Pretty Good Minivan

2019 Honda Odyssey Touring 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 10A)

The Odyssey Touring and Elite's 10 speed transmission is nicely matched to the engine, giving this van very good acceleration, better than all other minivans and the vast majority of the SUV's. The interior is quite nice, the entertainment system sounds very good, Android phone connectivity works well, both Google Maps & Waze from my phone displayed on the screen. Noise level is pretty low for a minivan, handling is acceptable, braking performance and feel are very good for a minivan. It has lots of outlets, 110VAC, 12V and USB chargers. The few negative points are the accelerator has a huge dead spot at the beginning of travel, takes a while to get use to. The front passenger seat was a little high above the floor for my wife (5' 3") making her thighs a bit tire on long trips, they're perfectly comfortable for me (5' 10"), the driver seat is adjustable, so no problems for either of us. And the seat back on the 2nd row doesn't fold down flat against the seat, somewhat compromising its ability to haul stuff, the 2nd row seats are also pretty heavy, making it difficult to remove if you wanted to haul larger items. The fit is also not as good as I've come to expect from Honda, the doors and hood all have somewhat uneven gaps, some less visible interior panels also didn't fit well. Lots of glare on the entertainment / navigation display, I may make my own leather over-hang shade to deal with this shortcoming. The cruse control worked reasonable well, but a little too aggressive at slowing down if another vehicle merged in front or us. The lane keeping assistant is not very effective. Blind spot detection worked fine. Also with the strong engine coupled with the 10 speed transmission, one could smoke the front tire all day. Could really use a limited slip differential to distribute the power between both front tires better, especially from a stand still on a Right turn.

We purchased the Elite trim. We have had the car for 10 months now and the entire audio/video system shut off. Apparently Honda has had multiple complaints about this. I would stay away until they can figure this out. I’m thinking if you get the base trim it should be fine but there is too much technology in the Elite and everything stopped. Rear view camera is not working also, no Bluetooth, no Apple car play, rear entertainment shut down (my kids are pissed as am I). I’m scheduled for service tomorrow morning. I will provide an update.

Transmission problems since under 5k.

We have had the car back to the dealership three times and getting ready to go again due to the transmission not shifting properly and seems to be getting worse. The dealer says they find nothing wrong each time and have been no help at all since it’s a warranty thing. No loaner car is available and they will only give us a weekday appointment (dealer is fifteen miles from us and both of us work over forty miles from them) which makes it even tougher with having to shuffle kids around and schedules also. I worked on Honda’s for fifteen years and have since moved to another job and never had an issue like this with any car I worked on. Customers who had issues were given a complimentary loaner and then a factory service rep was brought in to go over the diagnosis with the technician. Accelerating from a stop it shifts well and then gets up to about fourth or so and then bangs. If accelerating and then Letting off it seems to hold back from shifting and then bangs up a gear just to shift. We have had many friends ride with us and ask if it’s always done that, we just say yes. We are trying to get it looked at.

I've read the reviews, including Edmunds. Sounds like a few folks got lemons, others, poor dealerships. First, my response to Edmunds review. We purchased the Elite. The seats are very comfortable, especially the ventilation feature for here in Florida. But The road noise is terrible. It sounds so loud that it's hard to carry on a conversation, or listen to the superb sound system. With only 1100 miles, I fault the tires, Bridgestone Turanza. The noise was terrible initially. I recalled that some dealers overinflated tires to prevent flat spots. I checked; my tires were 46 PSI.! Despite the checklist showing that was cleared. Lowering the pressure to 33 PSI reduced the noise considerably but a significant amount remains. One ding. The navigation is not useful. Street names are not shown, nor is current traffic related to the location of the vehicle. 2 dings. The automatic engine shut off is annoying and has to be disabled each ride. A few reviews mention the rear seat is difficult to remove. I agree it is well made (heavy) but this is my second Odyssey and there's a short learning curve. The interior is enormous. With one rear seat removed our Great Pyrenees easily gets in and out. A few notes: Headlights are excellent. Side vehicle alerts are very noticeable. Handling is far superior to our 2010 Odyssey, and braking is greatly improved. I recommend driving the vehicle after a purchase and ignoring the tech gadgets. Familiarize yourself with basic operation then play with the other stuff cause they can be as distracting as texting. I'll update the review as miles accumulate.

Frustrated

I have been a Honda owner for 9 years now. I still own my 2010 Honda CRV and we just traded my husbands truck for the 2019 Odyssey EX-L for our family of four. We had the van less than 48 hours and the radio stopped working. No audio sound played whatsoever. The rear camera also no longer worked. I assumed it was just our ignorance and went to google and YouTube to find the fix the problem and discovered a slew of complaints and a class action lawsuit against 2018-2019 Honda Odysseys and Pilots. Then, I left something in my car after dark over the weekend and went out to get it and the display screen was on and wouldn't shut off. When we contacted the GA dealership about returning the car we were told they had not heard of this issue and that we could not return the van due to a non “cooling off” period bc the sale was final. After another 24 hours went by I woke up and our battery was dead due to the display screen not shutting off. I have since found additional forums and articles stating the issue is connecting an iPhone 8 and up to the Apple Car Play will create these issues. It is unsure at this point if this issue with Honda/Apple is resolved. We are going for a software update today and will see what happens. Otherwise if this is a reoccurring issue I guess we will have to try to return the vehicle based off of the Georgia Lemon Law.

