought a 2006 EXL -more Michelin tires and the freak blizzard in Denver last Tuesday was cake. Love this SUV!
Should have bought one sooner.
Previously owned two Hondas (Civic and Accord). Had the Accord for 14.5 years with 165,000 miles. Took a break for a few years from Honda but recently purchased a certified used 2004 Honda Pilot. Love it! Glad to be back in the Honda family!

Honda Navigation system is over the top!
When Hi technology meets reliability, only Honda seems to know how to do the trick. Navigation system is superb plus there's tons of standard features for a reasonable price, Leather interior very well appointed for a honda badged car. Plus great room in first two rows. Exterior can use a little front grille restyling .Its biggest flaw is no sunroof (what were you thinking?). Overall, this is a very versatile vehicle considering its size, that drives like a sport sedan, great suspension, definetly not a van like ride like somebody suggested.more than the average SUV and a lot of car for you buck.
The best "Midsize SUV"
I did alot of reviewing before I bought my Pilot. I knew that it was the right choice. I put Midsize in " only because its far from that. Lots of space. My family and I had a picnic this past week. We fit 8 adults with no problem. Try doing that in any other Midsize SUV. With gas prices already high. The Pilot will give you the best gas economy you can find. Durablity and reliability, its a Honda.
Amazing!
I have owned my Pilot for 8 months now and I love it. It's clean, comfortable, resourceful, and well built. I have not had any problems whatsoever. It is the smoothest drive and has lots of room, more than a Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's great for traveling, camping, fishing, family and more. Everything is durable and well put together, even the engine looks clean and easy to work on if necessary. I would recommend this vehicle to everyone. I haven't been so satisfied with my car like this ever. Before I owned 2 VW Jettas and had nothing but problems and I have never been happier with my Pilot.
Awesome
After a bad accident, i feel very safe in this car!
The Underdog
I have only started driving recently, this car is my parent's car, however it is soon to become mine, even at 6 years of age this car cannot stop impressing my friends when it comes out on Friday nights. It is obviously not as tight as it used to be, but it is bulletproof, I have done some things to it that I regret, however it shrugged it off and kept going like it was no biggie. I love how simple it is compared to all my friends' cars, yet it gets the job done, despite playing with 2008 and 2009 model BMWs and Lexuses. It rocks and I will never give it up until the thing is truly done, I don't even want a newer car I love this one so much!
Great SUV
We travel everywhere in the pilot with no worries. Great on gas and excellent on reliability. Very glad we bought this vehicle.
First SUV, probably the last!
I purchased my 2004 Honda Pilot EXL w/DVD and absolutely love it. Fuel economy is great for a vehicle this size, V6 is strong, and handling is amazing. Turning radius exceptional, and brakes very firm. Interior has simply everything you want for a family vehicle including safety, entertainment, and comfort. A week after I bought the Pilot, I had to dash out of my city to flee from an impending Isabell with my family, pets, and luggage. After 330 miles of driving on congested, windy, and wet roads; I would drive nothing else. Overall, the 2004 Pilot EXL epitomizes the saying, "it ain't braggin if you can do it."
MK HONDA
A very competent auto. The front and rear seating positions "feel" large and spacious. Very comfortable for an SUV, smooth and quite at highways speeds, but still, not a car. Average gas usage overall is 14-17 range. Never more that 19 on a long trip. Next time, I'll be looking for better gas mileage. No daytime running lights- except manually on. Overall- very satisfied.9+
Can't go wrong w/the Pilot
Bought this new, now 5 years and 90K+ miles later still love this Pilot! Very reliable, great mileage (20+ in daily commuting) when lead shoe isn't worn, only maintenance & tires to date. It's not 'sexy' but it's not supposed to be either. Regularly haul 3-8 total (adults + teens) with no problem. Highly recommend any Pilot.
HONDA PILOT
I had a Ford Explorer Limited before I got he Pilot. I love Honda anyway and I just love the Pilot! It drives like a sport's car! I actually got four friends, who were looking at other SUVs to but the Pilot and they all LOVE it!
Four years and going strong!
I purchased this 2004 Pilot EXL-RES new in October 2004. It now has 70K miles and still runs and looks great. I never keep a vehicle for more than 2 years, but this one is a keeper! I have had no problems with it and it runs as good today as it did when I bought it. I keep it well maintained and clean, and in return it just runs and runs. I am probably going to trade my other car, a Suburban, in for the 2009 Pilot. I would highly recommend this vehicle - I have owned many, many Hondas and this one has been the best.
