Used 1991 Dodge Spirit Consumer Reviews
Long Term Owner
I bought this car in 1991 and have driven it for over 12 years. Repairs have been been minor and very few. Maintenance is easy to do myself and the parts are standard and not expensive. This is without a doubt the most reliable car I have ever owned, and has certainly been a good value. I keep thinking that I will trade it in when it dies but it just keeps on running great. I can still do 75 mph on the highway and it still gets 24 mpg driving around town.
Spirit good for 250,000
Purchased the Car at 70,000. Parked it at 250,000 miles. Great car at 27- 30mpg. Temp was a problem on this 4 cyl. Suggest changing to a 3rd party radiator, all heating and cooling problems stopped. Had to replace head gasket and air conditioner due to high temp. Replace the radiator and this car will run forever at 75. Use injector cleaner to improve gas mileage. I would not consider a 6 cyl.

250,000 and still fun !
I bought my 1991 6 cyl ES as a work car and found it to be the best I ever had. I still use it as a fun car after 250,000 miles. Guess what - I went out and bought a beautiful 1992 Spirit as its replacement! Sadly I wrecked it in the rain - but it saved my life - solidly built machine. I'm currently looking for a 94-96 Spirit to replace it. My opinion -if you see one - buy it!
Keeps on Ticking
When I bought this vehicle it had 84k miles on it and now it has almost 170k. It has lasted me through college and is still going and I have never had any major problems. It is starting to show it's age, paint is starting to peel in places, but it's never let me down and actually handles great in the snow. The 2.5 Liter engine is very good quality but I can't speak for the others.
1990 Dodge Spirit ES
I too purchased this car new. Back in 1990 there wasn't much to choose from for that price with a 6 cylinder. It was well taken care of & garaged but had too many problems. The engine was pulled to replace a freeze plug, transmission was weak from day one, ignition tumbler broke (had to be towed) the battery imploded (towed again), head gasket went, high beams failed, radio worked intermittently, heater stop working, finally the main seal and cam seal went at the same time. The body is still perfect and it has the original exhaust system. This car has 121000 miles.
I had a good experience
I got my Dodge Spirit around 2003-04. It had the 2.5L engine which had decent pickup and was fairly good on gas. The seat had good back support and the interior was easy to navigate. The car was easy to drive and was absolutely superior on snow and ice to any comparable car that I have ever driven. I believe this is due to the weight and shape. I never had a problem with the car until I decided to race it super hard one night, allowing the RPMs to be very high for an extended period of time. This blew the cylnder head. If I had not done that, I would probably still be driving it today. I thoroughly enjoyed owning this car. I blew it up with about 130k miles.
Solidly Built and Reliable
I bought this car because my '01 Stratus was totaled over the winter. It had 110,700 miles on it at purchase, and now has 113,000. This car handles freeway speeds of 75-80 mph with no problems, and I use the freeway 3 or more times a week traveling between 20 and 30 mile distances one way. The power seats are comfortable and all the controls are simple and within reach. I'm 6'4 and the leg room is ample enough for comfort. I would recommend the Spirit to anybody needing affordable, reliable transportation.
Good, basic transportation
We bought the car as a demo car, back a long time ago. 10 years later, the car still runs great. Its not perfect, we've had a few things go wrong over the years. But what do you expect for an inexpensive basic car? The number of things to go wrong has been I think below average for a car with 200,000 miles on it.
Fastest K-car from the factory!
I bought this car a few months for fun, and as a work car. I'm amazed at how much power Dodge got out of the 2.2L engine! It surprises everyone who rides in it, and all those left behind! The seats are pretty comfortable, and there is plenty of room. If you get a chance, and can find one (only 1200 built) grap it... it's a great sedan for well under $2000!
Dodge Spirit R/T
This year I used this car for business travel about 125 miles/day about 4 days each week. Car performed very well in all types of weather including snow and ice. I had winter tires on it. It would do 30-31 mpg at 75 mph all day long. Very quick and good handling, never boring to drive. It is possibly the best all around car I have ever owned. I would buy another with no hesitation if I could find a nice one. One shows up on eBay from time to time. I keep watching.
Best value in a used car
Bought used in 1999. Had only 54k miles when purchased. 4 cyl, auto, has performed well and has been driven 50 k in last 3 years. Repairs have been a new battery, brakes and tires. This car is underrated and can be purchased for half to one third the price of a Honda.
My Spirit
This car has performed magnificently for me throughout my ownership of it. Although it was built for economy I found it large enough and comfortable enough for my needs. Although I have kept it serviced regularly it has required almost no repairs. If they still manufactured this model I would buy another one just like it!
Best first car
I have owned the car for a while now and it has been great to me. when you have a light foot, you can get 25 mpg in the city and over 35 mpg on the highway. the 2.5 is a great little motor. only have a 3 speed auto. ac still works and blows 50 degree air into the car. it also has a great ride to it. it irons out a lot of the bumps on the road. i am 6 foot 1 and i can fit any where and be comfortable, even with the front seats as far back as possible and sitting in the back. the big trunk in it is also great to have because i always carry around my tools and i still have a lot of space to fit a kart full of groceries in it at the same time.

car was a salvage. bought at 105K. no problems at all. this car was bought because the plymouth acclaim is great.
a car that gets you there
an all around good car
Solid American Vehicle
The drive and appearance of this vehicle are unremarkable. It may leak oil on your driveway but you will not kill this car. Despite being able to find parts in salvage yards the only known cause of death I can attest to has been by demolition derby. The best part is she won.
VROOM VROOM
I bought this car about 2 months ago. It has rus on the hood and trunk and under the bottoms of the doors. The tachometer likes to stick and the speedometer is off. With 179,000 miles I dont like to take it over 75 mph because it makes strange noises when I go fast. It has strong acceleration for a 4 cylinder automatic though. Overall I like it for my first car.
Great
I purchased my 1989 Spirit "Turbo" with 24 miles on it. The first 110,000 miles the car was "God Sent". Little to no problems at all. I ran her good and kept my maintance up on her. At 110K her transmission went, 115K head gasket went and at 120k second head gasket was needed so I sold her. Everthing still worked in her. I brought her new, loaded and kept her for 8 years. I was sorry to see her go.
Underrated
This is the best all around used car for the money. I'm getting great mileage and it has a surprisingly comfortable ride. Also found parts are cheap and easy to find
dodge spirit - underrated
this car isn't beautiful, but does everything well and the five-speed works just fine. A dream to drive on the highway. And a helluva bargain.
Very Nice
This was my first car that I bought a little less than a year ago and I have not had any problems at all. When I bought it, it only had 55,000 miles. The A/C is awesome and the only maintainence I have needed has been a normal oil change.
Owner for 13 years.
I am selling my car after 13 years only because my daughter sold me a newer one. I have had wonderful luck with this car. There was only one unexpected repair and normal maintenance in those 13 years.
Bought it new
I bought this car new in 1990 and have always loved it. Minor rust on doors. Original engine and transmission. I've always tried to keep the car maintained and it has always done the job. The only disappointment was the radio, which had to be replaced after 5 years.
dodge spirit
I reslly liked the car. It was slow but it has a very nice ride.
My favorite car
This is a very reliable car. It feels as though it knows exactly what I want. This car has gone over 300 miles a week at times with no problems. Handles very well in snow condition
