I was looking for a crew cab small truck for around $20k. Unfortunately, these days you don't have many options for $20k. Honda Ridgeline was way over priced, scarce to find a low trim model as most of the left Ridgeline was over $40k, Tacoma was also way over priced and the driving experience was horrible. I was left with a used Frontier which is a great small truck until my local GMC dealer had a couple of left over 2016 over stock Canyons that they knock off $7k. So I got a new $29k Canyon for $22k. For the a low trim, it is nicely equipped like electric seat, back up camera, and OnStar. No complain so far.

Overall pleased with truck even though it was in shop twice in first five weeks. Biggest complaint is the leathet seats are not comfortable driving on long drives. Had a 2016 with cloth seats and did 9100 miles in 3 months, gteat trip. Traded it in for 4x4 drove 2600 miles and had leg circulation problem on several days. These seats are not made for the long drives at all.

The 2016 GMC Cannon crew cab SLE V6 is without doubt, in my experience, the best value in a truck purchase . I have driven and owned many trucks of different makes and class sizes but this model holds it own to them. It is a little Pricey for that size of vehicle but the bottom line is worth it.

It didn't give the option for the 2.8L diesel but that's what I have and I love it. The mpg is great I usually hover close to 30 mpg.

I researched all mid-size trucks for two years before finally deciding to buy the 2016 GMC Canyon SLT. Overall exterior and interior styling, comfort, performance, technology and cost were my main deciding factors. This truck definitely meets my daily needs and I am completely satisfied!

Why I don't want to keep the truck I bought!

I a the owner of a 2016 GMC Canyon pickup truck. It is a quite loaded SLT model and was purchased after the 2015 model I ordered was lost. The warrantees and maintenance payment policies for GM vehicles changed between 2015 and 2016 . I mentioned this to General Motors explaining my displeasure with this . They had indicated that they would honor this with me but phone calls to them got me nowhere. I had to bring the vehicle back to the dealer five times as the key was left in the ignition and would not come out. Communication with General Motors about this was poor as they never answer their phone and finally called me offered an extended warranty but would not give anything in writing. I traded this vehicle for another vehicle (leased for my spouse) point and have replaced this pickup with a Honda Pilot. I no longer own this vehicle and have traded it for a Subaru.

I'm a little over 1,000 miles in on my 2016 SLE w/ All Terrain and am really enjoying the truck. Remote start is awesome, although I am overusing it a bit so it did ding the gas mileage. Overall I'm in the 19s, on highway only trips it gets around 21/22. All Terrain tires probably does not help. I had experience with a Ford Ranger in the 90s and as expected this is light years beyond. In some ways it exceeds the interior of the Mercedes I traded in, although the Mercedes did have some bells and whistles this does not, such as dual zone climate control. While some reviewers do not like the infotainment, I think it works quite well and like it better than the Mercedes, and the voice activation is really easy to use. I did notice on some hilly highway driving it had to downshift to keep up at 65/70 mph, but otherwise have had no problem with power or acceleration. I'm coming from Xenon headlights versus the Halogen that comes standard here and I will probably look into brighter lights at some point. Overall, I love the look, comfort and capability of this truck, very happy with the purchase.

I’ve owned the car for about a week now. Bought used, 34k miles, very well kept. It has everything. Everything except dual climate and a built in garage door opener. Other than that, I wouldn’t change a single thing. It’s a great ride and feels big for a mid sized truck.

Owned this vehicle for 5 years and just traded it for a new Ranger because I couldn't stand driving it any longer. Had it to the dealer several times for the terrible transmission and extremely unresponsive to the accelerator. Was told that was normal and everything was in spec. See comments from those who gave it 1 star - they explain the problem very well. I liked everything else about the vehicle: size, ride, utility, and still felt solid after 5 years. I believe the next year they changed the transmission from this terrible 6 speed to a 9 or 10 speed, so they knew there was a problem. Strongly recommend avoiding the '15 and '16 model years.