Not Bad
I bought this vehicle used from auction, it is a basic EX, and impressed with the room inside, I dont like the shifter, doors should lock automaticly when gear in drive and should unlock when parked. I liked the third seat, it is somewhat comfy and folds nicely. Typical honda built with lots of plastic (pampered myself with german cars forever) but functional. I would like the ride to be more connected to the road and have a middle dash shifter. Couldn't try for MPG yet but it seem to guzzle.
Just What I Wanted
I often use this to transport heavy loads. My old station wagon used to groan, but this SUV takes twice as much easily. The seats fold away quickly. There are numerous 12V outlets and many cupholders when I transport the Little Leaguers. It even seats eight. Only drawback is road noise on the highway.
WHAT HAPPANED TO HONDA QUALITY.
OVER ALL HONDA PILOT IS AN AVERAGE SUV.HONDA COULD OF DONE A MUCH BETTER JOB BULIDING THIS SUV.FOR EXAMPLE,THEY COULD OF MADE THE INTERIOR MORE PLUSH,INSTEAD OF USING SO MUCH PLASTIC, THERE ARE NO SUN ROOF,CHEAP STEREO,NO OPTION ON 4X4 OR 2X4,SHIFTING GEAR GETS STUCK,DOOR HANDLES DO NOT MATCH THE COLOR OF THE VEHICLE.
Pilot Rocks!
Great SUV, you feel very safe while driving. You get the same car as the Acura for $8,000 less, while using regular fuel. Acura needs Premium! Mileage is good for a car this size. Drives like a dream!!!
plastic honda
you never know about a vehicle until you wash it. the plastic in a tide bottle seems of a better quailty than the product on the front of our honda.before you buy look under the front the plastic under the engine doesn't completly extend all the way across leaving two small holes on either side. honda wouldn't admit it seemed to be a error. sloppy for a honda. they have learned how to make less look like more.
Inconsistent manufacturing quality
After looking at other peoples' reviews it appears that Honda's quality control is on this vehicle is poor. Overall the Pilot has nice features and is a practical SUV. But while others have raved about the power and the mileage, my Pilot has not excelled on either. When it was brand new it had good power and got about 19 mpg (mixed city/hwy) but at about 25,000 miles it started having problems with both. Mileage is now 15- 16mpg and power is poor. It sputters and loses speed at times on a level hwy. I have taken it to the dealer numerous times, and the Honda district service rep has looked at it. According to them everything is "normal". I have owned many Hondas, but this may be my last.
Good car but not a good start......
Bought my Pilot EX-L last Saturday. I like everything about this car and I drove off the lot with my family on Saturday night. While we are driving back home, I noticed that I could not roll down the front and back passenger side windows from the driver side control buttons. In addiion, door lock and unlock buttom from driver side would not work. And last but the least, interior lights would not go off. It has been only two days and I am taking my new Pilot back to the dealer for some minor repair. It's a good car but I would recommend you to check little things like buttons windows and door locks, etc.
Very reliable
This is a great vehicle! I bought this car as a used car certified with 30,000 miles and it has been very reliable! I have driven long distances on numerous occasions and haven't had one problem in the 3 years that I have owned it.
Not Impressed with my 1st Honda
There is nothing wrong with a Honda, some people are just not meant to drive one. The style I find very boring. More importantly, the stereo speakers are hard to listen to. The steering wheel controls are nice. It would be nicer if you could go forwards and backwards; but you can only go forward with your selections from the steering wheel. So if you like a song on your CD you have to advance through the others to get back to the last song. The other option is to take yours eyes off the road and lean way over to the radio and use the search button. As for fuel mileage, it is about 14-mpg city by my calculations. If you like Honda, you like the Pilot, otherwise keep looking.
bad year for pilots
If you have a chance to buy another make of small SUV you will be money ahead to go with that make. We have had nothing but trouble with this vehicle from the doors locking while charging the A/C, to when the battery is going bad the oil light comes on and the oil level and pressure is fine, to the ignition not accepting the key that I have been using for the last 3 years, to the transmission making a rumbling noise if the oil is not changed every 10,000 miles (the manual recommends every 30,000 miles). Not to mention the huge problem with mice getting into the interior of this vehicle. And these are just the major problems. And we have only owned it for 3.5 years.
DO NOT BUY!
Do not buy one of these unless you want to spend A LOT of time at the dealerships service waiting room. Brakes sqeak, overheats, air will not work when its hotter than 80 degrees, seats uncomfortable, cd player eats cd's. Nothing to reccomend
Honda Pilot Review
First time Honda buyer, pleased with vehicle. It meets all expectations except for outside temp gauge which seems to be 10 degrees off and not pleased with passenger seat not enough adjustments to make it more comfortable. Pleased with regular gas usage. Great for economy in an SUV. Lastly dealership claims not enough knowledge provided to them about this new vehicle.