Great vehicle with a few minor issues

This is my second Honda Odyssey EXL purchased in 15 months. My 2018 was totaled due to someone running a stop sign. So, I bought a 2019 a couple weeks ago. The vehicle has a superior ride and great gas mileage. However, both vehicles vibrate(d) at around 68-72 mph. The dealer claimed that they couldn't feel it with my 2018. I've learned to get used to it, but when the speed limit is 70, I either have to go 67 or 73 mph to mitigate it. I have fourother minor complaints. First, there is no change storage. So I had to purchase a change purse to hold my change. Second, there is no compass. This is quite an irritant when the GPS says go southeast, etc., on a particular road from the start of a trip. Third, the temperature display is a tiny readout on the bottom of the odometer screen. My wife can't see it from the passenger seat and has to ask me every time she wants to know it. All Honda needs to do is provide both a compass and temperature readout on the huge computer screen where you can view many other apps. Fourth, the middle seats do not table or stay locked in their most forward position. Otherwise, it is a fantastic vehicle with great comfort and good gas mileage. My 2018 averaged 31.4 mph in the econ mode on highway trips. I don't know what the 2019 will get, but I have similar expectations.

Electrical Issues with 800 miles

We have had to take our brand new Odyssey into the dealership for repairs 4 times now since October 2018. The dealership and Honda Manufacturing have been working together to resolve the issue but can't seem to find the solution. We are starting to discuss the lemon law and how we can get out of the car. It started at only 800 miles on the car with the radio along with the instrument panel cutting in/out along with a static and popping noise coming from the dashboard. They have replaced several items and performed software updates which seems to resolve the issue temporarily. It works for a week or so and then we are completely inconvenienced of having to schedule a time to drop off the car, remove and transfer car seats to the loaner vehicle, and take time out of our schedule. We went with a brand new vehicle to make sure we had a reliable van for our family. I have always thought of Honda as reliable but not anymore.

Much improved switching from a Sienna

We recently purchased a 2019 Odyssey after owning a 2015 Toyota Sienna XLE since new. We honestly thought we would keep the Toyota a few years longer but the most recent crash test rating along with rear crash test video shows the Sienna shows up major flaws in the safety department due to being built on a platform that is coming up 10 years old. Since our van is the primary transporter for school and family outing, we decided to move up the purchase timeline. The overall purchasing process was a breeze with us getting a pretty solid deal. The driving dynamic is very smooth and the ride is extremely quiet compared to the Sienna. I tested all 7 seats prior to purchase (I am 6'3") and was they are comfortable and offers better support than the Sienna. Overall, the Odyssey offers major upgrades compared to even the current Sienna model and if safety is a priority, Sienna is automatically disqualified due to poor scoring by IIHS. 2021 update: van still going strong! Still love the power, handling and everything it has to offer. We were rear ended by a distracted driver last yr at 45mph and the impact never intruded into the main cabin where our kids were. Everyone walked away and they fixed it back to OEM spec. This van will be with us for awhile since nothing on the market compares.

Wonderful Minivan

As of July 6, I will have owned my 2019 Honda Odyssey Elite for one year. To date, I have had one problem. The battery needed to be replaced. The dealership took the time to fully diagnosis the problem to make sure it wasn’t more than just the battery. In addition, there have been two recalls which the dealership handled. That’s it. I have no complaints. It has a very quiet, comfortable ride. The lack of power rear folding seat is noted as a “Con”. Having previously owned a 2006 Toyota Sienna Limited with a power folding third row seats, I can tell you I don’t miss it at all. The power folding seats in the Sienna were slow and after a few years quit working, which of course happened after the warranty had expired. The third row seats in the Honda are extremely easy to stow as well as put upright, either being done using only one hand. The second row seats are kind of a “love it or hate it” experience. It really boils down to what you are looking for. If it’s removal, these seats are heavy and difficult to remove. Best go with Chrysler and “Stow ’n Go” which are much thinner, less comfortable, and fold into the floor. If you are looking for comfort and the flexibility of being able to slide the seats sideways, which makes ingress and egress to and from the third row much easier, the Honda is your choice. I am also impressed with the MPG. On long trips at freeway speeds (70-75 mph), I get around 26-29 MPG. Around town, it’s 17-19 MPG. Best of all, my grandchildren love it.

