Used 1999 Ford Explorer SUV Consumer Reviews
1999 Ford Explorer
I typically buy foreign cars, but decided to try an American made car. Started with a 1996 GMC Jimmy. This was a piece of crap and I dumped it after the warranty ran out. So I decided to try one more American made car. I checked out the Explorer. It looked really nice. The inside was designed nicely. I have had this car for 4 years now and it has been wonderful. I plan on keeping it for at least another 4 years.
Good Solid American SUV
My 1999 Explorer 4WD XLT has been a good all-purpose family vehicle for mostly around-town driving, vacations and 3 cross country trips in summer and winter. The 4WD was useful for those Illinois snowstorms as well as crossing the Sierra Nevada Mts, the Ozarks gravel roads and various other places. The normal 2WD offered a fair gas mileage of about 17mpg in the city (I drive conservatively) and about 20 on the highway. Notable Interior features I likes were the dual power outlets, 6 CD changer, overhead temperature readout (outside) and compass direction (useful more than I would like to admit). The split rear fold down seats were functionally useful. Normal maintenance required only.

JUNK
FOR MOST OF MY LIFE I HAVE DRIVEN TOYOTAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND WHY I LET MY SON TALK ME INTO THIS PIECE OF JUNK IS BEYOND ME.THE TRANSMISSION WENT AFTER 5 MONTHS@60,000 MILES. I GUESS THEY DIDN'T MENTION IT WAS A 2400$$ EXTRA
1999 Mistake
Bought new. Transmission started to slip just past 36k after expiration of warranty. Top heavy - almost rolled. Replaced 4 wheel drive shift motor twice - poor design. Replaced idle air control valve at 40k. Poor fuel economy especially with air on. NO POWER / ACCELERATION. No resale value. Pluses. Great in snow! Other than yawing feels quite safe. Plenty of interior room great storage - good visibility.
Ford Explorer XLS
I have owned my Explorer for a year now and I actually like it. It's a 1999 XLS. I like the style of the XLS because it gives you the sporty look of the sport version in a four door. Although it is under powered on the highway with its OHV 4.0 V-6, it does well off road and with towing situations. Overall it is a good dependable truck but would fare better with the OHC engine or the v-8.