GMC 2016 Duramax Canyon

Jim, 09/21/2020
2016 GMC Canyon SLE 4dr Crew Cab SB (2.5L 4cyl 6A)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

It is very sadly that I write this review and please bear with me as writing isn't my strong point but this is the truth about the Duramax and my truck! I had a 2016 GMC Canyon and got it form a dealer with certified warranty.... a dam good thing, as I purchased with 27K and at 48K the motors through a rod! a hole he size of a tennis ball :( So I began the process of warranty and it is fair to say that GM did replace the motor, and I was understanding, as I figured a factory defect in the rod, it gave away, the real problem began afterword's as it seamed to almost weekly to produce a computer error code, so I thought it was fair that I reach out to the GMC Midwest Regional Rep to discuss the computer issues that seamed to correlate with the motor change out and the unpluming of almost every plug in socket underneath the hood! Well, the first really bitter teste came when the GMC "Phone" Rep said, sorry but he reginal manager (and I quote) " Is Not Customer Facing" at that point I realize I'm in for a long ride with this one. after weeks of complaining and getting irritated with the "phone" case manager I finally received a call form an outside reginal manager. We exchanged our views and he was unwilling to consider my request of extending my warranty on the the computer issues to match the new motor. the low point of the conversation came when he expressed that I was lucky to have received an extension on the motor! The long and short of my experience, GM with the revamped Canyon and Colorado had finally put out something that caught my eye and appeared to be on a path of leading in lieu of following I was glad to once again offer up my loyalty to what appeared to be a value in this segment of the market. Ill even give them credit for at least catching my eye but that's not as Paul Harvey would say the "rest of the story" I need reliability in my travels and it was very clear, in my opinion the Canyon with its weak computer system is not ready for prime time and will not go the distance I except and require! its now gone having taken a hit and getting back into a foreign. It is truly sad to post this but if relatability is a requirement I judge you will not find it in this offering from GM.

Snappy, Fuel Efficient, Quiet, Great Ride

I actually Ordered my 16 GMC Canyon, SLT trim, and mega options. Best thing besides the factory sub, bose system and Leather seats has to be the Factory Preformance Exhaust. I’ve gotten over 33 mpg with the 3.6 V6 doing 80 mph! All control functions easy to use, rides like a Lazyboy down interstates! I’m not sure why some have issues with transmission shifting, maybe because I got the preformance exaust was computer set different? Only thing I don’t like is the tires it came with, not a fan of the Wranglers at all! But it will smoke the tires from a stop, and I’ve hit it at lights and see some Cameros, Mustangs etc in rear view in no time, I get an odd look from those drivers as they didn’t think a truck was that fast. When 1st got it I found myself doing like 90 when entering an on ramp to interstate and didn’t realize my speed. One thing is if you want a more definate shift point, just put in tow mode, actually I’ve found I get better milage in town this way. Otherwise just use the manual shift mode and no issues. Myself I haven’t had any transmission issiues, and I have heard that the later production GMC vs Chevy was a different computer shift program. I’ve had nothing but compliments on this truck and I’m very happy with it. As far as some saying no pushbutton start, not an issiue with me, I’d rather have a key vs need to go somewhere and dead battery in a fob. Heck, way better than my 1st truck, a 1962 Chevy, 3 on tree, straight 6, doors were so odd almost every time I’d bang my knee getting in. Best truck I’ve ever owned, and I’m not so sure about the 8 speeds in 2017 to current I’ve heard more bad about those vs the 6 speeds, so guess its in the reviews?

Shifter Issues

ZirMike, 08/23/2021

I would advise against this vehicle. I have owned my 2017 Canyon Denali for three years. It has under 40,000 miles on it. There is an obviously known issue with the shifter not recognizing when the vehicle is in park, making it impossible to remove the key from the ignition. As soon as my truck was out of warranty, I had to purchase a new shifter, but it still locks up intermittently. When that happens I must play with the shifter until it decides to recognize it is in park. Took it back to the dealer, and of course it worked fine when they tried it. There are too many complaints on line for this to be an isolated occurrence. No doubt there needs to be a recall, but GMC is silent on the problem. Perhaps they just don’t have a good fix. Or they don’t care. Who knows? I will try Ford for my next truck.