2019 Honda Odyssey = Persistent Problems

We purchased our 2019 Honda Odyssey in Nov 2018 and while traveling over the holidays was involved in "body damage only" accident (hit a deer). The repair company fixed the body. Case closed. A couple weeks later we noticed a whirling noise coming from the engine at idle. We submitted to AutoNation Honda of Lewisville. They replaced drive belt and tensioner and returned vehicle around 2 weeks later. The whirling sound persisted and the vehicle was returned to AutoNation on March 1st. This time AutoNation began with simple repairs and escalated the complexity to remove the sound. This included replacing timing belt, idler pulley, crankshaft pulley, oil pump, and eventually the engine block. The car was returned to over one month later. During this time we spoke several times with AutoNation for updates and was told that they weren't sure what was wrong but would continue to replace parts until it was fixed. Given that this is a 2019 Odyssey, both the ambiguity of the problem and the associated repairs were frustrating along with the fact that we'd been without our van for over 6 weeks since purchasing the van the middle of Nov 2018. We convinced the dealership to provide a temporary rental vehicle but throughout the process, they insinuated that the noise could be caused by the accident. We encouraged the company who performed the body repair to correspond with the dealership (and vice versa) to discern the cause of the noise. The initial repair company sent pictures to Honda to substantiate their belief that the noise was not associated with the body-damage only accident. During this time we also contacted Honda Corporate and spoke with Kenisha at Honda Customer Service. After leaving unreturned messages for 4 days with Kenisha she finally called me back (she said she was at funeral) after I called Honda corporate asking for a new rep. Kenisha was not empathic and emphatically stated that she saw NO work orders in her system on our van and that all repairs would be charged to our insurance. We called our insurance and they confirmed that Honda had not requested authorization to perform any repairs nor had submitted invoices for the work being done. We then approached the dealership again at which point they assumed responsibility for the noise and repairs and said work orders wouldn't be seen by corporate until the work was completed. We immediately called Kenisha back and shared the information to which she never replied except to leave a vm asking if we'd received our vehicle back. We received our van back over a month after it's second repair visit (6+ weeks total). We've now submitted a claim with the National Center for Dispute Settlement regarding the TX Lemon Law. During this process another "more senior" customer service represetative called us and asked if the original problem was gone. I answered yes but told her that we've begun hearing a clacking sound on cold start ups and would be taking the van in again for repairs. We when saw Honda's report to National Center for Dispute Settlement they stated that the customer said the problem is gone, but made no mention of the new problem arising. Convenient for Honda's rep to leave that info out of their report. My wife and I have 6 kids and have been faithful Honda owners for years. We purchased this new van instead of used to provide us with reliable transportation. Given the number and depth of the repairs completed to date, my wife no longer has faith in our "new" van. It's fundamentally a different van and now has an extensive repair history that taints the overall value. We are extremely frustrated and warn potential buyers. Years ago I feel like Honda would have done "something" in good faith, but all they do today is defend their position and lawyer up. What happened to you Honda?! We miss the old version of your company....

Fireworks/Software problems

I have been a honda fan for a long time. Owned accord, civic, odysseys in the past. This is my 3rd minivan and luckily I leased it. Mine is Elite model. Since we got this, we have not been able to use DVD player. Some module was replaced by the dealer; started working, then broke again. Very often (97% of the time), i would hear fireworks going off in the speakers which can be very annoying and make it hard to drive the van. Only to fix this is muting the whole volume off. Then display monitor randomly would go dead and stays dead until vehicle is restarted. I was told by the dealer that they are seeing lot of similar issues with 2018/2019 models. Vehicle drives good. Have been to the dealer 4 times so far. They are clueless; only thing they can tell me is Honda is aware of these problems and are working to fix it. I would stay away from Honda vehicles until they figure out these issues. Hope this helps. Update: the dealer fixed the problem and I was told it was some loose connection. But they problem came back again. I was told it was a harness problem and there is no fix for 2019 but fixed in 2020 odyssey. I ended up returning 2019 and leasing 2020 - a leap of faith I guess. Lost some $2000 that I had to pay for the new lease. Update: 2020 odyssey is doing ok so far. No issues.

We owned a 2013 Sienna for 5 years and couldn't take it any longer...lots of "little" interior issues with the Sienna, mostly involving the rear tracks coming out of the floor. The Odyssey is much better on the inside...and everywhere else! You get a lot more options for the money with the LE and it drives a million times smoother than the Sienna ever did! Only complaint - less storage up front compared to the Sienna.

Has needed a new transmission and now the software

We are (were) a Honda family. We have a Honda Civic and now a 2019 Honda Odyssey. After four months of owning it, it broke down on the road and needed a new transmission. Now, 8 months later, the software has frozen. The radio/rear camera are frozen and even when the car is off, the screen stays on. It is now in the shop to be fixed but something tells me I am going to have more issues based on the class action lawsuit right now saying that Honda is not fixing these issues. I would NEVER buy a Honda Odyssey again.

