They were very very reliable! They always start up, anywhere. In the driveway, parking lots, etc. We had a 3.0 liter, short version and had way up, around 214,000 miles. It ran, like a top! When we needed to sell it though, it needed a little work, and brakes. But my whole 5-Person, family could ride in it with 2 extra friends, of ours! Without squeezing, and we never was even had a hint of ever breaking down. So these are the best minivan, ever built!! We bought it used. Was my favorite vehicle, we've ever had!

Just as I was gonna give up on Ford

This van is a bear. I can't kill it. I've doubled the milage on it, it taken every bit of abuse I can throw at it. This thing is tough. I bought it from a friend who apparently is clinically unable to change oil in a vehicle and he put 120,000 miles on it with no major repairs, and now I've run it up to 220,000 with no repairs, worries, squeaks, rattles or concerns. I'm in the process of selling it (need a full size) but it breaks my heart to see it go. Ford shoulda never killed this one off. Especailly to relace it with that garbage Windstar.

Which is a family hauler par excellence. Can't find a new one that holds as much. Family transpo chief wouldn't go for one of the newer, "prettier" vans...had to be an Aerostar. Got 196K out of our '89 (did a tranny at 165k, but who cares?)and was still tight when we sold it. It is a Ford--when it does break, it is more expensive to fix then GM products. However, it is much more pleasurable to drive then the Safari/Astro (IMHO). Like alot of other Aerostar owners, I wish I could buy a 2003...