I have been wanting to write a review on my 2016 Canyon for a awhile And after driving 50,000 miles, I believe I have a good feel for it now. I bought My Canyon in 2016 off the lot, three states over (Yes it was the best deal ever) also they, by far the had the biggest selection of Canyon diesel (125+) in stock It was nice to have a big selection to pick from instead of the 1 or 2 at the local dealers. I have had a diesel trucks for 20 years. A Ford and Chevy and now the GMC. The 2000 F 250 Ford NorthStar diesel. I was the most un-happies with. A true fix or repair daily vehicle. Once among other problems, an oil line to the turbo came off and all the oil drain out. It did damage to about $3500 of lubricated parts. It was still under warranty. Thank God Keep it till just about 100,000 miles. My next Diesel was a 2004 Heavy Duty Chevy 2500 Duramax Diesel. I drove it for 250,000 and it treated me well. It was getting time for a new vehicle because I was getting close to retirement. Looking for something that made better fuel mileage for city driving and highway driving. I saw that all of the big 3 had plans to start producing of a mid-size trucks. Chevy/GMC and Toyota were the only ones making a mid-size truck at that time. I look at both and like the GMC best. It has a style and look all it own. Now for the bonus, it comes in a diesel model too Because of that I started my research 2.8 L, 181hp and 369 lb-ft 22city – 31highway I will say I don’t think I have never made less than 24mpg in city and more accurate it is more like 25-27mpg and the best I have made is 35 highway. But the more true mileage is 31-32mpg highway at 65 to 70mph and from time to time I will calculate fuel mileage just to see how accurate the computer is. This is the best riding truck I have driven, best looking truck, best mileage truck, and for someone who is retiring or has retired, this the perfect truck. I have the All Terrain 4x4 with 7700 lbs. toeing, it is perfect. I retired this year and am so glad I bought the GMC Diesel Canyon I can not see me myself driving a Ford Ranger or the Jeep Gladiator or the Toyota Tacoma and at this time no one has a diesel yet. The 2016 GMC Duramax Canyon has earned every single of the 5 stars

Okay gas mileage, built sturdy like a truck should be. 4 cylinder engine developed an engine tick at roughly 95,000 miles. This happened after service with oil changes done on very conservative side ( 4 to 5 thousand miles between changes always Mobil one full synthetic ). Not what you would expect.

I purchased this vehicle new, and loved it for the first 7 years...then sh!t hit the fan. When I purchased the truck I purchased the 7yr/100,000 mile warranty, since this was the first year of the diesel and wanted some protection from catasrophic failures. At approximately 92k miles (7 days after the warranty ended) the diesel High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) failed, all internal seals were disintegrated (technician's verbage). This is apparently a common problem (but no recall was ever issued), which can lead to premature engine failure due to sending foreign material into the engine. This pump was replaced, however the new pump failed, after 2 days, and required replacement again, May 2023. The total cost for this was $6200, absolutely no help from GMC, even though the technician admitted that the pump had to have been "failing" for quite a while before it got this bad. At 100,450 miles (would have been about 1 week out of the 100k warranty, if not for the time constraint) my engine blew up while driving, 01 Feb 2024. There is a very good chance that when the HPFP pump had failed, 10 months earlier, it in fact send foreign material into the engines cylinders which might have led up to this catastrophic failure. Fortunately, I was on a rural street travelling at about 20 miles an hour, and not on the highway travelling at 70 miles an hour, like I was 10 minutes before this happened. When the engine blew it sent pieces of cast iron flying out the bottom of the truck, on a highway this could have seriously damaged vehicles travelling behind me. When it blew I also lost all 'propulsion', the truck immediately began coasting to a stop, had this happened at high speeds it would have been extremely dangerous because without the engine running the brakes lose pressure, plus the oil leaking out could have caused a loss of traction. From what I have found, while researching online, these 2.8l diesel engines have a fairly high failure rate (often being referred to as "a bomb just waiting to explode"), especially the HPFP, which might be part of the reason the General Motors discontinued using this engine in 2022. I feel that a recall should be done on all current 2.8l Duramax engines to do a complete inspection and replace all suspect components, as well as to reimburse those of us who were placed in harms way when our engines blew up on the road, due to GM's neglect. DO NOT RECOMMEND GENERAL MOTOR PRODUCTS FOR ANYONE I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER GM VEHICLE

Couldn’t be happier so far. Not only does it look good but it’s a joy to drive as well. The displays and controls are easy to find/use, it will cool or heat your backside depending on your preference, and this baby gets high 20s, low 30s highway driving. I’m having some paint touches up on the bumper and have been given a 2022 Nissan Frontier as a loaner- this thing is a pos in comparison.