Very Noisy A/C fan

I bough my 2019 Odyssey in June 2018 and it has about 7K miles on it. when I turn on the A/C the fan makes loud noise which can be heard inside the cabin as well. I compared with other 2 identical minivans and their noise was less than mine. Then I showed it to Honda dealer and they said its normal. Don't know what to do, but I am not happy with it. It feels like I am driving a truck (noise wise). I am also disappointed with Entertainment options. By combining Rear Entertainment and Navigation, Honda has cut down on the option for buyers to enjoy music the conventional way.

Honda Lost it

I have a 2005 Odyessy. It has been so good I bought another one without even a test drive. Sorry to say I should have looked at a Sienna too. I have had this now for 6 months and I can tell you the irritations I have come across. Probably not just Honda but having an ipad type control over the HVAC controls is crazy. When your driving you need a fan knob and control for where the air is going to come from. In the past you could do this without taking your eyes off the road. Now your looking at a screen and going thru menus. Having shifting paddles on a family minivan is nuts. My wife hits them by accident and then the car stops shifting and she wonders why it is making so much noise!!! The dashboard layout and SMALL fonts is a real annoyance. I don't have 20/20 vision and I can not read the temperature it is so small. The first cold day the tire pressure warning came on and you have to go thru a menu to see if it is almost flat or just a couple of pounds low. I have never been a Chevy fan but I have an Equinox work car and I have to say it has a much better layout. Large fonts for trip odometer and temperature. When a tire goes low it shows you all the tire pressures. A REAL annoyance is the rear tailgate does not go up nearly as far as the old 2005. We keep hitting our heads on it and we are under 6 ft. Who is engineering this stuff? Something everyone is going to have to deal with is the feel of the electronic steering and gas pedal. Now that you are not directly connected linked the feel is different and takes some getting used to. The gas pedal is like stepping on a sponge. You will miss the old days. Most people no longer do their own oil changes but they seem to be trying to engineer you out of doing it yourself. The oil filter on the 2005 was easy to get to even though the oil would run down it when you unscrewed it. Now they have put the filter in such a hard place with an beam directly below it so it is almost impossible to put a wrench on it to remove it. On our Honda when we brought it home there was a clunking noise when we hit filled in potholes or manhole covers. Turns out they have to replace the front shock. They made it sound like we hit a big pothole and damaged it, but it was that way when we bought it. After the front shock was replaced my wife said she heard a clunking in the rear. When I drove it, it sounded like the rear shock was loose. Sure enough they had to replace the rear shock too! How weird is that for a new car. They include a mini center seat so you have 8 seats. That is probably worth $200 and now I have to store it in the garage. Instead of shifter paddles and the extra seat it would have been nice to have included a power rear hatch or a CD player. That would be something we would actually use! These are real annoyances that have come to really annoy us. If Honda really cared they would include a feedback email address where you could provide them with comments on what they are making.

I bought the wrong car 3 times in my 45 years of purchasing cars. A 2017 Toyota Sienna was one of of the 3. I just traded the Toyota for a 2019 Honda Odyssey. The Honda is better than the Toyota in every way. When I purchased the Toyota, the new Honda van just came out. Toyota was dealing on the Sienna. I let the cost drive my decision versus the quality of the vehicle. I have have had no issue with the air conditioning, doors, or lights as reported by others. The transmission in the Toyota is junk. The shifting in very erratic. The Honda transmission is great. Drivability is excellent. I've only had the Honda for 2 weeks, but I'm very happy that I took the hit on the trade and got a much better vehicle.

LX Odyssey NO second row armrests!?

Roxanne, 12/06/2018
2019 Honda Odyssey LX 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 9A)
31 of 36 people found this review helpful

Wondering if other LX owners have noticed that it is odd that the "captain" second row seating doesn't come with arm rests? American Honda has a virtual image on their website of the interior of the car. The Second row seats CLEARLY have arm rests, even though every LX out of sale do not. When I challenged American Honda on this issue they referred me to the disclaimer that basically says they can have incorrect information and not be responsible. I was stonewalled by the Southeast Regional Manager who referred me back to the dealer. THIS IS NOT A DEALER ISSUE IT IS A MANUFACTURER BEING FRAUDULENT IN ITS REPRESENTATION OF IT'S PRODUCT. You are probably thinking why didn't you notice this when you purchased the car? Why is it such a big deal? My husband is recently disabled after cervical spine surgery. Because of his reduced arm function it is very uncomfortable for him to ride in the car without arm rests. He is tall so is unable at this point in time (or maybe ever) to ride in the front seat. I looked at the car at night and yes, didn't think to check if it had armrests. Not sure I should have had to. The dealer we purchased the car from is trying to rectify the situation on their end, which is greatly appreciated, although as I stated previously should not be their burden.