Great SUV - Wife is happy
Hard to find a good deal.
Mouse Trap
Great ride, pleanty of room, and comfortable. Quiet cabin for the first year, there after, cabin noise seemed to increase, especially on highways. Gas mileage is not nearly what was stated...but the fact that you do not have to change the oil as frequently is a plus. I all it "the mouse trap" because we have cought six mice in the cabin so far. The dealer claims that it happens to all cars...all models, but this is a first for me. They think that the mice are getting through the freshair duct, and other than keeping it on recirculate, there is nothing that could be done.
Just got my 2004 with leather
So far, this is the best vehicle I have ever owned. It handles like a dream and gets respectable fuel mileage for an SUV. The sound system in the EX model is fantastic with the sub woofer. The front seats are extremely comfortable. The 3.5L engine combined with the 5 speed transmission gives you all the power you need in both city and highway traffic. It's so smooth, I don't usually even notice when it shifts. I got the midnight blue pearl color, and it is the prettiest blue I have ever seen on any car. The metal flake really sparkles in the sun.

cmments
-relatively hi quality built. -quiet & comfy ride.absorbs bumps big or small -very efficient interior design -very smooth tranny -top rate audio system(ex-l)conveniently located controls. -a bit noisy on coarse road.heated seats a little too slow to warm up compare to others.no dampening on glove compartment. -leather seats get worn too soon.
Family + fun + cool style
We've researched several similar styles (highlander, explorer, etc)but we always ended up back at the Honda dealer. Honda has always been the best. We've owned 3 hondas over the past 15 years, all were reliable and had an excellent resale value when it was time for us to "upgrade" -The Pilot fit our every need! Comfort, style. excellent entertainment system for the kids. The Pilot is an awesome alternative to a boring minivan! We love it! Absolutely no complaints so far.
best suv on road
test drove most suvs in its class and none had the great visibility and mobility of the pilot. bought a 2004 last month. blind spots not a problem. didnt think i would use the heated seats or mirrors as much as i have. mirrors clear off in under a minute. great vehicle. love the pilot.
Awesome SUV
Extremely happy with our new 2004 Honda Pilot EX w/ Nav System. I recently drove to Napa in our Pilot and the ride was very enjoyable. I loved the 240 V6 horse power, the convenient volume adjustment buttons on the steering wheel, the improved Nav system (proved especially helpful when taking some back roads) and the heated seats. It did take me a while to get used to driving the SUV as it does feel like you are driving a truck at times. But you get over that very quickly. With the third row back seats down the extra cargo space was really helpful. Pricing was also very reasonable at $32,500 (which included destination fee and trunk mat).
Space to Spare
Our Pilot was delivered with a deffective engine and after disputing our request for a replacement vehicle, Honda and the dealer provided us with an entirley new sample some 5 weeks later. Despite this poor start, we are impressed and extremely satisfied with the Pilot. With a family of six, the seating for 8 was a major plus on purchase. What impresses most after 11,000 miles is the comfort and spacious feel together with the responsive drive experience. Only con is serious off road use, don't plan to go there. Awaiting still an assessment of winter performance in the Sierras.
The Ideal SUV - Finally!
After searching for the ideal SUV - one that provided the combination of value, comfort, handling, and a smart interior layout - we have found the perfect vehicle. The Pilot was clearly the best value for the features, and the drive is clearly superior to any other mid- size SUV. This is the last SUV we test drove, and we didn't leave the dealership until we bought it. The Pilot provides a secure, tight feel when driving - it felt like we were riding in a luxury car, yet we have the space we need and the 4-wheel drive capabilities as an added benefit. We've been long-time Honda owners, so we took great comfort in buying our first SUV under the Honda brand.
very, very, very happy
my 2003 Honda Pilot handles like a dream. It hugs the road on turns and bumpy roadways. Everyone that sits in my Pilot always comments on how comfortable it is and and nice it looks. Inside in spacious even for 6 above size adults. The exterior design to me is fantastic. I was rear ended by a dodge astro van and the front of his van, engine, radiator and trannie were destroyed. the only damage to my vehicle was the rear hatch door was slightly dented, my tail pipe was pushed all the way in and the tail lights broke and a slight bend in the rear quarter panels. All passengers in my vehicle were suprised also. it's a vehicle I'm proud of to drive.