By putting the seat belts on the seats themselves the second row seats no longer fold down completely for removal. Try removing these VERY heavy seats with the seat back folded only about 20%. RIDICULOUSLY cumbersome. Not sure why Honda "redesigned" the Odyssey when it was pretty close to perfect in 2017. We are actually looking to trade our BRAND NEW Odyssey for a 2017-2016. Ugh...

I learned the hard way that Honda is having a major issue with the “RES”, rear entertainment system, of all 2018, 2019 models. There are numerous glitches through out the navigation, Bluetooth, dvd, blue ray and other bells and whistles. Honda is aware of this but does not have a fix for it. If you are lucky to have bought from an honest dealership than they will admit that they sold you the van knowing that it could possibly be back in less than 3 weeks. There are too many issues to list. Do your research or you will be researching yours states lemon law sooner than later.

I have been a Honda owner my entire life! This is my 5th Honda and I will never buy another one again! I has a 2007 Odyssey which we did not trade in. I have had this van for three months and the issues keep mounting. Let my start with my friend has the same exact van - same interior color and the issues I have she doesn't have a single one. Here is the list - The front windshield reflects the dashboard so bad that the view is distorted. I have now taken it to the dealer twice. The first time they of course called and said there is nothing wrong and that is when I told the service guy to go drive it for more then 5 minutes and tell me what he thinks. He did and called me and was literally dumbfounded on how horrible the reflection was and how it made things look wavy. He even commented that he couldn't believe how bad it was and it was dusk out. I told him well forget it if its sunny bc you can barely see out of the window. Well he had me bring it in for the district parts guy and low and behold - he doesn't see anything. Had to open a case with Honda Corp. The ventilation system is horrible, when you drive the left side by the door is absolutely freezing I need to keep something in the van to cover my legs with bc its so cold. I drove yesterday for 40 min and the door was ice cold when you touched it - again they said there is nothing wrong. The sound system is horrible, you have to constantly adjust it bc it doesn't play well if you are in the middle or back row. I have adjusted the volume while the kids are watching a movie at least 100 times bc it is so bad. The leather is so cheap and after 3 months it is all stretched out (I weigh 120 pounds) When I purchased it there was a "puck" mark in the driver side seat and I showed the sales lady and she said oh don't worry it is under warranty. Well or course they said that there is nothing wrong. Even the seats where my kids sit have marks in them. This van is so low causing you to not be able to raise the seat up high enough to see the front of the van. I am 5'10" and it bothers me. My friend is about 5'6" and she said that she cant see very well at all bc like me she had an 07 odyssey (where you could raise the seat higher). The mirror that is there to store your sunglasses and see your kids in the back is useless. It sits way too close to the middle of the van you can not see it properly. I sit all the way back and have to lean to the side and back if I want to look at it. So if you are shorter and need your seat closer you will never be able to see that useless mirror. If I could get rid of this van I would but unfortunately I would take a bath. It pains me every month when I make my $700 payment. One more piece of info - 12 years ago I paid $35,000 for my van which had leather and that was it. This 2019 I paid $36,000 and they threw in a hitch. I even commented at the dealership that something had to give in order for it after 12 years to actually be cheaper (I have navigation and entertainment this time). Honda really cut corners with this van - if this is your first one you would never know the difference, but for those of us who have had an older version you will clearly see the negative differences. I will never buy another honda again. Definitely not the quality of years past.

Lost many features from 2016

Sadly the 2019 Odyssey EX has lost many features that I liked on the 2016 EX. No CD player No compass Radio has lost some sensitivity. Radio is hard to adjust unless your vehicle is not moving. Rear hatch is no longer high enough for a 6 footer to walk under without dipping your head. Ride height appears to be lower. No integrated garage door opener. The right side turn signal video gone, The blind spot alert does not do the same job. The touch screen for apps does not work well for people with fat fingers or long nails. I don't like the trip computer in front of my face, attention should be on tach, speed, gas level, oil pressure and engine temp only. The "Eco" button seems to cause the engine to have problems above 45mph and must be turned off. Works great around town. Paddle shifters on the steering wheel are a joke. Knobs have been replaced by touch screen, see finger comment above. Smaller gas tank. The positives are: The 9speed transmission works very well. The ride is better than the 2016. Very nice to drive. Mileage is excellent, 28mph on the highway with only 500 miles on the engine and low ambient temp. The wind does not push you around on the highway. Comfortable seats. 2nd row seats move out of the way easier, I do wish they would go into the floor. As of 14,000 miles I have no new complaints Just traveled through the slush and snow of western Nebraska and Colorado. The Cruise control is connected to the radar in the right front. I can understand the auto-braking going out with the radar not seeing anything when covered with slush and ice but the cruise control? The we entered the Eisenhower Tunnel and were splashed again and a shutter warning came up on the dash stating reduced power. Very poor thought process on this. I thought the thermostat should control the temp of the engine but aerodynamics based on the radiator, give me a break. Thankfully it corrected itself when the temps warmed but the engine had to be turned off and restarted. That problem should have self corrected when the ice melted in front of the rad. I will say the mpg averaged 26 going up the mountains in Colorado and about 30mpg coming back. I still hate the fact the rear hatch is made for 5'8" people. Latest problem is the rear wheels have no camber adjustment. My left rear is -1.2 just -0.3 more degrees before it is out of acceptable limits.

Have a 2019 ex l with res. Previous van was a Toyota Sienna that provided us years of problem-free driving. The transmission on our odyssey is the major problem. At 1500 rpm, there is a noticeable hum, slight vibration in the steering wheel and the tachometer has a slight oscillation. Took to the dealer and the service manager saw/heard the problems I described during a test ride. Came back and took another van out and it had the same problem.... so he said it was “normal”. Called the Honda customer service and they contacted the dealer. Their final resolution was there isn’t a problem... seriously????????? Spend that kind of money and get a noise, vibration and oscillation. Totally unsat! Anyone else have these issues?

It seems like it shifts funny, but hopefully that's just me getting used to a new car (fingers crossed). The comfort and technology is fantastic! It's so easy to get to the third row to buckle my child in with the easy to slide second row seats. There aren't many vents in the third row, so on hoping that will be ok. Otherwise great car!

Well, we upgraded (mostly anyway) from a 2018 Kia Sorento EX V6. We needed more space and that's basically the #1 reason we went with a minivan. The #1 reason we went the Odyssey is because of the magic slide seats in the 2nd row. We love being able to adjust them front to back and side to side. Overall we are pleased with our decision. But there are a few things that we miss from the Kia that our Odyssey EX-L doesn't have... 1.) Power folding side mirrors. It was so nice to have on the Kia because we park two cars in the garage and the auto folding mirrors made it easier. With the Honda you have to manually fold them in each time. 2.) Rear camera beeps when approaching an object behind you. (The Honda has rear cross traffic alert, but not when you're going approaching something while going straight back. 3.) The volume button on the steering wheel is not placed well in the Honda. The Kia had a much more natural feel. The Honda's volume control is placed further away from the left side of the steering wheel so it required a further stretch with the left thumb. 4.) The Kia has 10 more horsepower, but the engine is smoother. The Honda has nine gears so it shifts a lot and early, especially from first to second gear. 5.) The Kia steering wheel is a little thicker and feels overall better to my wife and I. Obviously none of those five things listed were deal-breakers for us. Having more space was the top priority, which led us to getting the Odyssey.

The minivan is super comfortable. For a family of 5 and I am always with my 3 nieces. My nightmare started when the sliding doors stopped working properly sometimes didn't open or closed. I was going crazy cuz I was afraid to take the kids out of the car or put it in. I have a baby and sometimes I was un able to take her out of the carseat. For several times we took her out of the car thru the window. The dealer didn't believe it but when I started recording video they saw what's going on. It was a hard month back and forth from the dealership. They replace sensors, sliding doors motors, handles and others pieces and the problem never stop. They didn't have another choice and they exchange it for a Pilot after I call a lemon law attorney.

I used to drive the previous years model of Honda Odyssey. The transmission used to be a common concern. The newly bought model, however, impressed me a lot. The most impressive thing is the transmission--so smooth for accelerations that is totally different from the previous years, although I don't know the reliability yet.

Love my Honda but batteries on a new 2019 odyssey elite should not have to get batteries jumped at four months. That is after Honda replaced battery at 3 months when I took it for a software recall. If it proves to be more unreliable and can’t count on a reliable starting car. It will be the quickest turnover in vehicles in my 40 years of driving. Also electronic transmission cannot be put in neutral if cannot start car. Hence tow trucks have to drag it out of a garage if nose in and cannot get it started with a jumper battery. There is a manual switch on front of engine, but designer lacked foresight. Three large plastic pieces have to be removed along battery and battery holder before it can be accessed. Had to adjust habits to make sure all electrical items are off before turning car off, especially cannot leave the headlights in auto position. Still plan to get new vehicle next year and will spend more time checking out other manufacturers, especially want a 360 degree camera on next vehicle.

Own a 2017 Elantra Limited with the technology and ultimate packages. The safety technology is responsive, and will drive the vehicle as long as the road lines are clear. The 2019 Odyssey EX-L has the same technology but compared to the discount brand (Hyundai) it sucks. The lane keep assist system vibrates the steering wheel without helping steer the vehicle back in the lane and the radar cruise control will crash you into vehicles before it effectively slows you down. It's not a horrible vehicle but you expect more from an automotive company who is constantly praised.

This is a big jump in technology for minivans, so be prepared for a futuristic feel. This has an amazing drive and feel. The quality and resale value is also great, as this will last forever. The only things I don't like: can't turn off some technology, adaptive cruise control, slow/delayed sliding doors, no A/C button, and the transmission could be a little smoother. Otherwise, the van is beautiful and drives quietly and smoothly. I plan to take this van over 200k miles.

Poor vehicle deep down when you dissociate yourself from the aggressive 'best van' marketing; not suited for colder climate, plastic paneling separates and causes leaks, FWD only as compared to Toyota Sienna (AWD) so very poor control during winter, slides badly and relatively low ground clearance; snow mode is useless and gives no additional traction; Driver display screen froze once draining the battery needing jump start; persistent problems with 'walk away auto lock'; sluggish pick-up even with sports mode, does not feel sturdy, and have no confidence in the 5 star crash rating; can feel the centrifugal force while turning at more than 35 miles speed; interior trims and panels in the car boot came loose 1 month after purchase; couple of recalls already in couple of months of purchase, 3rd row driver side charger was found to be faulty after purchase; Honda Lane assist does not work most times and it's a marketing gimmick; engine not so quiet; driver windows shudder and jam at times (more in winters); sliding doors had issues until recalled, middle row seat design of Pacifica is more ergonomic (folds like third row seats, rather than the bulky honda design, need to be manually taken out risking scratches to paint); only one smart-phone USB port for the screen so cannot use anything else when the phone is connected. Fuel economy very variable so no real advantage over others Not to mention very poor customer service and everything is managed by dealers, Honda corporation is in no position to help with issues, perhaps don't want to; misleading advertising Update: Remains a poor van, I recently drove a Pacifica and it was indeed better! We now use the Odyssey mostly to haul material, equipment, and groceries Poor performance and particularly bad in winter weather Addendum: July 2020 Remains a poor van and hopefully will get rid of it next year, we continue to transport dogs and domestic supplies in it and it remains parked in the corner, I will not recommend it to anyone Update2021 Multiple recalls since purchasing, display screen-freezes and gives wrong indication of vehicles approaching, I wish I can upload a photo of the frozen screens that drained the battery Once it needed a jump start, horrible Van can’t wait to get rid of this crap! I regret buying this van, my suggestion would be to look for alternatives

There are major transmission issues! It has hard shifting and skip shifting. There is also a delayed in excelleration. Wish someone had told me! From my research it appear that even 2023 have trannie issues as well. They put in the 9 speed trannies which is put in Fiat, Jeep, and Chrysler in the 2018 & 2019 Odyssey. From my research, there is a class action lawsuit against Honda for these issues. I have read the 10 speed trannies are better. Do yourself a favor and skipthe Odyssey.

The biggest gripe that we have concerns the gas mileage. We are the typical elderly drivers (slow and steady, but at the posted speed limit) BUT our gas mileage, that began at 9mpg when we bought it, is still only 14mpg (combined city and highway driving). The EPA certificate was 22mpg (combined). Heck, our old 1999 Dodge pickup truck got better gas mileage than this vehicle. UPDATE AS OF JANUARY 2020: We took the vehicle back to our dealer and they got only 17mpg ON THE HIGHWAY ONLY. They stated we must bring any claim to Honda directly. When I advised Honda of the dealer's evaluation, Honda refused to compensate us for this inherently defective vehicle, or, to take it back and refund our purchase price. We are left with our only option being to file a lawsuit. So sad that Honda won't stand behind it's representations about their products. BUYER BEWARE OF NEW HONDA VEHICLES.

This is my 3rd Honda Odyssey. My last was a 2007 which I could have easily kept for many more years had the rats not chewed through some wiring. Why Honda made certain changes which are NOT an improvement I don’t know. First, the Second row seats are very difficult to remove and do not fold all the way like my old model did. And worst of all when they are removed they leave two sliding platforms! What I had to do to level out the cargo area with the second row seats removed and the third row seats folded down was ridiculous in order to be able to put my two large dog crates inside. Come to also find out that the air vents in the back that used to be in the ceiling are now in the floor and covered up by anything I want to store! The whole reason for having a minivan! Very disappointing. I also hate not having a gear shift. The push buttons make me feel unsafe. The van does drive really nicely and looks great and they retain their value well. Building up the floor to make it level sucked up a ton of space and also makes it tough to see out the rear view mirror. If this car had a gear shift, stow and go seats for flat cargo, ventilation from ceiling, and better storage in the front (not anything like my 2007 had in dash) it would be perfect!

Bought a brand new 2018 Odyssey EX -L around August 2017. The battery is died last night. It’s only two years and three months, but have 44,000 miles on it. Honda dealer ship could not do anything because it’s out of 36,000 miles warranty. The dealer said Honda is very strict on the battery replacement. But I’d better call Honda at 800-999-1009, I might get better chance to resolve this issue. I called Honda, they said the policy is very strict on battery because too much technology gages in the Odyssey, so the battery died much faster. Situation like mine is not unusual, so they can not do anything about it. This is 4th Odyssey I’ve ever owned. all other three are reliable. But not those new Odyssey, they through too much crap Technology into it which cause trouble. You pay a lot more money, got a lot more troubles as well. Very very disappointed.

Serious Electrical Problems 2019 Odyssey

It began with the battery being dead in the morning at least once a week. I was I must have left something on. The 5th time it happened, I had the dealership test the battery to see if it was a bad battery. Nope. Then while driving, the entire dashboard and radio/naviga screen goes black 3 times within a 10 minute. At a stop sign, the road mitigation tells me Im about to hit something. Sometimes the brake light wont go off. Sometimes the Im completely locked out because the fobs wont register. Sometimes it dings incessantly that my seatbelt is off when its on. Did I mention it has 13,000 miles on it? The dealership will not provide me with a loaner while they figure out the issue. An absolute nightmare with a 42,000 pricetag.

Defective Infotainment System as well

Great car mechanically, smooth ride, easy to drive, good on gas most of the time. The infotainment system has been defective since our first week, honda dealer in our area said they know nothing about it, it cuts out while driving, freezes while driving which also knocks out the cars back up camera. The only fix is pulling the fuse for a hard reset of the system - There is NO other solution, honda knows about the flaw and chooses not to fix it. I joined a class action lawsuit just like everyone else, thousands and thousands of flawed vehicles with potential safety issues. I'm sorry honda, I may never purchase one of your cars again.

Transmission issues & Honda negligence

We have owned multiple Honda vehicles over the last 13 years, with no issues... Until now. Our transmission was acting up, and our van is still under the powertrain warranty. We took it to the local dealership where they confirmed we need a new transmission, and were preparing to put it in. Then the tech team (higher up within Honda) told them they needed to try a "fix" first that includes a carbon clean & a software update. After this, they want us to drive the van with a transmission issue (confirmed by the service team) 500 miles to "make sure" its a transmission issue. After researching the issue, we found out that the faulty transmission is common in this specific model, and Honda continues to avoid taking responsibility. Basically, they don't want to pay for a new transmission and would rather have my family put in danger by driving it the 500 miles. Additionally, when the service department was working on the software update, the computer crashed and they could no longer start the van. Now another part needs to be replaced. (All of this is currently happening, by the way.) This sucks, because we really enjoyed the van otherwise. After all this, we may never buy a Honda again.

Just a few changes needed

I love my new 2019 Honda Odyssey. The only two things I don't like. No stow-n-go for the middle seats. I hate the big lump in the middle of the floor (when seats have been removed) and the fact you have to store the seats outside the vehicle when not using them. Chrysler owns the patent that is why and it's disappointing. The second thing ; the open/close button for the side doors & hatch is located on the drivers side close to the window which makes it inconvenient for the passenger to open or unlock the door for the driver. It should be centrally located like it is in the Chrysler Town & Country / Pacifica.

2019 odyssey issues

I read most reviews and didn’t find two of my mentioned so decided to share. First issue is problem with making phone calls using hands free link. When I make call- person on another end can hear me but cannot hear passenger but when someone calls me they can hear me and passenger. Second issue is a paddle shifters. They are too close to the steering wheel and many times when I have to turn it around quickly I always push them by accident on left side shifting down few gears and it is killing transmission. Can’t believe that Honda engineers would make something so dumb because I am Honda man this is my 5th. Honda. Maybe it is time to switch to Toyota

Excellent Vehicle Elite Model

This odyssey is very good! It is stable at 100 MPH. The car accelerated very fast and smooth. I love its technology but hope it won’t give me issues in the future. The noise is still a little loud as I travel at high speed. The Elite model $47,000 but you can buy at $39,500 plus TTL. The hood is not hot eve though we just stop the vehicle. I love the car so far.

Uncool and loving it!

I admit it -- I have traded in my cool card for this minivan and I AM LOVING IT! We are a family of four, with two kids under age four. I was driving a Honda Pilot -- a solid vehicle which seemed to offer lots of room, until it didn't. To have any cargo room whatsoever, the back row had to be flat -- which means really it was a five seater. With two car seats, the second row offered zero access to the third row. Carrying two kids in and out of the SUV was tough, not to mention that I cringed every time I had to wedge myself in between parked cars and hope a door didn't touch the parked car next to mine while wrestling them in and out of those car seats. Enter my about 20% longer and much less hip minivan -- but @ 100% more functional there is wayyyyyyy more to love! Favorite features include: the storage (OMG the storage), the built-in vacuum, the air conditioned seats, the magic slide second-row seats ,and best of it it drives JUST like my SUV -- except quieter. I honestly do not feel the slightly longer chassis at all while driving or parking. If I had a magic wand, I would make all cars minivans -- just in varying sizes and it would definitely make the world a happier place. so, do it! Come to the uncool table in the lunchroom -- all the cool kids are doing it!
